  • Ubuntu 12.04 does not power off

    I'm not able to power off Ubuntu, which was working fine a couple of days ago. When I click shut down, a blank screen appears and stays like that forever. It does not power off by itself and I'm forced to physically power off using the power button. I've even tried 'sudo shutdown now' and 'sudo shutdown -h now' and both don't seem to work! Please suggest some fix for this problem. Thanx in advance. Edit: Restart works fine. Also 'sudo poweroff' doesn't work!

  • Disable error_log. Error_log flooding

    Hello, i got an webserver running and old version of gambio (xt:commerce fork). The error_log in the dir over the public_html is flooding with errors. About 30mb in 15min. How can I disable this log? I can't fix all the errors.     Fn + F6 - backlight turns off immediately, image stays (visible if shine something at the display) xset dpms force {off,suspend,standby} - backlight turns off slowly, image cleared. How to programmatically just turn off backlight on Acer Extensa 5220 laptop in Linux? It should work fast and should not touch image (unlike xset method). Ideally if I could rapidly switching backlight off and on emulate lower_than_minimum brightness level (ideally - to be hardly visible (but visible) at night).

  • Antec Fusion Black LCD won't turn off on system shutdown

    Hi! I've been struggling a while with getting the iMON LCD/IR-receiver on my Antec Fusion Black case to shutdown together with the system (XBMC Live 10 - ubuntu based). But it won't. When it's turned off the LCD still lights up the whole room. Many have proposed the "solution" of setting the machine into hibernation instead but that however won't work for me, since I'm unable to suspend my system. It is the LCD/IR-module that prevents me from suspending and I haven't found a solution to properly unload it on suspending (it's way above my linux knowledge). I need help with getting the display to turn off the backlight when the system is turned off. Can anyone please help me? If anyone also has the knowledge on how to get the eject function to work on my Antec Veris rm200 remote I would be very grateful, I was told about that it could get fixed with irexec but I do not know how since I haven't been able to find a good tutorial on the subject.   • Disqus ads are disqusting and here is how you turn them off

    After couple of months I spent sometime yesterday reviewing my blog and coziie.com to see if everything is fine. Disqus, the best commenting system and an unusual suspect was looking weird. Commenting sections of my sites are displayed links of third party sites which I was not aware of. The content is annoying to me and I believe my site users are also annoyed. I don’t remember configuring something in disqus to display ads or earn money by promoting other’s content. Why on earth I would like to shows content of someone else’s website right inside comments section and annoy readers? Here is a screen grab of comment section that shows ads.   It turns to be disqus automatically enabled a feature called as “Discovery” to all publishers who upgraded the commenting system to the latest release. I remember upgrading commenting system to the latest release couple of months ago but I don’t remember specifically allowing disqus to spam my comment section!! I’m extremely unhappy with the way disqus automatically enabled spamming comment sections in the name of so called new features that benefits bloggers. How to turn of Discovery or Ads in Disqus I turned them off as soon as I noticed them and it’s very easy to do that. Here are the steps to be followed to turn off ads in comments Login in to disqus Switch to Settings tab Click on Discovery tab Choose the option Just comments Save the settings.  Though it’s easy to turn off the ads, it would have been nice if disqus did not enable them by default. Hey guys at disqus, you lost my trust and from now onwards I’ll double check before opting in to any new features.

  • Google Analytics Visitors drop-off for certain region of site only

    I have an issue with the tracking on my site where I have seen a dramatic drop off of visitors to the site from a certain region. I have four regions on my site at the moment, these are UK, EU, US and RoW (Rest of the World). The UK, EU and US regions are unaffected, only the RoW region suffers this drop-off. I have included a screen shot below from my GA account, which shows this effect. My GA code, which is included on every page on the site is below. I have changed the UA account number intentionally for this example. There have been no changes made to the GA account or the tracking code in a live environment for some considerable time, but for some reason I am seeing the drop-off for this region only.   • How to switch off? [closed]

    While I've programmed software for many years, I've only recently started doing so professionally and have noticed a bit of a problematic pattern. I hope this is the best place to pose such a question, as I am interested in others' experiences and solutions... Writing software is, by its nature, a cerebral exercise. When coding for my own sake, I would do so until I was satisfied; even if that meant going all night. Now I'm coding in exchange for goods and services, on projects that are inherently uninteresting to me, I want to 'switch off' when it's time to go home. Maybe you consider that to be a 'bad attitude', but I just don't feel that whatever I'm working on is worth caring about after-hours. Besides, my employer doesn't exactly have the infrastructure required to make out-of-office changes; I can't just clone a repo and even remote login is a PITA. Anyway, the problem I'm experiencing is that, while I'm not particularly overworked or stressed, if I'm faced with a problem, my brain will work on a solution. Generally, it won't give up. Hence I can't switch off and, sometimes, the problem or the solution is significant enough that it disrupts my sleep. While, paradoxically, this doesn't seem to affect my coding ability, it can have a profound impact of the rest of my life. I get increasingly low as I get tired. So far, the best solutions I've found are writing little notes on the matter (and, say, e-mailing them back to my work address) and exercise. Neither of these can switch me off entirely and, as the week progresses, exercise especially becomes untenable due to tiredness. TL;DR How can you stop from being a coding zombie?

  • Can't turn off display - 13.10 / iMac

    I can find no way to completely turn off the display on a late 2013 iMac running 13.10 (Saucy). In the power management settings, I configured the display to "turn off" after one minute to see what would happen. The dimness goes all the way down and everything disappears, BUT the LED backlight remains on. When I try the "xset dpms force off" command, absolutely nothing happens--the command is accepted (no error or warning), but nothing changes. I then wiped everything clean and installed 13.04 (Raring). Both methods (dpms and waiting for sleep) work perfectly there, so something has changed in this new version. The problem can be replicated simply by booting from a bootable USB stick. So, I also gave version 14.04 (Trusty) a try in this manner and it has the exact same issues as 13.10. P.S. I would gladly use 13.04, but the catch there is that I can not get the network card to function. I have spent a week now reading everything i can find on both of these matters with no luck at all. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Also, i am trying to improve my dictionary as i go along. Initially, i have a bunch of words that map to a topics (hard-coded). Depending on the occurrence of the words other than the ones that are already mapped. And depending on the occurrences of these words i want to add them to the mappings, hence improving and learning about new words that map to topic. And also changing the probabilities of words. How should i go about doing this ? Is my approach the right one ? Which programming language would be best suited for the implementation ?

  • The best Bar on the globe is ... in Seoul/Korea

    As you know already sometimes I write about things which really don't have to do anything with a database upgrade. So if you are looking for tips and tricks and articles about that topic please stop reading now Actually I'm not a lets-go-to-a-bar person. I enjoy good food and a fine dessert wine afterwards. But last week in Seoul/Korea Ryan, our local host, did ask us after a wonderful dinner at a Korean Barbecue place if we'd like to visit a bar. I was really tired as I flew into Seoul overnight from Sunday to Monday arriving Monday early morning, getting shower, breakfast - and then a full day of very good and productive customer meetings. But one thing Ryan mentioned catched my immediate attention: The owner of the bar collects records and has a huge tube amp stereo system - and you can ask him to play your favorite songs. The bar is called "Peter, Paul and Mary" - honestly not my favorite style of music. And I even coulnd't find a webpage or an address - only that little piece of information on Facebook. But after stepping down the stairs to the cellar my eyes almost poped out of my head. This is the audio system: Enourmus huge corner horn loudspeakers from Western Electric. Pretty old I'd suppose but delivering an incredible present dynamics into the room. And plenty of tube equipment from Jadis, NSA Labs and Shindo Laboratories Western Electric 300B Limited amps from Tokyo. And the owner (I was so amazed I had simply forgotten to ask for his name) collects records since 40 years. And we had many wishes that night. Actually when we did enter Peter, Paul and Mary he played an old Helloween song. That must have been destiny. A German entering a bar in Korea and the owner is playing an old song by one of Germany's best heavy metal bands ever. And it went on with the Doors, Rainbow's Stargazer, Scorpions, later Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers, a bit of Santana, Carly Simon, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie ...Ronnie James Dio's Holy Diver, Gary Moore, Peter Gabriel's San Jacinto ... and many many more great songs ... Of course we were the last guests leaving the place at 2am in the morning - and I've never ever had a better night in a bar before ... I could have stayed days listening to so many records  ...   • Setting up OpenGL camera with off-center perspective

    Hi, I'm using OpenGL ES (in iOS) and am struggling with setting up a viewport with an off-center distance point. Consider a game where you have a character in the left hand side of the screen, and some controls alpha'd over the left-hand side. The "main" part of the screen is on the right, but you still want to show whats in the view on the left. However when the character moves "forward" you want the character to appear to be going "straight", or "up" on the device, and not heading on an angle to the point that is geographically at the mid-x position in the screen. I've tried a variety of things to make it appear as though "the dude" is off to the right: - do a translate after the frustrum to the x direction - do a rotation after the frustrum about the up/y-axis - move the camera with a biased lean to the left of the dude Nothing i do seems to produce good results, the dude will either look like he's stuck on an angle, or the whole scene will appear tilted. I'm no OpenGL expert, so i'm hoping someone can suggest some ideas or tricks on how to "off-center" these model views in OpenGL. Thanks!

  • MP3 files cut off in the Ubuntu One Android app

    I noticed today on my phone (Droid X running Android 2.2.1) that when streaming the Ubuntu One app would skip to the next song before the previous one had finished. Looking into it, one of the mp3s downloaded from the server was only 2.5MB instead of 4.2MB as it shows on the server itself via one.ubuntu.com. It's happened with multiple tracks today (I remember it happening once the first time I used the app too but shrugged it off as a glitch). The app itself shows a star on the playlist item indicating the file was downloaded even though it was apparently cut off for some reason, perhaps lack of good cell coverage, or some sort of dropped connection. It seems like the latter may be happening and instead of showing an error or retrying it just stops and shows the download is complete.
