  • What is optimal hardware configuration for heavy load LAMP application

    I need to run Linux-Apache-PHP-MySQL application (Moodle e-learning platform) for a large number of concurrent users - I am aiming 5000 users. By concurrent I mean that 5000 people should be able to work with the application at the same time. "Work" means not only do database reads but writes as well. The application is not very typical, since it is doing a lot of inserts/updates on the database, so caching techniques are not helping to much. We are using InnoDB storage engine. In addition application is not written with performance in mind. For instance one Apache thread usually occupies about 30-50 MB of RAM. I would be greatful for information what hardware is needed to build scalable configuration that is able to handle this kind of load. We are using right now two HP DLG 380 with two 4 core processors which are able to handle much lower load (typically 300-500 concurrent users). Is it reasonable to invest in this kind of boxes and build cluster using them or is it better to go with some more high-end hardware? I am particularly curious how many and how powerful servers are needed (number of processors/cores, size of RAM) what network equipment should be used (what kind of switches, network cards) any other hardware, like particular disc storage solutions, etc, that are needed Another thing is how to put together everything, that is what is the most optimal architecture. Clustering with MySQL is rather hard (people are complaining about MySQL Cluster, even here on Stackoverflow).

  • I need to remove Java Script tags using regular expressions and JRegex

    I need to remove all the Java Script tags and the content in between and style tags from the HTML code of web pages.So far I've come up with this expression : "(<[ \r\n\t]script([ \r\n\t]|){1,}([ \r\n\t]|.)?)|(<[ \r\n\t]noscript([ \r\n\t]|){1,}([ \r\n\t]|.)?)|(<[ \r\n\t]style([ \r\n\t]|){1,}([ \r\n\t]|.)?)" I use JRegex library to work with regular expressions.   • Disabling Firefox spell checking in iframe-based text editors

    There is a lot of info around about how to disable spell checking in html textarea element by using spellcheck='false'. However to have text area with more advanced capabilities, one must use iframe with designMode = "on" (see e.g. this page, this is a way that RichTextArea is implemented in GWT) and I couldn't find a single post on that topic. It turns out that Firefox detects such advanced text areas and enables its spell checking in them. You can see it live by visiting this page from Firefox and entering some content to text field. If you inspect this code, you'll see no textarea tag, yet FF spell checking is still active. The only way I managed to disable it was setting designMode to off but... I need it to be on. The question is: Is there any possibility to disable spell checking in such cases, without setting designMode = "off"?

  • What is the performance penalty of XML data type in SQL Server when compared to NVARCHAR(MAX)?

    I have a DB that is going to keep log entries. One of the columns in the log table contains serialized (to XML) objects and a guy on my team proposed to go with XML data type rather than NVARCHAR(MAX). This table will have logs kept "forever" (archiving some very old entries may be considered in the future). I'm a little worried about the CPU overhead, but I'm even more worried that DB can grow faster (FoxyBOA from the referenced question got 70% bigger DB when using XML). I have read this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/514827/microsoft-sql-server-2005-2008-xml-vs-text-varchar-data-type and it gave me some ideas but I am particulairly interrested in clarification on whether the DB size increases or decreases. Can you please share your insight/experiences in that matter. BTW. I don't currently have any need to depend on XML features within SQL Server (there's nearly zero advantage to me in the specific case). Ocasionally log entries will be extracted, but I prefer to handle the XML using .NET (either by writing a small client or using a function defined in a .NET assembly).

  • How to parse JSON to receive a Date object in JavaScript?

    I have a following piece of JSON: \/Date(1293034567877)\/ which is a result of this .NET code: var obj = DateTime.Now; var serializer = new System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer(); serializer.Serialize(obj).Dump(); Now the problem I am facing is how to create a Date object from this in JavaScript. All I could find was incredible regex solution (many containing bugs). It is hard to believe there is no elegant solution as this is all in JavaScrip, I mean JavaScript code trying to read JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) which is supposed to be a JavaScript code and at this moment it turns out it's not cause JavaScript cannot do a good job here. I've also seen some eval solutions which I could not make to work (besides being pointed out as security threat). Is there really no way to do it in an elegant way?     As in stl containers, why can't we access a typedef inside the class from the class instance? Is there a particular insight into this?     Is it possible to configure Hibernate reverse engineering and code generation tool in such a way that one-to-many relation between tables is mapped to entities inheritance instead of enrites relation? I have Person table and Employee table, which are related with the foreign key (Person contains basic information, Employee the rest). In my Java code I would like this relation mapped to inheritance Employee extends Person. This can be done by hand, but maybe I missed some custom configuration parameter that I can use. I couldn't find any official documentation - docs link on RedHat Hibernate page (http://www.hibernate.org/5.html#A10) is broken...

  • How to install Qt on Windows after building?

    I can't find any information on how to install Qt built on Windows. In wiki article How to set up shadow builds on Mac and Linux there's description of -prefix option in configure script but this option is not available on Windows. I know I can use Qt right from the build folder but it does not seem the right thing not to perform an install step. One problem with this approach is size; Qt's build folder takes about 4GB space whereas after installing using binary installer Qt takes about 1GB space. I guess the difference is due to temporary files created during building. I hope some install procedure would install (copy) only needed files leaving temporary files in the build folder.

  • ShowDialog and Hide form, when from is called from other object in VS2010

    Hallo, I have a modal Form, used for searching information in DB. This Form is used by a COM object, that waits for search result. Initialization of the form take a lot of time (because of building connection to DB). So, I initialize the Form (without showing it), and keep Form-object alive, as long as COM-object work. In this way I keep the state of the Form: public void Search() this.ShowDialog(); string result = this.ResultOfSearch; this.Hide() return result; And it doesn't work anymore on VS2010 (compiled for Framework 2.0). I search for alternative way to make a modal form (or a method to protect a form against Destroy() at the end of ShowDialog). Any ideas?

  • Is there any good reason for private methods existence in C# (and OOP in general)?

    I don't mean to troll but I really don't get it. Why would language designers allow private methods instead of some naming convention (see __ in Python) ? I searched for the answer and usual arguments are: a) To make the implementation cleaner/avoid long vertical list of methods in IDE autocompletion b) To announce to the world which methods are public interface and which may change and are just for implementation purpose c) Readability Ok so now, all of those could be achieved by naming all private methods with __ prefix or by "private" keyword which doesn't have any implications other than be information for IDE (don't put those in autocompletion) and other programers (don't use it unless you really must). Hell, one could even require unsafe-like keyword to access private methods to really discourage this. I am asking this because I work with some c# code and I keep changing private methods to public for test purposes as many in-between private methods (like string generators for xml serialization) are very useful for debugging purposes (like writing some part of string to log file etc.). So my question is: Is there anything which is achieved by access restriction but couldn't be achieved by naming conventions without restricting the access ?

  • AD password not synchronising properly

    I have 600+ users in AD, but only one causes me trouble. The problem is I can reset his password from AD, he can then log in to his machine. After that he would like to change his password from Windows 7, and proceeds without errors. Logs out or locks the workstation but cannot access it again using either old or new password. So I have to reset it again and he can only use the one I provide for him. All our machines are in the same physical location in the same subnet. Functional level is 2003. I'm totally out of ideas. I could create him new user account, but I'd possibly like to know what causes this. I can only suspect some sort of synchronisation problems but other accounts work fine, and I don't know how to dig deeper into this. Thanks, Piotr

  • Delegate performance of Roslyn Sept 2012 CTP is impressive

    I wanted to dynamically compile some delegates using Roslyn. I came across this article by Piotr Sowa. The article shows that the delegate compiled with Roslyn CTP was not very fast. Since the article was written using the Roslyn June 2012, I decided to give Sept 2012 CTP a try. There are significant changes in Roslyn Sept 2012 CTP in both C# syntax supported as well as API. I found Anoop Madhisidanan’s article that has an example of the new API. With that, I was able to put together a comparison. In my test, the Roslyn compiled delegate is as fast as C# (VS 2012) compiled delegate.     Im using JQuerys Autocomplete plugin, but it doesn't autocomplete upon entering anything. Any ideas why it doesnt work?
