• Ubuntu 9.10 Dowload Speed Very Slow

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and I'm new to the Linux world, so bear with me. I'm on a corporate network of 3 T1s shared across 50-60 users. I typically get about 300 KB/sec for downloads, but for whatever reason, the Linux box will start out in that range, then drop to less than 1KB/Sec sometimes. Doesn't seen to matter where I'm downloading from. Right now I'm trying to get Eclipse for PHP and it's running at 3-6KB/sec. Getting the updates for the system will also drop to very slow rates. Our IT person has set up the machine to get the same 10.0.0.x address when it starts, and moved this IP to bypass our Proxy/Firewall going out, so that shouldn't be the issue. Can anyone recommend something I can try to better diagnose the problem. Again, I'm new to the Linux world and the hardware/OS setup side in general (coming form more of a coding background). • Network based on Netgear FVS318 extremely slow

  A network I maintain uses an FVS318 as a router, with a separate switch. Communication within the network is slow. Out to the internet is even slower. As it stands there is one patch from the FVS to the switch and no other devices directly connected to the FVS because any that are run so slowly they might as well not be connected to the network. Swapping in a bog-standard home router dramatically increases network speed, but that's not a viable solution because some of the enterprise features of the FVS are required. There are quite a few complaints about this on the Netgear forum, but Netgear support have not been forthcoming with any help - so I turn to you all: any ideas?

• Win XP shut down window very slow to appear

  Hi all, I click Start-Shut Down and the Shut Down window takes 5 minutes to appear. This problem doesn't happen after a fresh boot, it only happens after I have been logged on for awhile. I am using a MacBookPro with Bootcamp. The machine actually shuts down quickly, its just really slow to bring up the shut down window. Basically I would like to know if: 1) Anyone has any ideas why this would happen 2) Who owns the "Shut Down" window (i.e. what happens on the OS after I click the Shut Down icon in the start menu) I've tried perusing the task manager to try and see if any processes look suspicious, but to no avail. thanks, H

• Linux PHP web server horribly slow when accessed from any windows browser

  I have a Linux server (Ubuntu 10.04) running apache2 and PHP. Everything runs fine when accessing a page from any browser from another Linux machine or Mac. But when I try to access a page from any combination of Windows machine and browser I get about a 30 second delay before the page comes back. Accessing a plain old HTML file from the Windows browser runs lickity split. So it seems to be just PHP. MySQL is installed but a simple test page that uses no MySQL is still slow. I don't think it is DNS because if I hard code the IP address in the URL nothing changes. There doesn't seem to be anything in the log files that I can tell. What could be causing this behavior on Windows clients?

  It only affects Gmail. I have tested other HTTP, FTP and HTTPS websites and downloading is fine, at the exact same time the problem is affecting a Gmail attachment download. The symptoms include both: High waiting time, before the download starts (on the order of 30 seconds); AND Very slow download transfer speeds (on the order of 1kbps) It's a very strange problem, and I didn't find any recent issues relating to Google Australia. The account works fine at another site with a different ISP, so it's either a computer configuration or ISP - I lean to the latter.

• Slow running Ubuntu 10.10 laptop

  Hello everyone. I have a slow computer. When I click on an icon say Firefox it can take 10 seconds to load. when I minimize and maximize windows you can see it happening. I get "ghost" screens where you see the window outline of the box but nothing in it or it may be white. The laptop is two years old and has these specs: Intel core two duo 2.8GHZ CPU 4GB RAM 500GB HDD 512MB Nvidia 8600GT video Realtek HD audio What is going on and where should I start looking for issues? Ubuntu 10.10 was upgraded from 10.04LTS following the instructions from the Ubuntu Wiki and it was done through the update manager GUI, not the CLI. Thanks for the help.

• Slow network file copy on Windows 7

  I wrote a program that uses xcopy to transfer files (usually between 1KB and 2MB) over our intranet. Usually, I am copying files from my host machine (Windows 7 x64) to a VMWare virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 (the VM is running on my host machine, if that matters). On Windows XP, the file transfers usually only require a few seconds to complete. But on my Windows 7 machine, the transfer of the first file (1.5 MB) takes around 1.5 minutes to complete. This is true whether I use xcopy, robocopy, or programmatically using File.Copy(). I noticed that if I use File.Copy, the first transfer is very slow and subsequent transfers are much faster. Any clue how I can speed up the process? Is there a setting in Windows 7 (or server 2008) that I could try?

• Please wait for User Profile Service... on WIndows 7 takes around 1-2 minutes to process

  When loggging into our domain, after entering account credentials the log in process takes around 1-2 minutes before it gets past the User Profile Service, the rest of the process takes 2-3 secs. This effects all machines running Windows 7 Enteprise 32-bit and is on fairly high spec laptops (SSD drives, i5 2.93Ghz CPU, 4GB memory). Is there any way to speed this up or is this time delay acceptable? Thanks in advance.

• Port forwarding on D-Link DIR-615 super-slow, useless

  Hello I have replaced my old router with DIR-615 from D-Link, and now the port forwarding is so slow it makes the router practically useless for requests coming from outside of my network. Accessing the router itself (admin UI) from outside is without any issues, no delay whatsoever. But when I try to access a service residing on any of the computers in my network from outside the requests take minutes and minutes. (E.g. I can see source of my GWT-app main page, but loading additional CSS and JS files takes years.) If anyone could recommend any further diagnostics I should do to figure out what is happening it would be great. Few notes: happens with more services (web-app on Tomcat, viewing directory index via Apache) it does not make a difference whether the service is hosted on wired or wireless PC accessing the service on a localhost works fine, as does any 'inner' communication turning off firewall on target PC does not make difference either (makes sense) when I replace this router with the old one (both 192.168.1.1) everything works fine I see nothing suspicious in the router's log I believe I have the latest firmware (4.11) DIR-615 sucks, it already died once completely Regards Jarda Z.

• Trobleshooting extremely slow opening times in Win7 for documents on Win2k8 server

  Hello. It's hard even to describe my problem. It seems there's only problem with extreme slow openings (up to 10 minutes) on Windows 7 (on XP things works fine) for files that are stored on Windows Server 2008. And now what I discovered up till now. If I open (some files, not all, not allways) .doc and .xls files with doubleclicking it takes up to 10 minutes to finaly open the file. In that time, file seems to be locked for all other users. If I cancel opening, file remains locked for some time. Owner on that files is the one who last wrote changes in them. If I change the owner to larger group, which I am member of file gets opened super fast. When opened file can be saved normaly and fast. That file reopens fast. One other user reports that there is only problem when opening the files for the first time in a day. When he openes first file he has no problems with other files at all (or so he says). He also states that when accessing files from home via VPN he has no such problems with files. And now: anybody has a clue where to start looking? I suppose that is misconfiguration problem. But where? File system? Permissions? DFS? VMWare network config? My setup is as follows: Physical server: HP Prolian ML350 G6 Virtual host: VMWare ESXi 4 Guest: Windows Server 2008 Standard Files are accessed via DFS shares. Please help me. Thanks. Mazupan

• VPS goes slow at more than 20 users online at the same time

  I have 512 MB VPS (brustable to 1GB) Somehow, the site goes slow when there are about 10 users, and becomes impossible to load at 20 users online at the same time. I wonder what could be the problem for this. The bandwidth connection of the VPS is 1Gbps. • Some apps very slow to load on Windows 7, copy & paste very slow.

  Hello, I searched here and couldn't find a similar issue to mine but apologies if I missed it. I've searched the web and no one else seems to be having the same issue either. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on a pretty high spec. machine (well, apart from the graphics): Asus M4A79T Deluxe AMD Phenom II 965 black edition (quad core, 3.4GHz) 8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR 1333MHz RAM 80GB Intex X25 SSD for OS 500GB mechanical drive for data. ATi Radeon HD 4600 series PCI-e Be Quiet! 850W PSU I think those are all the relevant stats, if you need anything else let me know. I've updated chipset, graphics and various other drivers all to no avail, the problem remains. I have also unplugged and replugged every connection internally and cleaned the RAM edge connectors. The problems: Video LAN (VLC) and CDBurnerXP both take ages to load, I'm talking 30 seconds and 1 minute respectively which is really not right. Copy and paste from Open Office spread sheet into Fire Fox, for example, is really, really slow, I'll have pressed control V 5 or 6 times before it actually happens, if I copy and then wait 5 to 10 seconds or so it'll paste first time so it's definitely some sort of time lag. Command and Conquer - Generals: Zero Hour. When playing it'll run perfectly for about 10 or 20 seconds then it'll just pause for 3 or 4 then run for another 10 or 20 seconds and pause again and so on. I had the Task Manager open on my 2nd monitor whilst playing once and I noticed it was using about 25% of the CPU, pretty stable but when the pause came another task didn't shoot up to 100% like others on the web have been reporting (similar but not the same as my issue, often svchost.exe for them) but dropped to 2 or 3% usage then back up to 25% when it started playing properly again. Very odd! But it gets even odder... I had a BSOD and reboot last week, when it rebooted the problem had completely gone, I could play C&C to my heart's content and both the other apps loaded instantly, copy and paste worked instantly too. I did an AVG update earlier this week which required a reboot, rebooted and the problem's back. I don't think it's AVG related though, I think it was just coincidence that's the app that required a reboot. I think any reboot would have brought the issue back. A number of reboots later and it hasn't gone away again. If any one could make any suggestions as to the likely cause and solution to these issues I'd be most grateful, it's driving me nuts! • jQuery show "loading" during slow operation

  I'm trying to show a small loading image during a slow operation with jQuery and can't get it right. It's a BIG table with thousands of rows. When I check the "mostrarArticulosDeReferencia" checkbox it removes the "hidden" class from these rows. This operation takes a couple of seconds and I want to give some feedback. • IIS on localhost is very slow

  I am using IIS7 on Windows Vista dual core cpu. The first time hit on a WCF service or an ASP.NET webform sometimes takes way longer than a minute which is not really acceptable for me. I configured the application to use the Classic .NET application pool and tried playing with the Maximum worker processes, first setting it to 4 but put it back to 1 as it did not have the expected result. Are there any other things that I can try?

• Slow Browsing/Direct Download, but Fast Bittorrent Download

  I'm using Windows XP SP2. I have a 1 MB connection via a SpeedTouch 585, and my internet speed registers at 0.3 MB, with a maximum download of 30kbps. Not to mention a terrible ping at 500-1500. On the other hand, I get full speed in uTorrent - a bittorrent program - reaching up to 100 kbps; the way it should be. I haven't made any changes to anything. And it has been functioning well until the last month. I waited in hope that it could be an ISP issue and that it would be resolved, but their support crew did not help me with this problem either. I've tried disabling all firewalls, and all wireless connections, using different browsers, and disabling QoS. But it did not work. Me thinks it's an ISP issue, but if so, how am I getting full speed in uTorrent? Could somebody help me out with this? Thanks.

However once the home page has loaded all pages from then on run fine. If you close and then reopen Internet Explorer the same thing happens. Any suggestions?

• DI-524UP will become deadly slow when downloading torrents

  I have a DI-524UP router that shares internet to two notebooks at home via wireless and a desktop via wired collection. It will become barely available/pingable via wireless when I download torrents on a desktop computer. Even when I limit download speed to 20% or less of available bandwidth - it must be something else, not the speed that causes the issue. I've tried limiting number of active connections and stuff but it will still not cure. Is there anything I can do about this?

• Firefox "auto-complete" is very slow

  Firefox version: 3.6 My places.sqlite is rather big (114MB, after being optimized by SpeedyFox.) If I turn on auto-complete, it may take 1 or 2 seconds for Firefox to accept a newly typed URL. To reproduce the issue: Type a URL into the URL bar, press enter. Nothing happens, and Firefox consumes 100% CPU (actually 50% of 2 cores) for 1 to 2 seconds Then Firefox start the network connection and load the webpage. Since it consumes 100% CPU, I don't think the bottleneck is the disk. I have some experience with SQLite and I know a 100MB DB is very small. To achieve the delay Firefox must be doing some expensive processing or inefficient queries. The issue does not appear if: auto-complete is turned off, or the URL is frequently used, or a new profile with no history is used Does anyone have any idea how to solve the problem? Should I file this as a bug? I don't want to give up my 100MB history, but I don't want to give up auto-complete either :)

• GIMP Slow Startup

  Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at ProcessExplorer (or Task Manager, whatever), I see that it's not taking any CPU. EDIT: it does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, then starts working again, and the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help. EDIT: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? (NOTE: Just wanted to point out that the title and the tags are the same. :D )

• ssh connection slow when using @hostname.com but now when using @ipaddress

  When connecting to a Debian server using ssh, if I use [email protected] (the IP address of hte server) the connection is instant. If however I use [email protected] (a DNS redirected to the IP address of the server) the ssh connection hangs for a 20 seconds before connecting successfully. The ssh logs show the following: [alex@alex home]$ ssh -v -v [email protected] OpenSSH_5.5p1, OpenSSL 1.0.0c-fips 2 Dec 2010 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: Applying options for * debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 and here it hangs during 20 seconds before continuing. I think it might have something to do with reverse DNS or similar (the server does not really "know" it's name is hostname.com, it just has that DNS rediriected to its IP address). I have added the following options to /etc/ssh/sshd_config: UseDNS no GSSAPIAuthentication no to no effect. The server's DNS records in /etc/resolv.conf are configured correctly: ping hostname.com PING sub.domain.com (X.X.X.X) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from replicant (X.X.X.X): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.029 ms 64 bytes from replicant (X.X.X.X): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.050 ms?s Thanks for the help. Solution: It seems the DSL router my ISP saddled me with was causing the trouble. Changing my DNS server from 192.168.1.1 (router's IP) to google's (8.8.8.8, always good to know when you are in a hurry) instantly solved the connection delay problem. I am guessing that the 50€ router provided does not cache DNS entries, although I don't understand why pinging the DNS address had no delay, and 20 seconds is too long of a wait, even for uncached DNS. • Visual Studio 2008 Debugger really slow with SSD

  Hey guys, my setup is a laptop with Win 7 64bit, VS2008 SP1 on an intel x25-m 4gb RAM with page file turned off (no need) and 2.2 core duo What happens is weird: When i build my project and attach the debugger the symbols load REALLY slowly... like 1 every 5 secs Sometimes the symbols will fail to load at all. This is driving me crazy as this was a freshly installed win 7 box with default VS installation, working on ASP.net web applications... i've never had to use symbol servers or any of that jazz so i'm quite frustrated. With this SSD it should breath fire as it does with loading and doing everything else. Am i missing something?
