  • Podcast Show Notes: Evolving Enterprise Architecture

    The latest series of ArchBeat podcast programs grew out of another virtual meet-up, held on March 11. As with previous meet-ups, I sent out a general invitation to the roster of previous ArchBeat panelists to join me on Skype to talk about whatever topic comes up. For this event, Oracle ACE Directors Mike van Alst and Jordan Braunstein  showed up, along with Oracle product manager Jeff Davies.  The result was an impressive and wide-ranging discussion on the evolution of Enterprise Architecture, the role of technology in EA, the impact of social computing, and challenge of having three generations of IT people at work in the enterprise – each with different perspectives on technology. Mike, Jordan, and Jeff talked for more than an hour, and the conversation was so good that slicing and dicing it to meet the time constraints for these podcasts has been a challenge.   • Firewalling gateways and IDS's

    Hi, For IDS, I plan to have a Win 2008 server running on the gateway with the majority of roles disabled. I plan to firewall the Internet connection, but I'd also like to install Snort to work as an IDS. However, I am guessing that regardless of the Snort install of the promiscuous Winpcap driver, I won't be able to monitor ports that the firewall blocks. My thinking is that chain of flow is: Internet-Firewall on Win 2008-Winpcap-Snort-internal network Is there a way to still monitor services that the firewall will block (i.e. TCP 445 SMB) ? Perhaps run the data through Snort and then through the firewall ? Thanks

  • Connect my mac to my external local asp server

    I have pc server running asp that we use locally for our work that we have several PC's connected to it, and all works ok with this and we can run the sites locally ok. But I would also like to connect our mac to this server so we can also then use Dreamweaver on. I can access the server via the mac and Dreamweaver but when I set up a site(s) via DW using the same settings as we do on a PC and then run locally the site fails. Is there a way I can set up the mac to then be able to run the sites from DW using this local server? iMac IO Lion Dreamweaver Our server is windows 2003 sever.

  • Access my mac's local server from a windows machine

    I am running my test sites on my mac, but I would like be able to use my windows machine to also access this server and be able to write / read fiels form this server. I can access my sites on my windows by using the IP address 192.168.1.???. But I would like to be able to use my windows machine to also access the fiels and edit them. Any ideas much appreciated. Some details: Mac OSX SL file sharing set to on. Windows 7 (tried setting up network map using afp://192.... but nothing) Both machines are connected to a local network, with several other machine (windows) Thanks

  • Ubuntu 13.10 has no Suspend or Hibernate Options

    I have a Lenova Yoga 2 Pro, and I have Ubuntu 13.10 installed. I am having some issues setting the power functions. At the moment I can not suspend or hibernate the laptop. So from Gnome 3.10 I have the option to Log Out, Shutdown & Restart. No option for Suspend / Hibernate. Weirdly however I can use these commands to get the right behaviour sudo pm-suspend sudo pm-hibernate So the laptop knows how to do this, it just is not giving me the option and also when I set "Close screen lid" to suspend, well nothing happens. It feels like there is a "connection" not being made.

  • How to use JQuery UI datepicker with bgIframe on IE 6

    I am trying to use the JQuery UI datepicker (latest stable version 1.5.2) on an IE6 website. But I am having the usual problems with combo boxes (selects) on IE6 where they float above other controls. I have tried adding the bgIframe plugin after declaring the datepicker with no luck. My guess is that the .ui-datepicker-div to which I am attaching the bgIframe doesn't exist until the calendar is shown. I am wondering if I can put the .bgIframe() command directly into the datepicker .js file and if so, where? (the similar control by kelvin Luck uses this approach) Current code $(".DateItem").datepicker({ showOn:"button", ... etc ... }); $(".ui-datepicker-div").bgIframe();

  • How does Entity Framework 4.0 determine which parameters are required for the factory method of an e

    Hi, I am working with Entity Framework 4.0 (VS 2010 Beta 2, NOT RC). I can model the EDM and produce the required database. When I ask VS to generate the code for the model, it generates the expected .designer.cs file. When I look at the factory methods for each entity that the designer has generated, I've noticed that it doesn't include all of the properties of the entity. Is it correct to say that the factory method only includes properties that cannot be null ? This appears to be the case, but I'm not entirely sure. Thanks, Scott

  • How does one calculate CPU utilization programmatically ?

    Hi, I have a benchmarking program that calculates the time (in milliseconds and ticks), for a persistance to Entity Framework 4.0. Is there a way to calculate CPU load ? I am guessing that I would need to query Windows to find out my CPU frequency, how many cores, etc. Does this sound right ? If so, what part of the .NET framework relates to querying the system ? Generics always confuse me, so I wrote some code to exercise the sample.     Hi, I have co-workers working on an Entity Framework model that changes structure (entities), over time as software development progresses. I've written some utilities that interact with the tables within the model, but I'd like to have the code dynamically discover the tables. Is there a way I can do this ?   • Is the first persistance of an Entity Data Model in EF 4.0 slower due to the connection cost ?

    Hi, I've got a console app written that persists an object graph via Entity Framework 4.0. I loop through this to dump the execution times for each persistance. The first persistance is always the largest. Is this due to EF making the initial connection to the database and/or JIT'ing ? Here's a sample of the output: Persisted graph in **3318** millseconds.   • Will a mulitouch touch screen equipped PC allow me to simulate real Android UI's without an Android device ?

    Hi, I have recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab as an Android 2.x testbed (I am aware that 2.3 might not run on it, but it appears to be a good 1.x - 2.x device with a large enough screen to approximate the variety of screens on different phones). I would wait for Honeycomb equipped devices (such as the Motorola XOOM mentioned at CES 2011), but these are slated for some time in Q1 (likely end of Q1 for the Canadian market). If I get a multitouch capable PC and install the Android SDK and simulator, will I be able to use the multitouch functionality of the PC with the simulator to approximate a real device ? Does anyone use a multitouch touch screen PC for Android development ? I assume that this would work as the PC would recognize my fingers like the mouse, but I'd like to find out before purchasing the PC. Thanks for your help, Scott

  • Book resources for x86/x64 assembly programming on Win platform

    Hello, I ran a search for assembly language resources on stackoverflow.com and found some interesting results, but they seemed to boil down to two groups: 1) Assembly references to old ia32 architecture, such as the 80386 to Pentium 2) Windows agnostic books. Most of the commenters make the point that assembler is CPU dependent and that the OS is irrelevant, but it seems pointless to me to pick a book that has assembly examples that refer to MS-DOS interrupts and memory layouts. Likewise, learning assembler on Linux would seem to produce Linux executables Are there any: 1) Modern 2) x86/x64 3) on Windows platform - book resources available ? The reason I am targeting the Win platform is I would like to do low-level, OS internals programming, to supplement my Win C/C++ work. Thanks
