  • How to do a true Java ping?

    I have a device on a network that I am attempting to ping through my Java program. Through my windows command prompt, I can ping the device address fine and do a tracert on the address fine. Online, I have seen that in order to do a ping through Java you have to do the following: InetAddress.getByName(address).isReachable(timeout); But, when I use this code on my device address, it always returns false in my program. I am using the correct IPv4 address with a good timeout value. Also, if I use a localhost address, it works fine. Why can I ping the device through cmd, but not through my program? I have heard in various places that this is not a true ping. Is there a better way to emulate a ping in Java? Thanks

  • Cannot ping ubuntu server by hostname - can only ping by IP

    I have an unbuntu 9.10 server and have set the hostname to "fileserver" When I try to ping fileserver from a client machine it doesn't find it, however I can ping by the IP my router assigns it. I have tried changing the ip in /etc/hosts from this: 127.0.0.1 fileserver to this: 192.168.1.109 fileserver which is the ip being assigned. I had a previous install of this server and i had no issues with this - only difference in this install is i did not select any of the options such as LAMP, OpenSSH, etc during the install process. I can access the machine fine by ip using PuTTY. Any ideas?

  • Ping results "echo'd" out to a text file on Windows XP machine has unusual character rather than the outcome

    Here is the situation. I have a Windows XP machine that I would like to ping another machine and send the output to a text file for review at a later date. This is quite a standard question with several answers on this website and others. The issue I have is that when reviewing the txt file afterwards, the outcome of the ping appears as a strange character. A screenshot of the text file output can be found at the following link. Please note its the first 8 ping outputs that have a strange character. The %%B was me hoping that would output what I wanted! (Cannot upload image to any hosting websites because the company I work for seems to be afraid of them ....)     I am trying to ping one of my local host and checking CPU process to see how "Ping of death" attack behaves. I tried to ping my other PC which is in local network with 192.168.44.2 IP Address. I tried this, ping -l 5000 192.168.44.2 and I got error like this, ping: -l flag: Operation not permitted I am on MacOSX Lion. How can I remove this flag so machine can let me ping with preload?   • Cannot ping Google Public DNS on 8.8.8.8

    I have a weird problem on my Windows 7 (x64) computer. I seem to cannot ping the Google Public DNS on one of its addresses (while the other works fine). The peculiar thing is that it fails with the General failure. error message which usually means that there is a problem with a network adapter/base connectivity and not a timeout as one would expect. I checked my routing tables for any anomalies and I even flushed them but the problem seems unrelated. All the other hosts I tried ping fine (either respond or timeout). If I try to tracert or connect to the address via browser (yes, I know that it doesn't listen on port 80), it also fails instantaneously. The reason I need to ping 8.8.8.8 is that I commonly use it as a test of Internet conectivity due to it being rememberable. The problem occurs no matter where I connect to the Internet (it is a laptop computer). What could be the cause of this anomaly? Note: I use native IPv6 connectivity.

  • Ping and crawling not working, site still resolving

    Ok, so we're trying to figure out why the site of one of our clients isn't being crawled by Google (we've ruled out robots.txt or meta tags) When we go to the site, either IP address or domain name, the site resolves, everything works. However, Google is getting a 302 redirect (which it apparently isn't following for crawling), and when we ping the address, it times out (note, the site is still resolving in the browser throughout all of this). The site is built in ASP.Net (I assume C#) and so my thoughts were that it was an errant redirect rule, or some other sort of server side issue. We also thought that it might be due to incorrect domain pointing (but if we try to ping the IP, it doesn't work, so that sorta rules that out). We're really not sure what is causing all of these errors, or even if they have one single source. Anyone have any ideas what could be going on? Do you need any more information? To boil it down in a TL; dr: * Site resolving in browser, both IP and domain name. No problems here. * Site not being crawled by Google (gets a 302 it doesn't seem to follow) - it is not due to robots.txt or meta tags * Ping is not working for the IP address. This is very odd, because again, the IP address seems to work fine in the browser. * Our thoughts are either redirect rule issue, domain pointing issue, or possibly some errant code - or some combination of the three

  • Can't Ping - Wireless network of home

    Hello, This may seem like other ping problem, but I have tried a lot before posting it here. I have a linksys WRT54G - firmware v8.00.8. I have two laptops one windows vista (192.168.1.99) and Windows Xp (192.168.1.13) connected on WiFi . The Router's IP address is 192.168.1.4, and default gateway is the ADSL modem (192.168.1.1) connected through wire. The problem is that laptops can not ping each other, they can ping the gateway and the linksys router, and both can access internet. Following has been tried (I am pinging from XP machine to Vista): I saw that arp entires for Vista machines were not being populated, so I added static ARP entries. 192.168.1.99 00-19-7e-70-d0-4e static I checked on ethereal that an ICMP packet for MAC address of Vista machine does go out from XP machine towards the Vista machine, but never reaches the Vista machine. So its get eaten by the Router? I added Vista machine to DMZ in my linksys router, so that all the ports are open (In case it was an issue). Firewalls , antivirus etc were turned off, echo was enabled explicitly on vista, file sharing, network discovery were turned on. Network type was set to private. Unchecked everything in Router;s firewall, even though they are only meant for WAN requests. Is there anything else that I should try. Thanks.

    I have a Debian box which I'm trying to set up as a router and an Ubuntu box which I'm using as a client. My problem is that when the Ubuntu client tries to ping a server on the Internet, all the packets are lost (though, as you can see below, they seem to go to the server and back without problem). So, what I understand is that the ping packets are coming out of the Ubuntu box (10.1.1.12), to the router (10.1.1.1), from there to the next router (192.168.1.1) and reaching the remote server (X.X.X.X). Then they come back all the way to the Debian router, but they never reach the Ubuntu box back. What am I missing?   • Wireless Access Point - Can't ping other machines on the wireless network

    I have a wireless access point (Netgear), and I have it setup so that it has an IP address in the current subnet (let's say 192.168.2.0, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0). The machine that it is connected to via ethernet cable has an IP in the same subnet as the AP. The machines that are connected to the AP via the wireless connection also have an IP address in the same subnet as the rest of the network (192.168.2.0). All machines can ping the access point, but they cannot ping each other. I don't totally understand why, because there is connection and all of the machines are in the same subnet. I realize this is a layer 3 device, but is there an issue because of this AP's lack of gateway capabilities? (i.e. no routing table, etc.)

    I'm wondering what a maximum (practical) ping response time might be. As far as I know, there isn't a max defined anywhere (TTL, but that's hops, not time). As I think about it, I'm not sure I've ever seen a ping response time of more than a second or so. But as far as I know, there is nothing to stop a remote host from waiting (or being really busy) and not sending the response back for a few seconds. As a simple data point, I just pinged a number of servers around the world and the worst time I could find was 350ms.

After a lots of tested I can saw that my server can’t get into the router (192.168.1.1), and also into some others computers, but some other computers answer the ping command. In fact the same computer with the IP 192.168.1.9 didn't answer, but with the IP 192.168.1.63, it response! I have no routers, firewall, vlans or anything that disallow the traffic between computers, in fact when I changed the server IP address (192.168.1.109), I be able to ping the other computers and gateway, but if a back to the 192.168.1.108 the trouble comeback.     In a high traffic application, like an online auction system, few ms could determine 'to win or 'to lose' the 'battle'. I'm from Brazil. Here, I 'ping' local sites - like UOL - and receive replies in ~ 11ms. When I 'ping' US sites - like RackSpace - I receive replies in ~ 130 ms! The point is: I need a (very good like RackSpace [1]) infra-structure to host my killer online auction application, but there's no (RackSpace like) options in Brazil... Assuming that all users are located here, in Brazil, is it 'sine qua non' condition to host my application here, in Brazil? I think ~130 ms is a very high latency but, all users will receive this reply, sure? Well, where should I host my application? [1] Feel free to point me to any other very good host option other than RackSpace. I've cited it because I only know these guys...

Is there a way to tell nagios/icinga to use machine 192.168.1.1 and to ping 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 ? check_ping is pinging only machine defined in host_name from icinga server. Icinga is on completely different ip range 92.*.*.* Is there a way to do this to see VLAN workes fine?

  • Can ping localhost but can't browse

    I know this is a pretty common question but I did my research and couldn't find a solution for this issue. I'm configuring a development application server and I came to the point where I can ping both localhost and 127.0.0.1, but I cannot browse either of them from IE or Firefox. I can browse and ping other websites (such as google) just fine. I tried flushing the dns (ipconfig /flushdns), restarting the IIS Admin service, restarting IIS itself, etc, and nothing seems to work. The results from ipconfig /all shows IP Rounting Enabled = No and WINS Proxy Enabled = No. Hwat is intriguing to me is that I compared everything in IIS in the dev environment with the production environment and the settings are the same, but I can browse localhost in production, but not in dev! What could be causing the inability to browse localhost and 127.0.0.1 from IE and Firefox?

    I am trying to figure out this issue and am getting a weird error. We have two boxes which used to talk to one another on the network. Both are reachable via ssh from a separate network, which means they are able to talk to their default gateways just fine. When we try to ping from the linux machine to the linux machine, we get a bunch of timeouts. When we try to ping from the linux box back, we are getting connect: no such process.     PS3 is using the inbuilt wireless network adapter (I cannot change this) When I try to ping the PS3 from ANY computer which is on a wired ethernet connection, I get Request Timed Out errors.     We periodically get complaints of poor GUI (browser page) response that we need to explore. I am looking for a quick and cheap first check to see if the issue is network latency, or server performance. Has anyone encountered any discussion of ping time and perceived GUI response? I understand that GUI response is complicated, but it would be nice if we could find or develop a rule of thumb along the lines of "Hmmmm, ping is over 200, it might be network problems". Ideally, this lives in a script on the user's machine so that we can see the latency that they are seeing... (BASH, Linux). A reference to a good discussion page would be a fine answer, as would any recommendation of other source material.

The problem is PayPal doesn't work also Google Webmaster reported the site is down. The client spoke with support and they said there is no firewall or any other traffic filter on their side. My infrastructure looks like this: I have a D-LINK DIR-635 acting as my default gateway (192.168.0.1) A physical Windows 2012 Server (192.168.0.10) with the following roles: DHCP, DNS, AD DS and Hyper-V. A virtual Windows 2012 Server (192.168.0.50) which I intent to use as an IIS server (Role is not deployed yet). My virtual machine was able to get an IP address from the DHCP server and is working perfectly (I can ping the default gateway [by IP, FQDN or DNS Alias], the Hyper-V host and any site on the Internet (CNN.com for example). However I cannot ping the VM from my host. It says: Request Timed Out. Do you guys know what I might be doing wrong? Any support is appreciated! Thanks!

    I've started accepting remote desktop connections on one of my machines. If i connect the machine to my router using an Ethernet cable i am able to ping it and connect to it remotely (using RDP). However, if i connect the machine using wireless network i am unable to ping it (or access it using RDP). Although i can live with connecting that machine using an Ethernet cable i just wanted to know the reason why it doesn't work using wireless. Is the router not able to forward packets to that host if its connected using wireless? If yes, any solutions?

  • Sonicwall NSA 240, Configured for LAN and DMZ, X0 and X2 on same switch - ping issues

    Our Sonicwall vendor supplied and networked the NSA240 when we required a DMZ in our infrastructure. This was configured and appeared correct although VPN users periodically dropped DNS and Terminal Services. The vendor could not resolve and so the call was escalated to Sonicwall. The Sonicwall support engineer took a look and concluded that the X0 (LAN) and X2 (DMZ) intefaces were cabled to the same switch and so this is the issue.
