  • Ubuntu most menu items dark-on-dark

    - by krzysz00
Since to ubuntu 10.04 upgrade move of my drop-down menus have been dark-on-dark text, which becomes readable (changed background) when selected. I don't know what's causing this but it's a problem on Ambience and Radiance both. Any hints?

  • Determine wifi capabilities of Windows box (with WSUS install rules)

    - by Hagen von Eitzen
I need to determine if a computer is in fact a laptop with wifi capabilities (with emphasis on wifi rather than laptop). More precisely, I want to distribute a piece of software I wrote via WSUS and Local Update Publisher to those clients. To this end, I want to create appropriate "Package installable rules", that is simple rule used bay the Windows Update Service on the client to decide beforehand whether or not an update/installation package is applicable. Typically, such "installabel rules" are logical combinations of rules of type "File exists", "Registry Key exists", "WMI Query", "MSI Product Installed", so I'd prefer one of those methods. The method I hope someone here can help me find should work with Win 7/Vista, preferably also with XP. My guess is that WMI query is the way to go, but I have little experience in that. I have found that one can e.g. query for EnclosureType and that might detect a laptop. However, I would be much happier if an actually available wifi interface would be detected. Does anyone have an idea how to approach this? If there is anything you need me to clarify, don't hesitate to comment.

  • MySQL ODBC + SSL with only the SSL Cipher option?

    - by sdek
Does anybody know how I can have an SSL encrypted connection over MySQL ODBC without the cert options? So I asked my web host to setup a MySQL+SSL connection so that we can access our website's database via ODBC or MySQL Query Browser (or the likes). I am able to get an encrypted connection with the standard mysql client and MySQL Query Browser, but I can't get the ODBC connection to work. Looking for a little help... The way they set it up is a little different from the way I have read about on the interweb. The host didn't setup a cert, or at least I don't think so - I don't need to specify any cert options in my connection. I just need to specify the ssl cipher. Here is how I connect with the mysql client: mysql -h myhost.com -u myuser --ssl-cipher=3DES -p That works to get an encrypted connection. At least I am pretty sure it works because when I run mysql> \s I get SSL: Cipher in use is EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA Also, when I put EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA into the SSL Cipher field of MySQL Query Browser (without specifying any other SSL options) it connects just fine. But then when I try to do the same thing with my MySQL ODBC 3.5.1 and 5.1 I get a generic error. Here is the error from the 5.1 Driver. Connection Failed: [HY000] [MySQL][ODBC 5.1 Driver]SSL connection error

  • ipv6 reverse DNS delegation

    - by user1709492
    I currently have 2001:1973:2303::/48 assigned to me and i'll be assigning /64's to customer's I'd like to have 1 zonefile for the /48 where i can essentially point / redirect query to different nameservers. Example ( Desired effect ) 2001:1973:2303:1234::/64 -> ns1.example.com, ns2.example.com 2001:1973:2303:2345::/64 -> ns99.example2.com, ns100.example2.com 2001:1973:2303:4321::/64 -> ns1.cust1.com, ns2.cust1.com Current /48 zonefile $TTL 3h $ORIGIN 3.0.3.2.3.7.9.1.1.0.0.2.ip6.arpa. @ IN SOA ns3.example.ca. ns4.example.ca. ( 2011071030 ; serial 3h ; refresh after 3 hours 1h ; retry after 1 hour 1w ; expire after 1 week 1h ) ; negative caching TTL of 1 hour IN NS ns3.example.ca. IN NS ns4.example.ca. 1234 IN NS ns1.example.com. NS ns2.example.com. 2345 IN NS ns99.example2.com. NS ns100.example2.com. 4321 IN NS ns1.cust1.com. NS ns2.cust1.com. Where am i going wrong ? My request seems simple to me atleast. To put it in terms of firewalling i want to redirect traffic client queries 2001:1973:2303:4321::1 - ns3.example.ca sees the request and redirects the query to ns1.cust1.com - ns1.cust1.com answers the query with omg.itworks.ca ( provided ns1.cust1.com is properly configured.

  • Cannot reset an network interfaces without a reboot

    - by yangchenyun
I have edited the /etc/network/interfaces file and I use the sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart. After restart, the eth1 interfaces don't setup properly. I need a hard reboot to enable this configuration. Meanwhile the command line hints: Running /etc/init.d/networking restart is deprecated because it may not enable again some interfaces. Am I using the run command to restart network interfaces? auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.1.87 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1

  • OpenDNS-like 404 page in home network

    - by Dmbekker
People who use OpenDNS and go to a non-existing domain are getting a nice fancy search page telling them that the domain doesn't exists instead of the browser error page. Here in my home network we have a Windows 2008 R2 server with the DNS role enabled. Is there any way to make my own fancy looking error page to show up at all computers when they enter a domain not found by the local DNS server and the forwarders / root hints servers?

  • Does putting the XFS log on an SSD significantly improve performance?

    - by Paul Wagland
I have a five disk array running XFS in RAID5, and I would like to improve it's performance. I have seen some hints that putting the log onto a separate device can help, does putting the log onto an SSD help dramtically? In theory, it should, but I have not been able to find any case studies where someone has actually done this, and buying an SSD and then having it not work well would be inconvenient at best…

  • What's throttling the database?

    - by Troels Arvin
Hardware: Intel x86_64 with 192GB of RAM. OS: CentOS 5.4 x86_64. DBMS: DB2 v. 9.7.1 64 bit. During certain special workloads (e.g. parallel REORGs/RUNSTATs), I've seen the server transporting 450MB/s with 25000IO/s (yes, there is probably some storage system caching happening here) while all CPU cores were happily working in an even mix of usermode/wait. And disk benchmark tools can also bring some very satisfying bandwith and IO/s numbers to the table. On the other hand, we also have another scenario: A single rather complex query with at least one large table scan. db2's "list applications" reports that the query is Executing (not locked). IO: At most 10MB/s, 500 IO/s; CPU: two cores in 99.9% wait state, all other cores 100% idle. The tables which the query reads from have been altered to have LOCKSIZE=TABLE, so I would think that lock list work is zero. What's going on in such a situation? What tools/snapshots/... can I use to gain better insight in such a case?

  • ping incorrectly pinging 127.0.0.1

    - by AlexW
I've got an odd DNS issue. I'm running a dual ipv4/ipv6 environment on Linux. • named responding recursive on norecurse queries

    - by Keks
I have a server on which named is running. It is intercepted with another named server which it is not aware of. Querying the first named server results in timeouts. The server tries to resolve the query recursively. During that the firewall redirects the DNS Request from the first named server to the second one (the query from the first one is addressed to a e.g. a root server and has its "Recursion desired" bit set to 0). Despite that the second named responds to this request with a entirely or at least 1 level more resolved response than the first named server expects. So it ends up with a timeout even though it got a correct name server or even the full IP for the queried domain. In the first case the first name server tries to follow the authority domain ignoring the coresponding glue record and ends up in a loop it aborts: queried: google.com -> got from named#2: ns1.google.com -> ignore glue record and query: ns1.google.com -> got authority from named#2: google.com In the second case it ignores the answer section with the correct IP and instead tries to follow the name servers from the authority section, which ends up in the same dead end as case 1. So how can it be that the second named responds with recursive results even though the bit was explicitly set to 0 in the request from the first named?

  • NBX v3001 new phone account: all incoming calls directly diverted to voicemail

    - by Pitto
That's my problem: I've added a new user in our NBX v3001 3com (now hp) and all the incoming calls are diverted, without ringing, to the voicemail. The phone is a Sip Endpoint Terminal and I really don't have a clue why this is happening since I've installed other identical phones without troubles. I've also tried deleting and re-adding the user and changing the extension: nothing. Any hints to solve?

  • Configure APC for maximum hit rate

    - by Steven De Groote
I'm currently running php5 with APC, the latter with default configuration. However after setting up munin to monitor APC, I'm surprised by the results: apc.shm_size: 30 apc.gc_ttl: 3600 apc.ttl: 0 Used: 14MB Request rate: 100 requests/second Fragmentation: 0 Hit ratio: 80% (dropping to 0 a few times per hour) So the obvious question: how can I adapt the configuration to achieve a higher hitrate. I find it very strange that the available memory is not fully used which the hitratio is still below what I would expect. Thank for any hints!

If I run multiple scp copies, each one will do 120MB/min, so it is not the network as far as I can see. Any hints on how to tweak the Solaris settings to open a bigger pipe. • Why is the disk making my motherboard beep?

Thankfully it doesn't happen often, but it drives me nuts when it does. Anybody know where this sound might be coming from, or have any hints as to how to track it down? Edit: The problem appears to be with the processor, the correlation with disk access was coincidental. Thanks for all the answers.
