• What ever happened to the Defense Software Reuse System (DSRS)?

  I've been reading some papers from the early 90s about a US Department of Defense software reuse initiative called the Defense Software Reuse System (DSRS). The most recent mention of it I could find was in a paper from 2000 - A Survey of Software Reuse Repositories Defense Software Repository System (DSRS) The DSRS is an automated repository for storing and retrieving Reusable Software Assets (RSAs) [14]. The DSRS software now manages inventories of reusable assets at seven software reuse support centers (SRSCs). The DSRS serves as a central collection point for quality RSAs, and facilitates software reuse by offering developers the opportunity to match their requirements with existing software products. DSRS accounts are available for Government employees and contractor personnel currently supporting Government projects... ...The DoD software community is trying to change its software engineering model from its current software cycle to a process-driven, domain-specific, architecture-based, repository-assisted way of constructing software [15]. In this changing environment, the DSRS has the highest potential to become the DoD standard reuse repository because it is the only existing deployed, operational repository with multiple interoperable locations across DoD. Seven DSRS locations support nearly 1,000 users and list nearly 9,000 reusable assets. The DISA DSRS alone lists 3,880 reusable assets and has 400 user accounts... The far-term strategy of the DSRS is to support a virtual repository. These interconnected repositories will provide the ability to locate and share reusable components across domains and among the services. An effective and evolving DSRS is a central requirement to the success of the DoD software reuse initiative. Evolving DoD repository requirements demand that DISA continue to have an operational DSRS site to support testing in an actual repository operation and to support DoD users. The classification process for the DSRS is a basic technology for providing customer support [16].   First you need to implement the simple bpel process like this : In my current project, I inherited a lot of OSB components that have been developed by (former) team members, but they all lack unit tests. This is a situation I really dislike, since this makes it much harder to refactor or bug-fix the existing code base. So, for all newly created components (and components I have to bug-fix) I strive to add unit tests. Of course, the unit tests will be created using my favourite testing tool: soapUI ! Unit of test The unit test should be created for the service composition, which in OSB terms should be the proxy service combination with its business service. Now, since you do not want to rely on any other services, you should provide mock services for all services invoked from your Component-Under-Test. In a previous article, I wrote about mocking your services in soapUI. While this approach would also be valid here, creating a mock service (and certainly deploying it on a separate WebServer) does violate one of the core principles of unit testing: to make your unit tests as self-contained as possible, i.e. not depending on any external components. In this article, I will show you how to achieve this by simply providing a mock response inside your unit test. Scenario The scenario I implement for testing is a simple currency converter; the external request consists of a from and a to currency, and an amount (in currency from). The service will perform an exchange rate lookup using the WebServiceX CurrencyConverter and return a response to the caller consisting of both the source and target currencies and amounts. • iPhone app development pricing [closed]

  I currently manage a website design and development company that integrates itself with print work too. I've been co manager for a couple of months now, however business is slow at the moment. I got an email today from a potential client asking if we do iPhone app development. Obviously we do not. But, seeing as there aren't many other project on the go at the moment, why not give it a go? Searching Google was my first option. I did a bit of background scrubbing. Discovered that I need certain developer tools etc. This can be arranged easily enough. The reason I came to Stack Exchange is for answers to these questions. I am a competant programmer and have had experience in Java, PHP, JavaScript, C++ and C#. So how long would it take me to come to grips with Objective-C? Assuming an 8 hour working day. Not only the language but also the iPhone interface libraries (if any exist) and other native libraries? The potential client said the app will be a catalogue. So I'm assuming either the data will be pulled online or in some kind of local database. I know the requirements are vague but does anyone have any idea of how mug time this would take? To learn the language, design the architecture and code? 40 Hours? 80 Hours? My final question kind of depends on the first two. But obviously the potential client wants a quote. And I have got no idea how much an app costs. I did some research and found a huge range in differences. The majority of the cost would cone from the time to develops the app! So to summarise. How long would it take me to be comfortable coding Objective-C, taking into consideration my past knowledge? I'm assuming a day or two to fully understand but you really don't know. How long would it take me to develop an app? How much should I charge (approx) for the development of this app?

• How can you tell whether to use Composite Pattern or a Tree Structure, or a third implementation?

  I have two client types, an "Observer"-type and a "Subject"-type. They're both associated with a hierarchy of groups. The Observer will receive (calendar) data from the groups it is associated with throughout the different hierarchies. This data is calculated by combining data from 'parent' groups of the group trying to collect data (each group can have only one parent). The Subject will be able to create the data (that the Observers will receive) in the groups they're associated with. When data is created in a group, all 'children' of the group will have the data as well, and they will be able to make their own version of a specific area of the data, but still linked to the original data created (in my specific implementation, the original data will contain time-period(s) and headline, while the subgroups specify the rest of the data for the receivers directly linked to their respective groups). However, when the Subject creates data, it has to check if all affected Observers have any data that conflicts with this, which means a huge recursive function, as far as I can understand. So I think this can be summed up to the fact that I need to be able to have a hierarchy that you can go up and down in, and some places be able to treat them as a whole (recursion, basically). Also, I'm not just aiming at a solution that works. I'm hoping to find a solution that is relatively easy to understand (architecture-wise at least) and also flexible enough to be able to easily receive additional functionality in the future. Is there a design pattern, or a good practice to go by, to solve this problem or similar hierarchy problems? EDIT: Here's the design I have: The "Phoenix"-class is named that way because I didn't think of an appropriate name yet. But besides this I need to be able to hide specific activities for specific observers, even though they are attached to them through the groups. A little Off-topic: Personally, I feel that I should be able to chop this problem down to smaller problems, but it escapes me how. I think it's because it involves multiple recursive functionalities that aren't associated with each other and different client types that needs to get information in different ways. I can't really wrap my head around it. If anyone can guide me in a direction of how to become better at encapsulating hierarchy problems, I'd be very glad to receive that as well.

  The cost center segment on the General Information page in Oracle Internet Expenses derives its label from the Prompt entered on the KFF setup. Changing this is not possible with the simple personalization, the details below provide the instructions to change the Prompt. Create a custom class, I call it CustomHeaderKffCO.java in the package oracle.apps.ap.oie.entry.header.webui  (or any other). This class will have to extend from oracle.apps.ap.oie.entry.header.webui.HeaderKffCO. • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 3: Key Concerns

Keys Concerns Of Smartphones In The Enterprise These are the factors that you need to be aware of and address in order to build successful enterprise smartphone applications.  Most of them have nothing to do with the application itself as you will see here. Managing Devices Managing devices is a factor that is going to effect how much your company will have to spend outside of developing the applications.  How will you track the devices within the corporation?  How often will you have to replace phones and as a consequence have to upgrade your applications to support new phones?  The devices can represent a significant investment of capital.  If these questions are not addressed you will find a number of hidden costs throughout the life of your solution. Purchase or BYOD We have seen the trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) lately within the enterprise.  How many meetings have you been in where someone is on their personal iPad, iPhone, Android phone or Windows Phone?  The issue is if you can afford to support everyone's choice in device? That is a lot to take on even if you only support the current release of each platform. Do you go with the most popular device or do you pick a platform that best matches your current ecosystem and distribute company owned devices?  There is no easy answer here, but you should be able give some dollar value to both hardware and development costs related to platform coverage. Asset Tracking/Insurance Smartphones are devices that are easier to lose or have stolen than laptops and desktops. Not only do you have your normal asset management concerns but also assignment of financial responsibility. You also will need to insure them against damage and theft and add legal documents that spell out the responsibilities of the employees that use these devices. Personal vs. Corporate Data What happens when you terminate an employee?  How do you recover the device?  What happens when they have put personal data on the device?  These are all situation that can cause possible loss of corporate intellectual property or legal repercussions of reclaiming a device with personal data on it.  Policies need to be put in place that protect the company from being exposed to type of loss.  This can mean significant legal and procedural cost that you need to consider. • Finding "Stuff" In OUM

  One of the first questions people asked when they start using the Oracle Unified Method (OUM) is “how do I find X ?” Well of course no one is really looking for “X”!! but typically an OUM user might know the Task ID, or part of the Task Name, or maybe they just want to find out if there is any content within OUM that is related to a couple of keys words they have in their mind. Here are three quick tips I give people: 1. Open up one of the OUM Views, then click “Expand All”, and then use your Browser’s search function to locate a key Word. For example, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer: <CTRL> F, then type in a key Word, i.e. Architecture This is fast and easy option to use, but it only searches the current OUM page 2. Use the PDF view of OUM Open up one of the OUM Views, and then click the PDF View button located at the top of the View. Depending on your Browser’s settings, the PDF file will either open up in a new Window, or be saved to your local machine. In either case, once the PDF file is open, you can use the built in PDF search commands to search for key words across a large portion of the OUM Method Pack. This is great option for searching the entire Full Method View of OUM, including linked HTML pages, however the search will not included linked Documents, i.e. Word, Excel. 3. Use your operating systems file index to search for key words This is my favorite option, and one I use virtually every day. I happen to use Windows Search, but you could also use Google Desktop Search, of Finder on a MAC. All you need to do (on a Windows machine) is to make sure your local OUM folder structure is included in the Windows Index. Go to Control Panel, select Indexing Options, and ensure your OUM folder is included in the Index, i.e. C:/METHOD/OM40/OUM_5.6 Once your OUM folders are indexed, just open up Windows Search (or Google Desktop Search) and type in your key worlds, i.e. Unit Testing The reason I use this option the most is because the Search will take place across the entire content of the Indexed folders, included linked files. • Agile team with no dedicated Tester members. Insane or efficient?

  I'm a software developer. I've been thinking a lot about the efficiency of the Software Testers I've worked with so far in my career. In fact, I've been thinking a lot about the Software Testers role in general and have reached a potentially contentious conclusion: Non-developer Software Testers staff are less efficient at software testing than developers. Now, before everyone gets upset, hear me out. This isn't mere opinion: Software Testing and Software Development both require a lot of skills in common: Problem solving Thinking about corner cases Analytical skills The ability to define clear and concise step-by-step scenarios What developers have in addition to this is the ability to automate their tests. Yes, I know non-dev testers can automate their tests too, but that often then becomes a test maintenance issue. Because automating UI tests is essentially programming, non-dev members encounter all the same difficulties software developers encounter: Copy-pasta, lack of code reusibility/maintainability, etc. So, I was wondering. Why not replace all non-dev roles with developer roles? Developers have the skills required to perform Software Testing tasks, and they have the skills to automate tests and keep them maintainable. Would the following work: Hire a bunch of developers and split them into 2 roles: Software developers Software developers doing testing (some manual, mostly automated by writing integration tests, unit tests, etc) Software developers doing application support. (I've removed this as it is probably a separate question altogether) And, in our case since we're doing Agile development, rotate the roles every sprint or two. Also, if at all possible, try to have people spend their Developer stints and Testing stints on different projects. Ideally you would want to reduce the turnover rate per rotation. So maybe you could have 2 groups and make sure the rotation cycles of the groups are elided. So, for example, if each rotation was two sprints long, the two groups would have their rotations 1 sprint apart. That way there's only a 50% turn-over rate per sprint. Am I crazy, or could this work? (Obviously a key component to this working is that all devs want to be in the 3 roles. Let's assume I'm starting a new company and I can hire these ideal people) Edit I've removed the phrase "QA", as apparently we are using it incorrectly where I work.

• Should I use my own public API on my site (via JS)?

  First of all, this question is far more different other 'public api questions' like this: Should a website use its own public API?, second, sorry for my English. You can find the question summarized at the bottom of this question. What I want to achieve is a big website with a public api, so who like programming (like me) and likes my website, can replicate my website's data with a much better approach (of course with some restrictions). Almost everything could be used by the public API. Because of this, I was thinking about making the whole website AJAX driven. There would be parts of the API which would be limited only to my website (domain), like login, registering. There would be only an INTERFACE on the client side, which would use the public and private API to make this interface working. The website would be ONLY CLIENT SIDE, well, I mean, the website would only use AJAX to use the api. How do I imagine this? The website would be like a mobile application, the application only sending a request to a webserver, which returns a json, the application parses it, and uses it to advance in the application. (e.g.: login) My thoughts: Pros: The whole website is built up by javascript, this means I don't need to transfer the html to the client, saving bandwidth. (I hope so) Anyone can use up the data of my website to make their own cool things. (Is this a con or pro? O_O) The public API is always in use, so I can see if there are any error. Cons: Without Javascript the website is unusable. The bad guys easily can load the server with requesting too much data (like Request Per Second 10000), but this can be countered via limiting this with some PHP code and logging. Probably much more work So the question in some words is: Should I build my website around my own api? Is it good to work only on the client side? Is this good for a big website? (e.x.: facebook, yeah facebook is a different story, but could it run with an 'architecture' like this?)

Aside from that, you need all the dependencies required by the Code Completion API, as described in the Code Completion tutorial on the NetBeans Platform Learning Trail. Once you've done that, go to the Project Properties dialog of the application and then in the "ide" cluster, include "Plain Editor" and "Plain Editor Library". I.e., two additional JARs only. These two are needed because you've set the MIME type to "text/plain", which is needed because DialogBinding expects the JEditorPane to have a MIME type. And now everything works. Press Ctrl-Space in your JEditorPane and, because your CompletionProvider is registered in "text/x-dialog-binding" (via the annotation on CompletionProvider), your completion items are displayed. (The only MIME type for binding a document to a component, by default, is "text/x-dialog-binding", which means the next step is for someone to figure out how to support multiple different of such MIME types, since each JEditorPane in your application is likely to require its own specific code completion support.) I think this is a really workable solution for real scenarios where JEditorPanes in NetBeans Platform applications require code completion.

• Differences between a retail and wholesale website, and how difficult would it be to integrate them? [closed]

  I was told to come here for some guidance, I know that my questions can be quite broad, but I just really want some kind of direction to go towards (links, articles, etc). So here it goes: For the past month I have been planning and started implementing a wholesale website, but plans got changed on me and I need to allow both retail and wholesale orders which will also depend on whether the account is a regular customer or also has a seller account. There are various types of products and it has been decided that I would use subcategories as tables to organize them and allow various specific item fields. So here are some of my specific questions: How different is the database structure for each item to be available for both wholesale and retail? Will it just be adding a quantity column and have two different pricing, or much more complicated? I am unaware if there's any price tables but would that be more difficult? They use Quickbooks POS software, how difficult/inefficient will it be to update inventory quantities if they have like 2000-4000 products? And what would be the best ways to extract the information and update the system? I know it export an excel spreadsheet so maybe a suggested php plugin for it? How difficult is this project in your professional opinion, and how big should a team usually be? (At the moment it is just me.) Projected time for planning, implementation, and quality assurance in accordance to team size? I am an entry level developer and I know that I do not have enough knowledge to direct myself on this website...What kind of web developer skills will I need to find to help me? (My company is willing to hire people to get this website done as fast as possible.) Also, what would be some great questionnaires to ask the product stakeholder about what he wants from the website? (He has made it clear he is neither computer or internet savvy...) Sorry for the amount of questions, I'm an entry level web developer and do not have a senior to look up to for guidance. I have knowledge in HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin. I have never used any frameworks like Zend, Magento, etc, and is doing this all from scratch. So far the website is built in an object oriented way, MVC architecture to the best of my abilities, but I have many doubts because I would really want to have this done right. If I have been unclear on some parts please tell me and I'll add more detail. I'm sure I'll have more additional questions later on, if anyone is open to that please tell me. Thanks in advance!

• Core i7-620M vs Core i5-540M

  Hi, I'm recommending a laptop to a colleague, and the specific laptop he has chosen has the above CPU chips as options. Both chips have 2-cores/4-threads. The i7-620M is a 2.66 GHz (4MB Cache) while the i5-540M is a 2.53 GHz (3MB Cache)....both Arrandale architecture. He is a .NET programmer working with SQL Server and Oracle, and occasionally uses Adobe Fireworks for web-related design elements. He also loves playing around in Adobe Premiere Pro, and does a lot of media/video work. Would you notice any significant performance difference between the 2? The laptop manufacturer claims that the battery life on both is the same irrespective of the chip used (although I find that hard to believe), but there is a major cost difference between them, with the Core i7-620M being the more expensive. According to http://ark.intel.com, the one thing that seems different (besides the obvious speeds/frequencies/etc) is a feature called "Embedded" - what is this exactly? Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. • Good bug tracking with Sharepoint?

  At my place of work, it has been decided to move many processes to Sharepoint. I'm now looking into how Sharepoint can be used for bug tracking (à la Mantis, FogBugz etc. but within Sharepoint). Specifically, we're using a collaboration room and the solution must work inside that. I know that I can create lists using an "Issue tracker" template, but it lacks workflow, integrated correspondence (like FogBugz), and audit log (any user can edit any field any time, without it being noted anywhere). That's not sufficient, so I am looking for "bigger" solutions but haven't yet found anything at all. This question is similar but aims at Helpdesk use; we aim at bug tracking and change requests to a system. I'm open to suggestions! As I'm not an administrator, I can't just grab a Sharepoint component and install it for testing. I'm looking for experiences, documentation, white papers, screen shots -- the actual downloadable will be relevant later. Ideally, some of these matters should be covered: Support for different ticket types (bug, feature, inquiry, internal task). Configurable workflow per ticket type, no fixed number of steps. Configurable read/write permissions per field and per workflow status. Configurable dashboard for managers with nice charts. Configurable email notifications. Correspondence à la FogBugz.   Hi there, I'm trying to get a local LAMP setup on my Ubuntu desktop.   We have several Windows 2003 servers with print services for Unix on them, and which allow Linux machines running CUPS to use printers defined to CUPS with the URI lpd://printer_server/printer_queue_name - they work. An attempt to provide different printers on a different Windows 2003 server with print services for Unix newly enabled causes CUPS to behave like this: a newly defined printer will be in state "Idle". An attempt to print causes CUPS to change the printer state to "Disabled".   I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa 1538 laptops and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (Kernel 2.6.32). Main problem is that the fans of the notebook are always on even when the temperature is low. Another problem is that the display brightness can not be adjusted. Since some years I use Dell laptops and never experienced any ACPI problems so I thought that it is no longer needed to fix ACPI tables but now I have this crap of a laptop and I think I have to do it. Unfortunately I need some help repairing the DSDT. • Windows 7 on a 64-bit computer

  I read on Wikipedia that Windows 7 on a 64-bit PC needs twice as much RAM as on a 32-bit PC. I understand why is that: every number stored in memory takes 8 bytes rather than just 4. That, in simple terms, means that your amount of RAM is reduced to half when you use Windows 7 on a 64-bit computer. Now, I have a Intel Core 2 Duo Laptop with Windows Vista right now (2 GB of RAM). My question is: Since Core 2 is a 64-bit architecture, if I upgrade to Windows 7 will my laptop be working as if it had just 1 GB of RAM? Or... to say it in other words: Having a 64-bit PC with Windows 7 do you need twice as much RAM as you need on a 32-bit PC to have the same performance? If I am right, then I'd say it's a terrible business to have a 64-bit computer and Windows 7 on it (I hope I am mistaken, though). Follow-up: After some answers, I'm realizing it's not the same thing to have a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit PC than a 64-bit OS on a 64-bit PC. Apparently, the problem of Windows 7 requiring twice as much RAM on 64-bit architectures is when you have both the OS and PC supporting 64 bits. I'd like new answers to address this issue. Also, is it possible to have more that 4 GB of RAM on a 64-bit PC using a 32-bit version of Windows?

• Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 R2, and Registry Backups

  Hi folks! As a developer, I've installed various instances of SQL Sever (2000, 2005, 2008, R2) from all the ways back to 2003 and I've never had an install fail on me....until yesterday. I was installing SQL Server 2008 R2 onto a Windows Server 2008 R2 hosted virtual server and the install finished, but failed on every component. To make matters worse, it was in a state in which I could not uninstall it either, even using command line options! I dug around a bit, but didn't get very far with it. The error is enigmatic and Google didn't turn up much hope. So today, I am going to try again after having the VM image wiped overnight. My question is how can I guard against the same failure today? I don't mind if it fails, but then I know it may be something wrong with the base image I'm getting from the hosting company. I really don't feel like paying another $20 to wipe the VM and I have no idea why it failed. Is it enough for me to backup the registry so that I can restore it in case it fails? What about the installation files? Do I need to have a tool to clean that out, too? Sorry, I'm no sys admin so no real experience with backup/restore aside from System Restore! So any advice would be appreciated!

• XP machines on Domain not reporting WMI Data in a 2003 Server Environment

  I am running into a very quirky issue and I hope someone out there can help. We use a monitoring program for several networks we oversee that is WMI data dependent for a great deal of it's functionality. The Windows 2000 Professional workstations, as well as the 2003 servers in our network report WMI data fine, the Windows XP professional machines will not let me view them from within the WMI snap in for MMC (they return a Win32: Access Denied) error. I am of course logged in with an account with domain admin privileges on the domain controller when I attempt it. DCOM is enabled in component services, and the remote security option is set to allow as well. If we remove the machine from the domain and rejoin it, some workstations will show up as WMI enabled temporarily and then when I try to access them again later I get the access denied error again out of the blue. Hoping someone out there has had a similar problem or they have advice. I have had this problem with the firewall turned on or off. Thanks for your time! -Az

• Disable raid member check upon mount to mount damaged nvidia raid1 member

  Hi, A friend of mine destroyed his Nvidia RAID1 array somehow and in trying to fix it, he ended up with a non-working array. Because of the RAID metadata, the actual disk data was stored at an offset from the beginning. I was able to identify this offset with dd and a hexeditor and then I used losetup to create a loop device with the proper offset, so that I could mount the partition. It was then that I ran into problems, namely that mount says: "mount: unknown filesystem type 'nvidia_raid_member'". I also had this when trying to mount a Linux MD component the other day, and because I can remember that doing that in the past worked, I surmised that it may be some kind of protection. I therefore booted an old Sysrescue CD and tried it there, which worked (because of the older version of mount/libc/kernel/whatever). I still need to try to get more data, and because I don't want to keep using that SysrecueCD, I'd like to be able to mount the disk on my normal system. So, my question is: can the check for a disk being a raid member be disabled? I guess I could also zero out blocks that look like the raid block, but I'd rather not... I made an image of the disk with par2 data, so it's revertable, but still...
