• Advice for building a browser-based audio mixer up to 32 tracks

  As a personal hobby I am looking to build an online audio mixer where I can upload individual instrument tracks, control individual volumes of each track, and export the mixed down version. I've been trying (and have come pretty close) with javascript. I really would like to stay away from flash if possible, but I'm really looking for suggestions for technologies to try. If anyone has any suggestions on languages that are good at stuff like this or libraries that I am missing, please let me know! I have a test environment that I have been using: http://driverstestpractice.com/sandbox Currently all tracks on the site are set to the click track in order to test the track sync (which as you can tell is a little off)! • Unable to access static var from Document Class in AS3

  I have a Document class called "CityModule", and an asset with class "City". Below is the coe for each. For some reason, I am unable to access the static variables of the City class from CityModule: CityModule.as: package { public class CityModule extends MovieClip { public function CityModule() { var buildings:Array = City.getBuildings(); } } } } City.as: package { import flash.display.MovieClip; public class City extends MovieClip { private static var _buildings:Array = [ {className:'City.Generic1', type:'generic'}, {className:'City.Generic2', type:'generic'}, {className:'City.Generic3', type:'generic'} ]; public function City(){ //empty } public static function getBuildings():Array{ return _buildings; } } } Doing this gives me a "Call to a possibly undefined method getBuildings" error. If I instantiate an instance of City, I can see any public/ getters/ setters perfectly fine. But static isn't working...

• Determining which video format to use

  I want to upload a video file and convert it to flash and 3gp/mp4. No problem, plenty of tuts for this out there using paperclip and ffmpeg. For some reason I thought there was a tut that showed if std browser play flv but if mobile then use 3gp/mp4 but can't seem to find it. Any one know if there is a tut like this out there? Else, Can I tell paperclip which is flv and 3gp/mp4. Then later call something in the view like video_url(:flv) or video_url(:mp4) or set this globally if mobile?

  I've been on and off intrested in making a text based browser game. I have been turned off by the idea because of the daunting amount of things to learn. PHP (or another sever side scripting language) Javascript HTML MySql And the fact of severs and apache.. Can I just pay for web hosting and by-pass having to set-up apache? Also how long will it take me to learn all thoose things well enough to start work on my game? Should I just stick with Flash and then C# for XNA?

• Can I use Blender to create 3D wall image viewer application under Linux?

  Hi, Is that possible to use Blender to create Cooliris-like 3D wall image viewer application under Linux? I don't see many people use Blender (BGE) to create desktop application, so I am wondering if this is possible. People normally use Blender for modeling/movie and game engine. I can not find a good way to create 3D application in Linux so far. I was thinking about pyQT+opengl. But I feel that is hard to do. No robust and easy-to-use qt+opengl toolkit available from my research. I know a little bit of Blender, that's why I am asking if Blender is an alternative solution. (python is preferred) The image viewer doesn't have to be windowed. It can be full screen, like a game?. I would like to add many cool effects into this application. Hopefully cooler than Cooliris which is written in flash. Thanks a lot.

• Firing a Keyboard Event at the Body - JavaScript (?)

  I've done a lot of research on this but have come up empty handed. What I would like to do is invoke or create an event for the right arrow key (Key Code 39). I was planning on using an onclick event inside an tag to go to a function where this event could be 'fired'. Any help would be appreciated. If anyone needs context, I have a jQuery content slider that's functionality is very hard to alter and currently the functionality I need to emulate only occurs when a user hits the right arrow on their keyboard. What I would like to do is tie an onclick() event to a image that when clicked on fires the right keyboard event and the content will slide. • Is there a way to show a 3-D surface plot in the browser?

  I've got a bunch of data for 3-D surface plots. I want to build a quick web interface to let me browse through that data. Are there any (free) packages out there that can easily show surface plots? I found this question but the suggested libraries did not support surface plots. If it requires a plugin like flash / java that is fine. This is for prototyping so a quick 'n dirty solution is preferred. Right now, the only option I have come up with is to use gnuplot to serve up static images. It would be awesome if there was some way to provide an interactive 3-D surface plot in the browser.

However, I want to modify it so that it pulls the number from the HTML, rather than setting it in the script. I tried the following, but it just shows "NAN." • Threading Problems in ActionScript 2.0?

  Is it possible to have concurrency problems (thread competition) in an onEnterFrame method in ActionScript 2.0? I have written this cheesy code as a guard: if (!busy) { // I suspect some threading problems: is that even possible in flash busy = true; movePanels(); busy = false; } but this is no assurance against thread competition. If so, how can I do a basic semaphore/lock? Note: I suspect threading problems in my app, but if they're impossible, I'll check my code differently.

• How to debug this?

  I have an application which takes measurements every second (I am running it in demo mode & generating random data, so the problem is not to do with reading from devices attached to the serial port). After 5 or 6 minutes it hangs. I have added try // entire body of procedure/function goes here except on E: Exception do begin MessageDlg('Internal coding error in <function name>()', mtError, [mbOK], 0); end; end; to every single function (and Application.Run() in the project file), but I don't see any message dialogs. Any idea how I can test this?

• AspectFit Not Working for Transformed UIImageView

  I have a UIImageView inside a subview and I'm trying to get an AspectFit content mode working how I want for a 90 degree transformation. Here is a demo app of what I mean https://github.com/rdetert/image-scale-test If you run the app and hold it in a landscape orientation (app runs in landscape) you'll see that the image does not stretch from left edge to right edge. What seems to be happening is that the AspectFit works correctly for the portrait/default orientation, but then the image simply gets rotated the image after the fact. How can I make it auto stretch? I think the fact that it is inside a subview may have something to do with it?

• Optimum php.ini and my.cnf settings for a small Drupal 7 site on a virtual server

  I looking for advice on how to set up the default configuration of php.ini and my.cnf for a small site (100 pages) with very little traffic (300 visitors per day). All pages have a bit of text, some images, no video, no audio, no flash/silverlight, very little javascript and jquery. For tracking I'm using GA and Piwik. The main site database is around 50MB. The site is hosted on a virtual server with 20GB RAM and 6 vCPUs so there's hopefully a lot of muscle to make it run very fast. I don't know much about tweaking php and mysql settings and would appreciate it if your answers can be as detailed as possible. Thanks

• retrieve Scrollbar position with javascript

  I know how to do this in flash, but completely lost about regular html. I'm trying to detect the position of the browser scrollbar with Javascript to decide where abouts in the page the current view is. My guess is that I'd have to detect where the thumb on the track is, and then the height of the thumb as a percentage of the total height of the track. Am I over-complicating it, or does Javascript offer an easier solution than that? Any ideas code-wise. Thanks.

I have started the client side in Actionscript, server side in PHP (but now i'm moving to Java) and persistence in MySQL. Which socket server (non commercial) will be preferable, RedDwarf (former DarkStar), Red5, ... ? Those servers are Flash Remoting (AMF) capable ? Those servers manage all the object's game persistence? Then there's no need to create a database ?

I would love to progress to a framework which allows me to pass it onto the client for freedom. Someone suggested using wordpress but I'm not sure how general this can be. A current site I need to build is a fancy kitchen company, price lists, flash gallery (with backend driven pics) and well designed home. How could I bend the the will of wordpress? • Compile Flex application without debug? Optimisation options for flex compiler?

  I have created a simple test application with the following code var i : int; for (i=0; i<3000000; i++){ trace(i); } When I run the application, it's very slow to load, which means the "trace" is running. I check the flash player by right-clicking, the debugger option is not enable. So I wonder if there is an option to put in compiler to exclude the trace. Otherwise, I have to remove manually all the trace in the program. Are there any other options of compiler to optimize the flex application in a maximum way? Thanks

The computer have to randomly put 5 circles in the coordinate system in different positions. After that it must draw lines between them. • My website crashes Firefox. What do I do?

  My website doesn't use Flash or any plugins; just javascript (jQuery, Google Maps). It doesn't crash FF 3.6 all the time, but it usually does after a few minutes. It can happen on lots of different pages. Sometimes it crashes when I'm scrolling the page, sometimes when I'm interacting with a control. Where do I even start debugging? Should I go through the hassle of attaching gdb to Firefox and getting a stack trace, then praying that it sheds some light on the offending code?

• How does one record audio from a Javascript based webapp?

  I'm trying to write a web-app that records WAV files (eg: from the user's microphone). I know Javascript alone can not do this, but I'm interested in the least proprietary method to augment my Javascript with. My targeted browsers are Firefox for PC and Mac (so no ActiveX). Please share your experiences with this. I gather it can be done with Flash (but not as a WAV formated file). I gather it can be done with Java (but not without code-signing). Are these the only options? @dominic-mazzoni I'd like to record the file as a WAV because because the purpose of the webapp will be to assemble a library of good quality short soundbites. I estimate upload will be 50 MB, which is well worth it for the quality. The app will only be used on our intranet.
