  • With the outcome of the Oracle vs Google trial, does that mean Mono is now safe from Microsoft [closed]

    According to the an article on ArsTechnica the judge of the case ruled that APIs are not patent-able. He referred to the structure of modules/methods/classes/functions as being like libraries/books/chapters. To patent an API would be putting a patent on thought itself. It's the internal implementations that really matter. With that in mind, Mono (C# clone for Linux/Mac) has always been viewed tentatively because, even though C# and the CLI are ECMA standards, Microsoft holds a patent on the technology. Microsoft holds a covenant not to sue open source developers based on their patents but has maintained the ability to pull the plug on the Mono development team if they felt the project was a threat. With the recent ruling, is Mono finally out of the woods. A firm precedent has been established that patents can't be applied to APIs. From what I understand, none of the Mono implementation is copied verbatim, only the API structure and functionality. It's a topic I have been personally interested in for years now as I have spent a lot of time developing cross-platform C# libraries in MonoDevelop. I acknowledge that this is a controversial topic, if you have opinions that's what commenting is for. Try to keep the answers factual and based on established sources.

  • Anticipating JavaOne 2012 – Number 17!

    As I write this, JavaOne 2012 (September 30-October 4 in San Francisco, CA) is just over a week away -- the seventeenth JavaOne! I’ll resist the impulse to travel in memory back to the early days of JavaOne. But I will say that JavaOne is a little like your birthday or New Year’s in that it invites reflection, evaluation, and comparison. It’s a time when we take the temperature of Java and assess the world of information technology generally. At JavaOne, insight and information flow amongst Java developers like no other time of the year.This year, the status of Java seems more secure in the eyes of most Java developers who agree that Oracle is doing an acceptable job of stewarding the platform, and while the story is still in progress, few doubt that Oracle is engaging strongly with the Java community and wants to see Java thrive. From my perspective, the biggest news about Java is the growth of some 250 alternative languages for the JVM – from Groovy to Jython to JRuby to Scala to Clojure and on and on – offering both new opportunities and challenges. The JVM has proven itself to be unusually flexible, resulting in an embarrassment of riches in which, more and more, developers are challenged to find ways to optimally mix together several different languages on projects.    To the matter at hand -- I can say with confidence that Oracle is working hard to make each JavaOne better than the last – more interesting, more stimulating, more networking, and more fun!   • Access Control Service V2 and Facebook Integration

    I haven’t been blogging about ACS2 in the past because it was not released and I was kinda busy with other stuff. Needless to say I spent quite some time with ACS2 already (both in customer situations as well as in the classroom and at conferences). ACS2 rocks! It’s IMHO the most interesting and useful (and most unique) part of the whole Azure offering! For my talk at VSLive yesterday, I played a little with the Facebook integration. See Steve’s post on the general setup. One claim that you get back from Facebook is an access token. This token can be used to directly talk to Facebook and query additional properties about the user. Which properties you have access to depends on which authorization your Facebook app requests. You can specify this in the identity provider registration page for Facebook in ACS2. In my example I added access to the home town property of the user. Once you have the access token from ACS you can use e.g. the Facebook SDK from Codeplex (also available via NuGet) to talk to the Facebook API. In my sample I used the WIF ClaimsAuthenticationManager to add the additional home town claim.   • Restricting access to sites

    I'm having some problems configuring my local proxy server so that it would restrict access to certain websites. The proxy server I'm using is Squid; I edited its configuration file found in /etc/squid/squid.conf to include the following: acl wikipedia dstdomain .wikipedia.org http_access deny wikipedia I tried to redirect elinks to use Squid. According to Squid's config file, it listens to port 3128, so in /etc/elinks/elinks.conf I added the following: set protocol.http.proxy.host = "localhost:3128" I also restarted Squid with sudo /etc/init.d/squid restart, but I can still access the banned websites using Elinks. What did I do wrong?

  • IIS Manager won't let me create an application

    Had a thing at work today on a Windows Server 2003 box. In IIS Manager I'm trying to create an application for a directory. So I've brought up the properties dialog and clicked the "Create" button and it did absolutely nothing - no error, the application name box stays greyed out and there's no gear icon on the folder. Also there was no event log message. Has anyone seen this happen or know of a solution?

  • Password manager bug with Firefox 3.6.13

    I'm having trouble with the latest Firefox (3.6.13) password manager. For a website I'm working on, it doesn't fill the password field for any login credential saved. I've looked into the options "Saved passwords" list and they are all there with the correct passwords. I thought at first that the website was blocking this feature in some way, but the password managers in Chrome (on the same Windows 7 machine) and Iceweasel (in a virtual Debian 6 machine) work well. Any idea about what could cause this problem?

Is there a software similar to "windows task manager" that allows you to monitor software that accesses a website? I want to know what website/server is it accessing so I could then block it. And Is there an alternative way to block aside from "host" file? Thanks! FYI: running on Win7

  • Firefox password manager - multiple logins for HTTP authentication

    When you're prompted to login to a site using HTTP authentication (the kind with the pop-up box requesting username/password), Firefox's password manager populates it with only the first stored password for that domain. Is there a way to have Firefox prompt for WHICH account should be used? It is unlike the normal HTML login forms in which you can just press the down arrow to select from multiple login accounts.
