• breaking datetime into constituent parts ASP.NET MVC form

  hi guys, i have searched the web relentlessly for this and have not found anything - which is surprising because i would think it is such a common scenario! Basically, on my model i have a DateTime field which i wish the user to populate through a form. I am using the Html helper to render all other parts of the form (along with validation) So this question is in two parts... Html Helper Firstly, is there any way to use the Html helper to split the DateTime field to be rendered as the three constituent parts of a date: day, month, year (since i do not care about the time part). This could be rendered as text boxes, drop down lists or a combination of both. Model Binding And then when the form is posted, what is the best approach for binding back up to the model? I have seen Scott Hanselmann's solution to this, but it seems a little bloated for what i need - i was hoping for a slightly more elegant solution. Is it recommended to extend DefaultModelBinder and set that as default binder (since all dates would be handled in this way) or write a class that implements IModelBionder and set it as the default binder for the DateTime type? Thanks for all the help in advance :-) i'm loving MVC but it's infuriating me that something so trivial is causing so much headaches!

• IIS: redirect to a webpage if authentication fails

  We have an IIS site (MOSS 2007) that uses Windows Authentication. When a user that has forgotten their password tries to login the servers keeps sending 401 requests. This means on IE the user gets three prompts before IE displays a blank page, on Firefox the user is prompted over and over until they give up. We would like to change the behavior so if a user fails to login three times in a row we send them a redirect to a different site, instead of another 401 Forms authentication is not an option; the site has to remain on windows authentication to allow for SSO capabilities and certain sharepoint functions. Is there any way to tweak the IIS behavior to do this?

• Most standard / Best way to keep the same top menu among different web pages?

  What's the standard way to keep the same menu on top among different web pages without having to duplicate it on each page (I don't mean that it doesn't reload like when using frames and only loading the bottom part; I want the menu to scroll with the page when scrolling down, like this, this, this and pretty much every single web page that exists). I found this answer but the guy can't use Php and I can. Plus, I see several people giving different suggestions, but I assume there is a standard since pretty much every single web page in the whole web have a menu on top that stays the same among multiple pages . I'm just a newbie on web design (I can program Php and Html easily but I have no idea about standards and stuff like that since I'm self-taught guy ;)). What I would normally do is to include the menu with php but I'm not sure if this is the "standard".

• Searching for online database software/cms

  I am searching for a software or CMS that manages and displays large online databases, as some kind of frontend to MySQL or any other database. It should be accessible through the browser, be as secure as possible (offering login). The data I'd like to store would be personal information such as name, adress and birthday - also I'd need to be able to add custom fields as well. Also forms and the possibility to download the data in an excel? table would be great. PHPmyadmin is not an option, it should be similar to a CRM but more closely adapted to managing database tables, searching for entries and filtering data. It should be possible to have many user accounts with different rights, with each of them being able to acces certain parts of the data and entering own data. Is there something out there, that might get close to what I imagine? I appreciate any help!

  I've got a legacy app running a third-party ecommerce system under IIS6. Some spammers recently discovered a bad security vulnerability in one of the store's forms, which are allowing them to send arbitrary emails from our system. Unfortunately, this store "feature" is built into the default.aspx page's code-behind and I have no way to disable it without shutting down the store. How can I filter out URL request with a given querystring parameter? ie, I want to filter out requests to: http://www.mysite.com/store/?id=SendSpam based on the "SendSpam" string.

• How do I manipulate Handler Mappings cleanly in IIS7 using the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespac

  I asked this over on Stack Overflow but maybe it's something an experienced IIS 7 administrator might know more about, so I'm asking here as well. When manipulating Handler Mappings using the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace, is there a way to remove the <remove name="handler name"> tag added at the site level. For example, I have a site which inherits all the handler mappings from the global handler mappings configuration. • Diagnosing Solaris 8 server memory and swap space usage

  Hello everyone. Essentially, my question is related to memory allocation for Solaris virtual machines. I am running a couple of old Sun ONE 6 Java web servers on two Solaris 8 virtual machines. I see that there's a reasonable amount of swap space being used, but I'm not exactly sure if this could indicate a need to add more RAM to these machines. At service peak hours (mornings usually), the response time of the web application these servers host jumps up to at most 11 seconds (somewhat detrimental for a relatively simple web page loading action). Average response time at non peak times is about 5 seconds. What would you be able to infer about the RAM usage for these machines from the ouput below? Is this information reasonably sufficient? Or would I need to run some other commands to rule out server memory starvation? Finally, since there is a Java application at the core of the setup, I've also thought about: 1) Trace the heap's Object allocation to detect potential memory leaks. 2) Do some performance profiling to see if this instead related to networking delays. I mention this since the application talks with a single Oracle Database, but I would doubt this to be the case since they're pretty close from a network segmentation perspective. I appreciate any kind of insight and feedback you could provide. Thanks for your time and help. • Design question for WinForms (C#) app, using Entity Framework

  I am planning on writing a small home budget application for myself, as a learning excercise. I have built my database (SQL Server), and written a small console application to interact with it, and test out scenarios on my database. Once I am happy, my next step would be to start building the application - but I am already wondering what the best/standard design would be. I am palnning on using Entity Framework for handling my database entities... then linq to sql/objects for getting the data, all running under a WinForms (for now) application. My plan (I've never used EF... and most of my development background is Web apps) is to have my database... with Entity Framework in it's own project.. which has the connection to the database. This project would expose methods such as 'GetAccount()', 'GetAccount(int accountId)' etc. I'd then have a service project that references my EF project. And on top of that, my GUI project, which makes the calls to my service project. But I am stuck. Lets say I have a screen that displays a list of Account types (Debit, Credit, Loan...). Once I have selected one, the next drop down shows a list of accounts I have that suite that account type. So, my OnChange event on my DropDown on the account type control will make a call to the serviceLayer project, 'GetAccountTypes()', and I would expect back a List< of Account Types. However, the AccountType object ... what is that? That can't be the AccountType object from my EF project, as my GUI project doesn't have reference to it. Would I have to have some sort of Shared Library, shared between my GUI and my Service project, with a custom built AccountType object? The GUI can then expect back a list of these. So my service layer would have a method: public List<AccountType> GetAccountTypes() That would then make a call to a custom method in my EF project, which would probably be the same as the above method, except, it returns an list of EF.Data.AccountType (The Entity Framework generated Account Type object). The method would then have the linq code to get the data as I want it. Then my service layer will get that object, and transform it unto my custom AccountType object, and return it to the GUI. Does that sound at all like a good plan?

• Mac Safari randomly recreating cookie when I refresh my login screen. Very bizarre

  We have found an issue in our app where Safari on the Mac randomly recreates a login cookie from a logged off session. I have a fiddler archive with this behaviour here. Note that some stuff has been removed from this to make it easier to get, but nothing which sets a cookie or anything has been taken out - only repetitions of requests 3-8. I'll talk you through the running order Request 1: user logs out via call to /logout.aspx - Set-Cookie returned setting cookie expiry date to 1999 Requests 2-8: user refreshes login page sending calls to root or /res/en-US/s.js - no cookie is sent to server or received back, and access is denied. I have cut out a lot of requests of this nature from the log as they are boring Request 9: request for /res/en-US/s.js - Hv3 authentication cookie has mysteriously reappeared! Wat. There was NO set-cookie! WTFF! Request 10+ : now the cookie has reappeared, the site logs the user in AGAIN The cookie, when examined in Safari looks like <dict> <key>Created</key> <real>259603523.26834899</real> <key>Domain</key> <string>.mysite.dev</string> <key>Expires</key> <date>2010-03-24T16:05:22Z</date> <key>HttpOnly</key> <string>TRUE</string> <key>Name</key> <string>.Hv3</string> <key>Path</key> <string>/</string> </dict> One thing to note is that in Safari, the cookie domain is .mysite.dev not mysite.dev (which is the cookie domain specified in web.config) - however, given that access is denied in requests 2-8, it looks like the cookie has expired OK. If you look in the list of cookies in the browser during 2-8, the .Hv3 cookie is not there. Is this our bug or Safari's? What can I do to stop it happening?

• upload form only works in Firefox when uploading ASCII .stl 3D files

  uploadform.html and upload_file.php (below) works fine in Firefox but fails in Chrome, IE, and Safari when uploading ASCII .stl 3D files. Error message is "Invalid file" and problem occurs with multiple computers and multiple .stl files. When I modify the code to support other file types like JPG and PDF it allows those file types in all three web browsers. Also, Firefox only allows the .stl upload if I include application/octet-stream in the mime types section. • JSON, Ajax login and signup form problem, critique

  Here is my problem; indexdeneme2.php has two forms Sign up and Login form, and there is validation.js and login.js which are handling the AJAX and JSON response, there are validate.php and login.php which are my scripts for validating and login. When you sign up, it sends the data to validate.php perfectly and validate.php response with JSON perfectly, validate.js must show the error in #error div. validation.js works perfectly if it is working alone. I use same kind of script for login form. Login.php also works perfectly it responses with JSON and login.js shows the errors are appear in #errorlogin div. But this works when login.js works alone. When I try to work login.js and validate.js together, it is not working. validate.php and login.php works perfectly but login.js and validation.js are not working together. They can't handle the responses coming from php scripts. It is not showing the errors in #errorlogin and #error div. They intercept each other I guess. By the way if you can critique my login.php and validate.php I will be really appreciated.   Using an ajax helper created for use with Jquery I've created a form that posts comments to "/comments/add", and this works as expected on my local wamp server but not on my production server. On my production server I get a '404 error, cannot find /comments/add'. I've spent quite a bit of time searching for a resolution with no luck so far. I've focused on trying to identify a gap but nothing jumps out at me.   I'm currently trying to decide on the best approach to handle hosting a few moderate traffic websites for production e-commerce and online applications. We'd like to move to a dedicated server and are looking at this as the most likely machine: Quad Core Intel Core2Quad Q9550 Processor, 2.83 Ghz X 4, 4 GB Kingston Ram This would run Windows Web Server 2008 R2 x64 and potentially also Sql Server Web 2008 and SmarterMail server. Given that we already pay for a high-end VPS for development, testing, shared version control we'd like to avoid going with two servers for production. We'd like to avoid using shared sql server hosting and have thought of using the development server as the database server as an option too - but potentially a security risk due to use for development by internal and contract users. The questions are: - Do you feel there would be performance degradation by running this on the same machine? - Are there significant issues to be concerned about if we do this? We understand that best practice would be to run separate db and app servers but the volume of traffic is currently not that high and adding another server just for database is currently too costly. - What are others doing out there? Alternatively, would you recommend instead going with two separate VPS servers with 2GB RAM each on Hyper-v which would be about the same cost as the single dedicated server above? Thanks!

They have a lot of resources for processing and handling web requests, and never exceed more than 10% cpu usage. They also have plenty of RAM. The problem is though that they both have RAID 1 160Gb SAS hard disk drives in them that are 75% full, and growing by the day. I didnt think that the amount of disk usage would be so high, but due to the nature of the sites hosted, this has become an issue. The easy fix would be just to upgrade the hard drives to something bigger (probably not of the SAS variety), but I am thinking of keeping the current machines as "processing servers" and buying a central "storage server" with about 12TB of storage. The /home/ partition on each of the 1RU servers would be mounted to a NAS or SAN point on this central storage server. My questions are: - Has anyone got a cPanel setup where they mount /home/ to a NAS or SAN elsewhere? If so, can you provide details as to what you did and how it went :) - Any recommendations on networking? Is gigabit ethernet enough? Is TCP/IP going to be a noticable performance problem? Anyone used a TOE key? - Anyone benchmarked or had any performance issues with SAN over NAS? Any help greatly appreciated. Scott

  i have stumbled upon these GUI tools that could help you manage your linux server through a web interface. ebox, webmin, ispconfig, zivios, ispcp, plesk, cpanel etc. i wonder what the pros and cons are with these solutions. a lot of people is saying that they are not as good as using pure command line (ssh) to manage your server. but i think thats yet another "linux are for advanced users" talk. i agree that a lot of things may only be done with the command line by editing directly in the configuration files. but i don't really want to do that every time and for everything. especially basic configurations these could manage. its like not having phpmyadmin for managing mysql. it would be a pain in the ass right? so if one wants to throw up a web server serving a php site oneself developed and wants all the usual stuff up and running (mysql, phpmyadmin, svn, webdav etc) is these tools the right way to go? and for more advanced features, one just use the terminal like old days. is this a smart way of managing a linux server? and which one would you choose? have you used any of these and could share your thoughts about them?

• Problem in Apache CXF (Simple Frontend): 'Already connected'

  I am using apache CXF for the first time. I am trying to establish a connection based on the CXF simple front end (Configuration notes) technology. I can't really see what I've done wrong, but I am getting a weird error (see below). I have also posted this question to [email protected], but I haven't received a response yet. Perhaps someone here can help. The service bean that is wrapped here is a Spring / JPA service that does not know anything about the web, I want to use simple frontend to publish it as a web service without having to annotate it with Jax-ws etc. (This works in theory). • Web server with static IP from cable provider

  I have a subscription to 5 static IP addresses. I want to run a web server from behind a router. My network config is as follows: Server's local address is 10.1.10.2, has IIS running on it, port 80 and 443 (IIS is not my fault, had to be done) the server's ip address is static, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, gateway is 10.1.10.1, which is the local address of the cable modem / router / gateway thingy. All looks to be in textbook order as far as the LAN goes. I can get to anything on my LAN from any computer on my LAN, whether they have static IP or get it through DHCP from the cable modem/router thingy. however, I have no internet access form any of my LAN computers. I called Comcast tech support and they say they can connect to my modem/router just fine and can actually use it to ping any computer on the internet or any computer on my LAN from the router/modem (i checked, myself, this is in fact the case). However, nothing on my LAN has internet connectivity. I tried pinging the DNS servers, nothing. I tried directly typing in web sites' IP addresses, nothing, so doesn't seem to be a DNS issue. Any Ideas? What malfunction of a router could be causing such weird behavior? nay ideas or educated guesses are very much appreciated.

  I've tried to setup an EasyPHP in local and make it visible from the Web via DynDNS, which I've already successed many times before, but now this just doesn't work, maybe I've forgotten something... *The "server" is a common workstation.   Hello, I am working on a smartphone application that will require a backend web service - but I have absolutely clueless to how much it will cost. Web Service will handle: - login of users - cataloging of our user base - holding minimal profile information for users (the only binary data is a display picture which will be < 20k each) - performing some very minor calculation/algorithm before return results - All the above will be communicated to server from a smartphone (iPhone/BlackBerry/Android) Bandwidth Requirements: - We want to handle up to 10k users throughout the day. - I predict 10k * 50 HTTP requests a day = 500,000 requests a day * 30 = 15 million requests a month Space Requirements: - Data will be in SQL database. - I predict 1MB/user * 10k = 10GB + overhead. In other words - space is not a big issue. Software Requirements: (unless someone knows an alternative) - Windows Server 2008 + IIS - MSFT SQL Server Note: This is 100% new to me, so please hit me with all you got. Do I need Windows Server or are there alternative? Is it better to get multiple cheap servers to distribute load? Will Amazon S3 work for me? How about Windows Azure? Thank you!!
