• Career Choice in JEE, are EJBs standard?

  I have chosen to go the JEE route for a career path but I have been having a hard time determining which core technologies that I need to be most familiar with. I'm at the point I can write web apps without a problem with JSP's and regular servlets using JDBC or some basic Hibernate stuff (I know, HTML, CSS and have used MVC extensively on a number of different platforms). What I'm trying to find out is if there is some standard as far as J2EE technologies go. When I look at most of the Job listings, occasionally you will see someone mention Struts or Spring but rarely do I see any mention of EJB's. So my question is really, are EJB's basically required by most JEE employers? Or are most of them working with POJO's? Is it a mix? I have a hard time figuring out if I should put the majority of my time into Struts, Spring/Hibernate, EJB's, etc. And if I do need to master EJB's what version should I learn? 2.1 or 3.0. 3.0 has some obviously better features but I figure a lot of companies probably chose to write their apps in 2.1 just because it was the standard of the time and now migrating would be a big deal. Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

  I know that I was already posted similar question but I just can't find the answer and figure it out how to solve this problem. I'm trying to customize Jquery Star Rating plugin (link text) but I do not know what to do to show the message based on response of PHP script. Jquery script successfully send rating data to PHP scripts that query the database and based on that echo message of proper or improper rating. What should I add to an existing JS code so I can get echo from PHP and base on that write a message on some DIV beside rating star? Jquery: $('#gal').rating('gl.php?gal_no=<?=$gal_no;?>&id=<?=$id;?>', {maxvalue:10,increment:.5, curvalue: <?=$cur;?>}); Simplified PHP code: $br=mysql_query("SELECT count(gal) as total FROM ...") if ... { echo '0'; } else echo '1'; } Jquery code successfully transmitted data to PHP script and when the PHP done with checking data echo the result ('1' or '0'). How can I get this PHP result back to Jquery and based on them write a message?   I'm having problems with changing a Linux user's password from python. • Places to start for system programmer transitioning to web programming

  So here's where I'm coming from: My background is in C#, C++, VB Script, php, javascript, PowerShell, T-SQL, and VB 6. I have some experience with python, and a brief introduction to Ruby On Rails. At work, we're transitioning to a web based UI in the next year or so, but in asp.net & SilverLight. I would like to, if possible, learn more open source web technologies on the side. And, hopefully, in a year and a half or so, I would like to transition to a more open source web technology position. I found that I do really like python, but I'm open to pretty much anything. And yes, I do know Linux (ubuntu and gentoo), as well. And, here's my question: What technologies, frameworks, IDEs, or systems should I be highly proficient in to become a prime candidate for a position doing web application development using non-Microsoft technologies?

• PHP/MySQL - Working with two databases, one shared and one local to an instance of application

  The situation: Using a off-the-shelf PHP application, I have to add in a new module for extra functionality. Today, it is made known that eventually four different instances of the application are to be deployed, but the data from the new functionality is to be shared among those 4 instances. Each instance should still have their own database for users, content and etc. So the data for the new functionality goes into a 'shared' database. The data for the application (user login, content, uploads) go into a 'local' database To make things more complex, the new module I am writing will fetch data from the local DB and the shared DB at the same time. A re-write of the base application will take too long. I only have control over the new module which I am writing. The ideal solution: Is there a way to encapsulate 2 databases into one name using MySQL? I do not wish to switch DB connections or specifically name the DB to query from inside my SQL statements. The application uses a DB wrapper, so I am able to change it somehow so I can invisibly attempt to read/write to two different DB. What is the best way to handle this problem?

• ASP.NET: How to get same validators control to be both client-side and server-side

  Hello, For the ASP.NET validator controls, I want to use both client-side validation for the user experience and server-side validation to guard against hackers. ASP.NET documentation leads me to believe that if EnableClientScript="True" then there will be no server-side validation if client-side validation is possible for the user agent. To get server-side validation, the documentation says use EnableClientScript="False", which bypasses client-side validation altogether. Am I misunderstanding how the validator controls work? I ask because it seems obvious that many developers would want both client and server side validation together, and I find it hard to believe both together is not possible with one of the standard validation controls. If I am understanding the ASP.NET documentation correctly, then I can find only two options: Use two validator controls exactly the same except for their ID and EnableClientScript properties. Obviously ugly for maintaining two controls almost the same. Write some code behind to check if postback then invoke the Validate method on the validator group. Why write code behind if there a way to be automatic from the control? Is there a way to do so using a single validator control with no code behind? Thanks in advance for your input.

• How to create closed areas (convex polygons) from set of line segments ?

  The following problem is in 2D, so some simplifications can be made when suggesting answers. I need to create closed areas (defined either by line segments or just set of points - convex polygon) from a set of points/line segments. Basically I used Voronoi to generate "roads". Then I changed some of the data. Now I need a way to loop through that data (which is still line segments but doesn't comply with Voronoi anymore) and generate "neigbourhoods" that are bordered with the "roads". I looked at some graph diagrams and shortest path theories, but I could not figure it out. Logically it could be done by starting at left edge from one point, finding the way back to that point using the shortest path with available lines (using only clockwise directions). Then mark this line set down and remove from the data. Then you can repeat the same process and get all the areas like that. I tried to implement that but it did not get me anywhere as I could not figure out a way to write a C++ code that could do that. Problem was with choosing the most counterclockwise line from available lines from a specific point. All angle based math I did gave wrong answers because the way sin/cos are implemented in c++. So to summarize - if you can help me with a totally new approach to the problem its good, if not could you help me find a way to write the part of the code that finds the shortest clockwise path back to the beginning point using the line segment set as paths back. • Best way to display a "High Scores" Results

  First, I would to thank everyone for all the help they provide via this website. It has gotten me to the point of almost being able to release my first iPhone app! Okay, so the last part I have is this: I have a game that allows users to save their high scores. I update a plist file which contains the users Name, Level, and score. Now I want to create a screen that will display the top 20 high scores. What would be the best way to do this? At first I thought possibly creating an HTML file with this info but am not even sure if that is possible. I would need to read the plist file, and then write it out as HTML. Is this possible? Probably on POST I should not render <div> around form in partial view or render the div without id. What else can I do in this situation? Can somebody provide a good advice how to write such helper (Ajax.DivBeginForm)? • How do I retrieve an automated report and save it to a database?

  I've got a web server that will take scripts in Python, PHP or Perl. I don't know much about any of those languages, but of the three, Python seems the least scary. It has a MySql database set up, and I know enough SQL to manage it and write queries for it. I also have a program that I want to add automated error reporting to. Something goes wrong, it sends a bug report to my server. What I don't know how to do is write a Python script that will sit on the web server and, when my program sends in a bug report, do the following: Receive the bug report. Parse it out into sections. Insert it into the database. Have the server send me an email. From what little I understand, this seems like it shouldn't be too difficult if I only knew what I was doing. Could someone point me to a site that explains the basic principles I'd need to create a script like this?

• Python's asyncore to periodically send data using a variable timeout. Is there a better way?

  I wanted to write a server that a client could connect to and receive periodic updates without having to poll. The problem I have experienced with asyncore is that if you do not return true when dispatcher.writable() is called, you have to wait until after the asyncore.loop has timed out (default is 30s). The two ways I have tried to work around this is 1) reduce timeout to a low value or 2) query connections for when they will next update and generate an adequate timeout value. However if you refer to 'Select Law' in 'man 2 select_tut', it states, "You should always try to use select() without a timeout." Is there a better way to do this? Twisted maybe? I wanted to try and avoid extra threads. • Advice on using .Net WorkFlow State Machine. What would you do?

  So I've been tasked at work to write windows services to replace some old legacy VB6 WinForms apps currently running as services, consistently repeating tasks day-to-day. To give some general background, they have there own state machines built in to handle decision basing and not utilizing threading. A lot of the senior developers here thought it would be worth a try to look into WorkFlow to replace the state machines rather than write my own business logic and try threading it programmaticly. So it's WF vs. the "Old College Try" I suppose. My concern is that there aren't many books on the topic, and since it was implemented in .Net I've heard very little about it being used. I brought this up at work and another developer mentioned that it's because Biz Talk never really caught on and it was designed for that. So is it broken? Do you think it will be supported long enough to not worry so much? I don't want an ill-functioning process injected into my services, my new babies at work, and then have WF's keel over. Leaving me with having to replace them with my own code in the event of an emergency; which does not seem like much of a grand scenario to me. Any suggestions, recommendations would be super.

• Some clarification needed about synchronous versus asynchronous asio operations

  As far as I know, the main difference between synchronous and asynchronous operations. I.e. write() or read() vs async_write() and async_read() is that the former, don't return until the operation finish -or error-, and the last ones, returns inmediately. Due the fact that the asynchronous operations are controlled by an io_service.run() that does not finish until the controlled operations has finalized. It seems to me that in sequencial operations as those involved in TCP/IP connections with protocols such as POP3, in which the operaton is a sequence such as: C: <connect> S: Ok. C: User... S: Ok. C: Password S: Ok. C: Command S: answer C: Command S: answer ... C: bye S: <close> The difference between synchronous/asynchronous opperatons does not make much sense. Of course, in both operations there is allways the risk that the program flow stops indefinitely by some circunstance -there the use of timers-, but I would like know some more authorized opinions in this matter. I must admit that the question is rather ill-defined, but I like hear some advices about when use one or other, because I've problems in debugging with MS Visual Studio, asynchronous SSL operations in a POP3 client in wich I'm working now -about some of who surely I would write here soon-, and sometimes think that perhaps is a bad idea use asynchronous in this. Not to say that I'm an absolute newbie with this librarys, that additionally to the difficult with the idioma, and some obscure concepts in the STL, must suffer the brevity of the asio documentation.

  I am trying to write a Spider Solitaire player as an exercise in learning Clojure. I am trying to figure out how to deal the cards. I have created (with the help of stackoverflow), a shuffled sequence of 104 cards from two standard decks. Each card is represented as a (defstruct card :rank :suit :face-up) The tableau for Spider will be represented as follows: (defstruct tableau :stacks :complete) where :stacks is a vector of card vectors, 4 of which contain 5 cards face down and 1 card face up, and 6 of which contain 4 cards face down and 1 card face up, for a total of 54 cards, and :complete is an (initially) empty vector of completed sets of ace-king (represented as, for example, king-hearts, for printing purposes). The remainder of the undealt deck should be saved in a ref (def deck (ref seq)) During the game, a tableau may contain, for example: (struct-map tableau :stacks [[AH 2C KS ...] [6D QH JS ...] ... ] :complete [KC KS]) where "AH" is a card containing {:rank :ace :suit :hearts :face-up false}, etc. How can I write a function to deal the stacks and then save the remainder in the ref?

• Need Help finding an appropriate task asignment algoritm for a collage project involving coordinatin

  Hello. I am a long time lurker here and have found over time many answers regarding jquery and web development topics so I decided to ask a question of my own. This time I have to create a c++ project for collage which should help manage the workflow of a company providing all kinds of services through in the field teams. The ideas I have so far are: client-server application; the server is a dispatcher where all the orders from clients get and the clients are mobile devices (PDAs) each team in the field having one a order from a client is a task. Each task is made up of a series of subtasks. You have a database with estimations on how long a task should take to complete you also know what tasks or subtasks each team on the field can perform based on what kind of specialists made up the team (not going to complicate the problem by adding needed materials, it is considered that if a member of a team can perform a subtask he has the stuff needed) Now knowing these factors, what would a good task assignment algorithm be? The criteria is: how many tasks can a team do, how many tasks they have in the queue, it could also be location, how far away are they from the place but I don't think I can implement that.. It needs to be efficient and also to adapt quickly is the human dispatcher manually assigns a task. Any help or leads would be really appreciated. Also I'm not 100% sure in the idea so if you have another way you would go about creating such an application please share, even if it just a quick outline. I have to write a theoretical part too so even if the ideas are far more complex that what i outlined that would be ok ; I'd write those and implement what I can.

• How do I post a .wav file from CS5 Flash, AS3 to a Java servlet?

  Hi, I am trying to send a byteArray from my .fla to my running tomcat server integrated in Eclipse. From flash I am using the following code: var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(); var header:URLRequestHeader = new URLRequestHeader("audio/wav", "application/octet-stream"); var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://localhost:8080/pdp/Server?wav=" + tableID); request.requestHeaders.push(header); request.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; request.data = file;//wav; loader.load(request); And my java servlet looks as follows: try{ int readBytes = -1; int lengthOfBuffer = request.getContentLength(); InputStream input = request.getInputStream(); byte[] buffer = new byte[lengthOfBuffer]; ByteArrayOutputStream output = new ByteArrayOutputStream(lengthOfBuffer); while((readBytes = input.read(buffer, 0, lengthOfBuffer)) != -1) { output.write(buffer, 0, readBytes); } byte[] finalOutput = output.toByteArray(); input.close(); FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(getServletContext().getRealPath(""+"/temp/"+wav+".wav")); fos.write(finalOutput); fos.close(); When i run the flash .swf file and send the bytearray to the server, I receive following in the server's console window:: (loads of loads of Chinese symbols) May 20, 2010 7:04:57 PM org.apache.tomcat.util.http.Parameters processParameters WARNING: Parameters: Character decoding failed. Parameter '? (loads of loads of Chinese symbols) and then looping this for a long time. It is like I recieve the bytes but not encoding/decoding them correctly. What can I do?

• Zend_Auth and database session SaveHandler

  I have created Zend_Auth adapter implementing Zend_Auth_Adapter_Interface (similar to Pádraic's adapter) and created simple ACL plugin. Everything works fine with default session handler. So far, so good. As a next step I have created custom Session SaveHandler to persist session data in the database. My implementation is very similar to this one from parables-demo. Seems that everything is working fine. Session data are properly saved to the database, session objects are serialized, but authentication does not work when I enable this custom SaveHandler. I have debugged the authentication and all works fine up till the next request, when the authentication data are lost. I suspected, that is has something to do with the fact, that I use $adapter->write($object) instead $adapter->write($string), but the same happens with strings. I'm bootstrapping Zend_Application_Resource_Session in the first Bootstrap method, as early as possible. Does Zend_Auth need any extra configuration to persist data in the database? Why the authentity is being lost?

• Converting an AnsiString to a Unicode String

  I'm converting a D2006 program to D2010. I have a value stored in a single byte per character string in my database and I need to load it into a control that has a LoadFromStream, so my plan was to write the string to a stream and use that with LoadFromStream. But it did not work. In studying the problem, I see an issue that tells me that I don't really understand how conversion from AnsiString to Unicode string works. Here is some code I am puzzling over: oStringStream := TStringStream.Create(sBuffer); sUnicodeStream := oPayGrid.sStream; //explicit conversion to unicode string iSize1 := StringElementSize(oPaygrid.sStream); iSize2 := StringElementSize(sUnicodeStream); oStringStream.WriteString(sUnicodeStream); When I get to the last line, iSize1 does equal 1 and iSize2 does equal 2, so that part is what I understood from my reading. But, on the last line, after I write the string to the stream, and look at the Bytes Property of the string, it shows this (the string starts as '16,159'): (49 {$31}, 54 {$36}, 44 {$2C}, 49 {$31}, 53 {$35}, 57 {$39} ... I was expecting that it might look something like (49 {$31}, 00 {$00}, 54 {$36}, 00 {$00}, 44 {$2C}, 00 {$00}, 49 {$31}, 00 {$00}, 53 {$35}, 00 {$00}, 57 {$39}, 00 {$00} ... I'm not getting the right results out of the LoadFromStream because it is reading from the stream two bytes at a time, but the data it is receiving is not arranged that way. What is it that I should do to give the LoadFromStream a well formed stream of data based on a unicode string? Thank you for your help.

• why does entity framework+mysql provider enumeration returns partial results with no exceptions

  I'm trying to make sense of a situation I have using entity framework on .net 3.5 sp1 + MySQL 6.1.2.0 as the provider. It involves the following code: Response.Write("Products: " + plist.Count() + "<br />"); var total = 0; foreach (var p in plist) { //... some actions total++; //... other actions } Response.Write("Total Products Checked: " + total + "<br />"); Basically the total products is varying on each run, and it isn't matching the full total in plist. Its varies widely, from ~ 1/5th to half. There isn't any control flow code inside the foreach i.e. no break, continue, try/catch, conditions around total++, anything that could affect the count. As confirmation, there are other totals captured inside the loop related to the actions, and those match the lower and higher total runs. I don't find any reason to the above, other than something in entity framework or the mysql provider that causes it to end the foreach when retrieving an item. The body of the foreach can have some good variation in time, as the actions involve file & network access, my best shot at the time is that when the .net code takes beyond certain threshold there is some type of timeout in the underlying framework/provider and instead of causing an exception it is silently reporting no more items for enumeration. Can anyone give some light in the above scenario and/or confirm if the entity framework/mysql provider has the above behavior? Update: I can't reproduce the behavior by using Thread.Sleep in a simple foreach in a test project, not sure where else to look for this weird behavior :(.
