  • How to design desktop app ? (from web app dev)

    I have only worked on web apps for my whole career. I'm starting a new desktop (Adobe AIR) app project but I found myself having difficulties with: stuck with thinking about overall UI design in the traditional page model not sure how to handle the navigation part in the UI not taking advantage of states deciding what should be implemented on client vs server side.   • Sinatra/Rails: Persisting custom class instances during app lifetime

    Can I assert rails/sinatra apps are initialized only once and all requests share the same app instance? or do new requests spawn new app instances? Is it possible to instance custom classes and persist them during app lifetime without using sessions, database storages or third party services? If so, what are the implications from a thread-safeness point of view? I'm trying to figure how to implement a web-based download manager and I'm currently evaluating ruby-based frameworks.

    As a result of a conversation with a colleague today, I've been searching (unsuccessfully) for a large'ish list of what technology stacks are being used popular websites and standalone applications today. We're aware of the big ones like Facebook (php/ ), Twitter (scala/cassandra), Youtube (python/?), Digg (php/cassandra), stackoverflow (.net mvc/sqlserver), but we're looking for a more complete list.   • even small file upload stops activity on apache/rails

    on my rails(2.3.5) app(currently 50-70rpm, maximum response time around 0.7s), uploading even 700k file(using paperclip plugin) locks up the server for web requests for everyone for 2 minutes! (other apps on same server work normally) does anyone have a clue why that might be happening? i am using some mysql transactions which lock the database also if that might be an issue i read http://www.therailsway.com/2009/4/23/uploading-files but it couldn't be locking server for 2 minutes for a small file, could it?!

  • Fastest way to store/retrieve a dictionary - SQL, text file...?

    Hi all, This is a really really super dumb question, so I apologise, but I'd be grateful for some advice. I've got a text file of words and word frequencies. It's very large - theoretically we're talking millions of rows. I just want to retrieve values from the file, and do it as quickly and efficiently as possible (for a web app, in Django). My question is: what is the best way to store and retrieve the values? Should import them into SQL? Or keep the file and use grep? Or put them into a JSON dictionary...? Or some other way? Sorry for the dumb question, would be very grateful for advice!

    We've been looking at automating our server and code deployments. We've already decided on puppet for our server configurations, but are looking for a more "push" style tool to use for code deployments. I'm currently looking at either using capistrano or fabric, but I'm not sure what would be the most mature to use? We deploy a number of different services, none of which are currenlty written in rails or django, so we don't mind about language. What would be the best one to build custom deployment scripts? Or have I missed another tool out there? We are also considering git pushing with hooks for deployment, but feel it will be limited/hacky in what we want to achieve with it. Any thoughts or experience would be great to hear. Cheers

    I display a mail composer view upon a tool bar button click event. At present, I can display the email composer view but when it display it hides the tool bar. I need the toolbar to remain visible. I have seen other apps display the email composer without hiding a toolbar but I can't figure out how they did so. I am new to iphone development.     I have my iPhone setup on my computer at home, with my developer account and provisioning profile. I'm trying to get it setup on my work computer so I can run work apps on it as well. My work has their own dev account. I created an app ID and privisioning profile on my personal account and downloaded it on my work computer but its not letting me compile and run on my iPhone. It says valid provisiong profile not found on executable.

    I do a lot of JRuby on Rails apps, and we have a fair amount of Java .jar dependencies. These become quite annoying in textmate as it really muddies up my lib directory, and I never (obviously) need to actually open these files. Can someone tell me how I might hide .jar files from my file listing in Textmate??

  • Why is it safe to use copy & paste in Flash but not in Javascript?

    I'm trying to use copy'n paste in one of my web apps and have read a few articles/SO questions about it. Most people say that using Flash is the only option since most browsers don't allow access to the system clipboard because of security concerns. I can understand this but I wonder why it is okay for Flash do this, but not for the browser. Or has it got nothing to do with security and it is simply to complicated to implement this for cross-platform browser vendors?
