  • Announcing Hackathon for Social Developers

    Continuing our Social Developer theme, we're excited to announce a week long hackathon put on by the Oracle Social Developer Lab (OSDL). The event starts at JavaOne Oct 2nd and runs through Oct 9th. A winner will be announced and profiled in the following issue of Java Magazine. What's it about?The OSDL is on a mission to make social development easier for the Java community. You may have noticed the biggest social networks have created tools for Ruby, PHP, and other languages, but not as much for Java. We've decided to help fill the gap with a SocialLink social publishing library. You can learn more about it on Java.net. We're also interested in promoting other tools that facilitate social development such as DaliCore Framework.  For our hack, you've got one week to leverage our library and/or DailCore to create a social app. The only rules are it must be a new application, and it must leverage one or both of these tools.  How to submit Create a project that uses either the SocialLink library or the DaliCore Framework to read or publish social data. 1. Upload your hack to a new project on java.net 2. Submit the URL to your java.net project through the project submission form on the Oracle Social Developer Community Facebook page. Only projects that have been submitted to the Oracle Social Developer Community will be reviewed.  In addition to the review process, we'll be adding some projects to the SocialLink project as a "sibling" project.   • Oracle EZConnect in Mediawiki

    Mediawiki supports Oracle and I'm trying to configure it in the installer. The installers says you can use EZConnect...something like: user/pass@//server.example.com/dbname or since the installer has fields elsewhere for user/pass server.example.com/dbname The installer includes a link to the EZConnect docs: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/network.112/e10836/naming.htm. All the examples in that doc include a forward slash. But every combination I've tried results in an error like this: Invalid database TNS "sever.example.com/service_name". Use only ASCII letters (a-z, A-Z), numbers (0-9), underscores (_) and dots (.). I can't find any examples of EZConnect that don't include a forward slash. That error is from Mediawiki, not Oracle. I'm tailing the listener log and there is no connection made - Medaiwiki is returning an error without trying to connect. I'm using php OCI8 with the Oracle instant client. I don't have a tnsnames.ora setup for this client - which is kind of the point of EZConnect. I did write a test php script that connects via oci_connect just fine. Has anyone configured Mediawiki to use Oracle with EZConnect? If so, what did you use in the installer?

  • Java ME JSRs approved by the JCP EC

    The two new Java ME related JSRs were submitted to the JCP earlier in October have been approved by the Executive Committee (EC) to continue development in the JCP program.  These JSRs are now open for Expert Group nominations. All registered JCP.org users can nominate themselves to serve on the JSR Expert Group, but you must become a JCP Member to be approved to serve on a JSR Expert Group. JSR 360, Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) 8, was approved by the EC with 11 yes votes (AT&T was not eligible to vote).  You can also follow this project on their java.net project. JSR 361, Java ME Embedded Profile, was also approved by the EC with 11 yes votes (AT&T was not eligible to vote).  You can also follow this project on their java.net project. 11 yes votes

    I have read from here how to install oracle 10g xe in ubuntu 10.x but not in 11.04 (64 bit). But with 11.04 it does not work anymore because of dependency exceptions. So, how to install oracle 10g xe in ubuntu 11.04? I even found some variant how to fix it from here but in my case it does not work - the same exception take place: oracle-xe-universal:i386 depends on libc6 (= 2.3.2); however: Package libc6:i386 is not installed.

    Prologue In the previous chapter we have see how to create DB records with EF, now we are going to Some Questions about Oracle.   ORACLE One characteristic from SQL Server that differs from Oracle is “Identity”. To all that has not worked with SQL Server, this property, that applies to Integer Columns, lets indicate that there is auto increment columns, by that way it will be filled automatically, without writing it on the insert statement. In EF with SQL Server, the properties whose match with Identity columns, will be filled after invoking SaveChanges method. In Oracle DB, there is no Identity Property, but there is something similar. Sequences Sequences are DB objects, that allow to create auto increment, but there are not related directly to a Table. The syntax is as follows: name, min value, max value and begin value. 1: CREATE SEQUENCE nombre_secuencia 2: INCREMENT BY numero_incremento 3: START WITH numero_por_el_que_empezara 4: MAXVALUE valor_maximo | NOMAXVALUE 5: MINVALUE valor_minimo | NOMINVALUE 6: CYCLE | NOCYCLE 7: ORDER | NOORDER 8:    How to get sequence value? To obtain the next val from the sequence: 1: SELECT nb_secuencia.Nextval 2: From Dual Due to there is no direct way to indicate that a column is related to a sequence, there is several ways to imitate the behavior: Use a Trigger (DB), Use Stored Procedures or Functions(…) or my particularly option. EF model, only, imports Table Objects, Stored Procedures or Functions, but not sequences. By that, I decide to create my own extension Method to invoke Next Val from a sequence: 1: public static class EFSequence 2: { 3: public static int GetNextValue(this ObjectContext contexto, string SequenceName) 4: { 5: string Connection = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["JTorrecillaEntities2"].ConnectionString; 6: Connection=Connection.Substring(Connection.IndexOf(@"connection string=")+19); 7: Connection = Connection.Remove(Connection.Length - 1, 1); 8: using (IDbConnection con = new Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleConnection(Connection)) 9: { 10: using (IDbCommand cmd = con.CreateCommand()) 11: { 12: con.Open(); 13: cmd.CommandText = String.Format("Select {0}.nextval from DUAL", SequenceName); 14: return Convert.ToInt32(cmd.ExecuteScalar()); 15: } 16: } 17:  18: } 19: } This Object Context’s extension method are going to invoke a query with the Sequence indicated by parameter. It takes the connection strings from the App settings, removing the meta data, that was created by VS when generated the EF model. And then, returns the next value from the Sequence. The next value of a Sequence is unique, by that, when some concurrent users are going to create records in the DB using the sequence will not get duplicates. This is my own implementation, I know that it could be several ways to do and better ways. If I find any other way, I promise to post it. To use the example is needed to add a reference to the Oracle (ODP.NET) dll.

    What is in Oracle's sqlplus equivalent of Linux's man or --help ? When I'm in sqlplus and type help index, I get some commands displayed, but there is no way to get specific sql syntax. For example if I type 'help select' I get: SP2-0172 No HELP matching this tiopic was found. Of course, I would like to get all available options for select command. How can I get info or sql syntax while I'm at sql prompt ? Thanks
