  • List of IP addresses/hostnames from local network in Python

    - by joshhunt
    How can I get a list of the IP addresses or host names from a local network easily in Python? It would be best if it was multi-platform, but it needs to work on Mac OS X first, then others follow. Edit: By local I mean all active addresses within a local network, such as 192.168.xxx.xxx. So, if the IP address of my computer (within the local network) is 192.168.1.1, and I have three other connected computers, I would want it to return the IP addresses 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, 192.168.1.4, and possibly their hostnames.

  • GAE and Socket Data

    - by Vinod
    I have a field device which keeps on sending data over to any designated port using sockets. I am planning to use GAE for server-side infrastructure. I read GAE does not support sockets. But i can configure the device to send the data over port 80. so we wrote a genericservlet to capture this data on GAE. But it is not obtaining any values from the client. any suggestions to fix this issue?

  • Other than UDP Broadcast or Multicast, what other methods can I use on a WiFI network to discover co

    - by Gubatron
    I've implemented a simple ping/pong protocol to discover other computers connected to the same WiFI router. This works fine on many routers, but it seems some public routers have UDP traffic blocked or disabled. What other options do I have to discover the computers connected to the router? I was thinking of brute forcing TCP attempts (trying to open connections to all possible IPs on my subnetwork) but this would be very costly and I would have to cycle several times and still not find every machine that's recently connected to the network.

  • How to collect user opinions about software

    - by alga
    I have written a small .net Windows Forms application. And now I decided to get opinions or comments from users. User will just write something in a input form and click a send button. I want to use the most easiest way. I don't want to host any webservices or another applications for gathering the information. Also I don't have a database. Nothing. I just want to know what people think about the application. How would you do it?

  • What to do when ServerSocket throws IOException and keeping server running

    - by s5804
    Basically I want to create a rock solid server. while (keepRunning.get()) { try { Socket clientSocket = serverSocket.accept(); ... spawn a new thread to handle the client ... } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); // NOW WHAT? } } In the IOException block, what to do? Is the Server socket at fault so it need to be recreated? For example wait a few seconds and then serverSocket = ServerSocketFactory.getDefault().createServerSocket(MY_PORT); However if the server socket is still OK, then it is a pity to close it and kill all previously accepted connections that are still communicating. EDIT: After some answers, here my attempt to deal with the IOException. Would the implementation be guaranteeing keeping the server up and only re-create server socket when only necessary? while (keepRunning.get()) { try { Socket clientSocket = serverSocket.accept(); ... spawn a new thread to handle the client ... bindExceptionCounter = 0; } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); recreateServerSocket(); } } private void recreateServerSocket() { while (keepRunning) { try { logger.info("Try to re-create Server Socket"); ServerSocket socket = ServerSocketFactory.getDefault().createServerSocket(RateTableServer.RATE_EVENT_SERVER_PORT); // No exception thrown, then use the new socket. serverSocket = socket; break; } catch (BindException e) { logger.info("BindException indicates that the server socket is still good.", e); bindExceptionCounter++; if (bindExceptionCounter < 5) { break; } } catch (IOException e) { logger.warn("Problem to re-create Server Socket", e); e.printStackTrace(); try { Thread.sleep(30000); } catch (InterruptedException ie) { logger.warn(ie); } } } }

  • How do I get the available wifi APs and their signal strength in .net?

    - by LDomagala
    Is there any way to access all WiFi access points and their respective RSSI values using .NET? It would be really nice if I could do it without using unmanaged code or even better if it worked in mono as well as .NET. If it is possible i would appriciate a code sample. Thanks Here are a few similiar stackoverflow questions i found: -Get SSID of the wireless network I am connected to with C# .Net on Windows Vista -Managing wireless network connection in C# -Get BSSID (MAC address) of wireless access point from C#

  • Which programming language to use for serious project?

    - by alex
    Hi! Which programming language to use for serious web project (price catalogue)? After some time of studying web PHP frameworks i got that: Codeigniter: good, but when i read about authorization (that 20% users can login correctly without party solutions), i am disappointed. Zend Framework: more serious, but raises questions about speed and i found only few examples. PHP: long time to understand PHP frameworks functionality

  • error building the first program from Hillegass's book: Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X

    - by lampShade
    I'm trying to build the first program in Aaron Hillegass's book: Cocoa(R) Programming for Mac(R) OS X (3rd Edition). The problem I'm having is that I can't my Interface object to "spawn" for lack of a better term unless I build and run the program. Herein lies the problem. While the program is running I can't connect the code to the interface. I'm coding in objective - c on a mac

  • High-level languages for out-of-the-box GUI desktop application programming

    - by Omeoe
    After I discontinued programming in C++ while entering into web authoring I was spoilt by PHP's high level constructs like hash tables or its dynamic, weak typing. I remembered the angst of C/C++ pointers and the maze of low-level Win32 API handles and message loops and that prevented me from utilizing environments like Code::Blocks for desktop applications. I am also not very fond of bulky, statically-typed C#/.NET environment. Any other ideas?

  • Python and C++ Sockets converting packet data

    - by yeus
    First of all, to clarify my goal: There exist two programs written in C in our laboratory. I am working on a Proxy Server (bidirectional) for them (which will also mainpulate the data). And I want to write that proxy server in Python. It is important to know that I know close to nothing about these two programs, I only know the definition file of the packets. Now: assuming a packet definition in one of the C++ programs reads like this: unsigned char Packet[0x32]; // Packet[Length] int z=0; Packet[0]=0x00; // Spare Packet[1]=0x32; // Length Packet[2]=0x01; // Source Packet[3]=0x02; // Destination Packet[4]=0x01; // ID Packet[5]=0x00; // Spare for(z=0;z<=24;z+=8) { Packet[9-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof0_rot*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[13-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof0_speed*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[17-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof1_rot*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[21-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof1_speed*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[25-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof2_rot*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[29-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof2_speed*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[33-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof3_rot*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[37-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof3_speed*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[41-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof4_rot*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[45-z/8]=((int)(720000+armcontrolpacket->dof4_speed*1000)/(int)pow((double)2,(double)z)); Packet[49-z/8]=((int)armcontrolpacket->timestamp/(int)pow(2.0,(double)z)); } if(SendPacket(sock,(char*)&Packet,sizeof(Packet))) return 1; return 0; What would be the easiest way to receive that data, convert it into a readable python format, manipulate them and send them forward to the receiver?

    Using either XNA OR just the usual c# win forms application, which would be the best way to create the feature that enables text messages to be sent from me to my friend over the internet? I don't know if this matters or not, but I now have 3 Mobile Broadband internet... so it's like... Wireless internet, does that matter?

  • twisted reactor stops too early

    - by pygabriel
    I'm doing a batch script to connect to a tcp server and then exiting. My problem is that I can't stop the reactor, for example: cmd = raw_input("Command: ") # custom factory, the protocol just send a line reactor.connectTCP(HOST,PORT, CommandClientFactory(cmd) d = defer.Deferred() d.addCallback(lambda x: reactor.stop()) reactor.callWhenRunning(d.callback,None) reactor.run() In this code the reactor stops before that the tcp connection is done and the cmd is passed. How can I stop the reactor after that all the operation are finished?

  • Generate RTT values

    - by Jean Gauthier
    Hi all, I'm writing a Java applet where I should be able to simulate a connection between two hosts. Hence I have to generate packet round-trip times at random. These RTTs can go from ~0 to infinity, but are typically oscillating around some average value (i.e. an extremely large or small value is very improbable but possible). I was wondering if anyone had an idea of how I could do this? Thanks in advance

  • getnameinfo specifies socklen_t

    - by bobby
    The 2nd arg for the getnameinfo prototype asks for a socklen_t type but sizeof uses size_t. So how can I get socklen_t ? Prototype: int getnameinfo(const struct sockaddr *restrict sa, socklen_t salen, char *restrict node, socklen_t nodelen, char *restrict service, socklen_t servicelen, int flags); Example: struct sockaddr_in SIN; memset(&SIN, 0, sizeof(SIN)); // This should also be socklen_t ? SIN.sin_family = AF_INET; SIN.sin_addr.s_addr = inet_addr(IP); SIN.sin_port = 0; getnameinfo((struct sockaddr *)&SIN, sizeof(SIN) /* socklen_t */, BUFFER, NI_MAXHOST, NULL, 0, 0);

  • Buffer management for socket application best practice

    - by Poni
    Having a Windows IOCP app............ I understand that for async i/o operation (on network) the buffer must remain valid for the duration of the send/read operation. So for each connection I have one buffer for the reading. For sending I use buffers to which I copy the data to be sent. When the sending operation completes I release the buffer so it can be reused. So far it's nice and not of a big issue. What remains unclear is how do you guys do this? Another thing is that even when having things this way, I mean multi-buffers, the receiver side might be flooded (talking from experience) with data. Even setting SO_RCVBUF to 25MB didn't help in my testings. So what should I do? Have a to-be-sent queue?

  • Reading data from a socket

    - by Bobby
    I am having issues reading data from a socket. Supposedly, there is a server socket that is waiting for clients to connect. When I write a client to connect() to the server socket/port, it appears that I am connected. But when I try to read() data that the server is supposedly writing on the socket, the read() function hangs until the server app is stopped. Why would a read() call ever hang if the socket is connected? I believe that I am not ever really connected to the socket/port but I can't prove it, b/c the connect() call did not return an error. The read() call is not returning an error either, it is just never returning at all.

  • C programming doubt!!!

    - by aks
    Hi, I am having a programming doubt? Please have a look at the below mentioned code snippet and tell me the difference? int main() { struct sockaddr_in serv_addr, cli_addr; /* Initialize socket structure */ bzero((char *) &serv_addr, sizeof(serv_addr)); } Now, what if i do something similar without typecasting (char *), then also i feel it will do the same thing? Can someone clarify? /* Initialize socket structure */ bzero( &serv_addr, sizeof(serv_addr));

  • Where are the new languages?

    - by Johnson William
    Most now mainstream/popular (interpreted|scripting) programming languages were created around the 1990's. (Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP just to name a few). How many people knew about those languages around 1-2 years after they had been first published? Are there languages with potential of becoming as important as e.g.: Python or PHP being developed at the moment? I mean ... is there someone even seriously trying to create a new one? If the first version of a programming language is published and nearly nobody knows about it, as it was with all the languages I've mentioned above, where could I find out? Is there some sort of "list" or "network" dealing just with non-language-specific news? Is the area where Perl, Python, Ruby and PHP fit in already fully covered? Do you know of concrete examples of new programming languages being seriously developed or rising at the moment? (Except Google's go!)

  • An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

    - by peter
    I am working with a commercial application which is throwing a SocketException with the message, An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host This happens with a socket connection between client and server. The connection is alive and well, and heaps of data is being transferred, but it then becomes disconnected out of nowhere. Has anybody seen this before? What could the causes be? I can kind of guess a few causes, but also is there any way to add more into this code to work out what the cause could be? Any comments / ideas are welcome. Thanks.
