  • How do you implement file drag-and-drop upload in Google Chrome?

    - by Chris R
I've found several tutorials online about implementing file drag/drop with Firefox 3.6 (they involve using a FileReader object to get the file binary data). However, I cannot create a FileReader object in Chrome on Windows or Mac. Does anyone know what the API is to read and manipulate data from a drag-and-dropped file in Chrome? If I can get the binary data of the file, I already have the rest of the code to perform the upload. Note: I've also tried using the getAsBinary() function call on the file object of the drag event (event.dataTransfer.file) but I believe that is a Mozilla-specific function and not implemented in Chrome. Also, I'm not interested in a solution using google gears or one that requires a user to select files from a dialog. I'm specifically trying to implement a drag-and-drop file upload.

  • css absolute position won't work with margin-left:auto margin-right: auto

    - by user1118019
Say you have the following css applied to a div tag .divtagABS { position: absolute; margin-left: auto; margin-right:auto; } the margin-left and margin-right does not take effect but if you have relative, it works fine i.e. ,divtagREL { position: relative; margin-left: auto; margin-right:auto; } why is that? i just want to center an element can someone explain why setting margins to auto in absolute position does not work?

Thanx in advance!

  • Prototype hide/show

    - by Kyle Sevenoaks
Hi, I am a Javascript/jQuery/Prototype newcomer and I have a page that has a Prototype function to get info from a database and put it into some input fields. This was made before I came to work on this site and now I've been asked to add a hide/show div function. I tried it in jQuery and there were clashes with the two frameworks, (as found in my previous question). My question now is, how would I go about building a show/hide function in Prototype? I think it will be easier to do it this way than to re-build the info grabber. The page I want to add this to is here. (the green "ny kunde" button should show the div directly below it newCustomer. Thanks. :)

  • Native (non-jqueryui) way to set prompt() input field inline.

    - by Anthony
I might just be using the wrong keywords on Google, but what I have in mind is: -------------------------------- | What is your mailbox? | | | | [ ]@mail.example.org | | | | [OK] [Cancel] | -------------------------------- The idea being that the input field is followed right behind by the mail server name, to help avoid instances where: If I don't make it follow right behind, the user puts in the whole thing, If I default it to "[email protected]" they delete the server name. In either case, it's not too big a deal, as I will know that if the returned value does have the server, to remove it and if doesn't, I know what server it belongs to, but I think this visual aid will be a better user experience and lower the amount of validation worries I tend to get.

  • Why not use javascript handlers on the body element?

    - by disown
As an answer to the question of 'How do you automatically set the focus to a textbox when a web page loads?', Espo suggests using <body onLoad="document.getElementById('<id>').focus();"> Ben Scheirman replies (without further explanation): Any javascript book will tell you not to put handlers on the body element like that Why would this be considered bad practice? In Espos answer, an 'override' problem is illustrated. Is this the only reason, or are there any other problems? Compatibility issues?

  • Absolute positioned div jumps outside containing div in IE7

    - by user367232
Having trouble with a couple of display issues in IE7. Firstly, my large text headers display too far up in Internet Explorer (all pages) Secondly, my descriptions on my Portfolio pages end up outside their containing divs. Works great on FF/Chrome/Opera/Safari though! You'll see what I mean: http://bit.ly/a3hUD4 (I've used bitly so my dumb questions don't show up when someone googles my website). I've googled extensively. Not sure if problem number 2 is a overflow issue, or a absolute positioning bug in IE. Here's the CSS for the centre div with the jumbo-text titles .column1 { padding: 103px 10px 10px 10px; float: left; width: 500px; margin: 0; } And for the description div on the portfolio page .porttxtbox { text-align: right; background-image: url(images/porttxtBG.png); bottom: 0; position: absolute; width: 100%; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; } And it's container div .portimgbox { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; height: 250px; width: 480px; position: relative; border: 5px solid #EAEAEA; Thanks in advance!

    - by Lehan Coetzee
I'm trying to open a text file in my browser, when doing it from my local machine it works perfectly but when I upload my files to my web server the link to the text file no longer works and I get a broken link error from the browser. Here is my code for opening the txt file: <div style="width: 100%; background-color: #CCC;text-align: center;"> <a href="code.txt" onclick="window.open(this.href,this.target,'height=300, width=500');return false;">Code</a> </div>

  • IFrame causing javascript code to not execute

    - by Claudio Redi
Does anyone know why this code doesn't work. This means, the alert is NOT fired <iframe/> <script type="text/javascript">alert('hello');</script> While this code with the alert BEFORE the Iframe works perfeclty. This means the alert is fired <script type="text/javascript">alert('hello');</script> <iframe/> Seems that no javascript placed after the iframe is executed, I don't find any logic to this.

  • Calculate order price by date selection value

    - by albatross
    Alright, I know there's a simple way to do this, but it's been years since I've done much javascript My client has an online order form for event registration (developed by previous web dev.). Currently the order total is just a hidden field: <INPUT value=78.00 type=hidden name=amount /> But I need the total to calculate based on what date they choose: <SELECT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff99" name=altDate1> <OPTION value=04/09> Friday, April 9 </OPTION> <OPTION value=04/14> Wednesday, April 14 </OPTION> <OPTION value=04/16> Friday, April 16 </OPTION> <OPTION value=04/19> Monday, April 19 </OPTION> <OPTION value=04/29> Thursday, April 29 </OPTION> </SELECT> This is the javascript that process the form: <SCRIPT language=Javascript> function PaymentButtonClick() { document.addform.Product_Name.value = document.Information.StudentLastName.value + ","+ document.Information.StudentFirstName.value+","+ document.Information.StudentID.value+","+ document.Information.altDate1.name+","+","+ document.Information.Guests.value+ "," + document.Information.StudentType.value; document.addform.Product_Code.value = document.Information.StudentID.value; if ((document.Information.UCheck.checked==true) && (document.Information.altDate1.value != "") && (document.Information.altDate1.value != "x")) { if (document.Information.StudentLastName.value != "" || document.Information.StudentFirstName.value != "" || document.Information.StudentID.value != "" ) { document.addform.submit(); } else { alert("Please enter missing information"); } } } </SCRIPT>

  • validation in javascript - remove the error msg on focus

    - by fusion
    i'm not very well-versed with javascript, so please bear with me. i've a form in which i validate the controls with javascript. the error is displayed when the fields are empty via a div, but when i focus and type something in the textbox, the div should go away. but the error div doesn't and even if i type something valid, it still displays the div. i'd like to know where am i going wrong with this script: <script type="text/javascript"> var err = document.getElementById("errmsg"); function checkInput(inPut) { if (inPut.getValue() == "") { err.setStyle('display', 'block'); err.setTextValue("Field cannot be empty!"); inPut.focus(); return false; } else { return true; } } function checkTextBox(textBox) { if (textBox.getValue() == "") { err.setStyle('display', 'block'); err.setTextValue("Field cannot be empty!"); textBox.focus(); return false; } else if (!checkValidity(textBox.getValue())) { err.setStyle('display', 'block'); err.setTextValue("Please enter a valid email address!"); textBox.focus(); return false; } else { return true; } } . . . <div id="errmsg" class="invalid" style="display:none;"></div> <br /> . . . <input type="text" tabindex="1" name="name" id="name" class="input_contact" onblur="checkInput(this);"/> <br /> . . . <input type="text" tabindex="2" name="email" id="email" class="input_contact" onblur="checkTextBox(this);"/> <br /> it's a form in facebook app but while the fbjs works, i assume there's a problem with my basic javascript.

  • Stop applet execution on load, pause/resume using javascript?

    - by Zane
I'm making something of a java applet gallery for my website (processing applets, if you're interested) and I'd like to keep the applets from running when the sit first loads. Then, when the appropriate button is clicked, a piece of javascript would tell the applet to continue execution until another button is pressed to stop it. I know that I can use appletName.start() and appletName.stop(), but it doesn't seem to work on load, at least not well. I'm using element.getElementsById( "applet" ) to get the applets to use the start and stop methods on. It slows Firefox to a crawl for some reason.

  • Colgroup in ffox/chrome

    - by Razor
I am testing the <colgroup> tag on a 5 columns table, with a style attribute. I can't seem to make it work on firefox 3.6/chrome 5 tho, and this is when I started searching for the reference on w3c. It seemed like my code was perfectly fine, but looking at the w3c editor I noticed not even that was working. Only IE8 seems to work correctly, opera 10.51 ignores the style tag but applies the align tag correctly, while ffox and chrome seems to ignore colgroup completely. So what am I (and w3c) doing wrong? Was colgroup deprecated and I missed it?

  • Current state of client-side XSLT

    - by Casey
Last I heard, Blizzard was one of the few companies to put client-side XSLT into practice (2008). Is this still the case in 2011, or are more people now exploring this technique in production?  It seems that modern browsers (IE9, FF4, Chrome) and client processing power are primed to exploit this standard for tangible savings in server CPU power and bandwidth on large scale properties. Am I missing something? The negative aspects I'm aware of include * additional rendering time * additional assets required on uncached page load * additional layer of complexity * noticably less developer experience than server-side template techniques The benefits I perceive include * distributed template composition (offloaded on the client) * caching of common template fragments offloaded on the client * logical separation of document structure and data * well-documented web standard supported by all modern browsers Finally, although I know it's impossible to predict the future, I am curious to know opinions on whether or not client-side XSLT's day will come. With interest in HTML5 driving users to upgrade their browsers and developers to explore new techniques, I would say yes. How about you? Thanks in advance, Casey

  • Boo: Explicitly specifying the type of a hash

    - by Kiv
I am new to Boo, and trying to figure out how to declare the type of a hash. When I do: myHash = {} myHash[key] = value (later) myHash[key].method() the compiler complains that "method is not a member of object". I gather that it doesn't know what type the value in the hash is. Is there any way I can declare to the compiler what type the keys and values of the hash are so that it won't complain?

  • best way to switch between secure and unsecure connection without bugging the user

    - by Brian Lang
The problem I am trying to tackle is simple. I have two pages - the first is a registration page, I take in a few fields from the user, once they submit it takes them to another page that processes the data, stores it to a database, and if successful, gives a confirmation message. Here is my issue - the data from the user is sensitive - as in, I'm using an https connection to ensure no eavesdropping. After that is sent to the database, I'd like on the confirmation page to do some nifty things like Google Maps navigation (this is for a time reservation application). The problem is by using the Google Maps api, I'd be linking to items through a unsecure source, which in turn prompts the user with a nasty warning message. I've browsed around, Google has an alternative to enterprise clients, but it costs $10,000 a year. What I am hoping is to find a workaround - use a secure connection to take in the data, and after it is processed, bring them to a page that isn't secure and allows me to utilize the Google Maps API. If any of you have a Netflix account you can see exactly what I would like to do when you sign-in, it is a secure page, which then takes you to your account / queue, on an unsecure page. Any suggestions? Thanks!
