    I am looking at this piece of code. This constructor delegates to the native method "System.arraycopy" Is it Thread safe? And by that I mean can it ever throw a ConcurrentModificationException? public Collection<Object> getConnections(Collection<Object> someCollection) { return new ArrayList<Object>(someCollection); } Does it make any difference if the collection being copied is ThreadSafe eg a CopyOnWriteArrayList? public Collection<Object> getConnections(CopyOnWriteArrayList<Object> someCollection) { return new ArrayList<Object>(someCollection); }

    Hi all, I want to code two JList (categories and items). When I click one category it should select all the items for that category and when I click on one item it should select its categories. So both JList will have a ListSelectionListener listening at each other and changing the selection. Should I fear about some a of "loop" ?     hi, I have the following values: int a=1; int b=0; int c=2; int d=2; int e=1; How do i concatenate these values so that i end up with a String that is 10221; please note that multiplying a by 10000, b by 1000.....and e by 1 will not working since b=0 and therefore i will lose it when i add the values up.     Hi guys, I'm writing a parser for some LISP files. I'm trying to get rid of leading whitespace in a string. The string contents are along the lines of: :FUNCTION (LAMBDA (DELTA PLASMA-IN-0) (IF (OR (>= #61=(+ (* 1 DELTA) PLASMA-IN-0) 100) (<= #61# 0)) PLASMA-IN-0 #61#)) The tabs are all printed as 4 spaces in the file, so I want to get rid of these leading tabs. I tried to do this: string.replaceAll("\\s{4}", " ") - but it had no effect at all on the string. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Is it because it is a multi-line string? Thanks

    I've been converting some code from java to scala lately trying to teach myself the language. Suppose we have this scala class: class Person() { var name:String = "joebob" } Now I want to access it from java so I can't use dot-notation like I would if I was in scala. So I can get my var's contents by issuing: person = Person.new(); System.out.println(person.name()); and set it via: person = Person.new(); person.name_$eq("sallysue"); System.out.println(person.name()); This holds true cause our Person Class looks like this in javap: Compiled from "Person.scala" public class Person extends java.lang.Object implements scala.ScalaObject{ public Person(); public void name_$eq(java.lang.String); public java.lang.String name(); public int $tag() throws java.rmi.RemoteException; } Yes, I could write my own getters/setters but I hate filling classes up with that and it doesn't make a ton of sense considering I already have them -- I just want to alias the _$eq method better. (This actually gets worse when you are dealing with stuff like antlr because then you have to escape it and it ends up looking like person.name_\$eq("newname"); Note: I'd much rather have to put up with this rather than fill my classes with more setter methods. So what would you do in this situation?

  • When can Java produce a NaN (with specific code question)

    I'm a bit perplexed by some code I'm currently writing. I am trying to preform a specific gradient descent (main loop included below) and depending on the initial conditions I will alternatively get good looking results (perhaps 20% of the time) or everything becomes NaN (the other 80% of the time). However it seems to me that none of the operations in my code could produce NaN's when given honest numbers! My main loop is: // calculate errors delta = m1 + m2 - M; eta = f1 + f2 - F; for (int i = 0; i < numChildren; i++) { epsilon[i] = p[i]*m1+(1-p[i])*m2+q[i]*f1+(1-q[i])*f2-C[i]; } // use errors in gradient descent // set aside differences for the p's and q's float mDiff = m1 - m2; float fDiff = f1 - f2; // first update m's and f's m1 -= rate*delta; m2 -= rate*delta; f1 -= rate*eta; f2 -= rate*eta; for (int i = 0; i < numChildren; i++) { m1 -= rate*epsilon[i]*p[i]; m2 -= rate*epsilon[i]*(1-p[i]); f1 -= rate*epsilon[i]*q[i]; f2 -= rate*epsilon[i]*(1-q[i]); } // now update the p's and q's for (int i = 0; i < numChildren; i++) { p[i] -= rate*epsilon[i]*mDiff; q[i] -= rate*epsilon[i]*fDiff; } This behavior can be seen when we have rate = 0.01; M = 30; F = 30; C = {15, 25, 35, 45}; with the p[i] and q[i] chosen randomly uniformly between 0 and 1, m1 and m2 chosen randomly uniformly to add to M, and f1 and f2 chosen randomly uniformly to add up to F. Does anyone see anything that could create these NaN's?

    Hi everybody! I've been working with swing for the last 2 years, but i'm still not satisfy with my own work. The apps are "fast" enough, but the development isn't enough "clean". Can you recommend me any real world project, book, or something similar that shows me how a real world swing app work. May be a framework, something structured, etc. For example, i'm thinking i may code a "window manager" that has all the window of the app in an unified resource, may be cached, etc. I think all those good ideas must be implemented already.   • Statically checking a Java app for link errors

    I have a scenario where I have code written against version 1 of a library but I want to ship version 2 of the library instead. The code has shipped and is therefore not changeable. I'm concerned that it might try to access classes or members of the library that existed in v1 but have been removed in v2. I figured it would be possible to write a tool to do a simple check to see if the code will link against the newer version of the library. I appreciate that the code may still be very broken even if the code links. I am thinking about this from the other side - if the code won't link then I can be sure there is a problem. As far as I can see, I need to run through the bytecode checking for references, method calls and field accesses to library classes then use reflection to check whether the class/member exists. I have three-fold question: (1) Does such a tool exist already? (2) I have a niggling feeling it is much more complicated that I imagine and that I have missed something major - is that the case? (3) Do you know of a handy library that would allow me to inspect the bytecode such that I can find the method calls, references etc.? Thanks!

  • Java Sound Clip Looping Frame Position

    Hi, I have a little problem with a loopting clip: If you have a soundfile e.g. 20000 samples long, the frame position will not reset after looping, so I get values that are "out of bounds" of the original soundfile. As I want to draw a position marker on my waveform, I'm a bit confused how to achive. At this time I just get myClip.getLongFramePosition() but this does not work as described above. Does anyone have an idea how to fix that? Is there a possibility to count how often a clip was looped before? Regards

  • Find files in a folder using Java

    Hello, I'm new here so be kind to my stupidity :) What I need to do if Search a folder say C:\example I then need to go through each file and check to see if it matches a few start characters so if files start temp****.txt tempONE.txt tempTWO.txt So if the file starts with temp and has an extension .txt I would like to then put that file name into a File file = new File("C:/example/temp***.txt); so I can then read in the file, the loop then needs to move onto the next file to check to see if it meets as above.   • What are the alternatives for Java authentication?

    Preferably something that integrates well with a Flex front end. Yes the Spring Security guys say this is possible, but all examples seem to use legacy jsp tag libraries making them half useless as examples. I don't want to spend a month setting up and learning how to use a security tool. I would like a tool which supports using annotations (@RolesAllowed etc), MINIMAL XML, and 'remember-me' features (not cookie based). Apache Shiro seems to support Flex/Silverlight/Swing as well but I'd like to know if there are any other alternatives that are NOT container specific.
