  • Performance - User defined query / filter to search data

    What is the best way to design a system where users can create their own criterias to search data ? By "design" i mean, data storage, data access layer and search structure. We will actually refactor an existing application which is written in C# and ASP .NET and we don't want to change the infrastructure. Our main issue is performance and we use MSSQL and DevExpress to build queries. Some queries run in 4-5 minutes and all the columns included in the queries have indexes. When i check queries, i see that DevExpress builds too many "exists" clauses and i'm not happy with that because i have doubts that some of these queries skip some indexes. What may be the alternatives to DevExpress? NHibernate or Entity Framework? Can we build dynamic criteria system and store these to database in both of them ? And also do we need any alternative storage like a lucene index or OLAP database?

    I've been convinced that I should learn another language (primarily PHP/Javascript oriented) and decided on Java. I learned my basics of PHP, years ago, from www.w3schools.com and Javascript from another similar site (since taken down) that had a series of tutorials that took you from nothing to something. Is there a similar site for Java? Is there a recommended IDE (Eclipse?) and site to learn?

  • What would you suggest as a high school first language?

    Edit by OA: After reading some answers I'll just update the question a little. At first I put it a little bluntly, but some of those gave me some good arguments which have to be taken into consideration while making a stand on this one. (these are mostly picked up from comments and answers below). A few things to take into account: to many pupils this is a first programming language - at this stage most of them have trouble grasping a difference between data types, variable passing, ... and whatnot, less alone pointers and similar 'low level stuff' :) they will all have to pass this to get into next grade (well, big majority of them anyway) not all of them have computers at home, not all of them are willing to learn this, less alone interested in - so the concepts have to be taught on a finite time scale in school hours (as well as practice on computers) free literature is a bonus - the teacher will make some scripts and handaways, but still ... I wouldn't like to bear the parents with the burden of buying expensive literature (also, english is not a native language here ... and although they are all learning it, their ability to read it fluently is somewhat questionable) somebody gave an argument - "a language which does not get in the way of ideas" - good one accessibility on different platforms in not expecially important at this point - although most of the suggested ones are available on win as well as linux - not many macs in this part of europe (their prices are sky high for anything but specialised usage) I will check what are the licencing issues on ms express editions about using it massively in high schools for purposes like this - if someone has any info about this, please, do not be shy with it :) A friend of mine, informatics teacher - in EU it comes as something as junior cs teacher, in a local high school asked me what I thought about what should be the first language pupils should be taught? It is a technical school (a little more oriented towards mathematics than the gymnasium, but not computer oriented totally). So I'm asking you - what do you think should be the first language pupils are exposed to in highschool? They have been teaching Pascal so far, but she's not sure that's a good course. She thought about switching to C (which I resented; considering not all pupils have interests in programming, to start with, and should be taught something higher level since they are just gripping the idea of a loop and such ... for a start), I suggested python or ruby (preferably py since it handles all paradigms). What is your opinion on this one? I looked, but didn't find a similar question on SO, so if there is one, please just point me towards it.   • What are Android different screens dimensions in dp for different screens (e.g. xlarge = 960dp x 720dp)?

So, each generalized screen size above has an associated minimum resolution that's defined by the system. These minimum sizes are in "dp" units—the same units you should use when defining your layouts—which allows the system to avoid worrying about changes in screen density. xlarge screens are at least 960dp x 720dp large screens are at least 640dp x 480dp normal screens are at least 470dp x 320dp small screens are at least 426dp x 320dp So, If I want to support all Android screens, can I create images, for full screen view, in those dimensions and that will be sufficient condition to support all available screens? or they are just the minimum sizes, and I need other dimensions?     Hi Experts, What would be the best design for a Java web based application to read Check or Credit Card from POS Devices which are configured/installed at client machine? The design which I have decided is: When cashier selects payment mode as 'Check' or 'Credit Card' open a pop-up. From pop-up, I am calling an Applet through JNLP which implements JPOS API to communicate with POS devices at client machine. When cashier swipes or inserts check, Applet class read them and send the information back to the pop-up window. Pop up window call the parent window, populate all the required field and close the pop-up.

  • Is "Systems Designer" the job title that best describes what I do? [closed]

    After having worked as Java developer for almost 3 years in the same company that I currently work at, I moved to a new position associated with the development of the same application. I’m in this new position for more than 1 year now. My official job title is Systems Designer, but I’m not sure this is a title that expresses well what I do. So my question here is what would be the most appropriate job title for me? I see this question as important for my career development. After all, I should be able to explain in one word what I do. And it’s no longer “Java Developer”. Well, in more than one word, this is what I do: The business analysts gather requirements / business problems to be solved with the clients and then discuss these requirements with me. Given the requirements, I design the high level solutions to be implemented in our system (e.g. a new screen on the client application, modifications to existing reports, extension to the XML export format of some objects, etc). I base my decision on the current capabilities of the system, the overall impact that the solutions would have on the system and the estimated effort to implement them (as I was a developer of this same application for almost 3 years before I moved to this position, I’m confident in my estimates). The solutions are discussed iteratively with the business analysts until we agree that they are good. The outcome of this analysis is what we call the “requirements design” document, which is written by me, shared with clients for approval and then also with the team that is going to implement the solutions and test them. Note that there are a few problems that I need to find a solution for that are non-functional. If the users are unhappy with the performance of a certain tool, I will investigate what can be done to speed it up. I will do some research – often based in the Java code itself - to identify possibilities of optimizations. But in this new position I no longer code, the main outcome of my work is really the “requirements design”. Is “Systems Designer” really the most appropriate job title?

  • How to create relationship between two tables with revisions using Entity Framework

    So I am in the process of redesigning a small database (and potentially a much larger one) but want to show the value of using revisions / history of the business objects. I am switching the data from Access to MSSQL 2008. I am having a lot of internal debate on what version of "revision history" to use in the design itself - and thought I had decided to add a "RevisionId" to all tables. With this design - adding a RevisionId to all tables we would like tracked - what would be the best way to create Navigational Properties and Relationships between two tables such as | Vendor | VendorContact | where a Vendor can have multiple contacts. The Contacts themselves will be under revision. Will it require custom extensions or am I over thinking this? Thanks in advance.

  • WPF: DataGrid Custom. ColumnDesign with my own classes

    Hi, iam looking for a datagrid which contains objects from my class. class user { string name; int ID; ... } i tried AutoGenerateColumns = true. this will add columns (name, ID, ... like the properties of my class) but i want a different design. not all attributes from the object shold be shown and the columnheader shouldn't be generated from the variablenames... if i build a custom. column-design, i cant add my objects / they will not be displayed. is it possible to define my own columns according to my objects/class. i read about databindings, but i have no idea how i can bind objects/classes in WPF. (in Visual Studio i cant choose my class as datacontext)

  • Using C# with Crystal Reports, How Can I Create 4-Up Subreports?

    The simplest example that I can provide for what I want to do is this: I need to create a Report, whose only requirement is that I have (4) of the same subreport on the page (imagine 4 portrait-oriented post cards on a page), each quadrant using a separate row from my datatable, yet all 4 are identical in terms of fields. If there are more than 4, it needs to carry over to a new page with the same format. I'm using C# and the built-in Crystal Reports Basic for the task.

  • What tools do you use when generating markup from mockups?

    So I endeavor to spend most of time on the app server side of things but time to time I need to get my hands dirty and generate markup/css/js from a wireframe or mockup. As far as tools go, Ive found browsershots and Litmus app helpful and of course, vm's as well for checking things out live in ie-{6,7,8}. Otherwise I do the heavy lifting in vim. For generating new markup thats not tied to a target design I think some of the css frameworks & tools like sass look useful but Im skeptical of their utility when needing to generate markup to match a photoshop design. So what tips / tools do you keep in your markup generating utility belt when building solid markup from designs? My list so far: Browsershots Browserlab.adobe.com Haml / Less / Sass (not used but will probably explore)

    Hello, I am looking for a book on advanced C programming that: Teaches how to effectively express one's solution in C when one already knows the language in depth. Shows some common design idioms expressed in C, like encapsulation, modularity and that kind of thing. Is example-driven with a lot of good-quality code. I already know the language itself so books like otherwise wonderful "Expert C Programming" by Peter van der Linden is not really what i am looking for. What i need is a book on how to express my design in C, what are the common idioms, best practices, etc. I would also like to note that i am primarily interested in C, not C++, C#, Objective-C or any other languages inspired by C-like syntax.     This question is directed to the non-english speaking people here. It is somewhat biased because SO is an "english-speaking" web forum, so... In the other hand, most developers would know english anyway... In your locale culture, are technical words translated into locale words ? For example, how "Design Pattern", or "Factory", or whatever are written/said in german, spanish, etc. etc. when used by IT? Are the english words prefered? The local translation? Do the two version (english/locale) are evenly used? Edit Could you write with your answer the locale translation of "Design Pattern"? In french, according to Wikipedia.fr, it is "Patron de conception", which translates back as "Model of Conceptualization" (I guess).

    I was tasked to conduct my first interview and would like to pose my question to this world for both their feedback on my question and also on their solutions. Question: I have a legacy system with users and files, the info of all files pertaining to a user are stored on a flat file. I want to upgrade this system by storing all info on a db, design tables, and create a C# system that will populate the new db as well as ftp the files to a new path. Define the desgin consideration and develop a prototype. Note: We are looking more for what design one would use and why rather than code that compiles.     I've researched for hours and still haven't found a robust, non-absolute-positioning solution for displaying multiple-column forms and values without using TABLE tags. Can someone point me to a resource specifically oriented towards reproducing table-based, multiple-column forms (like name and address forms) in CSS to standards? Most of the forms I see only have a single column with field/value.
