  So I have a question about Solr's field date types which is pretty straight forward: what's the difference between a 'date' field and a 'tdate' one? The schema .xml claims that 'For faster range queries, consider the tdate type' and 'A Trie based date field for faster date range queries and date faceting. ' Fair enough... but what's the precisionStep="6" all about? should i change this? does it change the way i would create the query in case I use the tdate? What's the real advantage or what does Solr do that makes it better? P.S went through google, Solr manual, solr wiki and the java docs without any luck so I'd appreciate a kind and explanatory answer :)... • are fixtures loaded when using the sql dump to create a test database

  Because of some non standard table creation options I am forced to use the sql dump instead of the standard schema.rb (i.e. I have uncommented this line in the environment.rb config.active_record.schema_format = :sql). I have noticed that when I use the sql dump that my fixtures do not seem to be loaded into the database. Some data is loaded into it but, I am not sure where it is coming from. Is this normal? and if it is normal can anybody tell me where this other data is coming from?

• IE CSS bug: table border showing div with visibility: hidden, position: absolute

  The issue I have a <div> on a page which is initially hidden with a visibility: hidden; position: absolute. The issue is that if a <div> hidden this way contains a table which uses border-collapse: collapse and has a border set on it cells, that border still shows "through" the hidden <div> on IE. Try this for yourself by running the code below on IE6 or IE7. You should get a white page, but instead you will see: Possible workaround Since this is happening on IE and not on other browsers, I assume that this is an IE bug.   I ran into an issue by introducing floating point columns in the MySQL database schema that the comparisons on floating point values don't return the correct results always. 1 - 50.12 2 - 34.57 3 - 12.75 4 - ...(rest all less than 12.00) SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `users` WHERE `points` > "12.75" This returns me "3". I have read that the comparisons of floating point values in MySQL is a bad idea and decimal type is the better option. Do I have any hope of moving ahead with the float type and get the comparisons to work correctly?

• json specifies "any UNICODE character"?

  Maybe this is just my unfamiliarity with unicode, so please correct me if I'm mistaken. Looking at http://json.org/, the spec says that a string can include "any UNICODE character", but this confuses me. JSON is a communication format correct? At the core of it, everything must translate down to bytes. In contrast, UNICODE is a logical format and must be encoded to be able to transmit it, right? So what did they mean there?

  I'm trying come up with the best method of synchronizing particular rows of 2 different database tables. So, for example there's 2 product tables in different databases as such... Origin Database product{ merchant_id, product_id, ... additional fields } Destination Database product{ merchant_id product_id ... additional fields } So, the database schema is the same for both. However I'm looking to select records with a particular merchant_id, remove all records from the destination table that have that merchant_id and replace those records with records from the origin database of the same merchant_id. My first thought was using mysqldump, parsing out the create table statements, and only running the Insert Statements. Seems like a pain though. So I was wondering if there is a better technique to do this. I would think mysql has some method of creating INSERT statements as output from a SELECT statement, so you can define how to insert specific record information into a new db. Any help would be appreciated, thank you much.

  Hi, I'm running through the Ruby on Rails tutorial at http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html (adjusting where appropriate for Google's App Engine). All is well up till section 6.3: when I try to click "New Post", I get the following error: Internal Server Error (500) Request Method: GET Request URL: http://localhost:8080/500.html access denied (java.io.FilePermission /dev/urandom read) It works fine when I upload the application to Google's App Engine; it's just on my development machine (OS X 10.6) that it doesn't work.   I need to ask a general question. I don't have the code in front of me because I'm writing this on my iPhone. I have a Class that represents a certain XML schema. I have a SPROC that returns this XML. What I need to do is deserialize the XML to this Class. XML: <xml> <person> <firstName>Bob</firstName> <lastName>Robby</lastName> </person> </xml> I need to deserialize this XML into the custom Person Class so I can loop through this Model and spit it out in the View. • How to do some preformance testing in asp.net mvc?

  Hi I am using asp.net mvc 2.0 and I want to test how long it takes to do some of my code. In one senario I do this load xml file up. validate xml file and deserailze. validate all rows in the xml file with more advanced validation that cannot be done in the schema validation. then I do a bulk insert. I want to know how long steps 1 to 3 take and how long step 4 takes. I tried to do like DateTime.UtcNow in areas and subtract them but it told me it took like 3 seconds but I know that is not right as steps 1 to 4 take 2mins to do.
