  • Specific DNS sometimes resolves to wildcard, incorrectly

    I have an intermittent problem, and I'm not sure where to start trying to troubleshoot it. In our dev environment, we have two visible IP addresses on load balancers, one to the front-end, and one to a number of back-end service machines. The front-end is configured to take a wildcard DNS name to support generic "portals." dev.example.com A 10.1.1.1 *.dev.example.com CNAME dev.example.com The back-end servers are all specific names within the same space: core.dev.example.com A 10.1.1.2 cms.dev.example.com CNAME core.dev.example.com search.dev.example.com CNAME core.dev.example.com Here's the problem. Periodically a developer or a program trying to reach, say, cms.dev.example.com will get a result that points to the front-end, instead of the back-end load balancer: cms.dev.example.com is an alias to core.dev.example.com core.dev.example.com is an alias to dev.example.com (WRONG!) dev.example.com 10.1.1.1 The developers are all on Mac OS X machines, though I've seen the problem occur on an Ubuntu machine as well, using a local cloud host DNS resolver. Sometimes the developer is using a VPN, which directs the DNS to its own resolver, and sometimes he's on the local net using a DNS resolver assigned by the NAT router. Sometimes clearing the Mac OS X DNS cache, logging into the VPN, then logging out of the VPN, will make the problem go away. The origin authoritative server is on zerigo, and a dig directly to their name servers always seems to give the correct answer. The published DNS cache time for these records is 15 minutes, but the problem has been intermittent for about a week. Any troubleshooting suggestions?

  • Ubuntu Pound Reverse Proxy Load Balancing Based off active server load?

    I have Pound installed on a loadbalancer. It seems to work okay, except that it randomly assigns the backend server to forward the request to. I've put 1 backend machine under so much load that it went into using swap, and I can't even ssh into it to test this scenareo. I would like the loadbalancer to realize that the machine is overloaded, and send it to a different backend machine. However it doesn't. I've read the man page and it seems like the directive "DynScale 1" is what would monitor this, but it still redirects to the overloaded server. I've also put in "HAport 22" to the backend figuring since I can't ssh in, neither could the loadbalancer and it would consider the backend server dead until it gets rid of the load and responds, but that didn't help either. If anyone could help with this, I'd appreciate it.     I have a table of values (partial) with 3 columns: month (from 1 to 12), code and value. E.g., MONTH | CODE | VALUE 1 | aaa | 111 1 | bbb | 222 1 | ccc | 333 2 | aaa | 1111 2 | ccc | 2222 The codes are clients and the values are sales volumes. Each row represents the sales for one month for one client. So I have three clients, namely aaa, bbb, and ccc. For month=1 their sales volumes are: aaa-111, bbb-222, and ccc-333. A client may or may not have sales for every month; for example, for the month 2, the client bbb has no sales. I have to construct a completed summary table for all the MONTH / CODE pairs with their corresponding VALUE (using the value from the "partial" table, if present, otherwise print a string "missing"). MONTH | CODE | VALUE 1 | aaa | 111 1 | bbb | 222 1 | ccc | 333 2 | aaa | 1111 2 | bbb | missing 2 | ccc | 2222 Or, to put it another way, the table is a linear representation of a matrix:                                 and I want to identify the cells for which no value was provided.     The problem I'm facing is that the client of my service will never send me a SOAPAction header. How can I tell Axis to still map to the incomming call to my service implementation anyway.   • How can I avoid permission denied errors when attempting to deploy a rails app with capistrano?

    I had kind of a weird setup today where I wanted to enable Windows Firewall on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 computer that would act as an Active Directory Domain Controller. I didn't see one resource on the Internet that listed what would be required to do this, so I thought I'd list them here and see if anyone has anything to add/sees something that isn't necessary. For that, you need to add two registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters Registry value: TCP/IP Port Value type: REG_DWORD Value data: <-- pick a port like 1600 and put it here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters Registry value: DCTcpipPort Value type: REG_DWORD Value data: <-- pick another port like 1650 and put it here ...don't forget to add entries in the firewall to allow those in (TCP, Subnet scope). After doing all that, I was able to add a client computer to the AD domain (behind Windows Firewall) and log in successfully.

    I've been looking at RFC5424 to find the formally specified marker that will end a syslog event. Unfortunately I couldn't find it. So If I wanted to implement some small syslog server that reacts on certain messages what is the marker that ends a message (yes commonly an event is a single line, but I just couldn't find it in the specification) Clarification: I call it event because I associate a message with a single line. An event could possibly be some thing like Type: foo Source: webservers whereas a message to me is this: Type: foo Source: webservers http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5424#section-6 defines: SYSLOG-MSG = HEADER SP STRUCTURED-DATA [SP MSG] neither STRUCTURED-DATA nor MSG tell me how these fields end. Especially MSG is defined as as MSG-ANY / MSG-UTF8 which expands to virtually anything. There's nothing that says a newline marks the end (or an 8 or an a for that matter).     Right now I have a RadToolTip inside of a RadGrid. The RadGrid displays a field from the datasource called "Value". The RadToolTip displays the same thing. I want to add another RadGrid inside of the RadToolTip. The function setting up the datasource of that second RadGrid should take "Value" as a parameter? How do I do that?   • [C#] Convert string to double with 2 digit after decimal separator

    All began with these simple lines of code: string s = "16.9"; double d = Convert.ToDouble(s); d*=100; The result should be 1690.0, but it's not. d is equal to 1689.9999999999998. All I want to do is to round a double to value with 2 digit after decimal separator. A workaround to this problem is to concatenate "00001" to the string and then use the Math.Round function (commented in the example above). This double value multiplied to 100 (as integer) is send to a device (cash register) and this values must be correct. I am using VS2005 + .NET CF 2.0 Is there another more "elegant" solution, I am not happy with this one.

  • JSF a4j:commandButton not working when 'disabled' is set

    Hello, When I include a 'disabled' attribute on an a4j:commandButton, the button's action is not performed. Taking the 'disabled' attribute out causes it to work properly. I am not doing any special validation (that I'm aware of) and am not seeing any validation error messages.   • Please help me understand why my XSL Transform is not transforming

    I'm trying to transform one XML format to another using XSL. Try as I might, I can't seem to get a result. I've hacked away at this for a while now and I've had no success. I'm not even getting any exceptions. I'm going to post the entire code and hopefully someone can help me work out what I've done wrong. I'm aware there are likely to be problems in the xsl I have in terms of selects and matches, but I'm not fussed about that at the moment. The output I'm getting is the input XML without any XML tags. The transformation is simply not occurring.
