  The UIPerfomance plugin is an easy way to speed up your web pages by applying some of the best practices rules from Yahoo performance team (like minifying, setting a far-future expires header, versioned images...) Unfortunately I didn't find a way to store the static resources in a location outside of the webapplication which has his own advantages ( smaller WAR sizes, better optimize cookieless server, static resources served faster by a highly optimized native httpd, no need to redeploy WAR when updating static resources..). So my question is: is it possible to use this great plugin with static resoures stored outside the web application? And if yes, how?

• Fake "user initiated" <audio> tag on iPad

  I know that Apple's docs say that an mp3 within an <audio tag on iPhone OS can't be played without user intervention (they cite bandwidth concerns, totally reasonable). However, has anyone succeeded in faking a user action to play the audio? Perhaps faking events to off screen native audio controls with JavaScript? I'm using jPlayer right now which works great on desktop Safari, but is silent on my iPad. I'm prototyping a touch interface using WebKit on the iPad, and audio is an integral part of the experience, so yes, I do have a good reason to want to override this convention. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

• How can I programmatically find the IP address/netmask/gateway configured for a specific network dev

  Hi I would like to write a piece of code which checks, for each network device (e.g. eth0, lo, master devices) some statistics and configuration data about that device. I could find the statistics data (and most of the configuration data) in /sys/class/net/..., however, I couldn't find any C/C++ API or any entry in procfs/sysfs listing the inet addr, netmask and gateway. Some alternatives I checked: parsing the output from ifconfig/route/some other utilities: I don't want to start a subprocess every time I need to do the inspection. parsing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/: will give me only the start-up configuration, and not the current state. Also, since this code is intended for a product in my workplace, where every external library is inspected thoroughly (meaning it will take me forever to add any external library) I prefer solutions which rely on Linux native API and not external libraries. • PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists is very slow if category doesn't exists

  I have kind of library which uses a bunch of its own perf counters. But I want my library works fine even if that perf counters weren't installed. So I've created wrappers aroung PerformanceCounter and on the first use check if PerfCounter exists or not. If they exists then I'm using native PerformanceCounter instead I'm using a wrapper which do nothing. So to check perf counter existence I use PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists The problem is that if there isn't such category then PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists call takes (on my machine) about 10 seconds! Needless to say it's too slow. What can I do? • Drawbacks with reading and writing a big file to or from disk at once instead of small chunks?

  I work mainly on Windows and Windows CE based systems, where CreateFile, ReadFile and WriteFile are the work horses, no matter if I'm in native Win32 land or in managed .Net land. I have so far never had any obvious problem writing or reading big files in one chunk, as opposed to looping until several smaller chunks are processed. I usually delegate the IO work to a background thread that notifies me when it's done. But looking at file IO tutorials or "textbook examples", I often find the "loop with small chunks" used without any explanation of why it's used instead of the more obvious (I dare to say!) "do it all at once". Are there any drawbacks to the way I do that I haven't understood?

• Java library to encode / decode AMF

  Hi chaps, I currently have a Java server that talks to a Flash client by passing JSON encoded data over a binary socket connection. Is there a way on either side to encode / decode packets as AMF instead of JSON? It seems to me that there should be some native support in Flash player for doing this? All the implementations I have found of AMF serialization seem to be embedded inside an application framework. Simiarly so, does anyone know if it's possible to decode AMF packets independently of a connection implementation in Flash?

• How do I send a PDF in a MemoryStream to the printer in .Net?

  I have a PDF created in memory using iTextSharp and contained in a MemoryStream. I now need to translate that MemoryStream PDF into something the printer understands. I've used Report Server in the past to render the pages to the printer format but I cant use it for this project. Is there a native .Net way of doing this? For example, GhostScript would be OK if it was a .Net assembly but I don't want to bundle any non .Net stuff along with my installer. The PrintDocument class in .Net is great for sending content to the printer but I still need to translate it from a PDF stream into GDI at the page level. Any good hints? Thanks in advance Ryan

• Disk-based caching of dynamic images in IIS 7

  I'm writing an image server which needs to handle a relatively large number of concurrent requests (~5,000). The images being served are dynamically scaled down and cropped based on per-image specifications, which are queried from a database. The number of images is rather large, so an in-memory cache isn't viable (thrashing would most definitely occur). I'm using native caching in IIS 7 to avoid hitting the ASP.NET app which generates the images on-the-fly. I've looked around, but I couldn't find a simple way to configure IIS to store the cache on-disk -- is there such an option, or would I need to roll my own? I'd rather avoid placing the generated images in a public folder, so they can be served statically, since I would prefer to invalidate the cache entries using a query parameter (last-edit time from the database,) which doesn't seem possible to reconcile with static caching. I would love to get some feedback on this!

  If you've ever seen an application in the Adobe Creative Suite 5 (CS5), you may have noticed that it doesn't look like the native Windows GUI.. They have modified it to have a different look to it. Where would someone begin to make an application that has a custom skin? CS5 uses the Adobe Source library for it's widget/control management, so I tried downloading and compiling the Adobe Source Library to see if I could make a nice skinned app like Photoshop CS5, but after finally getting it to compile and tested it, I realized the library was only for managing widgets and not skinning the GUI, like CS5 has. Where would I begin to make a nice skinned program like Adobe Cs5 applications? Can anyone point me in the right direction? Do I simply use the WM_PAINT Message from WinAPI and render my own widgets using openGL or something?

  I have a couple of questions about connectivity on Android, if anyone has any insight it would be great. What is the default when an application wants to wirelessly connect? Is it wlan? And if wlan is switched off or there is no access points around is it 3g or gprs? Is a device always ip connected? Or when its disabled from wlan or 3g does it lose its ip address? Is an application, for example the browser only ever connected to one ip address? Or can it be connected to multiple addresses for each radio such as gprs or wifi (wlan)? Can an application decide which connection to open a socket to? For example can I create an application and decide whether to connect the socket to the wlan or gprs? Or does the OS decide? Finally how do native applications handle connectivity? In the same manner?

• LNK2001: What have I forgotton to set?

  Following on from my previous question regarding debugging of native code, I decided to create a simple test from a console app as I wasn't getting anywhere with debugging the service directly. So I created a vc6 console app, added the dll project to the workspace and ran it. Instead of executing as expected it spat out the following linker errors: main.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "int __stdcall hmDocumentLAdd(char *,char *,long,char *,char *,long,long,long,long *)" (?hmDocumentLAdd@@YGHPAD0J00JJJPAJ@Z) main.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "int __stdcall hmGetDocBasePath(char *,long)" (?hmGetDocBasePath@@YGHPADJ@Z) Debug/HazManTest.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 2 unresolved externals This seems to be a simple case of forgetting something in the linker options: However everything seems to be normal, and the lib file, dll and source is available. If I change the lib file to load to nonsense it kicks up the fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file "asdf.lib", so that isn't a problem. I have previously linked to dll and they have just worked, so what I have forgotton to do?

  Hi I have a web application running in cluster mode with a load balancer. It consists in two tomcats (T1, and T2) addressing only one DB. T2 is nfs mounted to T1. This is the only dofference between both nodes. I have a java method generating some files. If the request runs on T1 there is no problem but if the request is running on node 2 I get an exception as follows: java.io.IOException: Invalid argument at java.io.FileOutputStream.close0(Native Method) at java.io.FileOutputStream.close(FileOutputStream.java:279) The corresponding code is as follows: for (int i = 0; i < dataFileList.size(); i++) { outputFileName = outputFolder + fileNameList.get(i); FileOutputStream fileOut = new FileOutputStream(outputFileName); fileOut.write(dataFileList.get(i), 0, dataFileList.get(i).length); fileOut.flush(); fileOut.close(); } The exception appears at the fileOut.close() Any hint? Now I want to implement a multiply method which multiplies Matrix A with Matrix B and stores the result in Matrix C. Some OpenGL implementations (Like the OpenGL ES stuff in Android) provide native code for this but others doesn't. So I want to provide a generic multiplication method for these implementations.

• How do I wrap a selection with an HTML tag in Visual Studio?

  This seems like the most basic question in the world, but damned if I can find an answer. Is there a keyboard shortcut, either native to Visual Studio or through Code Rush or other third-party plug-in, to wrap the current selection with an HTML tag? I'm tired of typing the opening tag, cutting the misplaced closing tag to the clipboard, moving the cursor, and pasting it at the end where it belongs. Update: This is how TextMate handles surrounding a selection with a tag. Frankly, I'm stunned that Visual Studio doesn't seem to have a similar feature. Creating a macro or snippet for every conceivable tag I might want to use seems absurd.

  First, I tried to migrate my databases with SQL Server Migration Assistant for MySql and it worked fine. But now, I have some problems with my code. I had this line on MYSQL version : $fct="SELECT * FROM `users` WHERE `USER` LIKE CONVERT( _utf8 '$LOGIN' USING latin1 ) COLLATE latin1_swedish_ci AND `PASS` LIKE CONVERT( _utf8 '$PASS'USING latin1 ) COLLATE latin1_swedish_ci"; This line worked fine but when i try to put this on my SQL Version i get : Error : SQLSTATE[42000]: [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Incorrect syntax with the keyword 'mictest'. • spl_object_hash for PHP < 5.2 (unique ID for object instances)

  I'm trying to get unique IDs for object instances in PHP 5+. The function, spl_object_hash() is available from PHP 5.2 but I'm wondering if there's a workaround for older versions. There are a couple of functions in the comments on php.net but they're not working for me. The first (simplified): function spl_object_hash($object){ if (is_object($object)){ return md5((string)$object); } return null; } does not work with native objects (such as DOMDocument), and the second: function spl_object_hash($object){ if (is_object($object)){ ob_start(); var_dump($object); $dump = ob_get_contents(); ob_end_clean(); if (preg_match('/^object\(([a-z0-9_]+)\)\#(\d)+/i', $dump, $match)) { return md5($match[1] . $match[2]); } } return null; } looks like it could be a major performance buster! • Best compiled language for Mac OS X and Linux compatibility

  We need to write some software that will compile and run on both an Mac OS X server and Ubuntu. We would love to use Objective-C with all of its Cocoa goodness, however the GNUstep implementations of the parts we are using are broken (in the latest Ubuntu package anyway.) In light of this should we use C++ (I would really rather not), C or something else that we have not thought of? It is a server/back-end process that is very resource intensive, Java and other interpreted versions of this software perform much worse than the Objective-C proof of concept we have written, hence we now wish to re-write in a "compiled[1]" language. (NB: Some people might consider this subjective, however at the end of the day we do need to get a job done, there has to be a reasonably appropriate correct answer here). [1] Compiled to native CPU instructions, not compiled into "byte codes" that then have to be run by an interpreter.

• Reinstall TeamCity when Tomcat becomes corrupt

  I've got a TeamCity 4 installation where tomcat has bit the dust with the following error "The APR Based Apache Tomcat Native library which allows for optimal performance in production environments was not found in java.library path". It appears this started happening once the JDK was installed on the server to allow for a compile. The JDK has been removed and the JRE reinstalled but still no go. My question is should I reinstall TeamCity completely or is there a way to simply reinstall tomcat so I don't hose the configuration? Your help is greatly appreciated.

  Hello all, If i apply a property to a parent widget it is automatically applied for child widgets too.. Is there any way of preventing this?? For example if i set background color as white in a dialog the button,combo boxes and scroll bars looks white as it lacks it native look(have to say it's unpleasant & ugly).. Is there any way that i can apply the stylesheets only to a parent widget not to it's children??? Experts help please..
