• rEFIt can't sync GPT and MBR after resizing boot camp partition

  I've been trying to follow the instructions here to increase the size of my boot camp partition: http://plonsdale.wordpress.com/2011/06/24/tech-tip-increasing-the-size-of-a-bootcamp-partition-with-free-tools/ I got as far as step 3 when I booted from the rEFIt CD. I selected the partitioning tool and it gave me the following message: Error: Not Found returned from gptsync.efi Now the Windows boot camp partition doesn't show up when I hold alt when starting my mac. Trying to boot into Windows using the rEFIt CD gives me a message saying no Windows installation is found. I then booted off the Windows 7 install CD and the 'repair' option gave me this message: This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows ...and if I try and go install a fresh version of Windows on this partition using the 'Custom (advanced)' option I get an error about the partition saying: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style

• Adsense-type services without the content check?

  Are there any ad-placing services that don't mind that the page is nothing but a page of ads? Someone else with a .cn tld is pointing to my IP address. I currently have that site on its own name based virtual host that responds to every request with a 403, but I figure if I am paying for the incoming bandwidth, I might as well try to make some money off it. I don't want to actually create any content for this site, which prevents me from using adsense. My only requirements are that it is free for me to sign up and that they don't mind the lack of content.

• Office 2011 Mac - Unable to save Word files, plus normal.dot alert errors

  There are actually 3 errors here. When I open Word, I get: Word cannot open the existing global template. () If I create a file, type a character and try to save to the desktop (that I have no problems writing to otherwise), I get: Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write-protected. Try one or more of the following: * Free more memory * Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected, or damaged. () I am just saving to the desktop, and I can save excel files (or anything else) there. After the failure, if I save again, the default file name becomes: .doc...doc Weird. Finally, when I close word completely, I get: Do you want to replace the existing Normal.dotm.

• Spotlight on an Office – Reading TVP offices

  This month we’re in the UK at the Reading offices, for ‘Spotlight on an office’. The Reading Office, which is Oracle’s UK Headquarters, is based in Thames Valley Park (TVP), which is a bustling hive of activity that houses many different companies, a gym, and even a nursery. Overlooking the Thames and some of England’s beautiful countryside, this office, just a short free bus ride from Reading Town Centre is in a fantastic location. The offices themselves are made up of 5 different buildings, each with their own car park, restaurant, and design. The main building or TVP 510 as it is referred to, sits resplendent next to an extremely blue (for the UK) pond, filled with large koi-carp that on a sunny day like to come to the surface of the lake and bask. As the main hub of activity, TVP 510 is where you will find our Dry Cleaning service, the Ozone Gym, the main restaurant (which never fails to have someone in it), and the Marquee which sits outside the back amongst the picnic benches, and is where we have Barbeques in the summer time. Another highlight of the Reading Offices is tucked away in TVP530; the home of H20, and our sports and social club. This is the building that can be best be described as having the ‘cool’ vibe, where you can relax and unwind, all whilst sipping a Starbucks (or Costa if you prefer, located in TVP550), and playing a game of Pool in the cafeteria, or alternatively you can sit back and enjoy a seat in one of the luxury massage chairs! If you feel so inclined, you can also hire out an OraBike from any of the TVP offices, and if you are anything like some of my team, cycle from Reading to Bath using the towpath starting in Thames Valley Park. Oracle’s Reading Offices are a great place to work, they are home to a diverse range of people and have great atmosphere which would suit a graduate, intern, or anyone who is looking to come and work for Oracle in the UK.

• How to input 64-bit hex values in octave

  I'm trying to use Octave as a programmer's calculator. I want to input a 64-bit pointer, but when I do apparently the 64-bit value gets silently truncated to 32-bit: octave:44> base_ptr=0x1010101020202020 base_ptr = 538976288 octave:45> uint64(base_ptr) ans = 538976288 octave:46> printf("%lx\n", base_ptr) 20202020 So it seems like it's truncated the input value to the low 32-bits. I would use scanf, but the docs say it should only be used internally. How can I input the full 64-bit value? Alternately, is there some awesome free programmer's calculator out there for Windows? (I know Windows calculator has a programmer's mode but I would like arbitrary variable support). I tried using my ti-89 but it also doesn't support 64-bit hex.

• How can I rank teams based off of head to head wins/losses

  I'm trying to write an algorithm (specifically in Ruby) that will rank teams based on their record against each other. If a team A and team B have won the same amount of games against each other, then it goes down to point differentials. Here's an example: A beat B two times B beats C one time A beats D three times C bests D two times D beats C one time B beats A one time Which sort of reduces to A[B] = 2 B[C] = 1 A[D] = 3 C[D] = 2 D[C] = 1 B[A] = 1 Which sort of reduces to A[B] = 1 B[C] = 1 A[D] = 3 C[D] = 1 D[C] = -1 B[A] = -1 Which is about how far I've got I think the results of this specific algorithm would be: A, B, C, D But I'm stuck on how to transition from my nested hash-like structure to the results. My psuedo-code is as follows (I can post my ruby code too if someone wants): For each game(g): hash[g.winner][g.loser] += 1 That leaves hash as the first reduction above hash2 = clone of hash For each key(winner), value(losers hash) in hash: For each key(loser), value(losses against winner): hash2[loser][winner] -= losses Which leaves hash2 as the second reduction Feel free to as me question or edit this to be more clear, I'm not sure of how to put it in a very eloquent way. • Directly paste clipboard image into gmail message

  I would like to be able to directly paste my clipboard image into a Gmail message. I could then just do alt-print screen, go to Gmail compose and press ctrl-v to embed a screenshot, for instance. I'm not talking about embedding a image from disk into my email; that's easily done. I want to skip the step where I have to save it to disk first. Eudora/Thunderbird support this. There's a program that does this, it's at picturepaste.com, but it's paid (and and the website uses Javascript for no obvious reasons). You can see the demo movie there if it's not clear what I would like. I would like to find a free alternative, or make one myself, but I have no clue how picturepaste works.

  I wanted to officially thank the organizers, speakers, volunteers and the attendees of SharePoint Saturday South Florida. Being the first event in South Florida the reception was phenomenon and the group of speakers from keynote by Joel Oleson to session’s speakers from well renowned speakers like John Holliday, Randy Disgrill, Richard Harbridge, Ameet Phadnis, Fabian Williams, Chris McNulty, Jaime Velez to organizers like Michael Hinckley amongst others. With my Business Intelligence (BI) presentation being on the last track of the day, I spent very quality time networking with these great guys and getting the insider scope on International SharePoint Community from Joel and his son which was mesmerizing. I had a very active audience to a point where we couldn’t accommodate all the contents within the 1hr allocated time because they were very engaged and wanted a deep dive session on news features like PowerPivot, enhancements on PerformancePoint, Excel Services amongst others in order to understand the business value and how SharePoint 2010 is making the self-service BI become a reality. How well do they support the process of game-development? What are the issues using VCS, with regard to non-text files (binary files), large projects, etc? Also, please list some brief details in your answer, about whether your VCS is free or commercial, distributed versus centralized, etc. Update: Found a nice article comparing two of the VCS below - apparently, Git is MacGyver and Mercurial is Bond. Well, I'm glad that's settled... And the author has a nice quote at the end: It’s OK to proselytize to those who have not switched to a distributed VCS yet, but trying to convert a Git user to Mercurial (or vice-versa) is a waste of everyone’s time and energy. I had a telephone interview and then a face-to-face interview. On a cold and grey morning, I arrived in Milan....my first impression was fantastic....a big modern building with wide TVs everywhere. I was a little nervous but very excited. I understood this could be a great opportunity... The interview went well and I started to work in March. After a training period I was quickly involved in the closing of the last quarter of the fiscal year - of which May is the last month at Oracle. Working as a License Contract Manager is a real challenge for a fresh graduate. It involves thoroughly understanding the Oracle Policies and Practices with regards to License Contracts. In my experience, especially in May, I learnt to work under high pressure, within time constrains, and to keep up with constant changes. In this period I also had the opportunity to be involved in different negotiations, being directly in contact with the customers. This helped me to develop my relational skills during complex transactions. Looking back at the nine months at Oracle I can say I have a better understanding of the IT world. • Windows HTTP proxy client to pass service requests to VPN

  I've got access to a network via CheckPoint VPN (Windows client). Problem is, I have a linux box that needs to talk to its web services and the target web servers are inside the VPN. So far, we have been unable to connect linux to the VPN (and I'm not trying to solve that problem at the moment). I'm wondering if (temporarily) I can setup a proxy server on a Windows (XP) box to shuttle HTTP requests back and forth? If so, what'd be a good application to do this? (hopefully free/open-source) TIA

• Plastic Clamshell Packaging Voted Worse Design Ever

  We’ve all been there: frustrated and trying free a new purchase from it’s plastic clamshell jail. You’re not alone, the packaging design has been voted the worst in history. In a poll at Quora, users voted on the absolute worst piece of design work they’d encountered. Overwhelmingly, they voted the annoying-to-open clamshell design to the top. The author of the top comment/entry, Anita Shillhorn writes: “Design should help solve problems” — clamshells are supposed to make it harder to steal small products and easier for employees to arrange on display — but this packaging, she says, makes new ones, such as time wasted, frustration, and the little nicks and scrapes people incur as they just try to get their damn lightbulb out. This is a product designed for the manufacturers and the retailers, not the end users.   What are some good examples of exuberant in-game instructions for telling the player to repeatedly and quickly press a button or perform an action? I'm especially interested in examples in retro games (e.g., from the NES, SNES, and 1980-90s arcade eras), and I would love to see examples with text, graphics, or both. To illustrate, here are a few examples of the type of instructions that I'm thinking of: Smash the A button to lift something heavy! Toggle the joystick back and forth to break free! Quickly press the button to build power in a meter! I'm working on a 2D iOS game with retro-style pixel art, and there's a point where I want the player to quickly tap on a sprite to complete an action. I have a serviceable starting point -- the word "TAP" flashing with an arrow repeatedly moving downward beneath it: But it still doesn't feel quite right. I would love to see some actual examples from the golden days of 2D gaming to use as reference material. I know examples abound, but I'm just struggling to think of any concrete ones at the moment. Can you think of any examples of this type of thing in old games?

• Computer Studdering When Transferring Over Network

  This is a really weird problem that I've never even seen before. When I copy to or from my server share, my computer studders terribly and the data transfers very slowly at only around 12MB/s. By studdering I mean the mouse skips around and all my applications respond very slowly; as soon as I cancel the transfer it resolves immediately. I looked at Task Manager and the CPU is only at ~35% with plenty of RAM free. This only started semi-recently; before, I had no problems and the transfer speed maxed out the gigabit connection. I have two hard drives in my computer. When I try transferring files between drives it's fine, but when I copy from the share to either drive or to it from either drive, I get studdering. I'm running Windows 7 x64. Anyone have any idea what's going on? Any help would be much appreciated.

  For testing I hosted my website on free server from 000webhost.com They have a directory structure:- (root folder) \ (public folder) \public_html this directory structure enables to keep all the library files in root folder and all public data in \public_html, so I developed my website accordingly, and my final structure looked like:- / /include(this folder contains library files) /logs(log files) /public_html /public_html/index.php /public_html/home.php /public_html/and other public files on 000webhost makes only public_folder available to be accessed via url and my url looked neat and clean like www.xample.com/index.php or www.example.com/home.php but after completion of development I moved website to shared host purchased from go-daddy.com, now they do not have any such kind of directory permission, all the files are kept in root folder and are accessible via url also url has become like:- www.example.com/public_html/home.php or www.example.com/public_html/index.php How should I redirect url request to public_html folder again so as to make library file unavailable to public access and make url neat and clean.

• Dual-Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 alongside Windows 7. I wanted to check out what it's all about. By the way, i actually like the interface a lot and the free office suite is very very nice. I love how they can save to the .docx as well. Onto the story: I installed it using this tutorial and I set it all up and everything and things were great. I used the EasyBCD 2.2 Tool and created an Ubuntu 12.04.1 entry and when I boot the computer the Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1 option show up. However, when I click Ubuntu it does not boot. It say and error and says I must put in the Windows CD to repair or something like this. Here's my system specs: ASRock Extreme4 (EUFI BIOS) Corsair Vengaence 2x4GB nVidia GeForce 9800GT i5-3570K 3.4GHz Corsair 620W Modular 500GB WD Caviar Blue I have no clue what could be wrong with it and I would love any assistance. I am willing to mess around and if something happens wrong I can just reinstall windows and it won't be a huge deal. Thank you very much! • Reflecting on 2010 and Looking into 2011

  In early 2010, I had blogged and shared my excitement as I was about to embark on a new journey relocating to South Florida.     As I settled down and adjusted to my new life, I was presented with an opportunity to get actively involved and volunteer in the local Florida .Net and Project Management communities.  I have since devoted a significant portion of my time to community initiatives, coordinating the West Palm Beach .Net User Group, volunteering as a member of the INETA Speaker’s Bureau and traveling to attend/speak at .Net code camps and user groups throughout the states of Florida and New York. I have also taken on various volunteer roles at the South Florida Chapter of the Project Management Institute starting as core team member on the chapter’s mentoring initiative and ending the year as Project Manager of the chapter’s mentoring program and as Director of Electronic Communications on the chapter’s IT team. I am also serving a one year term (2010-2011) as secretary and founding board member of Florida’s first official chapter of the International Association for Software Architects (IASA).   A big thank you is due for those who afforded me the opportunity and privilege to take part of these initiatives and those who provided guidance and encouragement when I needed them the most.   Looking ahead into 2011, I hope to continue my community involvement and volunteer activities. I will start by dedicating the first 5 weekends in the New Year to teach a free comprehensive Microsoft PowerPoint class at church. My goal will be to start from scratch and slowly cover the various available PowerPoint features that can be leveraged to create captivating presentations.
