• Why am I unable to telnet to a local port that has a listening service?

  I suspect this is either a very simple question, or a very complex one. I have a headless server running ubuntu 10.04 that I can ssh into. I have full root access to the system. I am trying to set up an ssh tunnel to allow me to vnc to the system (but that isn't my question. I have vnc running on port 5903, here is the netstat output for that: Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:5903 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 7173/Xtightvnc tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 465/sshd But when I try to telnet to that port, from within the same system and login, I get unable to connect errors # telnet localhost 5903 Trying ::1... Trying 127.0.0.1... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out I am able to telnet to port 22 (as a verification) ~# telnet localhost 22 Trying ::1... Connected to localhost. Which I pretty much knew. The question remains what is blocking it and how to modify. Re-re-edit: To check Paul Lathrop's suggested answer, I first verified my ip address with ifconfig: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 02:16:3e:42:28:8f inet addr:10.0.10.3 Bcast:10.0.10.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 Then tried to telnet to 5903 from that address: # telnet 10.0.10.3 5903 Trying 10.0.10.3... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out No luck. Re-re-re-re-edit: Ok, I think I have isolated it a bit to vncserver, not the firewall, darn it. I shut off vncserver and had netcat listen on port 5903. My vnc client then was able to establish a connnection and sit and wait for a response. Looks like I should be chasing a vnc problem. At least that is progress Thanks for the help

• Please verify my layout: bottom button keeps coming up over keyboard

  Hi everyone, I have a layout which does almost what I want. There's just one bug regarding the button at the bottom. I should stay at the bottom at all times. But whenever I bring up the soft-keyboard the button will be displayed above the keyboard. This is not what I want but it should become covered by the keyboard. Moreover, I'd be happy if you could comment on how the layout's built. • Problem with video playback on iPad with MPMoviePlayerViewController

  Hello everybody... I have been fighting some code for about a week, and am hoping that someone else may have experienced this problem and can point me in the right direction. I am using the MPMoviePlayerViewController to play a video on the iPad. The primary problem is that it works FLAWLESSLY on the iPad Simulator, but will not play at all on the iPad. I have tried re-encoding the video to make sure that isn't an issue. The video I'm using is currently a 480x360 video encoded with H.264 Basline 3.0 with AAC/LC audio. The video plays fine on the iPhone, and also does play through Safari on the iPad. The video actually loads, and you can scrub through the video with the scrubber bar and see that it is there. The frames actually display, but just will not play. If you click play, it just immediately stops. Even when I have mp.moviePlayer.shouldAutoplay=YES set, you can see the player attempt to play, but only for a split second (maybe 1 frame?). • Android RelativeLayout fill_parent unexpected behavior in a ListView with varying row heights

  I'm currently working on a small update to a project and I'm having an issue with Relative_Layout and fill_parent in a list view. I'm trying to insert a divider between two sections in each row, much like the divider in the call log of the default dialer. I checked out the Android source code to see how they did it, but I encountered a problem when replicating their solution. If I set the RelativeLayout's layout_height property to fill_parent, the divider does not scale vertically to fill the row (it just remains a 1px dot). If I set layout_height to "?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight", the divider fills the row, but the thumbnails shrink. I've done some debugging in the getView() method of the adapter, and it seems that the divider's height is not being set properly once the row has it's proper height. Here is a portion of the getView() method: public View getView(int position, View view, ViewGroup parent) { if (view == null) { view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.tag_list_item, parent, false); } The rest of the method simply sets the appropriate text and images for the row. Also, I create the inflater object in the adapter's constructor with: inflater = LayoutInflater.from(context); Am I missing something essential? Or does fill_parent just not work with dynamic heights?

  Hey I'm trying to connect to my Wcf service which is configured using castles wcf facility. When I go to the service in a browser i get: Metadata publishing for this service is currently disabled. Which lists a load of instructions which i cant do because the configuration isnt in the web.config. when I try to connect using VS/add service reference i get: The HTML document does not contain Web service discovery information. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'http://s.ibzstar.com/userservices.svc'. Content Type application/soap+xml; charset=utf-8 was not supported by service http://s.ibzstar.com/userservices.svc. The client and service bindings may be mismatched. The remote server returned an error: (415) Cannot process the message because the content type 'application/soap+xml; charset=utf-8' was not the expected type 'text/xml; charset=utf-8'.. If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again. Anyone know what I need to do to get this working? • C# remote web request certificate error

  Hi. I am currently integrating a payment gateway into an application. Following a successful transaction the remote payment gateway posts details of the transaction back to my application (ITN). It posts to a HttpHandler that is used to read and validate the data. Part of the validation performed is a POST made by the handler to a validation service provided by the payment gateway. This effectively posts some of the original form values received back to the payment gateway to ensure they are valid. The remote certificate does appear to be valid. The way I worked around this was to do a StreamReader.ReadToEnd, then do Regex.Replace on the result of that to yank out the script block, before passing the modified string to XmlReader.Create(). Feels like a hack. Has anyone got a better approach? I don't like this because I have to read in a 125k string into memory. Is it valid rss to include "complex content" like that - a script block inside an element?

• Wildcards in jnlp template file

  Since the last security changes in Java 7u40, it is required to sign a JNLP file. This can either be done by adding the final JNLP in JNLP-INF/APPLICATION.JNLP, or by providing a template JNLP in JNLP-INF/APPLICATION_TEMPLATE.JNLP in the signed main jar. The first way works well, but we would like to allow to pass a previously unknown number of runtime arguments to our application.   It looks like all of my mappings are compiling correctly, I'm able to validly get a session from session factory. However, when I try to ISession.SaveOrUpdate(obj); I get this. • <msbuild/> task fails while <devenv/> succeeds for MFC application in CruiseControl.NET?

  The Overview I am working on a Continuous Integration build of a MFC appliction via CruiseControl.net and VS2010. When building my .sln, a "Visual Studio" CCNet task (<devenv/>) works, but a simple MSBuild wrapper script (see below) run via the CCNet <msbuild/> task fails with errors like: error RC1015: cannot open include file 'winres.h'.. error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afxwin.h': No such file or directory error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'afx.h': No such file or directory The Question How can I adjust the build environment of my msbuild wrapper so that the application builds correctly? (Pretty clearly the MFC paths aren't right for the msbuild environment, but how do i fix it for MSBuild+VS2010+MFC+CCNet?) Background Details We have successfully upgraded an MFC application (.exe with some MFC extension .dlls) to Visual Studio 2010 and can compile the application without issue on developer machines. Now I am working on compiling the application on the CI server environment I did a full installation of VS2010 (Professional) on the build server. In this way, I knew everything I needed would be on the machine (one way or another) and that this would be consistent with developer machines. VS2010 is correctly installed on the CI server, and the devenv task works as expected I now have a wrapper MSBuild script that does some extended version processing and then builds the .sln for the application via an MSBuild task. This wrapper script is run via CCNet's MSBuild task and fails with the above mentioned errors The Simple MSBuild Wrapper <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Project ToolsVersion="4.0" DefaultTargets="Build" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003"> <Target Name="Build"> <!-- Doing some versioning stuff here--> <MSBuild Projects="target.sln" Properties="Configuration=ReleaseUnicode;Platform=Any CPU;..." /> </Target> </Project> My Assumptions This seems to be a missing/wrong configuration of include paths to standard header resources of the MFC persuasion I should be able to coerce the MSBuild environment to consider the relevant resource files from my VS2010 install and have this approach work. Given the vs2010 msbuild support for visual c++ projects (.vcxproj), shouldn't msbuilding a solution be pretty close to compiling via visual studio? But how do I do that? Am I setting Environment variables? Registry settings? I can see how one can inject additional directories in some cases, but this seems to need a more systemic configuration at the compiler defaults level. Update 1 This appears to only ever happen in two cases: resource compilation (rc.exe), and precompiled header (stdafx.h) compilation, and only for certain projects? I was thinking it was across the board, but indeed it appears only to be in these cases. I guess I will keep digging and hope someone has some insight they would be willing to share...

• Linux - serial port read returning EAGAIN...

  Hello all! I am having some trouble reading some data from a serial port I opened the following way. I've used this instance of code plenty of times and all worked fine, but now, for some reason that I cant figure out, I am completely unable to read anything from the serial port. But... when I do a read afterwards, I get a "Resource Temporarily Unavailable" error from errno. I tested select to see when the file descriptor had something t read... but it always times out! I read data like this: ret = read(hCom, rxchar, n); and I always get an EAGAIN and I have no idea why. All help would be appreciated. Cheers

  I am trying to register an interceptor using a annotation-driven controller configuration. As far as I can tell, I've done everything correctly but when I try testing the interceptor nothing happens. • onListItemClick and CheckedTextView not respoding

• Why does my layout repeats in device but looks fine on emulator when an image is added in a Relative Layout?

  let me try to explain clearly with what I want here. I have a RelativeLayout that contains a header image and the content below it. Now, when i have a header image and a list view below it, the page fits the screen in the device properly, the layout does not repeat. But when I place an image below the header image, the layout repeats in the device. Meaning i could see 2 header images in the device. Some page, I could see half of the header image that is not supposed to be there (repeated header image). However, in emulator, all the pages looks fine and fit the screen nicely. I tried changing to LinearLayout, RelativeLayout inside LinearLayout, Relative Layout, it gave me the same outcome. I hope someone could tell me why this happened. Thanks. • Integrating POP3 client functionality into a C# application?

  I have a web application that requires a server based component to periodically access POP3 email boxes and retrieve emails. The service then needs to process the emails which will involve: Validating the email against some business rules (does it contain a valid reference in the subject line, which user sent the mail, etc.) Analysing and saving any attachments to disk Take the email body and attachment details and create a new item in the database Or update an existing item where the reference matches the incoming email subject line What is the best way to approach this? I really don't want to have to write a POP3 client from scratch, but I need to be able to customize the processing of emails. Ideally I would be able to plug in some component that does the access and retrieval for me, returning arrays of attachments, body text, subject line, etc. ready for my processing... [ UPDATE: Reviews ] OK, so I have spent a fair amount of time looking into (mainly free) .NET POP3 libraries so I thought I'd provide a short review of some of those mentioned below and a few others: Pop3.net - free - works OK, very basic in terms of functionality provided. This is pretty much just the POP3 commands and some base64 encoding, but it's very straight forward - probably a good introduction Pop3 Wizard - commercial / some open source code - couldn't get this to build, missing DLLs, I wouldn't bother with this C#Mail - free - works well, comes with Mime parser and SMTP client, however the comments are in Japanese (not a big deal) and it didn't work with SSL 'out of the box' - I had to change the SslStream constructor after which it worked no problem OpenPOP - free - hasn't been updated for about 5 years so it's current state is .NET 1.0, doesn't support SSL but that was no problem to resolve - I just replaced the existing stream with an SslStream and it worked. Comes with Mime parser. Of the free libraries, I'd go for C#Mail or OpenPOP. I looked at a few commercial libraries: Chillkat, Rebex, RemObjects, JMail.net. Based on features, price and impression of the company I would probably go for Rebex and may in the future if my requirements change or I run into production issues with either of C#Mail or OpenPOP. • Problem running android HelloTabWidget example - NullPointerException on addTab()

  I've tried the Tab Layout example, and I've also fixed the few typos in the example (and added all the activities to the manifest). However, when I run it on the emulator I get a NullPointerException on the first line that says tabHost.addTab(spec); So my question, of course, is. What is wrong with the example that would cause this exception? I'm using Eclipse Galileo and set the target package as Android 1.5.
