• Error with APE Server Installation

  I was trying to install APE-Server from the .deb file at the ape-server homepage (www.ape-project.org) and I ran into an error so wanted to try removing the installation and reinstalling. I did a sudo apt-get remove ape-server which ran successfully but left ape-server folders in my /etc/ and /etc/init.d locations. Me being an idiot new comer to linux decided that manually delete those folders. Now when I reinstall the ape-server those folders don't get recreated and therefore I cannot send the /etc/init.d/ape-server [option] command because the folder is not found. When I try to sudo apt-get purge (or remove) ape-server I get the following sudo apt-get purge ape-server Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: ape-server* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 92 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. • Black screen appears when booting new install of 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

• Connecting a Samsung Galaxy S3 in Ubuntu 13.04

  In 13.04, whenever I connect an Android device, one of three things happens: 1 . It mounts successfully (maybe once out of 3 attempts) 2 . It fails to mount with the following error message: Oops! Something went wrong. Unhandled error message: Unable to open MTP device 3 . This one occasionally happens: Unhandled error message: No such interface `org.gtk.vfs.Mount' on object at path /org/gtk/vfs/mount/1 Regardless of activity (even when successfully mounted) it will continuously spam the following error message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG_Android Unable to open MTP Device '[usb:003,00x]' where x seems to be an arbitrary number below 10 and continues counting up with each new error message until the device is unplugged. I've also just noticed that even if it mounts successfully, it unmounts after about 30 seconds and starts spamming the error message above. The Android device is unlocked, always on and fully charged. ADB seems to function normally. Any suggestions? Further info: this happens on both a stock Samsung S3 and an Xperia Arc S running a custom AOSP based ROM. I've also tried the steps outlined in this Stack Overflow answer, but the problem persists. UPDATE: After doing a dist-upgrade (May 8th 2013), the Xperia Arc S on AOSP ROM now mounts and behaves normally. The S3, however, still behaves as described above. UPDATE: After careful observation, ABD does not, in fact, behave normally. If the error message above appears while sending an app to the device, the attempt is aborted with an error message saying that the device is unavailable.

• What extra packages are needed by Amarok to transcode to MP3?

  I'm using Amarok 2.6.0, on KDE version 4.9.3, on Kubuntu 12.04. I would like to be able to copy my music onto my MP3 player (in this case, my iPhone 3), but to transcode the tracks as I copy them over. However, when I right-click on the selected track, and choose "Copy to Collection" and select my iPhone, the option to transcode to MP3 is greyed out. What additional packages does Amarok need in order to enable the transcode to MP3 option? • Netbook performs hard shutdown without warning on low battery power

  My Asus EEE netbook performs a hard shutdown when it reaches low battery power, without giving any warning - i.e. the power just goes off, without any shutdown process. I can't find anything in the syslog, and no error messages are printed before it happens. I've had this problem on previous (K)Ubuntu versions, and hoped updating to Ubuntu Precise would help resolve the issue, but it hasn't. The option in the Power application for "when power is critically low" is currently blank - the only options are a (grayed-out) hibernate and "Power off". I have re-installed indicator-power to no effect. The time remaining reported by acpi is unstable, as is the time remaining reported by gnome-power-statistics. (For example, running acpi twice in succession, I got 2h16min, and then 3h21min remaining. These sorts of jumps in the remaining time are also in the gnome-power-statistics graphs.) It might be possible to write a script to give me advance warning (as per @RanRag's comment below), but I would prefer to isolate why I don't get a critical battery notification from the system before this happens, so that I can take action as appropriate (suspend/shutdown/plug in power) when I get a notification. • Second monitor not detected

  Note: I've seen this question quite a lot, but in all the cases I could find with answers, the answer was either "I don't know" or "use nvidia-settings (which is irrelevant to me)." I'm using Intel Sandybridge Desktop graphics, with a P8H61-M LE motherboard. How do I get Ubuntu to detect my second monitor? Clicking "Detect Displays" here doesn't do anything. • Why does my browser take me to Scour.com? (redirect virus)

  The "scour" or Rootkit.Win32.TDSS virus has a long history which can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scour Here is the primary symptom: after searching for something in your web browser using google, one of the results that you click on redirects you to scour.com. If you've executed ClamWin, Malwarebytes, McAfee, Norton, etc. to find and isolate the virus without any luck--this isn't really a surprise, since this virus attaches to existing system drivers. I only know of one reliable package that will remove this without ill effects--like adding new spyware. This package is called TDSSKiller. I have seen multiple websites that claim to have this software available, but the one that I know is reliable is located here: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 Once you go to Kaspersky's tech support site, the TDSSKiller zip file is available for downloading. When you execute this software, you will be able to "cure" or repair the infected driver. Remember to jot down the name of the driver for future reference--should you need to reinstall the driver from a "same-as" working computer, or your install disk if the repair is ineffective. The driver that happened to get infected on my computer was the tcpip.sys driver. This caused my win sockets to loose their ip addresses. In most other instances, less critical drivers such as HDAudBus.sys are infected. In my case, I was not through correcting my computer problems until I corrected the broken WinSock issue and loaded an earlier version of the tcpip.sys driver from: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 which I placed in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers Don't forget to reboot your computer after your repair! Once you download TDSSKiller and cure/repair your infected driver(s), the redirect on google searches should disappear .

The service bus console allows you to view the content that you reported. To report data you simply use the Report action in your proxy. The action itself is rather straightforward. You specify the content to report ($body for example), an optional key for easier search (for example the id of the record) and that's it. Sometimes though, what you want to is a bit more complicated. I recently had a case where the key was built from the message type (XML) and the id of the message. Seems quite simple but the id could be any element anywhere in the message depending on its type. This could be handled by 'if' statement but adding new cases would mean changing the proxy service and if you have lots of message types this can get boring so I wanted the solution to be as dynamic as possible (read "just change a configuration file and that's it"). The following entry details how you can make this dynamic in your proxy by using XQuery/XSLT.   First step the XQuery We're going to use an XQuery to make the mapping between the XML message type and the location of the identifier in it. • Starcraft II on Wine - Ubuntu 12.04

  I know this might seem like a repeat question, but I've literally looked over 100 threads on how to get SC2 to work on ubuntu 12.04 through wine and none have worked. I downloaded wine new today, and inserted my purchased SC2 disk. When I try to open the installer (installer.exe) with wine, an error appear saying: "No installer data could be found. If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support." I searched for solutions to mediate this issue and was directed to the following source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1435314 . I followed directions through until I got to ls I tried various combinations of (ls installer.exe, ls'/home/rothic/Desktop/Installer.exe, etc.) All come back with "no such file or directory". Im not sure what to do, the next step would be to replace the "starcraft_installer" with the starcraft installer file, which Im not sure how to do (very new to linux). I tried WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_starcraft/ wine starcraft_installer and it says "wine: cannot find L"C:\windows\system32\starcraft_installer.exe" despite it being on the desktop as advised. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

• Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web ICT: second draft published from WCAG2ICT Task Force - for public review

  Last Thursday the W3C published an updated Working Draft of Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies. As I noted last July when the first draft was published, the motivation for this guidance comes from the Section 508 refresh draft, and also the European Mandate 376 draft, both of which seek to apply the WCAG 2.0 level A and AA Success Criteria to non-web ICT documents and software. This second Working Draft represents a major step forward in harmonization with the December 5th, 2012 Mandate 376 draft documents, including specifically Draft EN 301549 "European accessibility requirements for public procurement of ICT products and services". This work greatly increases the likelihood of harmonization between the European and American technical standards for accessibility, for web sites and web applications, non-web documents, and non-web software. As I noted last October at the European Policy Centre event: "The Accessibility Act – Ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and again last month at the follow-up EPC event: "Accessibility - From European challenge to global opportunity", "There isn't a 'German Macular Degernation', a 'French Cerebral Palsy', an 'American Autism Spectrum Disorder'. Disabilities are part of the human condition. They’re not unique to any one country or geography – just like ICT. Even the built environment – phones, trains and cars – is the same worldwide. The definition of ‘accessible’ should be global – and the solutions should be too. Harmonization should be global, and not just EU-wide. It doesn’t make sense for the EU to have a different definition to the US or Japan." With these latest drafts from the W3C and Mandate 376 team, we've moved a major step forward toward that goal of a global "definition of 'accessible' ICT." I strongly encourage all interested parties to read the Call for Review, and to submit comments during the current review period, which runs through 15 February 2013. • Bluetooth headset A2DP works, HSP/HFP not (no sound/no mic)

  My Philips SBH9001 headset pairs fine using Ubuntu 12.04. In the audio settings it's properly detected as A2DP device and as HSP/HFP device. Hardware: Thinkpad X230, Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, Kernel 3.6.0-030600rc3-generic (build from Ubuntu mainline repo), Bluetooth device is USB-Id 0a5c:21e6 from Broadcom, Headset is a Philips SBH9001. Note: Kernel 3.6 rc3 is used because of a fix for audio on the dockingstation that is not in any previous branches. Playing audio in A2DP works just fine out of the box, but when switching the headset to HSP/HSP mode there is no sound nor does the microphone work.   Yesterday, One of my friend Dharmendra ask me that why C# does not support multiple inheritance. This is question most of the people ask every time. So I thought it will be good to write a blog post about it. So why it does not support multiple inheritance? I tried to dig into the problem and I have found the some of good links from C# team from Microsoft for why it’s not supported in it. Let me explain a bit. If you have class that is inherited from the more then one classes and If two classes have same signature function then for child class object, It is impossible to call specific parent class method.   Video in VLC or SMplayer is often in black and white with washed-out colors in the wrong place (translated considerably). Moreover, the last video image is often visible when a new video is started and persist as long as the new video is running. Colors have a recognizable shape (e.g. a persons clothes or face), but can be obviously incorrect (e.g. green or purples faces). This is independent of the format of the videos (mp4, mkv, wmv). Sometimes all problems disappear when a new video is started, but often only a reboot restores normal video. Ubuntu was upgraded to 14.04 and is fully updated. • Pluscom MAC address shows up but "wireless unavailable"

• Using OData to get Mix10 files

  There has been a lot of talk around OData lately (go to odata.org for more information) and I wanted to get all the videos from Mix ‘10: two great tastes that taste great together. Luckily, Mix has exposed the ‘10 sessions via OData at http://api.visitmix.com/OData.svc, now all I have to do is slap together a bit of code to fetch the videos. Step 1 (cut a hole in the box) Create a new console application and add a new service reference.   Part 1 - Listing Data from Database: Let us now learn ASP.NET MVC 2 from Scratch by actually developing a front end website for the Chinook database, which is an alternative to the traditional Northwind database. You can get the Chinook database from here. As always the best way to learn something is by working on it and doing something. The Chinook database has the following schema, a quick look will help us implementing the application in a efficient way. Let us first implement a grid view table with the list of Employees with some details, this table also has the Details, Edit and Delete buttons on it to do some operations. This is series of post will concentrate on creating a simple CRUD front end for Chinook DB using ASP.NET MVC 2. In this post, we will look at listing all the possible Employees in the database in a tabular format, from which, we can then edit and delete them as required. In this post, we will concentrate on setting up our environment and then just designing a page to show a tabular information from the database. We need to first setup the SQL Server database, you can download the required version and then set it up in your localhost. Then we need to add the LINQ to SQL Classes required for us to enable interaction with our database. Now after you do the above step, just use your Server Explorer in VS 2010 to actually navigate to the database, expand the tables node and then drag drop all the tables onto the Object Relational Designer space and you go you will have the tables visualized as classes. As simple as that. Now for the purpose of displaying the data from Employee in a table, we will show only the EmployeeID, Firstname and lastname. So let us create a class to hold this information. So let us add a new class called EmployeeList to the ViewModels. So once we specify this and compile the project. Here we are adding the id=”links” to the hyperlinks that is created in the page. In the index.aspx page, we add some jQuery stuff add alternate row colours and highlight colours for rows on mouse over. Now the Controller that handles the requests and directs the request to the right view.
