• Confused about Ajax, Basic XMLHTTPRequest

  I'm confused about the basics of Ajax. Right now I'm just trying to build a basic Ajax request using plain JavaScript to better understand how things work (as opposed to using Jquery or another library). First off, do you always need to pass a parameter or can you just retrieve data? In its most basic form, could I have an html document (located on the same server) that just has plain text, and another html document retrieve that text and load it on to the page? So I have fox.html with just text that says "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." and I want to pull in that text into ajax.html on load. • AS3 TextField - unwanted carriage return when setting value to ""

  I have an input TextField and have a KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN even listener on the stage to listen for the Keyboard.ENTER event. The event listener adds the entered text to an array or whatever, and then clears the TextField. The problem is that when the Enter key event fires and the TextField value is set to "", it leaves a carriage return in the TextField and the cursor positioned on the second line. WTF? I've been coding AS2 and AS3 for a LONG time and have never ran into this before. Am I losing my mind? • Using Javascript to flip flop a textbox's readonly flag

  I have a frame with several radio buttons where the user is supposed to select the "Category" that his Occupation falls into and then unconditionally also specify his occupation. If the user selects "Retired", the requirement is to prefill "Retired" in the "Specify Occupation" text box and to disable it to prevent it from being changed. The Specify Occupation text box should also no longer be a tab stop. If the user selects a radio button other than Retired the Specify Occupation text box should be enabled and once again in the normal tab sequence. Originally, I was setting and clearing the disabled property on the Specify occupation textbox, then I found out that, upon submitting the form, disabled fields are excluded from the submit and the REQUIRED validator on the Specify Occupation textbox was being raised because the textbox was being blanked out. What is the best way to solve this? My approach below was to mimic a disabled text box by setting/resetting the readonly attribute on the text box and changing the background color to make it appear disabled. (I suppose I should be changing the forecolor instead of teh background color). • Colour manipulation of custom tags in niceEdit HTML editor ( JS / DOM )

  Hi, I would like to be able to highlight, during typing and in real time, certain custom tags in the format #tag_name# within the text of a nicEdit instance ( http://nicedit.com/ ). My current attempt to implement as close to this as possible revolves around using the blur event of the editor to highlight the tags once the editor loses focus. Obviously I could remove the spans before saving the text but the whole system is currently open to errors ( If the html is directly edited then other text may get highlighted etc ). What I would like to know is.. Is there any way to directly change the colour of the tags in the editor or DOM without using a mechanism such as this? Perhaps a way of colouring the text in memory rather than changing the HTML ? Any ideas ? Regards Chris P

  Hello. I've got a really difficult bug and I can't see the fix. The subject drives me insane for real for a long time. Let's consider the following scenario: 1) There is a PowerPoint 2003 presentation. It contains the only slide and the only shape, but the shape contains a text frame including a bulleted list with a random textual representation structure. 2) There is a requirement to get bullet indents for every bulletted paragraph using PowerPoint 2007. • Why does the Chrome spacing work in one JS file and not the other?

  If you highlight and copy the text in the first paragraph on this page, then paste it into a rich text editor (dreamweaver or gmail in rich text mode), you will see that some of the text is automagically linked. • C#, WPF. Length of string that will fit in a specific width.

  Hi, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, I have an area in which I intend to draw text. I know its (the area) height and width. I wish to know how many characters/Words will fit in the width, characters preferably. Second question, If the line is too long I'll want to draw a second line, so I guess I need to get the height of the text as well, including what ever it considers the right vertical padding? I'd also rather like to know the inverse, i.e. how many characters I can fit in a specific width. I assume the fact that WPF isn't constrained to pixels will have some bearing on the answer? Ultimately I'm planning on wrapping text around irregular shaped images embedded in the text. Any pointers in the right direction would be great. Thanks

  In writing functions my brain always spends a few milliseconds to check which order of parameters would be best for a given function. should I write: public Comment AddComment(long userID, string title, string text) Or probably: public Comment AddComment(string title, string text, long userID) Why not: public Comment AddComment(string title, long userID, string text) Do you follow any rules when ordering the parameters for your functions? Which parameter would you place first and which would follow?

• MySQL BinLog Statement Retrieval

  I have seven 1G MySQL binlog files that I have to use to retrieve some "lost" information. I only need to get certain INSERT statements from the log (ex. where the statement starts with "INSERT INTO table SET field1="). If I just run a mysqlbinlog (even if per database and with using --short-form), I get a text file that is several hundred megabytes, which makes it almost impossible to then parse with any other program. Is there a way to just retrieve certain sql statements from the log? I don't need any of the ancillary information (timestamps, autoincrement #s, etc.). I just need a list of sql statements that match a certain string. Ideally, I would like to have a text file that just lists those sql statements, such as: INSERT INTO table SET field1='a'; INSERT INTO table SET field1='tommy'; INSERT INTO table SET field1='2'; I could get that by running mysqlbinlog to a text file and then parsing the results based upon a string, but the text file is way too big. It just times out any script I run and even makes it impossible to open in a text editor. Thanks for your help in advance.

• Controlling the scope of a document.write call coming from a third party

  Dear all, I'm writing a webpage that relies on an external javascript file (that I have no control of), which returns data by using document.write's. Is there any way to dynamically call the function without it overwriting the whole document? • Problems with contenteditable in Firefox

  Hello, I am working on a Javascript WYSIWYG editor in Firefox. I am using a div with the contenteditable attribute set to true in order to accomplish this (I cannot use a contenteditable iframe for this particular project). This contenteditable div is nested in another div that is not contenteditable. I am encountering the following two problems when using execCommand to apply formatting, including font style and size, as well as bold, italic, and underline: When all text in the div is selected, execCommand simply does not work. execCommand works fine when only part of the text is selected, but does nothing when all of the text is selected. Applying formatting with no text selected yields unexpected results. For example, when calling execCommand('bold') with no text selected and then typing results in bold text being typed until a spacebar is inserted, at which point the bold formatting is lost (until another space is inserted, interestingly enough; then the text becomes bold again). To see what I mean, please try running the following HTML code in Firefox 3: <html> <head><title></title></head> <body> <button onClick="execCommand('bold', false, null);">Bold</button> <div style="width: 300px; border: 1px solid #000000;"> <div contenteditable="true">Some editable text</div> </div> </body> </html> Please try the following: Select the word "Some" only. Click the Bold button. This will make the text bold, as expected. Select the entire phrase "Some editable text" (either manually or using CTRL-A). Click the Bold button. Nothing happens. This demonstrates the first bug shown above. Hit the backspace key to clear the div. Click the Bold button and begin typing. Type a few words with spaces. This will demonstrate the second bug. Any ideas on what could be causing these problems and how to work around them would be greatly appreciated!

  Hi, using LyX I'm trying to convert the "comments" into "marginal notes". I tried several things but without luck. Like in this image: IMAGE MARGINAL NOTE I searched a lot trying to find how to solve this but without luck. I found the explanation of what is happening: Unexpected Output Only one character is in the new font You thought you changed font over a selection of text, but only the first character has come out in the new font. You have most probably used a command instead of a declaration. The command should take the text as its argument. If you don't group the text, only the first character will be passed as the argument. • Getting proper indentation using XMLBuilder in a helper

  I'm attempting to use a view helper to create some dynamic links based on if you're logged in or not. What I want returned, for sake of easy code readability, is: <ul class="right"> <li><a href="#">Login</a></li> <li><a href="#">Register</a></li> </ul> In the view helper I have this Ruby code: def loginh xm = Builder::XmlMarkup.new(:indent=>2, :margin=>4) xm.ul("class" => "right") { xm.li('class' => 'text') { xm.text("test") } } end In the view, the line that calls login helper is already indented 4 levels. Because of this, the first line gets 'skewed', so in the view I have: <%= loginh %> Which results in: <ul class="right"> <li class="text"> <text>test</text> </li> </ul> You can see it works perfectly, except for the first line. It would appear that the first line is affected by the indent before <%= loginh % is called. I can easily remedy this by removing the indentation prior to <%= loginh % - but in essence I'd be sacrificing code readability for markup readability. Which isn't what I'm looking to do. Is there any way I could remove the beginning whitespace?
