  • Service Layer which can switch between Web Service Layer and Data Access Layer

    - by Blake Blackwell
I am building an application that will function as a client-server application, and also as a disconnected client application. I will be using WPF (browser app for client-server application). When interacting with the server's database, I will need to connect using WCF web services. When connecting with the localized database, I will need to connect using the local db's data access layer. What methods/patterns exist for this sort of architecture?

  • recommendation systems and the cold start problem

    - by Hellnar
Hello, I am curious what are the methods / approaches to overcome the "cold start" problem where when a new user or an item enters the system, due to lack of info about this new entity, making recommendation is a problem. I can think of doing some prediction based recommendation (like gender, nationality and so on). Thanks

  • Apache 2.4 and PHP 5.4 getting connection reset errors in the browser

    - by zuallauz
In the weekend I upgraded my development web server to Apache 2.4 and PHP 5.4. In my web application which was previously working great on Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.3 it now starts getting these messages saying the "connection was reset" in Firefox. See screenshot. I am connecting to the linux machine via local LAN. I'm assuming it might be something to do with the new version of Apache or PHP, or the new LAMP stack which I downloaded from BitNami? It would seem to happen every 5-10 requests and throw this error, perhaps more likely to trigger it is if I send a POST request from a page. Is it timing out the script or something? These are just basic dynamic pages I'm loading and they worked perfectly in Apache 2.2 and PHP5.3. Here are my httpd.conf and PHP.ini if that has any clues. Any ideas? Any help much appreciated.

  • Auto-generating toString Method

    - by Gordon
    Is it good or bad practice auto-generating toString methods for some simple classes? I was thinking of generating something like bellow where it takes the variable names and produces a toString method that prints the name followed by it's value. private String name; private int age; private double height; public String toString(){ Formatter formatter = new Formatter(); return formatter.format("Name: %s, Age: %d, Height %f", name, age, height).toString(); }

  • Fancybox force scroll to top

    - by Bradley Herman
I'm using the jQuery Fancybox plugin to display some content on a website. Unfortunately, when a link is clicked, the lightbox that is loaded starts at the same scroll position as the previous one. I tried using self.scrollTo(0,0) $.scrollTo(0) $('#top').scrollTo(); and a few others methods to push it back to the top, but none have seemed to work. Any help on this?

  • Older iPhone/ iPod frame rate?

    - by Adam
Do older iPods and iPhones have a frame rate of 60fps? I'm finding that all the methods for calculating time intervals on iPhone (cftimeinterval, nstimer, timesince1970, etc) are all giving me bad data, so I've decided assume a frame rate of 60, just not sure if older apple devices can run at this.

  • objective C NSString retain

    - by Amarsh
If I create a String with [NSString StringWithFormat], do I have to [retain] it? My understanding is that convenience methods add the objects to autorelease pool. If that is the case, shouldnt we retain the object so that it doesnt get drained with pool at the end of the event loop?

  • When can there be many Waves in a context on Google Wave

    - by Alan
In a Google Wave Robot, the event handler gets a Context object. One of the methods is GetWaves, that is documented as: """Returns the list of waves associated with this session.""" I am trying to understand when this would return more than one Wave. What are the situations where there is more than one Wave associated with the session/context?

  • What are the differences and similarities between the .NET languages?

    - by froadie
I'm trying to figure out how much overlap there is between the different languages of the .NET framework, and what the real differences are. Is there an overlap of libraries/methods/functions...? If I'm googling a question for, say, VB .NET, and C# answers come up, what can I take from the C#-relevant info and what differences/incompatibilities should I look out for?

  • Java declarations (ordering)

    - by incrediman
In Java, what's generally the most accepted way to organize a class in terms of the order in which declared data members and methods should be listed in the class file, keeping in mind the following and anything else you can think of for each one: its visibility whether it's a constructor, method, or member if it's a method, does it overload, or override other method(s)?

  • Windows redirect traffic to different DNS name not fixed IP address (hosts file equivalent)

    - by Arik Raffael Funke
Using the Windows hosts file, one can redirect traffic for a domain to a specific IP address, e.g. domainA.com -- 127.0.0.1 I am looking for a SIMPLE way to do the same, but for a target domain name not for a target IP address (as this is dynamic), I.e. domainA.com -- domainB.com Addition: After the getting some initial answers I think I need to concretise my question. Situation: I have an application which looks up the IP of the target domain via DNS and then connects via HTTP to the IP address. I do not have control over any proxy settings. Option 1 Basically I am looking for a way to: intercept DNS requests for a domainA.com launch a DNS request for a domainB.com serve the IP of domainB.com in response to the request for domainA.com Without running an entire DNS server. Option 2 If a DNS server is the only way, in the alternative I would also be happy with an solution to how to define a non-standard DNS-server for a single application. Any ideas for wrapper applications, etc?

  • Filtering out page content with AJAX in Sitecore

    - by RaYell
I have a page in Sitecore that displays the list of clients. There's a form with two select boxes that should filter out clients not matching specified criterias. Clients list should be refreshed via AJAX everytime user changes one of the values in the form or after clicking Submit button if JS is disabled. What is the suggested approach I should take to have this working in Sitecore? I'm not sure about Sitecore part, I know how to call AJAX methods/

  • Create a UIView Subclass that calls a delegate function whenever it's parent viewController appears?

    - by Andrew Johnson
UIViewControllers have viewWillAppear, viewDidDisappear, etc. delegate methods. I would like to create a UIView subclass that can be added to a viewController's view, and when that UIViewController apears or disappears, a delegate function is called. I could easily do this by putting function calls in the UIViewController viewWillAppear/viewWillDisappear delegate functions, but how can I encapsulate this behavior in the UIView?

  • Prevent backslash from being parsed by javascript for a string

    - by user286269
A Flash AS3 IRC application sends me a string like "f\reak" to my javascript. Irc allows the \ in usernames which poses a problem when its passed to javascript. "f\reak" become "feak" in javascript making the \r into a carriage return. Is there a way to read the absolute value of the string instead of parsing a carriage return? These don't methods didn't work str.valueOf() str.toString() str.charAt(position of the \ ) this just sees the carriage return as well and not a backslash

  • Testing Rails Metal With Cucumber/rSpec

    - by nkabbara
Hi, I'm trying to stub a third party service that my metal talks to. It seems rspec mocks/stubs don't extend all the way to the Metal. When I call stubbed methods on objects, it calls the original one and not the stubbed one. Any idea of how I can have rSpec doubles extend all the way to the metal? Thanks. -Nash

  • How to make numbered chapter titles and paragraph headers in iWork Pages 09?

    - by dyve
For most of my document writing I use iWork Pages (from iWork '09), and it's usually fine for me. I don't miss Microsoft Word, except for one simple feature: the ability to number chapter titles and paragraph headers for easy reference in the contents of the document and for cross references. Somehow, I cannot find this feature in Pages '09. It is possible to number headers by setting the style to numbered, but it doesn't mitigate well into the generated dynamic contents, and paragraphs don't follow the numbering of higher level elements it seems. Does anyone know how to make this work?
