• Google App Engine with Java - Error running javac.exe compiler

  On Windows XP Just downloaed and unzipped google app engine java sdk to C:\Program Files\appengine-java-sdk I have jdk installed in C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_20. I ran the sample application by appengine-java-sdk\bin\dev_appserver.cmd appengine-java-sdk\demos\guestbook\war Then I visited localhost:8080 to find : HTTP ERROR 500 Problem accessing /. Reason: Error running javac.exe compiler Caused by: Error running javac.exe compiler at org.apache.tools.ant.taskdefs.compilers.DefaultCompilerAdapter.executeExternalCompile(DefaultCompilerAdapter.java:473) How to Fix it? My JAVA_HOME points to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_20. I also tried chaning my appcfg.cmd to : @"C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_20\bin\java" -cp "%~dp0..\lib\appengine-tools-api.jar" com.google.appengine.tools.admin.AppCfg %* It too didn't work.

• ClickOnce: The required version of the .NET Framework is not installed on this computer

  I have been getting the error "The required version of the .NET Framework is not installed on this computer." (Event Id 4096 in Event log) when trying to install a VSTO application from both a ClickOnce deployment and a local copy. This is interesting as the .NET framework is installed (on my 32bit Windows 7 PC) and the VSTO application was developed on the self same machine (and works in Visual Studio 2008). Does anybody has an idea why I could get this exception? • REST api ambiguity and WADL

  I have a REST api that's ambiguous, something like (this isn't the specific problem, just gives an idea of the ambiguity): /toplevel/${customer_number}/some_command/more stuff /toplevel/${customer_number}/${some_product_name_anything_goes}/more stuff We've been getting away with it because our .htaccess file lists the more specific 'command' form before the general ${product_name} version, and the first match wins. Now though, we're writing a WADL, and, as you might expect, we're having trouble with our chosen tool consuming the WADL, because the API is ambiguous. My questions are: a) Does the WADL spec speak to whether they can validly represent ambiguous APIs? b) Tool support - in your experience, do tools choke on ambiguous WADLs? (if ambi. WADLs are allowed then those are weak tools but, you'd want to be on the safe side) c) Just any experience with ambiguous REST apis, most especially wrt WADLs, really. For the curious, here's the latest spec: As far as I can tell it doesn't specifically address this, I guess it really comes down to how tools handle it. Thanks.

• GCC without Xcode on OS X

  I've just unwrapped my new MacBook Pro (yay!) and am now setting it up properly for development. Since I want to avoid clutter, I'm wondering if I really need to install the Xcode tools at all (I never use the IDE or Mac specific tools), since I'll install a newer version of GCC anyway, using MacPorts. So, is there any benefit in installing Xcode? Is it necessary? What kind of set-up does it do behind the scenes? Basically: can I skip this or will it come back to haunt me because some Unix development tools just assume that OS X is always set up in this way?

Title: Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt Command: cmd.exe Arguments: %comspec% /k ""C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\vcvarsall.bat"" x86 Initial Directory: $(ProjectDir) Then OK/Apply: After this when I went to Tools Menu and click on Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt, command prompt open but got the following error message: '"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\vcvarsall.bat"' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. • Visual C# GUI Designer basic tutorial

  Hi, can you recommend a Visual C# Form Designer tutorial that is targeted at experienced programmers who have at least a basic knowledge of C# but are new to the VS C# Form Designer. At least it shouldn't be targeted at programming newbs, like Introduction to Visual C# 2008 Express Edition (it explains how a comment looks like in C#). So far I've found C# Programming Tutorial - Programming Winforms in C# on stackoverflow. Wishlist: ;-) I'm more interested in focus on the designer itself rather than an explanation of single gui-elements. In other words explaining separation between generated-code, what to not edit manually (visual-c#-designer-responsibility) and on the other hand the parts for which the programmer himself is responsible. So a little more abstract best-practice point of view pointing out some caveats would be great as well. I would prefer text over video as well, but that's minor. /Wishlist Perhaps even a Microsoft reference specific to the Visual c# forms designer (which I seem to have been unable to find) would be helpful.

• I never really understood: what is CGI?

  CGI is a Comman Gateway Interface. As the name says, it is a "common" gateway interface for everything. It is so trivial and naive from the name. I feel that I understood this and I felt this every time I encountered this word. But frankly, I didn't. I'm still confused. I am a PHP programmer. I did lot of web development. user (client) request for page --- webserver(-embedded PHP interpreter) ---- Server side(PHP) Script --- MySQL Server. Now say my PHP Script can fetch results from MySQL Server && MATLAB Server && Some other server. So, now PHP Script is the CGI? because its interface for the between webserver & All other servers? I don't know. Sometimes they call CGI, a technology & othertimes they call CGI a program or someother server. What exactly is CGI? Whats the big deal with /cgi-bin/*.cgi? Whats up with this? I don't know what is this cgi-bin directory on the server for. I don't know why they have *.cgi extensions. Why does Perl always comes in the way. CGI & Perl (language). I also don't know whats up with these two. Almost all the time I keep hearing these two in combination "CGI & Perl". This book is another great example CGI Programming with Perl Why not "CGI Programming with PHP/JSP/ASP". I never saw such things. CGI Programming in C this confuses me a lot. in C?? Seriously?? I don't know what to say. I"m just confused. "in C"?? This changes everything. Program needs to be compiled and executed. This entirely changes my view of web programming. When do I compile? How does the program gets executed (because it will be a machine code, so it must execute as a independent process). How does it communicate with the web server? IPC? and interfacing with all the servers (in my example MATLAB & MySQL) using socket programming? I'm lost!! They say that CGI is depreciated. Its no more in use. Is it so? What is its latest update? Once, I ran into a situation where I had to give HTTP PUT request access to web server (Apache HTTPD). Its a long back. So, as far as I remember this is what I did: Edited the configuration file of Apache HTTPD to tell webserver to pass all HTTP PUT requests to some put.php ( I had to write this PHP script) Implement put.php to handle the request (save the file to the location mentioned) People said that I wrote a CGI Script. Seriously, I didn't have clue what they were talking about. Did I really write CGI Script? I hope you understood what my confusion is. (Because I myself don't know where I'm confused). I request you guys to keep your answer as simple as possible. I really can't understand any fancy technical terminology. At least not in this case. EDIT: I found this amazing tutorial "CGI Programming Is Simple!" - CGI Tutorial Which explains the concepts in simplest possible way. I've only have one complaint about this tutorial. Just to make what ever he explained complete he should have shown the C code he used for generating response for those GET / POST requests. • Is there any er diagram tool in Windows that I can use to connect to a MySQL 4.1 database in Unix?

  I have a few test databases in some Unix SUSE 8 servers and initially the plan was to find some tools which can directly create the ERD straight from the server until someone told me that I can find tools to connect from the Windows PC straight to the Unix MySQL database. So I saw MySQL query analyzer which can do this but unfortunately there are no options to create an ERD. So are there any tools, preferably open source or free which can do this? I've done some basic googling but didn't know what is the exact terms to use to search for this and have so far found nothing useful yet. Updates: I just found out that the latest version of workbench doesn't work MySQL 4.1 Enterprise Edition which is the version that I have! And I try to use fabFORCE DBDesigner but I can't even connect at all using that one :( What can work for this version of MySQL?

I've been wondering what makes the programming community so prone to helping others in stackoverflow. Is this something particular to programmers? Do you think lawyers and accountants would help other lawyers and programmers as we do? What makes you come back to stackoverflow every day? It would be great to have an answer per reason so that we can get the list of reasons. In my case, I come to stackoverflow to ask questions that I can't solve quickly, and to test how good I am when answering questions. So far I’ve failed miserably at trying to answer questions but it has helped me understand how little I know.

• Visual VoiceXML/VXML development tool?

  Hi, all. Does anyone know of any tools out there that will let me run and debug a VXML application visually? There are a ton of VXML development tools, but they all require you to build your application within them. I have an existing application that uses JSPs to generate VXML, and I'm looking for a way to navigate through and debug the rendered VXML in much the same way that Firebug allows one to do this with HTML. I have some proxy-like tools that let me inspect the rendered code as it is sent to the VXML browser, but there's a ton of JS, which makes traversing the code by hand rather difficult. Has anyone worked with a product that allows for this? Thanks! IVR Avenger

  Sadly, a project that I have been working on lately has a large amount of copy-and-paste code, even within single files. Are there any tools or techniques that can detect duplication or near-duplication within a single file? I have Beyond Compare 3 and it works well for comparing separate files, but I am at a loss for comparing single files. Thanks in advance. Edit: Thanks for all the great tools! This project is an ASP.NET/C# project, but I work with a variety of languages including Java; I'm interested in what tools are best (for any language) to remove duplication.

• Uses of Erlang in Telecom

  I'm a web developer and a college student majoring in telecommunications. This means I'm decent at programming and I know a little about telecom networks (at a high, non-technical level). I keep reading that Erlang is used all over the telecom industry (supposedly for its performance). I'm wondering if there's anyway I can combine my programming skills with my telecommunications major with Erlang. Is most of the Erlang/telecom stuff closed source? Are there any open source telecom projects written Erlang? UPDATE: sipwiz's comment makes me think in terms of a question larger than "uses of Erlang". How can I leverage a high-level understanding of telecom networks and the telecom regulatory environment with programming. I hope this hasn't veered too off-topic for SO.

• My app has some basic problems, and it stops working

  I am writing a basic application which contains two activities. Both contain a TextView showing the title and the first one contains an EditText in which the user types a message and clicks on a button on its side, the second activity is launched which shows the message the user types. It has the following problems: The title (the first TextView in both the activities) doesn't show in the middle of the line, despite of the android:gravity="center_horizontal" attribute. The EditText in the first activity does not show at all. When I click on the button, the app stops saying "Unfortunately Write n Display and stopped.", rather than launching the second activity at all. I don't have adequate knowledge about logcat, but I have followed the steps somebody had told me, that is WindowOpen Perspective Other DDMS Then run the app and select the package name from the Devices and click on log cat, select the exception(s) and export to text file.   When creating an WPF application with the MVVM pattern, it seems I have to gather the necessary tools myself to even begin the most rudimentary event handling, e.g. AttachedBehaviors I get from here DelegateCommands I get from here Now I'm looking for some way to handle the ItemSelected event in a ComboBox and am getting suggestions of tricks and workarounds to do this (using a XAML trigger or have other elements bound to the selected item, etc.). Ok, I can go down this road, but it seems to be reinventing the wheel. It would be nice to just have an ItemSelected command that I can handle in my ViewModel. Am I missing some set of standard tools or is everyone doing MVVM with WPF basically building and putting together their own collection of tools just so they can do the simplest plumbing tasks with events and commands, things that take only a couple lines in code-behind with a Click="eventHandler"?

I've installed Ubuntu on my system but have no exposure to shell scripting. I need some advice on how I can quickly learn to use the Linux terminal quickly. Any books or web resources that you can suggest? Also, is there a particular IDE that is generally preferred for Python programming on Linux, or is Vim preferred? • How well are SVG filter elements defined?

  We are considering using SVG filters as part of our toolchain, serving the SVG to browsers capable of supporting it, while serving pre-rendered PNGs to other. One problem we noticed is that the rendering of the filter chains seems to be very inconsistent across renderers. When looking at the "filters01" example from the SVG specification, the rendering looks very different across the tools we tried. Chrome (5.0.307.11) failed to render the image, while other tools (Firefox 3.6, Opera 10.10, Inkscape 0.47, GIMP 2.6.7) render something vaguely similar in style to the picture in the specification, but no two are truly the same. Is that an issue of under-specification or are the tools just not there? If we would use SVG with filter effects: is there a reference tool that can give us a rendering the way it is intended by the spec?

• How does a virtual machine work?

  I've been looking into how programming languages work, and some of them have a so-called virtual machines. I understand that this is some form of emulation of the programming language within another programming language, and that it works like how a compiled language would be executed, with a stack. Did I get that right? With the proviso that I did, what bamboozles me is that many non-compiled languages allow variables with "liberal" type systems. In Python for example, I can write this: x = "Hello world!" x = 2**1000 Strings and big integers are completely unrelated and occupy different amounts of space in memory, so how can this code even be represented in a stack-based environment? What exactly happens here? Is x pointed to a new place on the stack and the old string data left unreferenced? Do these languages not use a stack? If not, how do they represent variables internally?

• How do I check out Eclipse projects from CVS using the command line

  Hi. I'm trying to check out the Mylyn project from Eclipse. However, I can't use Eclipse to check out the projects and am having to do it via the command line. I'm behind a firewall so am basing my attempt on http://wiki.eclipse.org/CVS_Howto#CVS_and_firewalls. I'm not very familiar with CVS. • Can't Install ADT. org.eclipse.wst.xml.ui is missing

  I am having trouble getting the Android Development Tools to install. I overcame one error involving the GEF. I now have a new error. Missing requirement: Android Development Tools 0.9.6.v201002051504-24846 (com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.feature.group 0.9.6.v201002051504-24846) requires 'org.eclipse.wst.xml.ui 0.0.0' but it could not be found I am running Kubuntu 9.10 and Eclipse 3.5. I have managed to get the Android DDMS to install. But I keep running into blocks with the Development Tools. I have the Android SDK installed. What do I need to do in order get the missing component?

• C++ to bytecode compiler for Silverlight CLR?

  I'd like to be able to compile a C/C++ library so that it runs within a safe managed runtime in the Silverlight CLR. There are several tools for doing this with the JVM that allows C++ code to run within a CRT emulation layer (see NestedVM, LLJVM, etc), which effectively allows C++ code to be run within a Java Applet. There's even a tool for this for the Adobe Flash VM (see Alchemy). However, I can't seem to find any tools like this for the CLR. fyi, the MSVC tools don't seem to allow for this: The /clr:pure flag will create C++ code that runs in the CLR, but it isn't safe (because the CRT isn't safe) and /clr:safe requires massive code changes (no native types, etc).

  Imagine like an 8-hour long video of any "typical/average" programming job. What is it like? Before I get myself involved in that path, what can I expect? I am interested in gathering first-hand information and accounts of the typical life of a programmer. My goal is to grasp the fundamental concepts of working in the professional field of programming. I just want to "see" into what it is/means to come to an entry-level programming job and program. See what kind of skills, mentality, expectations, and such are required.

• Best way to plan a task ?

  Hi All, As I am very new to programming, I am very curious about learning the best ways/practices of programming. Whenever I want to write any program , I strat directly with coding while some guys say that you should plan your program first before starting the code. But I don't understand the real value of creating the class diagrams and all that kind of stuff coz I think that ultimately I have to write the code. Can you guys please share your experiences about how you are doing your programming means what is your first step when you start an application.
