• Using IAM for user authentication

  I've read lots and lots of posts that touch on what I think should be a very common use case - but without finding exactly what I want, or a simple reason why it can't be done. I have some files on S3. I want to be able to grant certain users access to certain files, via a front end that I build. So far, I've made it work this way: I built the front end in Django, using it's built-in Users and Groups I have a model for Buckets, in which I mirror my S3 buckets. I have a m2m relationship from groups to buckets representing the S3 permissions. The user logs in and authenticates against Django's users. I grab from Django the list of buckets that the user is allowed to see I use boto to grab a list of links to files from those buckets and display to user. This works, but isn't ideal, and also just doesn't feel right. I've got to keep a mirror of the buckets, and I also have to maintain my own list of user/passwords and permissions, when AWS already has all that built in. What I really want is to simply create the users in IAM and use group permissions in IAM to control access to the S3 buckets. No duplication of data or function. My app would request a UN/PW from the user and use that to connect to IAM/S3 to pull the list of buckets and files, then display links to the user. Simple. How can I, or why can't I? Am I looking at this the wrong way? What's the "right" way to address this (I assume) very common use case?

• How to implement a category hierarchy using collections

  Hello, I have about 200 categories that are nested. I am currently reading the documention on the C5 generics library. I am not sure if the C5 library is overkill or not. I am looking at converting all my custom algorithms to the C5 implemention. This is what I need. If a certain category is chosen i need to find its parents, siblings, direct children, and all children. This is the way I have it set up. To find the: Parents: I start from the current location then loop through the list and find the current parent. When I find the parent I loop through the whole list again to find the next parent and so on. Siblings: I loop through the whole list and find all the nodes that have the same parent as the choosen node. direct children: I loop through the whole list and find all nodes that is a parent of the choosen node. All Children: This one took me a while to figure out. But I used recursion to find all children of the choosen node. Is there a better way to implement something like this?

• About Interview structure for test automation lab developers

  Hi, I am interviewing new applicants for a team that is doing test automation on our company product(s). The team is composed of junior software developers and a team leader. The product runs on windows and has both managed and unmanaged parts. The test automation is done on both client side (user mode and kernel mode) and server side (IIS, Windows Services, backend). We are doing mainly intergration tests and black box tests. I am trying to figure out how to organize my interview. My overall idea is to ask about a project they have done, then ask some technical questions (multithreading, GC, design patterns) and one programming question. Please note that there is another interview done before me with 2 programming questions. My programming question is rather simple (for example: reversing a singly-linked linked list). My coworkers think that my questions will not find good developers since my questions are rather simple and well known, but so far most of the applicants fail those questions. My questions are: Should I change the structure of my interview for this kind of job? What questions do you ask to figure our if the applicant is test oriented? (Maybe I should provide a buggy implementation of a problem and let them find the bugs and then ask them about what tests they would have done) Regards,

• STL vector performance

  STL vector class stores a copy of the object using copy constructor each time I call push_back. Wouldn't it slow down the program? I can have a custom linkedlist kind of class which deals with pointers to objects. Though it would not have some benefits of STL but still should be faster. Does it have any effect on performance esp when we have larger objects?

  I'm using the GAE datastore for a Java application, and storing some text that will be in numerous languages. In my servlet, I'm first checking to see if there's any data in the data store, and, if not, I'm creating some, similar to the following: ArrayList<Lang> list = new ArrayList<Lang>(); list.add(new Lang("EN", "English", 1)); list.add(new Lang("ES", "Español", 0)); //more languages here... PersistenceManager pm = PMF.get().getPersistenceManager(); for(Lang l : list) { pm.makePersistent(l); } Since this is using JDO, I guess I should include the relevent parts of the Lang class too: @PersistenceCapable public class Lang { @PrimaryKey private String code; @Persistent private String name; @Persistent private int popularity; // getters & setters & constructors... } However, the non-ASCII characters are giving me grief. I've set my Eclipse project to use the UTF-8 encoding instead of the default Cp1252, so I think I'm okay from that perspective, but when I use the App Engine Data Viewer to look at my data, that Español entry becomes Español, and when I click on it to view it, I get a 500 Server Error. (There are some other entries with right-to-left text that don't even show up in the Data Viewer at all, but one problem at a time...) Is there anything special I can do in my code to set the character encoding, or specify to GAE that the data I'm storing is UTF-8? Or is the problem on the Eclipse side, and is there something I should be doing with my Java code?

• Is there anything bad in declaring nested class inside interface in java?

  I have an interface ProductService with method findByCriteria. This method had a long list of nullable parameters, like productName, maxCost, minCost, producer and so on. I refactored this method by introducing Parameter Object. I created class SearchCriteria and now method signature looks like this: findByCriteria (SearchCriteria criteria) I thought that instances of SearchCriteria are only created by method callers and are only used inside findByCriteria method, i.e.: void processRequest() { SearchCriteria criteria = new SearchCriteria () .withMaxCost (maxCost) ....... .withProducer (producer); List<Product> products = productService.findByCriteria (criteria); .... } and List<Product> findByCriteria(SearchCriteria criteria) { return doSmthAndReturnResult(criteria.getMaxCost(), criteria.getProducer()); } So I did not want to create a separate public class for SearchCriteria and put it inside ProductServiceInterface: public interface ProductService { List<Product> findByCriteria (SearchCriteria criteria); static class SearchCriteria { ... } } Is there anything bad with this interface? Where whould you place SearchCriteria class?

• CSS3PIE issues in IE6 and 8

  I'm using CSS3PIE to apply some rounded corners to elements in Internet Explorer that will get them by stylesheet in other browsers. I've run into some issues with it though. In IE8, I discovered that any element that had the PIE behaviour would behave strangely. The container would jump a few pixels to the right, but the content would stay in its original position, giving the appearance that the content had all shifted left relative to its container. This would be especially problematic on elements with no or small amounts of padding. I was able to hack my way around the problem in IE8 by using X-UA-Compatible, but I'd rather avoid this solution if at all possible. I don't have access to IE9 for testing but my understanding hacks like PIE aren't necessary and it would be wasteful to force a compatibility mode in a browser that doesn't need it. I have worse issues in IE6, with the PIE layout breaking down completely on a list that is set up to use display:inline; zoom:1; list items (to simulate inline-block, which works in IE8 and the other browsers). Here the borders of the list items get rendered in completely the wrong place. So ideally, I'd like to have PIE work properly in IE6, and in IE8 without having to resort to compatibility mode. As far as IE6 goes, a graceful fallback where PIE is just not applied will do. IE7 is the only browser where the page displays as intended. I can't provide an example page just at the moment unfortunately, I can add one later though. Follow up: Here are some screen grabs made with IE Tester. I'm hoping they will make things a little more clear for everybody. As you can see, IE7 is fine. However, in IE8, the containers are offset to the left relative to their content, and in IE6 the list elements (with the rounded 1 pixel border) are a complete mess! • Different results between Android Geocoder and Google Geocoding web service

  I am creating an Android application and I need to use the geolocation. I have started by using the Geocoder API from Android (android.location.geocoder) but it causes some issues (timed out waiting for response from server) which seem to be common according to what I have read. To make my application work when this kind of error occurs, I use the Geocoding web service. Now, the application works every time. The problem is that the results returned by the geocoder from API and the geocoder from the web service are not the same. For example the web service returns only 3 addresses with only city name and country whereas the geocoding from the API returns about 8 addresses with the feature name, the thoroughfare, the locality... The question is: is there a way to make the results from the web service exactly the same than the ones from the API? • Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) - am I missing something here?

  I was reading about CORS (https://developer.mozilla.org/en/HTTP_access_control) and I think the implementation is both simple and effective. However, unless I'm missing something, I think there's a big part missing from the spec. As I understand, it's the foreign site that decides, based on the origin of the request (and optionally including credentials), whether to allow access to its resources. This is fine. But what if malicious code on the page wants to POST a user's sensitive information to a foreign site? The foreign site is obviously going to authenticate the request. Hence, again if I'm not missing something, CORS actually makes it easier to steal sensitive information. I think it would have made much more sense if the original site could also supply an immutable list of servers its page is allowed to access. So the expanded sequence would be: 1) Supply a page with list of acceptable CORS servers (abc.com, xyz.com, etc) 2) Page wants to make an XHR request to abc.com - the browser allows this because it's in the allowed list and authentication proceeds as normal 3) Page wants to make an XHR request to malicious.com - request rejected locally (ie by the browser) because the server is not in the list. I know that malicious code could still use JSONP to do its dirty work, but I would have thought that a complete implementation of CORS would imply the closing of the script tag multi-site loophole. I also checked out the official CORS spec (http://www.w3.org/TR/cors) and could not find any mention of this issue.

  What are the best UI design in terms of usability and esthetics you have even seen? I mean both desktop software (of all OS) and website. My list: Picasa 3 - the way it organizes photos. Find-and-highlight-as-you-type in google Chrome. Dynamic search hints when entering something in the search box in Gmail. I'm not a Mac OS X user, but I have seen in most windows on the top toolbar there are both the icons and texts shown for each function, as apposed to on Windows I have seen many programs (MS Office included) have many small toolbar icons which you can hardly understand what they do until you hover the mouse on it for a while to see the hints (if any). The ability to search an setting in Eclipse IDE. the way to make 3D models in Google Sketchup. the way to label an email in Gmail. What are you list? Well, I couldn't resist to list some annoying UI design I have experienced and remember at this moment. IE on Windows server, when you visit the new website, you have to click many times to get it added to the white list before you can start browsing, IIRC, it's not fixed in IE 8 when that last time I used it on Windows 2008. The default search behavior in the File Explorer on Windows xp, that animated thing... the dialog that shows up when you are trying to save a plain text CSV file in Excel after applied some formatting options which does not compatible with CSV.

• Binding Listbox item source to a collection of collections in windows phone 7

  Hi there, I am trying to bind a Listbox ItemSource to a collection of multiple Lists. i.e. List PersonCollection List Person List Collection Now I need to show items from both of these list. In wpf you could use HierarchicalDataTemplate i believe, but not sure how I can do it in windows phone 7. Tried with Blend and it generates the following data template. <DataTemplate x:Key="PersonDataTemplate"> <Grid> <StackPanel Margin="0,0,1,0" Orientation="Vertical" VerticalAlignment="Top"> <TextBlock Margin="0,0,1,0" TextWrapping="Wrap" Text="{Binding Person[0].Name}" d:LayoutOverrides="Width"/> <TextBlock Margin="0,0,1,0" TextWrapping="Wrap" Text="{Binding Collection[0].Total}" d:LayoutOverrides="Width"/> </StackPanel> </Grid> </DataTemplate> Is there another way I can do this? Cant find anything similar on the net apart from the confirmation that HierarchicalDataTemplate is not supported in Windows Phone 7. I have other ways to do but none elegant.. Thanks in advance. It returns a list containing the results of calling F with one argument from each list in each possible combination. Example: Call MapProduct with F being a function that simply returns a list of its arguments, and two lists. One of the lists contains the integers 1 and 2, the other one contains the strings "a" and "b". It should return a list that contains the lists: 1 and "a", 1 and "b", 2 and "a", 2 and "b". Questions: How is MapProduct implemented? What is the function's type? What is F's type? Can one guess what the function does just by looking at its type? Can you handle inhomogeneous lists as input? (e.g. 1 and "a" in one of the input lists) What extra limitation (if any) do you need to introduce to implement MapProduct?

• Hibernate: fetching multiple bags efficiently

  Hi! I'm developing a multilingual application. For this reason many objects have in their name and description fields collections of something I call LocalizedStrings instead of plain strings. Every LocalizedString is basically a pair of a locale and a string localized to that locale. Let's take an example an entity, let's say a book -object. public class Book{ @OneToMany private List<LocalizedString> names; @OneToMany private List<LocalizedString> description; //and so on... } When a user asks for a list of books, it does a query to get all the books, fetches the name and description of every book in the locale the user has selected to run the app in, and displays it back to the user. This works but it is a major performance issue. For the moment hibernate makes one query to fetch all the books, and after that it goes through every single object and asks hibernate for the localized strings for that specific object, resulting in a "n+1 select problem". Fetching a list of 50 entities produces about 6000 rows of sql commands in my server log. I tried making the collections eager but that lead me to the "cannot simultaneously fetch multiple bags"-issue. Then I tried setting the fetch strategy on the collections to subselect, hoping that it would do one query for all books, and after that do one query that fetches all LocalizedStrings for all the books. Subselects didn't work in this case how i would have hoped and it basically just did exactly the same as my first case. I'm starting to run out of ideas on how to optimize this. So in short, what fetching strategy alternatives are there when you are fetching a collection and every element in that collection has one or multiple collections in itself, which has to be fetch simultaneously.

• Have something loaded only when JList item is visibile

  Hello, i'm implementing a Jlist populated with a lot of elements. Each element corresponds to a image so i'd like to show a resized preview of them inside each row of the list. I've implemented a custom ImageCellRenderer extending the Jlabel and on getListCellRendererComponent i create the thumbnail if there'snt any for that element. Each row corresponds to a Page class where i store the path of the image and the icon applied to the JLabel. Each Page object is put inside a DefaultListModel to populate the JList. I've tried to load the items and after set the model in the JList or set the model first and after starting appending the items but the results are the same. Is there any way to load the data only when necessary or do i need to create a custom control like a JScrollPanel with stacked items inside where i check myself the visibility of each elements?   I want to do the following things in my application 1) I want to display whether any USB drive is inserted or not in my application to prompt the user to insert a USB drive. I just want to notify the user if any USB dirve is inserted else prompt him to insert one using a label or something (i want to avoid messagebox as it will keep appearing whenever a device is inserted or removed. It will be irritating for the end user) in my Visual C# WinForm Application. If any USB drive is present display "USB drive detected" in the label. The user may add one or more USB sticks but the status will remain same. When there is none then the status of the label will change to "No USB drives found.Please insert a USB drive". 2) When one or more USB drive is added the volume name with the drive letter for example "James(F:)" is added to the Combobox list. The combobox list also needs to remove the entry for the USB drive added in the list automatically when it is removed . So when there is no USB the list should be empty and the label will again prompt user to insert a USB stick or drive.

• Java ArrayList remove dupes without sets

  I'm having problems removing duplicates from an ArrayList. It's for an assignment for college. Here's the code I have already: public int numberOfDiffWords() { ArrayList<String> list = new ArrayList<>(); for(int i=0; i<words.size()-1; i++) { for(int j=i+1; j<words.size(); j++) { if(words.get(i).equals(words.get(j))) { // do nothing } else { list.add(words.get(i)); } } } return list.size(); } The problem is in the numberOfDiffWords() method. The populate list method is working correctly, as my instructor has given me a sample string (containing 4465 words) to analyse - printing words.size() gives the correct result. I want to return the size of the new ArrayList with all duplicates removed. words is an ArrayList class attribute. • [nHibernate] casting string to bool using nHibernate Criteria

  I have an nHibernate query using Criteria, and I am trying to cast a string to bool in the query itself. I have done the same with casting a string to int, and that works well (the "DataField" property is "1" as a string): var result = Session .CreateCriteria<Car>() .Add(Restrictions.Eq((Projections.Cast(NHibernateUtil.Int32, Projections.Property("DataField"), 1)) .List<Car>(); tx.Commit(); But I am trying to do the same with bool, but I do not get the expected result: var result = Session .CreateCriteria<Car>() .Add(Restrictions.Eq((Projections.Cast(NHibernateUtil.bool, Projections.Property("DataField"), true)) .List<Car>(); tx.Commit(); "DataField" is the string "True", but the result in an empty list, where it should contain 100 elements with the "DataField" property string set to "True". I have tried with the string "true", and "1", but the result is still an empty List. [EDIT] As Commented below, I could check for the string "True" or "False", but I would say this is a more general question than just for the Boolean. Note that the idea is to have some sort of key value representation of the data, where the value can be different data types. I need the value table to contain all data, so storing the data as string seems like the cleanest solution! I have been able to use the method above to store both int and double as string, and to the cast in the query, but I have not succeeded using the same method for DateDime and Boolean. And for DateTime it is crucial to have the actual DateTime object. How can I make the cast from string to bool, and string to DateTime work in the queries? Thanks

• wpf treeview does not show child objects

  I have an object with child object(s) and I load it using linq. And I assign it to a treeView's itemssource. treeView.DisplayMemberPath = "Name"; treeView.ItemsSource = tasks; It shows only the parent nodes (task.name), I couldn't figure out how to add children (TaskItems.name). All the examples show HierarchicalData in xaml. I need to do it in code-behind, just like the above code. • Finding missing files by checksum

  Hi there, I'm doing a large data migration between two file systems (let's call them F1 and F2) on a Linux system which will necessarily involve copying the data verbatim into a differently-structured hierarchy on F2 and changing the file names. I'd like to write a script to generate a list of files which are in F1 but not in F2, i.e. the ones which weren't copied by the migration script into the new hierarchy, so that I can go back and migrate them manually. Unfortunately for reasons not worth going into, the migration script can't be modified to list files that it doesn't migrate. My question differs from this previously answered one because of the fact that I cannot rely on filenames as a comparison. I know the basic outline of the process would be: Generate a list of checksums for all files, recursing through F1 Do the same for F2 Compare the lists and generate a negative intersection of the checksums, ignoring the file names, to find files which are in F1 but not in F2. I'm kind of stuck getting past that stage, so I'd appreciate any pointers on which tools to use. I think I need to use the 'comm' command to compare the list of file checksums, but since md5sum, sha512sum and the like put the file name next to the checksum, I can't see a way to get it to bring me a useful comparison. Maybe awk is the way to go? I'm using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x. Thanks.
