  • weird access denied issue with WMI

    I'm seeing a weird access denied issue with WMI. we're trying to create a diff disk based on a parent vhd in a windows service app that runs under network service (machine account is an admin). everything works fine when we create the diff disk on other machine using wmi - we use an admin user account. however, we cannot do this on a local machine as wmi doesn't take user cred for the local machine. so thought network service account already should have access for this, it seems like it doesn't and even if we run the service under an admin service account, it fails. any pointers???

  • Cannot access boot menu with compaq 8510p

    I have a problem with my HP compaq 8510p laptop: when I start it, the fan starts and the power light is on, but the screen displays nothing. When I insert a bootable hard drive, it activates the hard drive light (meaning that the CD is recognized) but it stops after a few seconds. Same thing with any hard drive: the drive is recognized but does not boot. What I've tried so far: Changing the hard drive or booting with no hard drive (same problem) Plugging anoher display via VGA : no display on the other screen Inserting a windows-7 CD (same problem) Booting only on battery, with battery and power cable, only with power cable (same problem) So it looks like something is preventing the laptop from booting and displaying the boot menu. Do you have experienced something similar with a laptop ? What could be wrong ? The laptop is out of warranty. The system used to be windows-7 x64. Edit: I went to the help desk of my university. A guy took a look (he also tried to plug an external screen) and said that the computer is dead: on the HP laptops eventually the GPU card dies and so does the motherboard because they are linked. He saw this many times, and even if I can fix the problem, the laptop would crash again after a while. Do you have similar experience with HP laptops ? (mine is 4 years old) Edit 2: Believe it or not, my laptop is magically working again. I have no clue about what is going on. Now it is like starting and old car: when you turn it on you secretly hope it will actually start... With that said, I expect my laptop to break again in the near future (its an HP after all) and I will accept an answer or add my own accordingly. Edit 3: As expected, the laptop is down again. This time, sometimes when I power it up, it shuts down automatically after 3 seconds, sometimes not at all. In addition, when it does not shut down on its own, the power button does not work : the only way to shut it down is by unplugging the battery. As before, the screen is black, and only the power and battery lights are on. (the other ones: hard drive and wifi are off). I have tried to plug in another power plug, removing the battery and removing the hard drive without success. I might buy another laptop. I've brought the laptop to a repair shop. The problem is indeed that the graphic card is down. It will be replaced by a new one.

    Does anyone know about a webcam photo application (ie an alternative to photo booth) with would allow to change the settings on the camera, such as : Select camera (I.e I want to use an external webcam) Change camera resolution (with photobooth change camera settings (I.e autofocus, aperture, color balance, etc..) I did a lot of research on the internet with no success. I am looking for a very simple app (such as wmcap.exe on Windows) What I tried so far: photo booth: it works with an external camera, however there is no way to change the resolution, or the color/focus settings manycam : a virtual webcam driver. you can add special effects to your camera and transfer those effects to any app, but not change your camera settings... iGlasses : enables you to change the camera settings inside photo booth and other apps. However you cannot control the focus, nor the video resolution macam (did not work on my Mac book Pro) Does anyone know better than me? Note : my only solution now is to launch a virtual machine (with parallels desktop) and take the pictures from there!

    I'm trying to configure my Windows 2008 servers so that my developers can view their status without needing to log on to the box or be an admin. Unfortunately, the permissions set in Windows 2008 for remote non-admin users don't include the ability to enumerate or otherwise query services. This causes anything that contacts the SCM on the far end to fail (Win32_Service, sc.exe, services.msc etc). How do I set up permissions so that they can at least list the services and see if they are running?

I really like mixed declarations and code since it makes the code more readable and prevents hard to see bugs by restricting the scope of the variables to the narrowest possible. This is recommended by Google for C++. For example, Linux requires at least GCC 3.2 and GCC 3.1 has support for C99 mixed declarations and code

When i'm trying to get into foobar.com/dir providing valid username/password pair i get 403 forbidden page instead of that directory contents. www.foobar.com/dir has 777 rights, .httpaswd is chmoded 644. But i can't figure out why i am still not seeing contents. Please, give me a hint.     I'm trying to set up a port forward to a KVM guest, managed through Libvirt on Debian 6. The VM is running in NAT, through the "default" network. This all runs fine, the VM has full internet connection. However, the host cannot reach the vm internally. Neither ping, nc nor nmap on the NAT network give any signs of the VM.   • Powershell access a single value in a table

    this should be a really easy one but i can't seem to find an easy way. For example, in powershell and am using a CSV file, which is then used to look up some configuration data based on an ID. Here is what I have now, it works, but there has got to be a better way. $configList = import-csv "C:\myconfig.csv" $id = "5001" $configList | where-object {$_.id -eq $id} | foreach-object{ $configData = $_.configData} If use format-table etc, I always get the column header, which I would then have to cut off. Again, this has got to be really easy and this isn't a show stopper. But there has to be a better way to get just the data out of a table without the column header.

  • Constantly visible notification and access icon for Empathy in Gnome 3

    Since a short while I'm using Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) with gnome-shell (Gnome 3) and I'm trying to get accustomed to the default Empathy Instant Messaging client. One mayor problem for me (coming from Gnome 2 and Psi) is that there is no constantly visible icon which makes it clear (for example by changing its icon or showing an animation) if there are incoming messages which I did not read already and which lets me jump into them with one click. Also I'm missing a way to bring up the contact list or hide it away with a click. I sometimes have real problems even figuring out how to even open the contact list up again. Is there a Gnome 3 extension or some other trick available to display such a notifier in the top bar? I'm talking about something just like the sound and network controls which are already located there. I know that there are notifications in the lower notification area (former system tray), but as it is only visible as I move the mouse in the lower right corner of the screen, its useless for me.

    Hi, Windows 7 is a great OS but there are some problems which should be solved from Microsoft as fast as possible. On my Computer the LAN connection randomly loses its connection. I don't know why but I think this problem depends on my network driver which is only available for Windows XP (where it always worked perfectly). I can not reproduce this issue. Has anybody here had the same problem?

    How do you configure IPTables so that it will only allow SSH in, and allow no other traffic in or out? Any safety precautions anyone can recommend? I have a server that I believe has been migrated away from GoDaddy successfully and I believe is no longer in use. But I want to make sure just because ... you never know. :) Note that this is a virtual dedicated server from GoDaddy... That means no backup and virtually no support.

    In my Java app, how can I incorporate the browser (which loads and renders URLs) in Swing and access it's DOM and manipulate HTML ? How can you embed such browser in a Rich Internet Application and access it's DOM ? More specifically, Vaadin ? Is there a HTTP proxy class that can load an external URL, and render it to the user ? This was what I was doing on LAMP stack....but I want to switch to Vaadin or some Java web framework where I can just use Java to do everything from server-side to client-side logic design, so I can focus more on application logic. Domain with specific port is pointing on computer in local network (fixed ip) like: mydomain.com:87 -> 192.168.1.1 Local machine is running on win server 2008. Everything works fine on local network.     I'm trying to create a new Windows 7 Professional VHD which I can dual boot to, following Scott Hanselman's guide to creating a bootable VHD. When I get to the command prompt in the Windows 7 installation and try to create a VHD or select/attach a pre-created VHD file I get an error saying that diskpart can't find the path specified. If I try and switch to the c drive using cd c: I see c:\ x:\something\> I already have a Windows 7 Ultimate install and my C drive is an SSD – if that makes a difference.
