• Windows 7: Image thumbnails fail to appear

  All right, I've got a pretty strange one here. Since I installed Windows 7 on this machine some time ago, image thumbnails have never worked properly. For the vast majority of images, they completely fail to show up, showing the icon of the default image viewing application instead. Please note that the “Always show icons, never thumbnails” option in folder options is not checked. I've taken a screenshot demonstrating the problem, here: Sometimes, a few image thumbnails will show up correctly, maybe about one in ten, with the rest failing as well. Another screenshot, with a handful of thumbnails visible, can be seen here: Windows explorer does not appear to make any effort to populate the missing thumbnails, and there is no appreciable CPU usage. I can leave a window with missing thumbnails open all night and they will still never appear. Newly created images never generate thumbnails, only images that have been on the system since day one will occasionally show them. This leads me to believe that explorer is set to show thumbnails, but whatever process is supposed to be in charge of actually generating them has failed somehow. In previous versions of windows, explorer.exe itself was responsible for thumbnail generation – has this changed? Any suggestions at all – even if you aren't sure that they will work – are welcome. I'd hate to have to wipe and reinstall on this machine for such a minor annoyance.

• How can I fix Office Sharepoint Search service?

  For some reason, in operations server services, Office Sharepoint Search Service is MISSING! Which means I cant get Shared services working, which in turn I cannot get, and I do not think I have ever got Usage and reporting to see who is visiting my website, counter and with what OS/ browser ETC. I dont think I have ever seen this work in the 2 years trying with sharepoint. So in essense I have two problems, most important SEARCH, second usage reports. When trying to search, all i get is unknown error. Nothing is in my event viewer at all. I have tried http://www.cjvandyk.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=96 , in the comments on that site, on other person reports search is missing entirely and is going to uninstall. Im tired of uninstall sharepoint and resinstalling to fix an odd off issue. I have things setup with Team foundation server that took forever to get work and reinstallation is not my solution. As for usage reporting, this is what microsoft responds to the " Both Windows SharePoint Services Usage logging and Office SharePoint Usage Processing must be enabled to view usage reports. Please contact your administrator to ensure that these services are enabled. " error I cannot do all the steps since SSP needs to be setup which i cant above.

• Having trouble setting up my router

  I just moved into my apartment and the Internet connection is working. It's Comcast in case that matters. Anyway, I'm having trouble setting up my wireless router (Netgear WNR2000) to work with it. Are there any settings that I could be missing? I currently have it set up to use a static IP address and I found the DNS servers I'm supposed to use and the Internet light is green, but I can't get out to the Internet. When I am trying, I'm connecting to an Ethernet port on the back of my router. Is there a setting I'm missing or a setting that I have set wrong? I used the automatic set up wizard to learn that it's a static IP address. Any help would be appreciated. I am currently only able to use my Linux machine, so please make any help in Linux commands. Yes, I can connect to the Internet if I connect to the modem directly and I've been using the web interface when I'm connected to the router, so I suppose I can ping the router. My router detected the connection as using a static IP address, so I connected to the modem directly and figured out what my IP address, gateway, and mask were as well as DNS servers.

• Passwordless SSH not working - keys copied and permissions set

  I know this question has been asked, but I'm certain I've done what all the other answers suggest. Machine A: used keygen -t rsa to create id_rsa.pub in ~/.ssh/ copied Machine A's id_rsa.pub to Machine B user's home directory Made the file permissions of id_rsa.pub 600 Machine B added Machine A's pub key to authorised_keys and authorised_keys2: cat ~/id_rsa.pub ~/.ssh/authorised_keys2 made the file permissions of id_rsa.pub 600 I've also ensured both the .ssh directories have the permission 700 on both machine A and B. If I try to login to machine B from machine A, I get asked for the password, not the ssh pass phrase. I've got the root users on both machines to talk to each other using password-less ssh, but I can't get a normal user to do it. Do the user names have to be the same on both sides? Or is there some setting else where I've missed. • OpenLDAP Authentication UID vs CN issues

  I'm having trouble authenticating services using uid for authentication, which I thought was the standard method for authentication on the user. So basically, my users are added in ldap like this: # jsmith, Users, example.com dn: uid=jsmith,ou=Users,dc=example,dc=com uidNumber: 10003 loginShell: /bin/bash sn: Smith mail: [email protected] homeDirectory: /home/jsmith displayName: John Smith givenName: John uid: jsmith gecos: John Smith gidNumber: 10000 cn: John Smith title: System Administrator But when I try to authenticate using typical webapps or services like this: jsmith password I get: ldapsearch -x -h ldap.example.com -D "cn=jsmith,ou=Users,dc=example,dc=com" -W -b "dc=example,dc=com" Enter LDAP Password: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) But if I use: ldapsearch -x -h ldap.example.com -D "uid=jsmith,ou=Users,dc=example,dc=com" -W -b "dc=example,dc=com" It works. HOWEVER...most webapps and authentication methods seem to use another method. So on a webapp I'm using, unless I specify the user as: uid=smith,ou=users,dc=example,dc=com Nothing works. In the webapp I just need users to put: jsmith in the user field. Keep in mind my ldap is using the "new" cn=config method of storing settings. • Why does USB thumb drive screw up boot sequence?

  I am looking for understanding to a boot issue. I have at times had some files and such that I save and retrieve from my thumb drive. I use the front panel as it is nice and easy to get to and I typically power down my system nightly. If I forget to pull the drive and power on the system, it becomes the first bootable device. As there is no OS on the USB Drive I get the BOOTMGR is missing press CTRL+ALT+DELETE. When I go into BIOS to see Boot sequence, there’s the thumb drive up top, DVD drive is missing and not found in the list of devices. All of the hard drives are next in line. When I pull the USB drive, and reboot, everything is back to normal. Old boot sequence is in place, DVD drive right where it should be and no issues. So why does this happen with a USB drive in port at boot up? If it can’t be booted from, shouldn’t the next drive be attempted? Note: This happens when the thumb drive is plugged into a USB port on the front panel. It does not seem to happen on rear panel ports.

• Concerns about Apache per-Vhost logging setup

  I'm both senior developer and sysadmin in my company, so i'm trying to deal with the needs of both activities. I've set up our apache box, wich deals with 30-50 domains atm (and hopefully will grow larger) and hosts both production and development sites, with this directory structure: domains/ domains/domain.ext/ #FTPS chroot for user domain.ext domains/domain.ext/public #the DocumentRoot of http://domain.ext domains/domain.ext/logs domains/domain.ext/subdomains/sub.domain.ext domains/domain.ext/subdomains/sub.domain.ext/public #DocumentRoot of http://sub.domain.ext Each domain.ext Vhost runs with his dedicated user and group via mpm-itk, umask being 027, and the logs are stored via a piped sudo command, like this: ErrorLog "| /usr/bin/sudo -u nobody -g domain.ext tee -a domains/domain.ext/logs/sub.domain.ext_error.log" CustomLog "| /usr/bin/sudo -u nobody -g domain.ext tee -a domains/domain.ext/logs/sub.domain.ext_access.log" combined Now, i've read a lot about not letting the logs out of a very restricted directory, but the developers often need to give a quick look to a particular subdomain error log, and i don't really want to give them admin rights to look into /var/logs. Having them available into the ftp account is REALLY handy during development stages. Do you think this setup is viable and safe enough? To me it is apparently looking good, but i'm concerned about 3 security issues: -is the sudo pipe enough to deal with symlink exploits? Any catches i'm missing? -log dos: logs are in the same partition of all domains. got hundreds of gigs, but still, if one get disk-space dos'd, everything will break. Any workaround? Will a short timed logrotate suffice? -file descriptors limits: AFAIK the default limit for Apache on Ubuntu Server is currently 8192, which should be plenty enough to handle 2 log files per subdomain. Is it? Am i missing something? I hope to read some thoughts on the matter!

  I have created a virtual host settings file and I disabled the default settings by using a2dissite default (this is a pretty standard Ubuntu 10.04 installation). But no matter what I try my Apache2 server simply keeps on displaying the default index.html page instead of the index.php page that I set up in the virtual host file. Can someone help me what I'm missing. • permanent NAS-mount in Ubuntu - wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock

  My network drive shows up in the file browser, just like my external usb-harddrive. Moving, running and editing files works. Hovering over it shows smb://lacie-2big/nasdisk . BUT, when I want to save a file, the drive doesn't come up as an option. All I can see is my other places, including my usb-harddrive. I am a complete newbie but I am GUESSING that it has something to do with the mount not being a "real" mount but just a shortcut to the smb location. So I ran the tutorial at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently about how to "mount a network drive permanently". edited my fstab to //LaCie-2big/nasdisk /media/nasmount cifs guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,codepage=unicode,unicode 0 0 and running sudo mount -a gave me the following error: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //LaCie-2big/nasdisk, missing codepage or helper program, or other error (for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might need a /sbin/mount. helper program) In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Now thats a very helpful error message, BUT, before I go any further, I'd be really thankful if one of you could tell me if I'm even in the right ballpark, or if my actual need: to be able to download files (ie torrents) directly to the drive, can be possible as it is already.   I am attempting to automate a script that executes commands on remote machines via ssh. I have public key authentication setup between the machines using ssh-agent. The script runs fine when executed from the command prompt. I suspect my problem is that cron isn't starting the ssh-agent due to it's minimalist environment. • Google Apps Sync bloated PST file to 14GB

  Back story: I have Outlook connected to my Google Apps email and noticed that some mail never got migrated from my original PST file. I found some VBA code online that compares mail in different PST folders, modified it to find missing and copy those to the target folder. I ran it folder by folder and moved missing mail. Before the exercise the Google Apps PST was about ~4GB and after it was ~4.7GB. Problem: I left Outlook open so Google Sync can copy it online. 24 hours later the Google Apps PST file bloated to 14GB+ and none of the mail has been synced to the cloud. I know that there should be at most ~5GB of mail. Why is the rest of the space being taken up? Funny thing is Gmail shows 3GB as being used online. What I tried: I emptied the deleted items folder and recycling bin I've run Outlook compact PST and it didn't work. I tried SCANPST.exe on the PST and it didn't work. I re-ran compact PST and it didn't work (after SCANPST found and fixed a few errors) Any ideas out there on what caused the problem and how to solve it?

  I'm trying to install IE9, visit http://beautyoftheweb.com, download it and then says it's downloading prereqs. After a minute, the installer says there's a problem and directs me to Prerequisites for installing Internet Explorer 9 Beta I click on the x86 installers one by one... most say "already installed".. But http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2120976/ says "The update is not applicable to your computer". Lame. So I try the IE9 install and the go through the whole process again with the same result. • Certain Japanese characters aren't displayed properly

  On the following site: http://www.nciku.com/search/radical the first 2 characters on the second row of the "Step 2" table aren't displayed properly. All other characters look fine. I tried re-installing the Asian fonts via the checkboxes regarding Asian fonts in the "Regional and Language Options" control panel applet. I have tried removing every single Font from the Fonts folder (some were ofcourse not possible to remove), and re-installing them all again. I did this by... Running cmd Closing down the explorer process In cmd; using the command DEL /F /S /Q * in the Fonts folder Putting in my XP SP3 Retail disc In cmd; using expand -r *.tt_ in the I386 folder on the XP disc (and any other font file, in the I386\LANG folder) I also tried installing this pack from Microsoft, but this solved nothing either. I even tried running my browser (Firefox) through AppLocale. And changing character encoding -- again, does not help. I've also tried viewing the page in Internet Explorer. What could be wrong? I have checked my Fonts folder, to make sure that every single font available on the XP disc is available in WINDOWS\Fonts. What shows in the first square on the second row - I can't really tell what it's supposed to look like (but it's not the proper character)... but the second square shows a rectangular symbol containing HEX code. I've been in this situation before -- and it has been when I've been missing fonts. But how could I possibly be missing a necessary font? Shouldn't it be provided in the Asian "font packages"? I've talked to some other users that has viewed the page, and they had no problems displaying those characters on second row - even though they're only using the fonts provided on the Windows installation disc.
