  • Determining if types alias to the same underlying type in C++

    - by emchristiansen
    I'd like to write a templated function which changes its behavior depending on template class types passed in. To do this, I'd like to determine the type passed in. For example, something like this: template <class T> void foo() { if (T == int) { // Sadly, this sort of comparison doesn't work printf("Template parameter was int\n"); } else if (T == char) { printf("Template parameter was char\n"); } } Is this possible?

  • Haskell and random numbers

    - by John D.
    Hi, I've been messing with Haskell few days and stumbled into a problem. I need a method that returns a random list of integers ( Rand [[Int]] ). So, I defined a type: type Rand a = StdGen -> (a, StdGen). I was able to produce Rand IO Integer and Rand [IO Integer] ( (returnR lst) :: StdGen -> ([IO Integer], StdGen) ) somehow. Any tips how to produce Rand [[Int]]?

  • Where to put the star in C and C++ pointer notation

    - by Martin Kristiansen
    For some time the following has been annoing me, where should I put the star in my pointer notation. int *var; // 1 and int* var; // 2 obviously do the same thing, and both notations are correct, but I find that most literature and code I look at use the 1th notation. wouldn't it be more 'correct' to use the 2th notation, separating the type and the variable name by a whitespace, rather than mixing the type and variable tokens?

  • how can I create macro definitions for the lines commented in the code.

    - by yaprak
    #include <stdio.h> //Here use a macro definition that assigns a value to SIZE (for example 5) int main() { int i; int array[SIZE]; int sum=0; for(i=0; i<SIZE; i++) { //Here use a macro definition named as CALCSUM to make the //following addition operation for the array printf("Enter a[%d] = ",i); scanf("%d", &array[i]); sum+=array[i]; //Here use a macro definition named as VERBOSE to print //what program does to the screen printf("The user entered %d\n", array[i]); // // //If the macro definition CALCSUM is not used, the program //should assign 0 to the i-th element of the array array[i]=0; //Here, again use VERBOSE to print what program does to the screen printf("a[%d] is assigned to zero\n", i); // // } //If CALCSUM is defined, print the summation of the array elements to the screen printf("Summation of the array is %d\n",sum); // //If CALCSUM is not defined, but VERBOSE mode is used, print the following printf("All the elements in the array are assigned to zero\n"); // printf("Program terminated\n"); return 0; } When CALCSUM is defined, the program will sum up the values of each element in the given array. If CALCSUM is not defined, each array element will be assigned to zero. Besides, when VERBOSE mode is defined, the program will make print statements pointed out active. [root@linux55]# gcc code.c [root@linux55]# ./a.out Program terminated [root@linux55]# gcc code.c -D CALCSUM [root@linux55]# ./a.out Enter a[0] = 3 Enter a[1] = 0 Enter a[2] = 2 Enter a[3] = 5 Enter a[4] = 9 Summation of the array is 19 Program terminated [root@linux55]# gcc code.c -D CALCSUM -D VERBOSE [root@linux55]# ./a.out Enter a[0] = 2 The user entered 2 Enter a[1] = 10 The user entered 10 Enter a[2] = 3 The user entered 3 Enter a[3] = 8 The user entered 8 Enter a[4] = 1 The user entered 1 Summation of the array is 24 Program terminated [root@linux55]# gcc code.c -D VERBOSE [root@linux55]# ./a.out a[0] is assigned to 0 a[1] is assigned to 0 a[2] is assigned to 0 a[3] is assigned to 0 a[4] is assigned to 0 All the elements in the array is assigned to zero Program terminated

  • Convert numbers to enumeration of strings in bash

    - by User1
    Using bash, I have a list of strings that I want to use to replace an int. Here's an example: day1=Monday day2=Tuesday day3=Wednesday day4=Thursday day5=Friday day6=Saturday day7=Sunday If I have an int, $dow, to represent the day of the week, how do I print the actual string? I tried this: echo ${day`echo $dow`} but get error of "bad substitution". How do I make this work? Note: I can change the $day variables to a list or something.

  • using declarations in main (C++)

    - by Crystal
    Although you wouldn't want to do this, if you have a namespace COMPANY, and a class in that namespace SOMECLASS. Why is it that in the .cpp file, you might define the functions as COMPANY::SOMECLASS::someFunction() {} But in main, you don't do int main() { COMPANY::SOMECLASS::someFunction(); } but instead you declare the namespace and do something like: using COMPANY::SOMECLASS; int main() { someFunction(); }

  • MySQL One to Many order by number found in joined table

    - by Finbarr
    Two tables: table_a ------- table_a_id: (primary, int) table_b ------- table_a_id: (index, int, from table_a) table_b_value: (varchar) A one to many relationship between table_a_id and table_b_value. Given a query like this: SELECT DISTINCT(table_a_id) FROM table_a JOIN table_b ON table_a.table_a_id=table_b.table_a_id I want to order by the number of occurrences of table_a_id in table_b. I'm not really sure how to write this in MySQL.

  • Can I Have Polymorphic Containers With Value Semantics in C++11?

    - by John Dibling
    This is a sequel to a related post which asked the eternal question: Can I have polymorphic containers with value semantics in C++? The question was asked slightly incorrectly. It should have been more like: Can I have STL containers of a base type stored by-value in which the elements exhibit polymorphic behavior? If you are asking the question in terms of C++, the answer is "no." At some point, you will slice objects stored by-value. Now I ask the question again, but strictly in terms of C++11. With the changes to the language and the standard libraries, is it now possible to store polymorphic objects by value in an STL container? I'm well aware of the possibility of storing a smart pointer to the base class in the container -- this is not what I'm looking for, as I'm trying to construct objects on the stack without using new. Consider if you will (from the linked post) as basic C++ example: #include <iostream> using namespace std; class Parent { public: Parent() : parent_mem(1) {} virtual void write() { cout << "Parent: " << parent_mem << endl; } int parent_mem; }; class Child : public Parent { public: Child() : child_mem(2) { parent_mem = 2; } void write() { cout << "Child: " << parent_mem << ", " << child_mem << endl; } int child_mem; }; int main(int, char**) { // I can have a polymorphic container with pointer semantics vector<Parent*> pointerVec; pointerVec.push_back(new Parent()); pointerVec.push_back(new Child()); pointerVec[0]->write(); pointerVec[1]->write(); // Output: // // Parent: 1 // Child: 2, 2 // But I can't do it with value semantics vector<Parent> valueVec; valueVec.push_back(Parent()); valueVec.push_back(Child()); // gets turned into a Parent object :( valueVec[0].write(); valueVec[1].write(); // Output: // // Parent: 1 // Parent: 2 }

  • ID generator with local static variable - thread-safe?

    - by Poseidon
    Will the following piece of code work as expected in a multi-threaded scenario? int getUniqueID() { static int ID=0; return ++ID; } It's not necessary that the IDs to be contiguous - even if it skips a value, it's fine. Can it be said that when this function returns, the value returned will be unique across all threads?

  • Thread won't stop when I want it to? (Java)

    - by Stuart
    I have a thread in my screen recording application that won't cooperate: package recorder; import java.awt.AWTException; import java.awt.Insets; import java.io.IOException; import javax.swing.JFrame; public class RepeatThread extends Thread { boolean stop; public volatile Thread recordingThread; JFrame frame; int count = 0; RepeatThread( JFrame myFrame ) { stop = false; frame = myFrame; } public void run() { while( stop == false ) { int loopDelay = 33; // 33 is approx. 1000/30, or 30 fps long loopStartTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); Insets insets = frame.getInsets(); // Get the shape we're recording try { ScreenRecorder.capture( frame.getX() + insets.left, frame.getY() + insets.top, frame.getWidth() - ( insets.left + insets.right ), frame.getHeight() - ( insets.top + insets.bottom ) ); } catch( AWTException e1 ) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e1.printStackTrace(); } catch( IOException e1 ) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e1.printStackTrace(); } // Add another picture long loopEndTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); int loopTime = (int )( loopEndTime - loopStartTime ); if( loopTime < loopDelay ) { try { sleep( loopDelay - loopTime ); // If we have extra time, // sleep } catch( Exception e ) { } // If something interrupts it, I don't give a crap; just // ignore it } } } public void endThread() { stop = true; count = 0; ScreenRecorder.reset(); // Once I get this annoying thread to work, I have to make the pictures // into a video here! } } It's been bugging me for ages. It periodically takes screenshots to the specified area. When you start recording, it hides (decativates) the window. On a Mac, when you give an application focus, any hidden windows will activate. In my class WListener (which I have confirmed to work), I have: public void windowActivated(WindowEvent e) { if(ScreenRecorder.recordingThread != null) { ScreenRecorder.recordingThread.endThread(); } } So what SHOULD happen is, the screenshot-taking thread stops when he clicks on the application. However, I must be brutally screwing something up, because when the thread is running, it won't even let the window reappear. This is my first thread, so I expected a weird problem like this. Do you know what's wrong?

  • why my test performance class gives me inconsistent results even after proper warm-up?

    - by colinfang
    i made a class which helps me measure time for any methods in Ticks. Basically, it runs testing method 100x, and force GC, then it records time taken for another 100x method runs. x64 release ctrl+f5 VS2012/VS2010 the results are following: 2,914 2,909 2,913 2,909 2,908 2,907 2,909 2,998 2,976 2,855 2,446 2,415 2,435 2,401 2,402 2,402 2,399 2,401 2,401 2,400 2,399 2,400 2,404 2,402 2,401 2,399 2,400 2,402 2,404 2,403 2,401 2,403 2,401 2,400 2,399 2,414 2,405 2,401 2,407 2,399 2,401 2,402 2,401 2,404 2,401 2,404 2,405 2,368 1,577 1,579 1,626 1,578 1,576 1,578 1,577 1,577 1,576 1,578 1,576 1,578 1,577 1,578 1,576 1,578 1,577 1,579 1,585 1,576 1,579 1,577 1,579 1,578 1,579 1,577 1,578 1,577 1,578 1,576 1,578 1,577 1,578 1,599 1,579 1,578 1,582 1,576 1,578 1,576 1,579 1,577 1,578 1,577 1,591 1,577 1,578 1,578 1,576 1,578 1,576 1,578 As you can see there are 3 phases, first is ~2,900, second is ~2,400, then ~1,550 What might be the reason to cause it? the test performance class code follows: public static void RunTests(Func<long> myTest) { const int numTrials = 100; Stopwatch sw = new Stopwatch(); double[] sample = new double[numTrials]; Console.WriteLine("Checksum is {0:N0}", myTest()); sw.Start(); myTest(); sw.Stop(); Console.WriteLine("Estimated time per test is {0:N0} ticks\n", sw.ElapsedTicks); for (int i = 0; i < numTrials; i++) { myTest(); } GC.Collect(); string testName = myTest.Method.Name; Console.WriteLine("----> Starting benchmark {0}\n", myTest.Method.Name); for (int i = 0; i < numTrials; i++) { sw.Restart(); myTest(); sw.Stop(); sample[i] = sw.ElapsedTicks; } double testResult = DataSetAnalysis.Report(sample); for (int j = 0; j < numTrials; j = j + 5) Console.WriteLine("{0,8:N0} {1,8:N0} {2,8:N0} {3,8:N0} {4,8:N0}", sample[j], sample[j + 1], sample[j + 2], sample[j + 3], sample[j + 4]); Console.WriteLine("\n----> End of benchmark"); }

  • Use reflection to get the value of a property by name in a class instance

    - by TheMoot
    Lets say I have class Person { public Person(int age, string name) { Age = age; Name = name; } public int Age{get;set} public string Name{get;set} } and I would like to create a method that accepts a string that contains either "age" or "name" and returns an object with the value of that property. Like the following pseudo code: public object GetVal(string propName) { return <propName>.value; } How can I do this using reflection? I am coding using asp.net 3.5, c# 3.5

  • Is it good practice to separate code into blocks?

    - by LM
    If I have a method that does multiple, related things, is it good practice to stick each "thing" that the method does into a seperate block? Ex. { int var //Code } { int var //More Code } It would help reduce the number of local variables, and make the code more readable, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea.
