• Is there a way to do a Windows 7 repair install when you are unable to start/boot Windows 7?

  My understanding is that the only way to perform a "repair install" in Windows 7 is to run the install setup.exe within the Windows 7 installation you want to repair. This seems a little brain dead to me since usually the reason I wanted to perform the repair install was because the existing installation was so broken that I could no longer boot and use it. It seems Microsoft is saying my only option in that case is to do a clean install and then reinstall all my apps. So I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to perform a Windows 7 repair install ... one that preserves your existing OS settings and application installs ... on a Windows 7 partition that cannot be booted.

• How do I force excel (and other office products) to stop opening files in the same application?

  Whenever I "double click" on an Excel file and another Excel file is open, the newly opened file automatically opens in the same application window as the previously opened Excel file. This isn't limited to just Excel, as I've seen Word do this as well. This poses a problem when wanting to compare documents side by side. The current solution I have for this is to actually open another Excel or Word instance, and then open the file from within that application window itself. Is there a way to force Office to open a new instance of the application when double clicking on the file icons? I'm currently using Office 2007 and Windows XP but I've seen this on Office 2010 and Windows Vista and 7. I'm looking for an overall solution if possible.

  I do a lot of screen print capturing, and I have just figured out how to use AutoHotKey to paste screen prints into MsPaint automatically. How to paste Print Screen on MS Paint automatically when press "PrtSc" button ? However, one small problem I have is that ... if I grabbed a screen with Alt-Prt Scr that is only 50x50 pixels, then there would be extra white margin around it, because MSPaint starts out with a larger canvas by default. How can I make it ALWAYS start with 1x1 instead?

  When I start my Ubuntu system it attempts two DNS lookups. One to find out what my internet-routers external ip is. And one to find the IP of my PSTN-SIP-provider. Both fails. [Apr 7 22:14:54] WARNING[1675] chan_sip.c: Invalid address for externhost keyword: sip.mydomain.com ... [Apr 7 22:14:54] WARNING[1675] acl.c: Unable to lookup 'sip.myprovider.com' And since the DNS fails it cannot register properly a cannot make outgoing or incoming calls. If I later, after bootup, restart asterisk everything works excelent. Any idea how I should setup things so that either: Delay Asterisk startup so that DNS is up and healthy first. Somehow get Asterisk to re-try the DNS thing later. Regards Leif

• Thunderbird 3.0 refuses to start on Mac OS X?

  I just downloaded Thunderbird 3.0 on my Macbook Pro running Leopard, and installed it in /Applications. When I attempt to start it, the icon opens on the Dock as normal, but I get the following dialog. I don't have a ~/Library/Application Support/Thunderbird directory at all, let alone a .parentlock file. While I didn't expect it to help, I did reboot my system. And sign out and back in. And close all programs besides Thunderbird. Earlier versions of Thunderbird have worked just fine.

• How do I start Chrome using a specified "user profile"?

  I use the new built-in "Users" feature of Chrome to switch between Home/Work accounts easily. However, Chrome remembers the "last" user profile you had selected when launching new windows. This is a problem if I close down my "Home" profile last, because when I then click the Email shortcut on my taskbar, because it goes to mail.mycompany.com using my Home profile, and I'm not logged in. I'd like to change the shortcut to the company webmail to pass a switch that tells Chrome to always start as the "Default" user, regardless of the last one used. Note: I have tried user-data-dir, and this seems to do something very different, completely isolated from the Users functionality built in to Chrome. It's possible I'm using it wrong, but please test this before assuming it does the same thing and posting an answer ;-)

  When MacOS boots up and the users is prompted to select the account (s)he wants to login into, the users can either click the name / icon of the account with the mouse or just type in the name of the account. I want to do the same at the login screen of Windows7: Login screen pops up, I start to type my account name, I select the account with enter and then I type the password and enter again. No usage of the mouse involved. (I am aware of tab-cycling and hard-to-follow-the-almost-invisible-marker-of-where-the-focus-is-right-now)

• Where does a Quick-Time powered application store changes to the user interface?

  I have downloaded an application written with the Quick Time library (for Windows 7). The application does not need an installation: just unzip it in a directory and run the program. It works, but I have a problem: the program allows the user to change a lot of values using its interface but does not have an option to reset them to their default values. What is more problematic is that when I exit the program and run it again, the interface still has the changed values. In the program directory there is no file that stores the changes done to the UI of the program. I suspect that Quick Time records these changes somewhere, but I can't find the right file. I have even deleted the application and re-unzipped it to another location - but the UI values still remain the same values changed by me!

  I'm running a script in the background which loads an image with feh depending on which application is currently in focus. However, whenever the script opens the image, window focus is lost to feh. I was able to circumvent this by using xdotool to switch back to the application that was originally in focus, but this introduces a short annoying period of time where the focus is switched from feh to the application. My question is this: is there any way to launch feh in the background such that window focus is NOT lost? System: Fedora 17, Gnome 3, Bash Thanks a ton!

• What are the most likely reasons an application would fail on only one of my servers?

  I have several servers to test new code on. I primarily push out asp.NET web applications. Last week, I had an issue where I installed a newly developed web application on three servers. The three servers all run in separate environments. The application worked fine on two of them, but consistently crashed on the third server with each web request. The problem was eventually traced to an in-house developed .dll file being out of date on the third server. I'm certain that this kind of thing happens all the time. However, there are numerous things that could go wrong to cause this kind of behavior. I spent quite a bit of time tracing this problem. I would like to make a list of things to be suspicious of next time this happens. What are the most likely reasons that a web application would crash on one of my servers while identical code runs fine on another server?

I have used the gcInterval JVM arg in the past on earlier versions of ColdFusion with success, but I have confirmed with verbose GC logs that Full GCs are still happening on the hour (Unless the Old Gen gets so full that it forces a full collection).   I have one physical server that runs: an Apache (httpd) server another web server (let's say Tomcat for sake of argument) on port 1234 Can I configure the Apache server to act as a proxy for SSL traffic, while keeping the application server blissfully unaware of SSL? What I imagine is: Traffic to http://myserevr.com/app is redirected to https://myserver.com/app Traffic to https://myserver.com/app is proxied to the application server. My SSL certificate is only installed on the Apache server, not on the Application server Other traffic to the Apache server (http://myserver.com/anotherapp) is served directly from the Apache server What's the best setup to achieve this? • How to configure permissions for win2008 task running as Network Service to stop/start a service on different system?

  Well... title says it all, actually. We've got a Scheduled Task set up on a windows server 2003 box running as the Network Service, and the batch file it runs will invoke "sc" to stop and then start a service on another windows box, however sc reports: [SC] OpenService FAILED 5: Access is denied. Running the same batch file via the windows explorer has no issues, and my user account is part of the Administrators group so I believe this is why there are no issues when I try it manually. Is this a permissions thing I enable for Network Service on the first server? Or do I enable permissions for Network Service somehow on the target server? This question (http://serverfault.com/questions/19382/why-sc-query-fails-from-one-machine-but-works-from-another) touches on something similar, but I'm looking for enabling the Network Service to access the service via the scheduled task.

• How does braking assist of car racing games work?

  There are a lot of PC car racing games around which have this unique driving assist which helps brake your car so that you can safely turn it. While in some games it just an 'assist', it will just help your car brake but won't ensure a safe turn. While in others, the braking assist will help you get a safe turn. I was wondering on what could be the algorithm that is followed to achieve it. A very basic algorithm I could think of was, Pre-determine the braking distance of an ideal car for every turn of the track, depending on the radius of the turn, and then start braking the car accordingly. For example, for a turn of less than 90o, the car would start braking automatically at 50m distance from the start of the turn. A more advanced algorithm, which would ensure a safe turn, could be Pre-determine the speed of the car at the start of each turn, individually for each track, turn and car. Also, pre-determine the deceleration rate of each car individually, which varies because of the car's performance. The braking assist would keep recording the speed of the car at a certain instant of time. Start braking the car appropriately so that the car gets to the exact speed needed at the start of the turn. For example, let the speed of a particular car at the start of a turn 43m in radius, be 120km/h. Let the deceleration rate of the car be 200km/h2. If, at some instant of time, the speed of the car is 200km/h, then the car would automatically start braking at 400m from the start of the turn.

• Where to store global enterprise properties?

  I'm faced with a crowd of java applications, which need different global enterprise wide properties for operation, for example: hostname of the central RDBMS, hostname and location of the central self-service portal, host location of central LDAP, host location of central mail server etc. Formally we build each application with a properties file, where all this properties are definied. But that's a very bad solution, because if the hostname of the mail server changes, we need to change the properties files for each application and deploy all applications again. Our idea is to centralize this properties, so that each application can ask for each property at runtime, for example: Idea: Put the properties file to an easy accessible file share. So if we need to change a property, each application uses the new properties. Idea: Put the properties to database. Main disadvantage: we need a dependency to database client libraries for each application. Idea: Put all applications into one big application server, that provides system properties for each application. Main disadvantage: needs deployment of each application to one application server. But that isn't a realistic scenario. Idea: Webservice that provides global enterprise wide properties. Main disadvantage: not very secure, because some properties are passwords or user credentials. What other alternatives are recommended? What is state of the art?

• FullCalendar displaying last weeks events below this weeks events

  I am developing an application to manage an On-Call calendar, using FullCalendar to render it. Most events are 1 week long, starting at 8:00 AM Tuesday and ending the following Tuesday at 8:00 AM. Another event, presumably with a different person on-call, will follow that event. During a hallway usability test, someone commented that the month calendar view was difficult to read because the previous weeks event is not at the top of the stack, instead rendering below the event that starts during that week. When being viewed, the eye perceives that it should go down 1 line to view the remaining timeline because the event from last week is there, instead of moving down to the following week. I investigated what I believe to be the problem: function segCmp(a, b) { return (b.msLength - a.msLength) * 100 + (a.event.start - b.event.start); } sorts the events for a row, but uses the length of the event in the calculation. Since the current week's event will have a longer duration, it always get sorted to the top. To test, I changed the start dates to Wednesday so the durations are closer. This cause the events to render how I would expect, with last weeks events at the top and this weeks at the bottom. I thought that if one of the events in the compare doesn't start that week, then it should only be compared based on the start times. I modified the function to be: function segCmp(a, b) { if (a.isStart == false || b.isStart == false) { return (a.event.start - b.event.start); } return (b.msLength - a.msLength) * 100 + (a.event.start - b.event.start); } This solved my problem, and the rendering now looks good - and passes the hallway test. What I don't know is if this would have an impact in other areas. I have taken a look at the other views (month, week, day) and they all seem to be rendering properly as well. I am just not familiar with FullCalendar enough to file a bug or feature request on this, or if this would even be considered a bug. I am wondering if what I modified is correct, or if it is not what a better modification would be to fix this issue. Thanks! • ActiveX component can't create Object Error? Check 64 bit Status

  If you're running on IIS 7 and a 64 bit operating system you might run into the following error using ASP classic or ASP.NET with COM interop. In classic ASP applications the error will show up as: ActiveX component can't create object   (Error 429) (actually without error handling the error just shows up as 500 error page) In my case the code that's been giving me problems has been a FoxPro COM object I'd been using to serve banner ads to some of my pages. The code basically looks up banners from a database table and displays them at random. The ASP classic code that uses it looks like this: <% Set banner = Server.CreateObject("wwBanner.aspBanner") banner.BannerFile = "wwsitebanners" Response.Write(banner.GetBanner(-1)) %> Originally this code had no specific error checking as above so the ASP pages just failed with 500 error pages from the Web server. To find out what the problem is this code is more useful at least for debugging: <% ON ERROR RESUME NEXT Set banner = Server.CreateObject("wwBanner.aspBanner") Response.Write(err.Number & " - " & err.Description) banner.BannerFile = "wwsitebanners" Response.Write(banner.GetBanner(-1)) %> which results in: 429 - ActiveX component can't create object which at least gives you a slight clue. In ASP.NET invoking the same COM object with code like this: <% dynamic banner = wwUtils.CreateComInstance("wwBanner.aspBanner") as dynamic; banner.cBANNERFILE = "wwsitebanners"; Response.Write(banner.getBanner(-1)); %> results in: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {B5DCBB81-D5F5-11D2-B85E-00600889F23B} failed due to the following error: 80040154 Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG)). The class is in fact registered though and the COM server loads fine from a command prompt or other COM client. This error can be caused by a COM server that doesn't load. It looks like a COM registration error. There are a number of traditional reasons why this error can crop up of course. The server isn't registered (run regserver32 to register a DLL server or /regserver on an EXE server) Access permissions aren't set on the COM server (Web account has to be able to read the DLL ie. Network service) The COM server fails to load during initialization ie. failing during startup One thing I always do to check for COM errors fire up the server in a COM client outside of IIS and ensure that it works there first - it's almost always easier to debug a server outside of the Web environment. In my case I tried the server in Visual FoxPro on the server with: loBanners = CREATEOBJECT("wwBanner.aspBanner") loBanners.cBannerFile = "wwsitebanners" ? loBanners.GetBanner(-1) and it worked just fine. If you don't have a full dev environment on the server you can also use VBScript do the same thing and run the .vbs file from the command prompt: Set banner = Server.CreateObject("wwBanner.aspBanner") banner.BannerFile = "wwsitebanners" MsgBox(banner.getBanner(-1)) Since this both works it tells me the server is registered and working properly. This leaves startup failures or permissions as the problem. I double checked permissions for the Application Pool and the permissions of the folder where the DLL lives and both are properly set to allow access by the Application Pool impersonated user. Just to be sure I assigned an Admin user to the Application Pool but still no go. So now what? 64 bit Servers Ahoy A couple of weeks back I had set up a few of my Application pools to 64 bit mode. My server is Server 2008 64 bit and by default Application Pools run 64 bit. Originally when I installed the server I set up most of my Application Pools to 32 bit mainly for backwards compatibility. But as more of my code migrates to 64 bit OS's I figured it'd be a good idea to see how well code runs under 64 bit code. The transition has been mostly painless. Until today when I noticed the problem with the code above when scrolling to my IIS logs and noticing a lot of 500 errors on many of my ASP classic pages. The code in question in most of these pages deals with this single simple COM object. It took a while to figure out that the problem is caused by the Application Pool running in 64 bit mode. The issue is that 32 bit COM objects (ie. my old Visual FoxPro COM component) cannot be loaded in a 64 bit Application Pool. The ASP pages using this COM component broke on the day I switched my main Application Pool into 64 bit mode but I didn't find the problem until I searched my logs for errors by pure chance. To fix this is easy enough once you know what the problem is by switching the Application Pool to Enable 32-bit Applications: Once this is done the COM objects started working correctly again. 64 bit ASP and ASP.NET with DCOM Servers This is kind of off topic, but incidentally it's possible to load 32 bit DCOM (out of process) servers from ASP.NET and ASP classic even if those applications run in 64 bit application pools. In fact, in West Wind Web Connection I use this capability to run a 64 bit ASP.NET handler that talks to a 32 bit FoxPro COM server which allows West Wind Web Connection to run in native 64 bit mode without custom configuration (which is actually quite useful). It's probably not a common usage scenario but it's good to know that you can actually access 32 bit COM objects this way from ASP.NET. For West Wind Web Connection this works out well as the DCOM interface only makes one non-chatty call to the backend server that handles all the rest of the request processing. Application Pool Isolation is your Friend For me the recent incident of failure in the classic ASP pages has just been another reminder to be very careful with moving applications to 64 bit operation. There are many little traps when switching to 64 bit that are very difficult to track and test for. I described one issue I had a couple of months ago where one of the default ASP.NET filters was loading the wrong version (32bit instead of 64bit) which was extremely difficult to track down and was caused by a very sneaky configuration switch error (basically 3 different entries for the same ISAPI filter all with different bitness settings). It took me almost a full day to track this down). Recently I've been taken to isolate individual applications into separate Application Pools rather than my past practice of combining many apps into shared AppPools. This is a good practice assuming you have enough memory to make this work. Application Pool isolate provides more modularity and allows me to selectively move applications to 64 bit. The error above came about precisely because I moved one of my most populous app pools to 64 bit and forgot about the minimal COM object use in some of my old pages. It's easy to forget. To 64bit or Not Is it worth it to move to 64 bit? Currently I'd say -not really. In my - admittedly limited - testing I don't see any significant performance increases. In fact 64 bit apps just seem to consume considerably more memory (30-50% more in my pools on average) and performance is minimally improved (less than 5% at the very best) in the load testing I've performed on a couple of sites in both modes. The only real incentive for 64 bit would be applications that require huge data spaces that exceed the 32 bit 4 gigabyte memory limit. However I have a hard time imagining an application that needs 4 gigs of memory in a single Application Pool :-). • Infinite loop during A* algorithm

  The A* algorithm is used by enemies to have a path to the goal. It's working but when sometimes I placed a tower in a grid (randomly) it produces a stack overflow error. The A* algorithm would iterate the enemy and find its path and pass the list to the enemy's path. I added debug logs and the list that I'm getting it looks like it would arrive from start cell to goal cell.
