  I've spent more time than i should trying to get my ray picking program working. I'm pretty convinced my math is solid with respect to line plane intersection, but I believe the problem lies with the changing of the mouse screen touch into 3D world space.   I am working with an XNA content loader sample. In the references for the project (VS 2010 Express) there are: Microsoft.Build Microsoft.Build.Framework //as well as the standard XNA framework and graphics references To emulate this project, I am trying to first add a reference to Microsoft.Build.dll. But Visual Studio warns me that it cannot load the .dll. I looked at MSDN and the document referenced Microsoft.Build.Evaluation. This is suppose to be available in the Microsoft.Build.dll and then I'll have access to the Project class. Has anyone had any experience with this?

• Algorithm to generate N random numbers between A and B which sum up to X

  This problem seemed like something which should be solvable with but a few lines of code. Unfortunately, once I actually started to write the thing, I've realized it's not as simple as it sounds. What I need is a set of X random numbers, each of which is between A and B and they all add up to X. The exact variables for the problem I'm facing seem to be even simpler: I need 5 numbers, between -1 and 1 (note: these are decimal numbers), which add up to 1. My initial "few lines of code, should be easy" approach was to randomize 4 numbers between -1 and 1 (which is simple enough), and then make the last one 1-(sum of previous numbers). This quickly proved wrong, as the last number could just as well be larger than 1 or smaller than -1. What would be the best way to approach this problem? PS. Just for reference: I'm using C#, but I don't think it matters. I'm actually having trouble creating a good enough solution for the problem in my head.

Since this could be a long ongoing project, I want to get the structure right from the beginning. This is what I had in mind: Create a solution named "doEverythingDashboard" Delete the project named "doEverythingDashboard" under the solution "doEverythingDashboard" Create winform project named "interface" Create console applications projects for each functionality of "doEverythingDashboard" Reference each console application in "interface" Does this make any sense? Would it make more sense to just have one project and create a class per functionality instead of an entire project?

• What's a good way to store a series of interconnected pipe and tank objects?

  I am working on a puzzle game with a 6 by 6 grid of storage tanks that are connected to up to 4 tanks adjacent to them via pipes. The gameplay is concerned with combining what's in a tank with an adjacent tank via the pipe than interconnects them. Right now I store the tanks in a 6x6 array, vertical pipes in a 5x6 array, and horizontal pipes in a 6x5 array. Each tank has a reference to the object that contains both tanks and pipes and when a pipe needs to be animated filling with liquid, the selected tank just calls a method on the container object telling it to animate the pipes it is connected to (subtract 1 from row or column to find connected pipes). This feels like the wrong way of doing it, as I've also considered just giving each tank references to the pipes connected to it to access directly.

I tried to use a reference device but it seems to run very slowly, then I found some samples in C++ that allows me to change to a WARP device and the performance is good.   So, this is the first time I actually separated a single program into a header and two .cpp files . But I think I am getting an linkage error . Heres how the directory looks . (heres a link to my image I dont have enough rep to post image in the question) http://i.stack.imgur.com/sbT4V.png The main.cpp is my main source file where all the calling functions and other important stuff goes . In functions.cpp I have all my functions , in the coordin.h file I have the function prototypes and structures and Constants . Everything is ok no typo nothing I have checked everything . But I am getting an undefined reference to function error. I have included the coordin.h file too . Do you think the functions.cpp file needs to go somewhere else I mean is the compiler not looking inside that file ? Thanks !

  I'm behind NAT, so I can't access pool.ntp.org or Ubuntu's own time servers directly, and I'd like to change the time servers for my system. When googling, I find references to missing manpages like ntpd.conf(5) and ntpd(8), to a missing GUI for setting the time servers, and to a cron script (/etc/cron.daily/ntpdate) that doesn't seem to exist on my system. I've also found a reference to there being changes to ntpd.conf, so I'm hesitant to just create that file in /etc. How is one supposed to change the time servers in 11.10?

  I’m writing simple strategy game (in xna), and would like to have an animated background. In my game all the actions happens inside one screen and thus standard parallax effect does not look appropriate. • MVC Design Pattern to Combine Multiple Models for use

  In my design, I have multiple models and each model has a controller. I need to use all the models to process some operation. Most examples I see are pretty simple with 1 view, 1 controller, and 1 model. How would you get all these models together? Only ways I can think of are 1) Have a top-level controller which has a reference to every controller. Those controllers will have a getter/setter function for their model. Does this violate MVC because every controller should have a model? 2) Have an Intermediate class to combine every model into a one model. Then you create a controller for that new super model. Do you know of any better ideas? Thanks.

  I'm currently working at a quite big Android project (a social network, you can see it here if is useful to answer the question). We decided to restyle the whole app, changing all the UI design. The code I actually have is complex, there are many controllers, and it's a little messy too. Is it "better" in terms of time and code cleanliness to take one controller per time, and rewrite it entirely, or to modify one controller per time? The layout change entirely anyway, so for that I know I've to restart from scratch. Maybe it could seem a stupid question, but with the "time" variable I really can't see the best way.

  How important is the knowledge of a language versus the games that you have developed in your portfolio? To be more specific. Personally, I dislike C++ for several reason(mainly due to it's complexity, and pointers, and I prefer D as my language of choice thus far. Due to this, I've written two games in D instead of C++ that are my personal projects. Am I wasting my time with D? Should I start using C++ again? For reference, I have 6 months of experience in C++. It's the first language I learned. I have messed around with SDL/SFML and a bit of Direct3D with C++ as well. Even though I like D, i'd rather not waste my time learning it, if it in no way will help me get a job in the gaming industry.

• How to name a clamp function that only clamps from one side?

  Clamp() is a function that ensures that provided variable is in provided range. You can find such function in .NET, in Unity, and probably anywhere. While it is useful, I often need to clamp my value from one side only. For example, to ensure that float is always non-negative or always positive (like radius value from inspector). I used names ClampFromAbove() and ClampFromBelow(), but I wonder if such names is good or even grammatically valid in programming-English. Also, it probably make sense to distinguish non-negative case too. How'd you name such function? Something like EnsureNonNegative()? My intention is creating pair of extension methods and use them like this: var normalizedRadius = originalRadius.ClampFromBelow(0.0001); var distance = someVector.Magnitude.ClampFromAbove(maxDistance);

• Why don't my Google Analytics custom segmentation visit numbers match up?

  I have three main areas of my site and want to track total usage as well as breakdowns of the three parts. I am trying to segment the "type" of use on each page using a custom variable as such: ['_setCustomVar',1,'Visitor Type','Unknown',1] Visitor type can be one of three values: "Unknown", "Reader" or "publisher". Every page has this value set. Now when I look at my analytics chart and chose all three segments, the individual values do not match the sum. I've double checked the pages to make sure the custom var is there.

  So heres a simple c++ function what it does it take an array of characters as its argument and a integer n and then creates a new character array with only n elements of the array. char * cutString(char * ch , int n){ char * p = new char[n]; int i ; for(i = 0 ; i < n ; i++) p[i] = ch[i]; while(i <= n ){ p[i++] = '\0'; } return p ; } this works just fine but if I change char * p = new char[n]; to char p[n]; I see funny characters what happens ? What difference does the former make also p is a temporary variable then how does the function returns it alright ?

• Implementing unlockable items on Android

  I know this would be a beginners question (some of you might think) but I would like to know different approaches for this. I have a game with lets say 20 unlockable items, at the main menu I have a button where the user can go to an activity and view the unlockable items. So I would like for it to have a "Locked image" and under it a text telling you what the item is and maybe how to unlock it. What is the best way of going about this? And then when the item is unlocked during the game, maybe put a variable in the shared preference and check at the beginning of the activity with the unlockabled items. • Ubuntu move fullscreen window to other monitor?

  I have been using Cinnamon with Ubuntu for quite some time now and here with full screen applications (games and the like) I could press META to bring up the "start menu/tray" then right-click that application and "move to monitor - monitor 1" - I see no such button when right-clicking applications from tray on Ubuntu with Unity. I'd prefer being able to do it that way since I am more used to it, is there some way to enable it for Unity?   Hi i come across this challenge on an online programing challange the task is so simple for ex WE have to variable N and K where N is where N is lenght of array and we have to find sum of duiffrence of K smallest element of array as Sample Input 10 4 1 2 3 4 10 20 30 40 100 200 Sample Output 10 Explanation #0 We have 10 as N size of array and K is 4 here the next N values are array's elments in order to find sum of diffrences we will takek smallest values from array which are 1,2,3,4 then will perform operation(sum of difference) as |1-2| + |1-3| + |1-4| + |2-3| + |2-4| + |3-4| = 10 I tried solving the problem and found a way through which i can solve the problem wit N^3 complexity but my solution is rejected i need a approach to solve the problem with n complexity i still can't figure out a way .. looked at some solution but coud'nt find the exact way to approach. if anybody have a better idea and would like to share it would be appreciable thanks in advance

• Why use binary files to stack up different versions on DMSs?

  I've used both Liferay and Alfresco trying to use them as the Document Management System for an intranet. I noticed the following: They use the file system and the database to store files They use a GUID to name the file on the filesystem and that GUID is used as an Id in the database. The GUID-named file is a binary file The GUID-named binary file stores all versions for a given file The path for the file in the DMS doesn't match the one in the file system The URL makes reference to the GUID when a certain file is requested What I want to know is why is this, and what would be the best way of doing it. Like how to would you create the binary file (zip?), and what parts would you keep in the binary file and what parts would you store in the database (meta-data, path?). I'm assuming some of the benefits of doing it like this. As having the same URL for a file, regardless of its current document path. And having only one file even if the file has changed names over time.
