  • How to monitor the total number of SQL Server logins

    We have an SQL Server 2005 that is the backend of a web application. The application is partly SharePoint and partly web services accessing the database via Entity Framework. In the performance monitor I am seeing average SQL Logins is ca, 60 per second (max 170), but the average logouts is less than 1. Where can I see the total number of SQL Server logins? Anyone have an idea what could be causing this?

    I have read that there is an option of using Gmail as your primary mail server. In the sense that you can add mx records etc and you do not have to do it on your own server. Do you think this is a recommended setup in terms of security. Will Gmail do the fight against virusses, spam, and brute force attacks for you?

    I'm trying to do a really simple task - setup a virtual directory in Windows Server 2008. This is what I am doing but it's not working for some reason: Open IIS 7 Create a new virtual directory in Default Web Site and point it to a folder on d:\ drive Browse to folder on d:\ drive and create an .htm file with some test text in it Open a browser and navigate to http://localhost/TestSite/index.htm But I get a 404 - what gives? Edit:I didn't mention at first that this is Server 2008 R2

  • Run a batch file before user logs into Windows 2003 R2?

    I have an Amazon EC2 machine (Windows Server 2003 R2) where I want to run a script (.bat file) when the Windows Server 2003 R2 machine boots up. This need to run BEFORE any user logs in. Ideally I'd like to extend the same work-around on my Windows Server 2008 R2 instances too - but Windows Server 2003 R2 is critical for me as of now. Purely as FYI, the .bat file updates the DDNS records so the EC2 machine doesn't need to consume static IPs.

    I only installed Ubuntu a couple of weeks ago but my friend showed me how to use aircrack.Anyways, he said that i needed to install a special driver for it and while i was trying to install it the instruction told me to uninstal the previous driver but the installation of the new driver didnt work, so now im stuck with no wireless drivers on my netbook.But, when i boot into windows it works fine,any tips? Btw,i'm using an ar2427 wireless adapter on an asus eee pc 1001pq,please reply.

  • Best way to duplicate databases nightly?

    Hey all We just got two new servers, that are running Windows Server 2008. The intent is to make the machines pretty much identical, copying the content of the master to the slave on a nightly basis, so that if anything fails, the second copy can stand in immediately. It doesn't need to be up-to-the-minute mirroring, though I suppose that wouldn't hurt if performance is not affected. The two machines will, amongst other things, each be running an instance of SQL Server 2008. The aim is to duplicate the databases on the master down to the slave on a nightly basis. Unless I'm misunderstanding, the slave databases in mirrored databases require the primary to be present to work correctly; I'm hoping for some solution where we have a second machine that can be up and running with minimal downtime if the first one falls over. Am I misunderstanding mirroring? Is that the best way to do things, or should I use some other mechanism? If so, what?

I would like to migrate all of my email to my personal server. Is there an easy to use, secure, open source alternative to Gmail that can be ran on personal servers? I do not need a web interface to my email as I usually access it via IMAP.

  • Upgrade an Ubuntu 8.04 installation with VMware Server 1.0.8 and lots of guest OSes to Something Els

    I have an Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) host machine which is running a whole slew of virtual machines in VMWare Server 1.0.8. Among other guest OSes, there is every release version of Ubuntu since 6.06, OpenSolaris 2009.06, and Windows XP. Right now I access these VMs from a variety of client OSes as well; Linux and Windows via the VMWare server console, and MacOS via X-forwarding the host machine's server console. I'd like to upgrade the host to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), but from what I can tell, getting VMWare Server 1.x to work on a more recent version of Linux is a real pain. While VMware Server 2.x is a bit easier, it's still not packaged as Debian packages, so installing security updates is a big chore. As long as I'm upgrading anyway, I'd like to move to a virtualization solution that will allow me to automate applying updates. The options that I'm aware of right now are KVM (managed via virt-manager) and VirtualBox (as managed by its own tools or via its own libvirt bindings), but I'm open to other suggestions. For each option, I'd like to know how do I convert my guest images to the new format? am I going to have to re-activate my Windows guests (alternatively, "If the virtual hardware is different by default, can I avoid re-activation by changing some virtualization configuration to provide me with more similar virtual hardware") what are the management options like for each client OS (mac, linux, windows)?   • Software to measure power draw of HP Server

    I'm after some software to measure the power draw of a HP Server, namely a DL360 series. I know Nagios is used for logging and monitering but I'm not sure if it logs power usage as well. I've also tried to find the HP Server Management package but am not sure if this shows power usage either. I'm thinking my best bet would to buy some sort of device that goes inbetween the wall and the servers plug. Can anybody suggest what would do for me?

    Whenever I try to install any new package or upgrade a package, it fails with below mentioned error: Setting up install-info (4.13a.dfsg.1-5ubuntu1) ... /etc/environment: line 1: PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games: No such file or directory dpkg: error processing install-info (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already Errors were encountered while processing: install-info E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I checked all the directories mentioned in PATH variable exists.

  • Adding features to an SQL Server 2008 standard with SP1

    I have MS SQL Server 2008 with SP1 installed. I want to add the Full text feature to the installation. Do I need to run the SP1 update again after I add this feature? If I do try to run it (SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-x64-ENU) it fails with this error: "There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer". Should I uninstall SP1 and re-install? Doesnt make much sense.

    I'm trying to P2V a Windows Server 2008R2 to vmware vsphere 4.1 using Vmware vCenter Converter standalone 4.3. Source Box Windows Server 2008R2 24GB ram Dual Quad-Cores 1 Raid 5 drive 680 GB 3 GB "Recovery" partition 40 GB OS partition 637 GB Data partion When we try and convert using the stand alone converter and the built in vCenter converter there are no source volumes listed. Has anyone dealt with this before?

    Machine A, Windows Server 2003. Machine B, Ubuntu 9.04. Aim is to copy new and updated files as fast as possible from A to B. B can mount A either as CIFS or NFS (Services for Unix NFS server running on A). This is an absolutely time critical operation. What is the best way of achieving this? Note: benchmarked NFS vs CIFS and CIFS was faster and there was less variance in the speed (haven't tuned the NFS setup at all)

I am using Windows rarely and for my official purpose I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I forgot to allocate around 100 GB of space while installing. Now 100 GB is free in HDD and its not usable. How can I allocate that free space as another volume without formatting the current OS?

  • Thank You For Visiting Us At Oracle OpenWorld And JavaOne

We always enjoy putting faces with names and meeting those of you who are certified or are interested in Certification. Personally, I spent my week on sunny Taylor street at the Java Certification Zone in Taylor Street Cafe.  I talked to over 100 people last week about certification and handed out over 65 ribbons. The Oracle Certification Lounge at OpenWorld, at Moscone South enjoyed more than 200 visitors over the week. Both locations offered scheduled speakers and available experts, in addition to answers to all of your certification questions and account help when needed. We look forward to this opportunity every year to connect with you face to face.   • Routing PHP memcached calls to Oracle Coherence

    A new post Getting Started with the Coherence Memcached Adaptor from David Felcey shows how PHP memcached calls can automatically be routed to store data in Oracle Coherence 12c. This is possible now Coherence 12.1.3 supports Memcached clients using the Binary Memcached protocol. David's post shows how the Coherence Memcached adaptor can be configured as a proxy service that runs in the Coherence cluster. There's nothing particular to configure in the PHP application, except to enable memcached.use_sasl = 1 So what is Coherence? It is an "in-memory data grid solution", with a number of advanced features. You can read more in the Oracle Coherence 12C Data Sheet.

  • Strange permission errors with Windows Server 2008

    I just don't know a better way to describe my issue that is driving me nuts. I am trying to establish a test domain with virtual machines on a box that has Win7 with VMwware workstation installed. The purpouse with this domain will be so that we can try and test different situations before they go into the production network. I build a VM with WinSrv2008R2 and I am using that VM as a template to make other servers for the domain by making clones of it. Now I raise a DC with one clone and a member server with another clone - I add the server to the domain. I am following a standard procedure as always (it is not my first domain). Then I make an admin account and I am adding the admin to be a member of the Domain and Enterprise Admins group. That admin is admin with full priviledges on the DC.. no problem there. But on the other server has ... somewhat half the privileges and I cant log in via RDP. I tryed with another account. Same issues. For example (with half the privileges): I can't open the Even Viewer if I go via Start - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer. But I can open the Even Viewer via the server manager. You can notice this on the image below. I mean WTF??? I am going crazy, I haven't experienced anything similar in my three years of expertise. I already lost 3 days troubleshooting this. Could this be related with the cloning? Perhaps if I make fresh installs of WinSrv2008 there won't be any problems? I've had raised test domains as VMs on other occasions before, and there weren't any problems then. This is VMware Workstation 8. I've made clones before, on Workstation 7 it didn't had any problems. Anyone has any ideas? UPDATE: This is the info from the event log when I try to access via RDP: An account failed to log on.
