• Routing and Remote access rule not being applied internally (Windows SBS)

  Hi, I have a Microsoft Small Business Server. I have pointed an external domain name to the external fixed IP address for the server. In routing and remote access I have defined a service for our subversion server as follows: Incoming port: 8443 Private address: 192.168.10.5 Outgoing port: 8443 192.168.10.5 is our development server, not the SBS (which is at 192.168.10.1) This rule works correctly if I am not on our internal network. However if I am on the internal network this rule does not get applied. What can I do/set so this rule is applied both internally and externally (so users with laptops et, don't keep having to change the URL by which they access the subversion server) Not sure what other info you may need, so please let me know if more details are required. • Dell Multi-Monitor Hub: true DisplayPort splitting?

  In my search for a new display, I came across the Dell Multi-Monitor Hub MMH11, which seemed to be an alternative to my search for daisy-chainable DisplayPort displays. However, before I cave and spend $179 on this device, I am wondering if this will be similar to other splitting devices where it appears to the computer as one big monitor and the device does the splitting (which I don't want). Or, does this use the packet-based nature of DisplayPort to present two/three separate displays to the computer? Also, would this device work on my MacBook Pro? (I know the Dell site says it's for Windows, but it also says that no driver installation is required. I'd assume since the MBP supports DP 1.2 it would work, but it's better to ask). Thanks!

• php include path problem:Same code works on Ubuntu default Apache and php conf, but not on CentOS

  So the same code works on my ubuntu server but when I upload it to my dedicated hosting server running CentOS it seems to add an extra prefix of .:/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php: I tried setting includepath to different things but it just doesn't work. the file is in a directory called language in the same folder as the file that is including it and I'm using : include dirname(FILE).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."language".DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."storage.inc"; and include dirname(__FILE__)."/language/language.php"; and include "language/language.php"; and alot of other combinations but I can't get it to find the file. • .htaccess does not ask the password

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and trying to use .htaccess on a page with apache2 server on it. My .htaccess file looks like this: AuthType Basic AuthName "Password Required" AuthBasicProvider file AuthUserFile /home/janeb/.htpasswd require valid-user /home/janeb/.htpasswd file is: inb351:$apr1$Ya4tzYvr$KCs3eyK1O2/c7Q9zRcwn.. and /etc/apache2/sites-available/default file is : UserDir public_html <Directory ~ "public_html/.*"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> I restarted apache. I have tried to change require valid-user to require user inb351. Still no luck. I also tried AllowOverride with AuthConfig and AuthConfig Indexes. So I don't know what else to do, and yes every step that I have tried I restarted apache.

• Barring connections if VPN is down.

  I have a VPN account and use it for sensitive communication. However the VPN connection sometimes is dropped while my main connection to the internet is still alive. The pages I visit through VPN are on HTTP (not secure) and have javascript code which pings the host every minute or so on a timer. So it happens sometimes that the VPN connection is dropped and yet js sends a request to the server (with the cookies). How could I restrict connections so they only happen if the VPN is live? • How to prevent Windows Home server waking for backup

  Since changing the motherboard in my Windows home server it has been switching itself on every night to perform a scheduled backup. I don't want this to happen though, I want to switch the server on using Wake on lan, but I want to manually perform backups if/when required. I know I can disable backups of each computer, and the machine wont turn on, but I want to allow manually triggered backups, or automatic backups if the homeserver is on, but if its in sleep mode, I wish it to stay in that state unless I wake it. How can this be achieved?

• PHP include_path doesn't work

  I have the documents at http://www.example.com/ in /home/www/example.com/www running on Debian Squeeze. /home/www/example.com/ www/ index.php php/ include_me.php In the php.ini I've uncommented and changed to: include_path =".:/home/www/example.com" In a script index.php in www, I have require_once("/php/include_me.php"). The output I am getting from PHP is: Warning: require_once(/php/include_me.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/www/example.com/www/index.php on line 2 Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/php/include_me.php' (include_path='.:/home/www/example.com') in /home/www/example.com/www/index.php on line 2 As you can see, the include-path is set correctly according to the error. But if I do require_once("../php/include_me.php");, it works. Therefore, something has to be wrong with the include-path. Does anyone know what I can do to fix it?

• Multiple SSL domains on the same IP address and same port?

  I set up an ubuntu 9.10 - apache2 - php5 server. I was under the impression that each valid SSL certificate (no domain wild cards) required it's own unique IP address and port number combination. But the answer to a previous question I posted is at odds with this claim: http://serverfault.com/questions/109766/ssl-site-not-using-the-correct-ip-in-apache-and-ubuntu Using the accepted answer, I was able to get multiple domains, each with it's own valid SSL to work on the same IP address and on port 443. I am very confused as to why the above answer works, especially after hearing from others that each SSL domain website on the same server requires its own IP+port combination. I am suspicious that I did something wrong. Can someone clear up the confusion? Websites currently using different SSL but on the same IP and Port are: https://www.yummyskin.com/ https://staging.bossystem.org/

• Accessing a shared folder using other credentials with Windows 7

  I was at a client office trying to connect to a shared drive on their network but was greeted by a "you do not have permission to access" error! Couldn't find any way to enter the required credentials as this message didn't had any other options. Tried to map the drive, selected the option to enter the correct credentials (with \\HOST\user) but it wouldn't work at all. The worst thing in all of this is that my coworker who is using OS X has been able to connect to that drive without any problem, he clicked on it, entered the credentials and could open the folder! The folder is shared by a Windows Small Business Server 2008 machine.

• Creating a custom NAS compatible with the Mac Time machine and for media streaming

  I am planning to assemble a custom NAS machine using an Intel Atom processor. I need the NAS for the following purposes: It should be accessible from by Windows PC so that I can dump data on the NAS (installations, media etc) It should be accessible from my Macbook for the above use. I should be able to use it with the Mac time machine software for backup. The media should be available to my PS3 for streaming. I should be able to access it from my iphone. All the above features should be available over wireless. The time machine feature is very important. Is this even possible? Can someone provide resources on how I can assemble such a machine and setup the required software on it? Much appreciated.

• Can Solaris RBAC roles be ported to Linux using SElinux only?

  We are migrating an application from Solaris to Linux and the main user is allowed, through the use of RBAC roles, to run a few system commands like svccfg/svcadm (chkconfig on redhat). Is it possible, using only SElinux (no sudo), to allow a normal user to run chkconfig off/on (basically give it the ability to add remove services) ? My approach was to try to create an SElinux user with a corresponding SElinux role that manages the app's domain/type and is allowed to transition to all other domains required to run chkconfig, tcpdump or any other system utility usually restricted to root access only. All my attempts so far have failed, so my second question would be where could I find good documentation that applies to this specific problem ?

  I'm using Putty to make a serial connection to a device. I need to send a Hex string on this session. How do I do this? The Hex String is FF7E414244 This is required to break the serial device into command interface mode... From an XP machine, I can use HyperTerminal. And then on the serial connection, do a "send file", where the file has this hexstring entered using hex editing means. So this mechanism works. But now I have a windows 7 with no hyperterminal. so I'm using putty. But now how do I send the hex string? Thanks

• Microsoft CALs for Domain Controller

  I am designing a network and I've come to the point of specifying out the number of CALs required for this network. Microsoft licensing has always confused me, it's just not always clear to me. I plan to have 1 2008 std domain controller, another 2008 server (not a domain controller) and 200 Windows 7 devices connected to the domain for domain services. The 200 W7 devices will all authenticate to the domain controller with the same domain account. (this is a special type of network, not a user workstation network) Therefore, do I need to purchase 200 CALS for the 200 devices, or can I purchase say 10 CALS (user CALS) as the amount of unique user accounts is very low. • Warning in Apache log: Cannot get media type from 'x-mapp-php5'

  I have no idea what is causing this issue, but it seems to be related to the displayed file (just a simple index.php to print phpinfo) being in an aliased directory. Any suggestions what I can do to avoid the warning? Here's an excerpt from my httpd.conf: <Directory "<dir with broken php>"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Alias /smartersoftware/ "<broken dir>" <FilesMatch \.php$> SetHandler application/x-httpd-php </FilesMatch> The last three lines were required to make php work at all (which I found a bit strange, and it may or may not be related to my problem).   I don't remember modifying CentOS useradd to get this behavior. useradd in CentOS creates the user's home directory with all the normal files (like .bashrc). I modified /etc/default/useradd to make it looks like CentOS (just required some uncommenting) except for Ubuntu having SHELL=/bin/sh instead of SHELL=/bin/bash How do I make useradd act like it does in CentOS? Is there some existing option to change? Or should I just add an alias to /etc/bash.bashrc? The difference: On Ubuntu, useradd is not creating the home directory. as root: $ useradd test $ cd ~test -su: cd: /home/test: No such file or directory

  I am looking at building a network with Nexus 5000 parent switches and Nexus 2000 fabric extenders. The mystery at the moment is what kind of SFP+ tranceivers are required for cross-connecting racks. Right now I am considering FET-10G, but I am not sure that 100m is long enough given the separation between racks is potentially very large since it is a rented rack environment. Are all SFP+ tranceivers usable for FEX between Nexus 5000 and Nexus 2000? Specifically, can SFP-10G-SR transceivers be used for longer distance FEX?

  I have a new install of Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role setup and a couple VMs running along fat, dumb, and happy. I want to play with Azure hosting for VMs for a couple of stand-alone boxes. Is there anything special that I need to wire up to be able to live-migrate to Azure? I have the 90-day Azure trial account right now. Any special plumbing required? I have not found a lot of documentation about this yet. Everything I found points to manually copying the VHDs via command line and the Azure 2012 SDK.

  Like I know the transfer speeds are vastly different. But I don't understand is why they are faster. And why couldn't they have implemented USB 3.0 when they released 1.0? Like what technical breakthrough was required to get transfer speeds that fast? Was it cost? capacities of computer? like they couldn't read the data fast enough? • Prevent machine in a LAN from receiving a remote shutdown

  I'm probably just overreacting, but I recently came across a LAN-scanner that showed me the option "remote shutdown", for all found computers on the scanned network. Now, how exactly does this work? If I send such a message, will the shutdown happen no matter what, or is it required to have the password/user-name of the user of that other computer. Mostly I'm wondering: can this be done to me and how do I prevent it? EDIT: what's more, I had the scanner check for shares. The result being this: Double clicking the links opens them in explorer, basically meaning my entire C and F drive(only 2 HD's I have) are completely exposed to anyone in my LAN. Or can I open these because it's my own machine?

• Mutliple VMs for Tomcat cluster vs Multiple Tomcat instances on one physical box

  I'm working on a project that will be implemented into production using a cluster of Apache Tomcat instances and I'm looking for the best Hardware/OS solutions and VMs have come up as one option. I have run ESXi/ESX instances before for development and testing, but I'm curious for a hosting environment if having multiple VMs is actually worse than just configuring a server to host multiple instances of Tomcat. These are my guesses: Pros for VMWare Easier Maintenance/Backup for individual VMs (VMWare makes this easy) Can remote login to individual VMs without having to give host access (security?) Easier way to re-purpose machine for OS/Hardware changes Pros for running on one Physical Machine Overhead of only one OS (also no VMWare footprint) Update OS/security changes once One less administrative layer (No VM expertise required) I'm curious if anyone has any other ideas about what the benefits would be for either option.

• Restarted computer, now wireless and Visual Studio is broken

  I installed the new update for TortoiseSVN which requires a restart. Upon restarting a lot of things broke. I'm currently running a virus scan, but what would cause this? Among the things that no longer work is Visual Studio. It now says "Invalid License Data. A reinstall is required" and my wireless internet does not work. When I go to connect to my network it will say "Can not connect" and then when I diagnose the problem it says "The connection to accesspoint-name was cancelled" (and yes, canceled is misspelt like that) What could have caused this? My computer did not install any updates or anything like that upon restarting and it was running fine before I restarted it.

• vsftpd with pam_winbind.so

  I'm trying to setup vsftpd to use logins from our domain. I want the ftp users to be able to login using their active directory username/password and have be able to have full access to /media/storage/ftp/username. I setup pptp using winbind and it is working fine, so I belive the issue is with vsftpd and pam. The ftp server runs and gives 530 for the login. I turned on debug for the pam module, but I see nothing in the syslog. • Sorting out mSSD acceleration on a Acer M3-581TG

  I recently purchased a Acer Timeline M3 Ultra, it ships with a 500GB HDD and a 20GB mSSD to use as a cache. First thing I did when I got it was format the drives and install a clean OS (on the HDD, the mSSD has nothing on it) - but now I can't figure out how everything needs to be configured in order to use the mSSD as a cache, it just looks like a standard storage drive. I've poked around in the BIOS and there is a SATA mode setting, but it only has one option (AHCI), most of the documentation I've seen on the subject says that the SATA controller needs to be in RAID mode otherwise 'Acceleration' isn't visible in the Intel SRT menu (which for me, it isn't) I've seen a few things that suggest I just need the correct partition layout, I tried this using fdisk from a Linux LiveCD but got nowhere. Any ideas? The laptop shipped with no recovery media so I'm marginally stumped. I don't have any issue with reformatting again if required.
