• RAID0 array of USB 2 disks, both connected to a single hub. Any benefit?

  I have two unused USB 2 drives. I wanted to stripe them in a RAID0 configuration for fast disk access for virtual machines. (I find running a VMware virtual machine off a USB2 drive to be painfully slow. Especially Windows Vista) If I have both USB drives attached to the same USB2 hub, will that negate any benefit I gain by creating a RAID0 array? That is to say, is the speed of USB2 the limiting factor or is the speed of the drives? Would I get better performance by attaching one or both drives directly to my computer?

• CPanel - How to stop Apache from running as root user?

I'm using WebHost Manager / CPanel which is supposed to create multiple users/vhosts and have Apache spawn it's process as that user/group. This isn't happening. If I login to WHM and open the PHP and SuExec Configuration section, my settings are: Default PHP Version (.php files) 5 PHP 5 Handler cgi PHP 4 Handler none Apache suEXEC on What's wrong? How can I get Apache to run as the correct user rather than root?

• Do I make the correct difference between spwan-cgi and mod_fcgi

  First of all im configuring an webserver with nginx and apache2 working together. Having only nginx is no options for me, neither is lighttdp. I am reading a tutorial 'Nginx -Apache -Proxy configuration on Centos-Plesk server' where this is exaplained in some detail. One thing i don't really understand. They are talking about installing spawn-fcgi to spawn the fastcgi process. Now if i understand this correct this program is only for nginx apache will run as normal. Apache will just run the mod_php5.c. If i want to have apache also work as fastcgi i have to confirgure that seperately, and let apache use mod_fcgi. Do I have this correct or am I talking utter nonsense. Nginx usses spawn-cgi as frontend Apache usses mod_fcgi in the back Inbetween there is a proxy that ports port 80(nginx) to port 8080(apache)

• Story of success: MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) was successfully integrated with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) via System Backup to Tape (SBT) interface.

  Since version 3.6 MEB supports backups to tape through the SBT interface.The officially supported tool for such backups to tape is Oracle Secure Backup (OSB).But there are a lot of other Storage Managers. MEB allows to use them through the SBT interface. Since version 3.7 it also has option --sbt-environment which allows to pass environment variables, not needed by OSB, to third-party managers. At the same time MEB can not guarantee it would work with all of them.This month we were contacted by a customer who wanted to use IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) with MEB. We could only say them same thing I wrote in previous paragraph: this solution is supposed to work, but you have to be pioneers of this technology. And they agreed. They agreed to be the pioneers and so the story begins.MEB requires following options to be specified by those who want to connect it to SBT interface:--sbt-database-name: a name which should be handed over to SBT interface. This can be any name. Default, MySQL, works for most cases, so user is not required to specify this option.--sbt-lib-path: path to SBT library. For TSM this library comes with "Data Protection for Oracle", which, in its turn, interfaces with Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN), which uses SBT interface. So you need to install it even if you don't use Oracle.--sbt-environment: environment for third-party manager. This option is not needed when you use OSB, but almost always necessary for third-party SBT managers. TSM requires variable TDPO_OPTFILE to be set and point to the TSM configuration file.--backup-image=sbt:: path to the image. • Weird internet connection behavior

  I'm having a strange problem with my internet connection. At the moment my ISP is Fastweb (an italian provider) and i noticed that sometimes i can't load some sites, then all i have to do is wait 5 minutes and then i can load the site again. Some other times, instead, images won't load on certains sites (this always happens with 500px.com or Facebook rarely). I noticed that if i use VPN software like Privitize VPN or Spotflux everything works like a charm. Is something wrong with my internet configuration? Thank you.

  I'm using Windows 7 and would like to have a feature like Little Snitch on the Mac that alerts you whenever a program on your computer makes an outgoing connection. Description of Little Snitch from its website: Little Snitch informs you whenever a program attempts to establish an outgoing Internet connection. You can then choose to allow or deny this connection, or define a rule how to handle similar, future connection attempts. This reliably prevents private data from being sent out without your knowledge. Little Snitch runs inconspicuously in the background and it can also detect network related activity of viruses, trojans and other malware. Little Snitch provides flexible configuration options, allowing you to grant specific permissions to your trusted applications or to prevent others from establishing particular Internet connections at all. So you will only be warned in those cases that really need your attention. Is there a program like Little Snitch for Windows?

• ssh login successful, but scp password gives me "Permission denied"

  I'm trying to get some blogging software up on an organizational remote server. I tried to set up a SSH Key but was having problems and decided that getting the blog up and running was more important than dealing with the SSH Key issue, so I ssh-keygen -R remoteserver.com. Now I can successfully login with ssh -v [email protected] and the correct password. Once logged in I can move around and read any file and directory that I should be able to read. But when I try to edit an existing -rw-r--r-- file with VIM, it shows up as read-only, if I try to edit permissions I get chmod: file.ext: Operation not permitted, and if I try to scp a new file from my local machine I'm prompted for the remote user's password, and then get scp: /home/path/to/file.ext: Permission denied. Since I didn't have any of these problems before I tried to set up the ssh key, I suspect these anomalies are a side effect of that, but I don't know how to troubleshoot this. So what does a foolish server-newb, such as myself, need to do to get edit capability back as a remote user? Addendum 1: My userids are different between my local machine and the remote server. For ssh I ssh -v [email protected]. if I whoami I get remoteuser For scp I scp file.ext [email protected]:/path/to/file.ext from the local directory with file.ext while logged in as the local user. if I whoami I get localuser The ls -l for two different files I've tried scp: -rw-r--r--@ 1 localuser localgroup 20 Feb 11 21:03 phpinfo.php -rw-r--r-- 1 root localgroup 4 Feb 11 22:32 test.txt The ls -l for the file I've tried to VIM: -rw-r--r-- 1 remoteuser remotegroup 76 Jul 27 2009 info.txt Addendum 2: In the past I've set up ssh-keys for git repositories.   I just finished the install and setup process of systemd on my arch-linux system (2012.09.07). I uninstalled initscripts (and removed the configuration files). What I want to do is create a service that can be started and stopped by a non-root user. The service is to start a detached screen session running rtorrent. However I want every user on the system who has set this service to start (enabled) to have a particular instance started for them specifically. How would one go about doing this? I remember reading that systemd supports user instances of services, however I have been unable to find any information on how to set this up, or whether it relates to what I am looking for. • Versioning and Continuous Integration with project settings files

  I came across something which was a bit of a pain in the bottom the other week. Our scenario was that we had implemented a helper style assembly which had some custom configuration implemented through the project settings. I'm sure most of you are familiar with this where you end up with a settings file which is viewable through the C# project file and you can configure some basic settings. The settings are embedded in the assembly during compilation to be part of a DefaultValue attribute. You have the ability to override the settings by adding information to your app.config and if the app.config doesn’t override the settings then the embedded default is used. All normal C# stuff so far… Where our pain started was when we implement Continuous Integration and we wanted to version all of this from our build. What I was finding was that the assembly was versioned fine but the embedded default value was maintaining the non CI build version number. I ended up getting this to work by using a build task to change the version numbers in the following files: App.config Settings.settings Settings.designer.cs I think I probably could have got away with just the settings.designer.cs, but wanted to keep them all consistent incase we had to look at the code on the build server for some reason. I think the reason this was painful was because the settings.designer.cs is only updated through Visual Studio and it writes out the code to this file including the DefaultValue attribute when the project is saved rather than as part of the compilation process. The compile just compiles the already existing C# file. As I said we got it working, and it was a bit of a pain. If anyone has a better solution for this I'd love to hear it

• Web deploy (msdeploy), syncing everything but sites and pools (but include siteDefaults)

  Today I do the following to sync two webservers but skip all site configuration: msdeploy -verb:sync -source:webServer -dest:webServer,computerName=web25:8080 -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/sites -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/applicationPools However, this effectively also skip the siteDefaults, which I do like to sync (system.applicationHost/sites/siteDefaults) There doesn't seem to be a way to "include" a section, to override the skip directive. And there doesn't seem to be a way to sync only the siteDefaults section from applicationHost either, since source appHostConfig only seem to sync a specified site, and not siteDefaults. Maybe it is possible to "skip" using an Xpath expression or similar, to only skip the nodes, but include , but I find the documentation a bit confusing and my Xpath is rusty.

• What is a generic term for name/identifier? (as opposed to label)

  I need to refer to a number of things that have both an identifier value (used in code and configuration), and a human-readable label. These things include: database columns dropdown items subapplications objects stored in a dictionary I want two unambiguous terms. One to refer to the identifier/value/key. One to refer to the label. As you can see, I'm pretty settled on the latter :) For the former, identifier seems best (not everything is strictly a key, and value and name could refer to the label; although, identifier usually refers only to a variable name), but I would prefer to follow an established practice if there is one. Is there an established term for this? (Please provide a source.) If not, are there any examples of a choice from a significant source (Java APIs, MSDN, a big FLOSS project)? (I wasn't sure if this should be posted here or to English Language & Usage. I thought this was the more appropriate expert audience. Happy to migrate if not.)

  I'm trying to get to my phone's filesystem through USB in Wammu, but I'm stuck in the configuration wizard when it asks for a USB device name. After about an hour of Internet searching, here are the failed solutions I've already tried, starting with the relevant information returned by lsusb in terminal. lsusb Bus 001 Device 003: ID 12d1:101e Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. So I tried opening Wammu through sudo wammu in terminal and inputting "/dev/bus/usb/001/003" as the device name, which returns: Error opening device Device /dev/bus/usb/001/003 does not exist! and then "/dev/bus/usb/001/", which returns: Failed to connect to phone Description: Error opening device. Unknown, busy, or no permissions.<br> Function: Init<br> Error code: 2 Another proposed solution was to try "tail -f /var/log/messages" in terminal. But that only returned a "No such file or directory" message. • Failing to upgrade to linux-image-3.0.0-26-generic

• Running own DNS Server for learning purpose

  I would like to run my own DNS server in my laptop for learning purpose. I recently used Google Public DNS and liked it. I wanted to build some thing similar and small for my web browsing. What I vaguely dream of is to use my own DNS server as Primary DNS server and Google public DNS as secondary DNS server. I would like to build my own DNS server gradually by editing the configuration files (If it can be automated it will be great, but have no clues there). Sometimes it sounds like a stupid idea to me, but I am fine with editing config file for each site I want to add to my DNS server. Any pointers/suggestion is welcome.
