I know now that I need to attach an entity before making my changes to it. But how can do I do this: I have an MVC website, a Customer Update Page with fields: ID, Name, Address, etc. My MVC is parsing this into a Customer entity. How do I do the following: Update my entity and Save the changes to it. Catch the exception if my changes have been made since I loaded my entity.

  I'm having a hard time binding a simple static string property to a text box. Here's the class with the static property: public class VersionManager { private static string filterString; public static string FilterString { get { return filterString; } set { filterString = value; } } } In my xaml, I just want to bind this static property to a text box: <TextBox> <TextBox.Text> <Binding Source="{x:Static local:VersionManager.FilterString}"/> </TextBox.Text> </TextBox> Everything compiles, but at run time, I get the following exception: Cannot convert the value in attribute 'Source' to object of type 'System.Windows.Markup.StaticExtension'. • Issue connecting to SQL Compact Edition on Windows Mobile 6 Emulator

  I am developing an application for Windows Mobile 6 using an emulator. When I try to open the database connection to the SDF file it is throwing an exception that it is not able to connect or find the file. My questions are: Where on the mobile device is the SDF file supposed to be deployed? Does the SDF file get automatically deployed to the emulator when I build the project (like in then windows forms app) or do I have to do that manually? Any help would be appreciated.

• ASP.NET cached aspx page & IIS logs

  Hi guys, Is there any way to find out if ASP.Net runtime has served a cached copy of ASPX page or actually went through the page life cycle? Here is my problem: I'm seeing many entries in my IIS log files that were served successfully (200 OK). I've a corresponding logging code (Log4Net API) in the Session_Start and Application_BeginRequest() events that is logging every request to my DB with more details. I'm not seeing any corresponding entries in my SQL DB for some cases that should have been created by Log4Net code. Are there any logs available to find out if a cached copy was served by .NET worker process? Moreover, if my logging code would throw an exception, won't that show up as 500 in IIS logs? The code is on Windows 2008 Server, IIS 7.

• Deep Null checking, is there a better way?

  We've all been there, we have some deep property like cake.frosting.berries.loader that we need to check if it's null so there's no exception. The way to do is is to use a short-circuiting if statement if (cake != null && cake.frosting != null && cake.frosting.berries != null) ... This strikes me however as not very elegant, there should perhaps be an easier way to check the entire chain and see if it comes up against a null variable/property. So is it possible using some extension method or would it be a language feature, or is it just a bad idea?

• Bracketing algorithm when root finding. Single root in "quadratic" function

  I am trying to implement a root finding algorithm. I am using the hybrid Newton-Raphson algorithm found in numerical recipes that works pretty nicely. But I have a problem in bracketing the root. While implementing the root finding algorithm I realised that in several cases my functions have 1 real root and all the other imaginary (several of them, usually 6 or 9). The only root I am interested is in the real one so the problem is not there. The thing is that the function approaches the root like a cubic function, touching with the point the y=0 axis... Newton-Rapson method needs some brackets of different sign and all the bracketing methods I found don't work for this specific case. What can I do? It is pretty important to find that root in my program... EDIT: more problems: sometimes due to reaaaaaally small numerical errors, say a variation of 1e-6 in some value the "cubic" function does NOT have that real root, it is just imaginary with a neglectable imaginary part... (checked with matlab) EDIT 2: Much more information about the problem. Ok, I need root finding algorithm. Info I have: The root I need to find is between [0-1] , if there are more roots outside that part I am not interested in them. The root is real, there may be imaginary roots, but I don't want them. Probably all the rest of the roots will be imaginary The root may be double in that point, but I think that actually doesn't mater in numerical analysis problems I need to use the root finding algorithm several times during the overall calculations, but the function will always be a polynomial In one of the particular cases of the root finding, my polynomial will be similar to a quadratic function that touches Y=0 with the point. Example of a real case: The coefficient may not be 100% precise and that really slight imprecision may make the function not to touch the Y=0 axis. I cannot solve for this specific case because in other cases it may be that the polynomial is pretty normal and doesn't make any "strange" thing. The method I am actually using is NewtonRaphson hybrid, where if the derivative is really small it makes a bisection instead of NewRaph (found in numerical recipes).   I wish to specify a specific command timeout (or LOCK_TIMEOUT) for an SQL and once this time out is reached an exception (or alert) has to be raised in nHibernate.   I have set up my mapping file and classes as suggested by many articles class A { ... IList BBag {get;set;} ... } class B { ... A aObject {get;set;} ... } <class name="A">...<bag name="BBag" table="B" inverse="true" lazy="false"><key column="A_ID" /><one-to-many class="B" /></bag>... <class name="B">...<many-to-one name="aObject" class="A" column="A_ID" />... I added a set of A's to the A table and a set of B's to the B table, all the data is stored as expected. However if I try and access aInstance.BBag.Count I get a null reference exception. I think I missing some key knowledge on how an bag gets instantiated. Thanks

  I've found that I can write (say, copy a file into) a Read-Only directory. That is, a Directory with ...Attributes = FileAttributes.ReadOnly.I can even change its name. The only thing I've found that can't be done is to delete it. Is that really the only thing that ReadOnly prevents? EDIT: Here's the code: (The Directory is empty.) (new DirectoryInfo(path)).Attributes = FileAttributes.ReadOnly; Directory.Delete(path); It throws an Access to the path 'c:\... is denied. exception. But after changing ReadOnly to Normal it works fine. So what does a ReadOnly prevent, and what doesn't it prevent?

  We use Tomcat to host our WAR based applications. We are servlet container compliant J2EE applications with the exception of org.apache.catalina.authenticator.SingleSignOn. We are being asked to move to a commercial J2EE application server. The first downside to changing that I see is the cost. No matter what the charges for the application server, Tomcat is free. Second is the complexity. We don't use either EJB nor EAR features (of course not, we can't), and have not missed them. What then are the benefits I'm not seeing? What are the drawbacks that I haven't mentioned? Mentioned were... JTA - Java Transaction API - We control transaction via database stored procedures. JPA - Java Persistence API - We use JDBC and again stored procedures to persist. JMS - Java Message Service - We use XML over HTTP for messaging. This is good, please more!

  I have a folder full of XHTML files, and a console program to process them. The problem is, it doesn't work when I'm offline, because The remote name could not be resolved: 'www.w3.org' A number of sites, including this one, say to set the XmlResolver to null. That is not not working. I have tried setting the XmlResolver to null every way that I can think of: in the XmlDocument, in XmlTextReader, and in the XmlReaderSettings. I believe that it's just creating a default instance. I have also tried implementing my own XmlResolver, but I don't know what to return for external items. public class NonXmlResolver : XmlUrlResolver { public override object GetEntity( Uri absoluteUri, string role, Type ofObjectToReturn ) { if ( absoluteUri.Scheme == "http" ) throw new Exception("What you talking 'bout, Willis?"); else return base.GetEntity( absoluteUri, role, ofObjectToReturn ); } } The documents do not use any special entities, only pure XML. • XmlDocument.InnerXml is null, but InnerText is not

  I'm using XmlDocument and XmlElement to build a simple (but large) XML document that looks something like: <Widgets> <Widget> <Stuff>foo</Stuff> <MoreStuff>bar</MoreStuff>...lots more child nodes </Widget> <Widget>...lots more Widget nodes </Widgets> My problem is that when I'm done building the XML, the XmlDocument.InnerXml is null, but the InnerText still shows all the text of all the child nodes. Has anyone ever seen a problem like this before? What kind of input data would cause these symptoms? I expected the XmlDocument to just throw an exception if it was given bad data. Note: I'm pretty sure this is related to the input data as I can only reproduce it against certain data sets. I also tried escaping the data with SecurityElement.Escape but it made no difference.

• Hitting a memory limit slows down the .Net application

  We have a 64bit C#/.Net3.0 application that runs on a 64bit Windows server. From time to time the app can use large amount of memory which is available. In some instances the application stops allocating additional memory and slows down significantly (500+ times slower).When I check the memory from the task manager the amount of the memory used barely changes. The application keeps on running very slowly and never gives an out of memory exception. Any ideas? Let me know if more data is needed.

  I have been loading an assembly via Assembly.LoadFrom(@"path"); and then doing Type t = asm.GetType("Test.Test"); test = Activator.CreateInstance(t, new Object[] { ... }); and it was working fine, but now I moved the dll I am getting the following System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. --- System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissons.SecurityPermission, etc .. For the sake of brevity it seems the demand was for an PermissionSet that allowed ControlAppDomain and it's not getting it. My question is how can I create this permissionset and pass it to the instance or assembly? I've been googling for hours to no avail.

If so, how? EDIT #1: I added the following: Console.WriteLine( "user: " + user ); Below this line: UserPrincipal user = UserPrincipal.FindByIdentity(context, "someLimitedAccount"); And I get this: user: It doesn't look like user is null when I print it, but then again I'm not really a .Net guy - I seem to remember this being expected behavior.

I searched for it and I found that there is problem with indexing. But, I am not sure about what query to write. Furthermore, I can add the query on the mongo of the development. I want to make sure that the indexing is done in test too. If anyone has any idea on this, feel free.

• How to handle concurrency control in ASP.NET Dynamic Data?

  I've been quite impressed with dynamic data and how easy and quick it is to get a simple site up and running. I'm planning on using it for a simple internal HR admin site for registering people's skills/degrees/etc. I've been watching the intro videos at www.asp.net/dynamicdata and one thing they never mention is how to handle concurrency control. It seems that DD does not handle it right out of the box (unless there is some setting I haven't seen) as I manually generated a change conflict exception and the app failed without any user friendly message. Anybody know if DD handles it out of the box? Or do you have to somehow build it into the site?

  I'm making a request from a java webapp to an Oracle' stored procedure which happens to have a Timestamp IN parameter. In the testing environment, it works sending: SimpleDateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("dd-MMM-yyyy hh:mm:ss a"); input.setTimestampField(dateFormat.format(new Date())); But in the production environment, it raises an exception ORA-01830: date format picture ends before converting entire input string. I know the testing environment should be a replica of the production site, but it is not in my hands to set them properly. And I need to send the Timestamp field despite the way they setup the database. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Core dump utility for .NET

  In my past life as a COBOL mainframe developer I made extensive use of a tool called Abendaid which, in the event of an exception, would give me a complete memory dump including a formatted list of every variable in memory as well as a complete stack trace of the program with the offending statement highlighted. This made pinpointing the cause of an error much simpler and saved a lot of step-through debugging and/or trace statements. Now I've made the transition to C# and .NET web development I find that the information provided by ASP.NET only tells half the story, giving me a stack trace, but not any of the variable or class information. This makes debugging more difficult as you then have to run the process again with the debugger to try and reproduce the error, not easy with intermittent errors or with assemblies that run under the likes of SQL Server or CRM. I've looked around quite a lot for something that does this but I can't find anything obvious. Does anyone have any idea if there is one, or if not, what I'd need to start with in order to write one?
