  • Showrooming: What's the big deal?

    - by David Dorf
    There's been lots of chatter recently on how retailers will combat showrooming this holiday season.  Best Buy and Target, for example, plan to price-match certain online sites.  But from my perspective, the whole showrooming concept is overblown.  Yes, mobile phones make is easier to comparison-shop, but consumers have been doing that all along.  Retailers have to work hard to merchandise their stores with the right products at the right price with the right promotions.  Its Retail 101. Yeah ok, many websites don't have to charge tax so they have an advantage, but they also have to cover shipping costs. Brick-and-mortar stores have the opportunity to provide expertise, fit, and instant gratification all of which are pretty big advantages. I see lots of studies that claim a large percentage of shoppers are showrooming.  Now I don't do much shopping, but when I do I rarely see anyone scanning UPC codes in the aisles.  If you dig into those studies, the question is usually something like, "have you used your mobile phone to price compare while shopping in the last year."  Well yeah, I did it once -- out of the 20 shopping trips.  And by the way, the in-store price was close enough to just buy the item.  Based on casual observation and informal surveys of friends, showrooming is not the modus-operandi for today's busy shoppers. I never see people showrooming in grocery stores, and most people don't bother for fashion.  For big purchases like appliances and furniture, I bet most people do their research online before entering the store.  The cases where I've done it was to see if a promotion was in fact a good deal.  Or even to make sure the in-store price is the same as the online price for the same brand. So, if you think you're a victim of showrooming, I suggest you look at the bigger picture.  Are you providing an engaging store experience?  Are you allowing customers to shop the way they want to shop, using various touchpoints?  Are you monitoring the competition to ensure prices are competitive?  Are your promotions attracting the right customers? Hubert Jolly, CEO of Best Buy, recently commented that showrooming might just get more people into his stores. "Once customers are in our stores, they're ours to lose."

  • PASS Summit 2011: Save Money Now

    - by Bill Graziano
    Register by March 31st and save $200.  On April 1st we increase the price.  On July 1st we increase it again.  We have regular price bumps all the way through to the Summit.  You can save yourself $200 if you register by Thursday. In two years of marketing for PASS and a year of finance I’ve learned a fair bit about our pricing, why we do this and how you react to it.  Let me help you save some money! Price bumps drive registrations.  We see big spikes in the two weeks prior to a price increase.  Having a deadline with a cost attached is a great motivator to get people to take action. Registering early helps you and it helps PASS.  You get the exact same Summit at a cheaper rate.  PASS gets smoother cash flow and a better idea of how many people to expect.  We also get people that are already registered that will tell their friends about the conference. This tiered pricing lets us serve those that are very price conscious.  They can register early and take advantage of these discounts.  I know there are people that pay for this conference out of their own pockets.  This is a great way for those people to reduce the cost of the conference.  (And remember for next year that our cheapest pricing starts right after the Summit and usually goes up around the first of the year.) We also get big price bumps after we announce the program and the pre-conference sessions.  If you wrote down the 50 or so best known speakers in the SQL Server community I’m guessing we’ll have nearly all of them at the conference.  We did last year.  I expect we will this year too.  We’re going to have good sessions.  Why wait?  Register today. If you want to attend a pre-conference session you can always add it to your registration later.  Pre-con prices don’t change.  It’s very easy to update your registration and add a pre-conference session later. I want as many people as possible to attend the Summit.  It’s been a great experience for me and I hope it will be for you.  And if you are going to go, do yourself a favor and save some money.  Register today!

  • How to make a dropdown list such that... (see details)

    - by daysandtimes
    I want to plot the stock prices of certain companies VS the S&P500. I have all the price data downloaded in my excel sheet already. I want to create a line graph in Excel. One line is fixed and that would be the S&P500, and the other would be the company I select. I know how to use data validation to create a dropdown list, but how could I make it in such a way that when I select company A, I would only see company A's price data but not company B, C, etc. Then when I select company B, I would only see company B's price data & the S&P price data. And so on. The S&P line will be visible all the time, but the various company's price line will only appear if it is selected. Is there any easy way to normalize all sets of data in a way such that the starting point is always 100?

  • Difference between Global and Local SEO

    - by user29660
    I have been reading up on SEO techniques in an effort to learn how to do it thoroughly so I can charge my client for the service. To guage my price I have checked out competitor prices and noticed that theres a fair price difference when it comes to guarenteeing a page 1 ranking with global keywords compared to local keywords. So what is the difference in terms of work load and techniques used to justify this price difference? just to clarify, i am looking for technical differences in programming , methodology etc.

  • Magento MAGMI: Product attributes (custom options) not showing up in import

    - by Rodgers and Hammertime
    When importing a CSV into Magento with the MAGMI importing tool, I am unable to import Custom Options (as in size: smalee/medium/large). The import manages to put in the basic products, but the Custom Options don't transfer accross. By custom options I mean the fields Title, Input Type, Is Required, Sort Order Title, Price, Price Type, SKU, Sort Order Title, Price, Price Type, SKU, Sort Order Title, Price, Price Type, SKU, Sort Order and so on ... Found in the custom options menu... Even using the example CSV from the MAGMI SourceForge Wiki: sku,name,description,price,Size:drop_down:1 T-Shirt1,T-Shirt,A T-Shirt,5.00,Small|Medium|Large T-Shirt2,T-Shirt2,Another T-Shirt,6.00,XS|S|M|L|XL ...it fails to import the attributes. So i'm simply using MAGMI with the supplied example data from SourceForge on a blank magento product list, and it doesn't transfer properly. Can anyone shed any light on what might be wrong? I am using Magento ver. 1.6.1.0 if that changes anything. Thanks.

  • How to test if raising an event results in a method being called conditional on value of parameters

    - by MattC
    I'm trying to write a unit test that will raise an event on a mock object which my test class is bound to. What I'm keen to test though is that when my test class gets it's eventhandler called it should only call a method on certain values of the eventhandlers parameters. My test seems to pass even if I comment the code that calls ProcessPriceUpdate(price); I'm in VS2005 so no lambdas please :( So... public delegate void PriceUpdateEventHandler(decimal price); public interface IPriceInterface{ event PriceUpdateEventHandler PriceUpdate; } public class TestClass { IPriceInterface priceInterface = null; TestClass(IPriceInterface priceInterface) { this.priceInterface = priceInterface; } public void Init() { priceInterface.PriceUpdate += OnPriceUpdate; } public void OnPriceUpdate(decimal price) { if(price > 0) ProcessPriceUpdate(price); } public void ProcessPriceUpdate(decimal price) { //do something with price } } And my test so far :s public void PriceUpdateEvent() { MockRepository mock = new MockRepository(); IPriceInterface pi = mock.DynamicMock<IPriceInterface>(); TestClass test = new TestClass(pi); decimal prc = 1M; IEventRaiser raiser; using (mock.Record()) { pi.PriceUpdate += null; raiser = LastCall.IgnoreArguments().GetEventRaiser(); Expect.Call(delegate { test.ProcessPriceUpdate(prc); }).Repeat.Once(); } using (mock.Playback()) { test.Init(); raiser.Raise(prc); } }

  • Adding dynamic data to a table

    - by user559780
    I've the following table in my application. I've a ajax request which will fetch the results to be shown in the table. How add these results to the table with out overridding the header every time? <table id="itemList"> <td>Name</td> <td>Price</td> <td>Quantity</td> <td>Total</td> </table> Then the ajax data is as shown below var items = [ { Name: "Apple", Price: "80", Quantity : "3", Total : "240" }, { Name: "Orance", Price: "50", Quantity : "4", Total : "200" }, { Name: "Banana", Price: "20", Quantity : "8", Total : "160" }, { Name: "Cherry", Price: "250", Quantity : "10", Total : "2500" } ]; Now I'm trying something like this but it is not working var rows = ""; $.each(items, function(){ rows += "<tr><td>" + this.Name + "</td><td>" + this.Price + "</td><td>" + this.Quantity + "</td><td>" + this.Total + "</td></tr>"; }); $( "#itemList" ).text('<tr><td>Name</td><td>Price</td><td>Quantity-</td><td>Total</td></tr>' + rows );

  • Avoiding seasonality assumption for stl() or decompose() in R

    - by user303922
    Hello everybody, I have high frequency commodity price data that I need to analyze. My objective is to not assume any seasonal component and just identify a trend. Here is where I run into problems with R. There are two main functions that I know of to analyze this time series: decompose() and stl(). The problem is that they both take a ts object type with a frequency parameter greater than or equal to 2. Is there some way I can assume a frequency of 1 per unit time and still analyze this time series using R? I'm afraid that if I assume frequency greater than 1 per unit time, and seasonality is calculated using the frequency parameter, then my forecasts are going to depend on that assumption. names(crude.data)=c('Date','Time','Price') names(crude.data) freq = 2 win.graph() plot(crude.data$Time,crude.data$Price, type="l") crude.data$Price = ts(crude.data$Price,frequency=freq) I want frequency to be 1 per unit time but then decompose() and stl() don't work! dim(crude.data$Price) decom = decompose(crude.data$Price) win.graph() plot(decom$random[2:200],type="line") acf(decom$random[freq:length(decom$random-freq)]) Thank you.

  • How to order search results by multiple fields?

    - by JustinRoR
    I am using Sunspot and Will_paginate for search in my application and don't how to have my search results start out with certain ordering conditions. The model I am searching is the UserPrice model and want my :price and :purchase_date in descending order or lowest price to highest and present date to past: class UserPrice < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :price, :product_name, :purchase_date belongs_to :product # Sunspot configuration searchable do text :product_name do product.name end end end class SearchController < ApplicationController def index @search = UserPrice.search do fulltext params[:search] paginate(:per_page => 5, :page => params[:page]) end @user_prices = @search.results end end Even though I don't know how, I'm not sure if I would use Sunspot or Will_paginate to sort by order of price and purchase date. How would I achieve this though? Thank you. UPDATE I try to use the order_by method but not sure how the model would look now. class SearchController < ApplicationController def index @search = UserPrice.search do fulltext params[:search] paginate(:per_page => 5, :page => params[:page]) facet(:business_retail_store_id) facet(:business_online_store_id) order_by :price, :desc order_by :purchase_date, :desc end @user_prices = @search.results end end Not sure why having the following in my controller: order_by :price, :desc order_by :purchase_date, :desc I get the error: Sunspot::UnrecognizedFieldError in SearchController#index No field configured for UserPrice with name 'price' This doesn't make sense to me since I do have these fields inside of my UserPrice model and in my database. How do I fix this?

  • mysql query not running correctly from inside the application

    - by Mala
    I am completely stumped. Here is my php (CodeIgniter) code: function mod() { $uid = $this->session->userdata('uid'); $pid = $this->input->post('pid'); if ($this->_verify($uid,$pid)) { $name = $this->input->post('name'); $price = $this->input->post('price'); $curr = $this->input->post('curr'); $url = $this->input->post('url'); $query = $this->db->query("UPDATE items SET name=".$this->db->escape($name).", price=".$this->db->escape($price).", currency=".$this->db->escape($curr),", url=".$this->db->escape($url)." WHERE pid=".$this->db->escape($pid)." LIMIT 1"); } header('location: '.$this->session->userdata('current')); } The purpose of this code is to modify the properties (name, price, currency, url) of a row in the 'items' table (priary key is pid). However, for some reason, allowing this function to run once modifies the name, price, currency and url of ALL entries in the table, regardless of their pid and of the LIMIT 1 thing I tacked on the end of the query. It's as if the last line of the query is being completely ignored. As if this wasn't strance enough, I replaced "$query = $this->db->query(" with an "echo" to see the SQL query being run, and it outputs a query much like I would expect: UPDATE items SET name='newname', price='newprice', currency='newcurrency', url='newurl' WHERE pid='10' LIMIT 1 Copy-pasting this into a MySQL window acts exactly as I want: it modifies the row with the selected pid. What is going on here???

  • Copy existing XML, duplicate element and modify

    - by Robert
    Hi, I have a tricky XSL problem at the moment. I need to copy the existing XML, copy a certain element (plus its child elements) and modify the value of two child-elements. The modifications are: divide value of the 'value' element by 110 and edit the value of the 'type' element from 'normal' to 'discount'. This is currently what I have: Current XML: <dataset> <data> <prices> <price> <value>50.00</value> <type>normal</type> </price> </prices> </data> </dataset> Expected result <dataset> <data> <prices> <price> <value>50.00</value> <type>normal</type> </price> <price> <value>45.00</value> <type>discount</type> </price> </prices> </data> </dataset> Any takers? I've gotten as far as copying the desired 'price' element using copy-of, but I'm stuck as to how to modify it next.

  • How do I compare 2 fields and return the lowest value of each record?

    - by BigRob
    I'm slowly learning access to make a database of products and suppliers for my parents' business. What i've got is a table of products indexed by our product reference and 2 more tables for 2 different suppliers that contains the suppliers product reference and price that links with our reference. I've made a query that performs a left outer join such that it returns a table of our products with each supplier's reference and price, i.e: Ref | Product Name | Supplier 1 Ref | Supplier 1 Price | Supplier 2 Ref | Supplier 2 Price Here's the query I used: SELECT Catalog.Ref, Catalog.[Product Name], Catalog.Price, [D Products].[Supplier Ref], [D Products].Cost, [GS Products].[Supplier Ref], [GS Products].Cost FROM ([Catalog] LEFT JOIN [D Products] ON Catalog.Ref = [D Products].Ref) LEFT JOIN [GS Products] ON Catalog.Ref = [GS Products].Ref; Not all products are available from both suppliers, hence the outer join. What I want to do (with a query?) is to take the table produced by the query above and simply show the product reference, cheapest supplier reference and cheapest supplier price, i.e: Ref | Cheapest Suppplier Ref | Cheapest Supplier Price Unfortunately my SQL knowledge isn't quite good enough to figure this out, but if anyone can help i'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Rob

  • Is there any performance comparison between Perl web frameworks?

    - by DVK
    I have seen mentions (which sounded like unsubstantiated opinions, and dated ones at that) that Embperl is the fastest Perl web framework. I was wondering if there's a consensus on the relative speed of the major stable Perl web frameworks, or ideally, some sort of fact-based performance comparisons between implementations of the same sample webapps, or individual functionalities (e.g. session handling or form data processing), etc...?

(Basically if I will figure put how to do this, I will replace li's on spans and that div that i need outside li's on li). Will be very glad if someone will help me. Because code that I have is already too much for me.

  • Fast JSON serialization (and comparison with Pickle) for cluster computing in Python?

    - by user248237
    I have a set of data points, each described by a dictionary. The processing of each data point is independent and I submit each one as a separate job to a cluster. Each data point has a unique name, and my cluster submission wrapper simply calls a script that takes a data point's name and a file describing all the data points. That script then accesses the data point from the file and performs the computation. Since each job has to load the set of all points only to retrieve the point to be run, I wanted to optimize this step by serializing the file describing the set of points into an easily retrievable format. I tried using JSONpickle, using the following method, to serialize a dictionary describing all the data points to file: def json_serialize(obj, filename, use_jsonpickle=True): f = open(filename, 'w') if use_jsonpickle: import jsonpickle json_obj = jsonpickle.encode(obj) f.write(json_obj) else: simplejson.dump(obj, f, indent=1) f.close() The dictionary contains very simple objects (lists, strings, floats, etc.) and has a total of 54,000 keys. The json file is ~20 Megabytes in size. It takes ~20 seconds to load this file into memory, which seems very slow to me. I switched to using pickle with the same exact object, and found that it generates a file that's about 7.8 megabytes in size, and can be loaded in ~1-2 seconds. This is a significant improvement, but it still seems like loading of a small object (less than 100,000 entries) should be faster. Aside from that, pickle is not human readable, which was the big advantage of JSON for me. Is there a way to use JSON to get similar or better speed ups? If not, do you have other ideas on structuring this? (Is the right solution to simply "slice" the file describing each event into a separate file and pass that on to the script that runs a data point in a cluster job? It seems like that could lead to a proliferation of files). thanks.

  • What is the best algorithm for this array-comparison problem?

    - by mark
    What is the most efficient for speed algorithm to solve the following problem? Given 6 arrays, D1,D2,D3,D4,D5 and D6 each containing 6 numbers like: D1[0] = number D2[0] = number ...... D6[0] = number D1[1] = another number D2[1] = another number .... ..... .... ...... .... D1[5] = yet another number .... ...... .... Given a second array ST1, containing 1 number: ST1[0] = 6 Given a third array ans, containing 6 numbers: ans[0] = 3, ans[1] = 4, ans[2] = 5, ......ans[5] = 8 Using as index for the arrays D1,D2,D3,D4,D5 and D6, the number that goes from 0, to the number stored in ST1[0] minus one, in this example 6, so from 0 to 6-1, compare each res array against each D array My algorithm so far is: I tried to keep everything unlooped as much as possible. EML := ST1[0] //number contained in ST1[0] EML1 := 0 //start index for the arrays D While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D2[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D3[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D4[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D5[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D6[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 //If the ans[0] number is not found in either D1[0-6], D2[0-6].... D6[0-6] return 0 which will then exclude ans[0-6] numbers two: EML1 := 0 start index for arrays Ds While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[1] goto three if D2[ELM1] = ans[1] goto three if D3[ELM1] = ans[1] goto three if D4[ELM1] = ans[1] goto three if D5[ELM1] = ans[1] goto three if D6[ELM1] = ans[1] goto three ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 //If the ans[1] number is not found in either D1[0-6], D2[0-6].... D6[0-6] return 0 which will then exclude ans[0-6] numbers three: EML1 := 0 start index for arrays Ds While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[2] goto four if D2[ELM1] = ans[2] goto four if D3[ELM1] = ans[2] goto four if D4[ELM1] = ans[2] goto four if D5[ELM1] = ans[2] goto four if D6[ELM1] = ans[2] goto four ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 //If the ans[2] number is not found in either D1[0-6], D2[0-6].... D6[0-6] return 0 which will then exclude ans[0-6] numbers four: EML1 := 0 start index for arrays Ds While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[3] goto five if D2[ELM1] = ans[3] goto five if D3[ELM1] = ans[3] goto five if D4[ELM1] = ans[3] goto five if D5[ELM1] = ans[3] goto five if D6[ELM1] = ans[3] goto five ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 //If the ans[3] number is not found in either D1[0-6], D2[0-6].... D6[0-6] return 0 which will then exclude ans[0-6] numbers five: EML1 := 0 start index for arrays Ds While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[4] goto six if D2[ELM1] = ans[4] goto six if D3[ELM1] = ans[4] goto six if D4[ELM1] = ans[4] goto six if D5[ELM1] = ans[4] goto six if D6[ELM1] = ans[4] goto six ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 //If the ans[4] number is not found in either D1[0-6], D2[0-6]....   • Handles Comparison: empty classes vs. undefined classes vs. void*

    - by Nawaz
    Microsoft's GDI+ defines many empty classes to be treated as handles internally. For example, (source GdiPlusGpStubs.h) //Approach 1 class GpGraphics {}; class GpBrush {}; class GpTexture : public GpBrush {}; class GpSolidFill : public GpBrush {}; class GpLineGradient : public GpBrush {}; class GpPathGradient : public GpBrush {}; class GpHatch : public GpBrush {}; class GpPen {}; class GpCustomLineCap {}; There are other two ways to define handles. They're, //Approach 2 class BOOK; //no need to define it! typedef BOOK *PBOOK; typedef PBOOK HBOOK; //handle to be used internally //Approach 3 typedef void* PVOID; typedef PVOID HBOOK; //handle to be used internally I just want to know the advantages and disadvantages of each of these approaches. One advantage with Microsoft's approach is that, they can define type-safe hierarchy of handles using empty classes, which (I think) is not possible with the other two approaches. What else? EDIT: One advantage with the second approach (i.e using incomplete classes) is that we can prevent clients from dereferencing the handles (that means, this approach appears to support encapsulation strongly, I suppose). The code would not even compile if one attempts to dereference handles. What else?
