  • JavaScript multithreading

    I'm working on comparison for several different methods of implementing (real or fake) multithreading in JavaScript. As far as I know only webworkers and Google Gears WorkerPool can give you real threads (ie. spread across multiple processors with real parallel execution). I've found the following methods: switch between tasks using yield() use setInterval() (or other non-blocking function) with threads waiting one for another use Google Gears WorkerPool threads (with plugin) use html5 web workers I read related questions and found several variations of the above methods, but most of those questions are old, so there might be a few new ideas. I'm wondering - how else can you achieve multithreading in JavaScript? Any other important methods? UPDATE: As pointed out in comments what I really meant was concurrency. UPDATE 2: I found information that Silverlight + JScript supports multithreading, but I'm unable to verify this.     Hello, I'm stuck with "Programming Clojure" on page 37 on a Windows 7 machine. After downloading the "examples" dir into "C:/clojure", I typed: user (require 'examples.introduction) and I got ; Evaluation aborted. java.io.FileNotFoundException: Could not locate examples/ introduction__init.class or examples/introduction.clj on classpath: (NO_SOURCE_FILE:0) My .emacs file looks like this: (setq swank-clojure-extra-classpaths (list "C:/Clojure")) The files in C:/Clojure are there (I triplechecked) Any help will be appreciated.

Part of the problem is that files written with fwrite are potentially nonportable between different machines." What does that mean exactly?     I would like to know more about the relevant skills in the arsenal of a Data Scientist, and with new technologies coming in every day, how one picks and chooses the essentials. A few ideas germane to this discussion: Knowing SQL and the use of a DB such as MySQL, PostgreSQL was great till the advent of NoSql and non-relational databases. MongoDB, CouchDB etc. are becoming popular to work with web-scale data. Knowing a stats tool like R is enough for analysis, but to create applications one may need to add Java, Python, and such others to the list. Data now comes in the form of text, urls, multi-media to name a few, and there are different paradigms associated with their manipulation. What about cluster computing, parallel computing, the cloud, Amazon EC2, Hadoop ? OLS Regression now has Artificial Neural Networks, Random Forests and other relatively exotic machine learning/data mining algos. for company Thoughts?

Are languages like C and Pascal faster than object oriented languages like C++ and Delphi? I know language speed depends more on compiler than on language itself, but do compilers for procedural languages produce faster code than OO ones (including C++ compilers that can produce C code)?

  • Mixed alignment with Java Swing's GroupLayout

    I'm trying to build a GUI window in my application. What I'm trying to do is have a window, with a few buttons at the top, and a large text area. Something like this: +--------------------------------------------------+ | [button1] [button2] [button3] | | +----------------------------------------------+ | | | text area | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +----------------------------------------------+ | +--------------------------------------------------+ I'm almost there, using GroupLayout: layout.setHorizontalGroup( layout.createParallelGroup() .addGroup(layout.createSequentialGroup() .addComponent(button1) .addComponent(button2)) .addComponent(closeWindow)) .addComponent(textarea1) ); layout.setVerticalGroup( layout.createSequentialGroup() .addGroup(layout.createParallelGroup() .addComponent(button1) .addComponent(button2) .addComponent(button3)) .addComponent(textarea) ); The problem is that this ends up with button3 aligned to the left, with the other two. I can't seem to figure out how I can specify the alignment on just that one button. I can do GroupLayout.Alignment.TRAILING on the entire button bar, but that hits all 3 buttons, which is also not quite right. So what's the correct approach? Since the alignment only applies for Parallel Groups, I don't think having a HorizontalGroup with two Sequential Groups in it will help? What am I missing?

  • Have minimized windows with a unique icon/color?

    Are there any programs or way to get a specific icon or any icon for that matter into a minimized window? The reason why I ask is that I hate having 3 or more windows of the same program minimized on my taskbar using the same icon. When I want to open up the program i'm not sure which window to activate. -edit I'm asking for a program to do this for me, not a programming technique
