• File system to choose for NAS box based on FreeNAS or OpenFiler [closed]

  I'm a photographer and I have a requirement find a better method of storing my photos other than multiple USB2 drives via USB hubs. Currently I use a Macbook Pro and 6 external drives connected via USB2 or FW800. 3 are a copy of the first three, kept up to day manually by running an rsync backup. I'd like to run a FreeNAS or OpenFiler NAS box using 2TB drives mirrored via software RAID. But - I would like to have the flexibility of also plugging into the drive physically for the faster throughput when necessary. So. My question is, is there a file system that both *nix and Mac OSX will play nice with? Many thanks, Chris.

• Webservice won't accept JSON requests

  Hi, The main issue is that I cannot run a webservice that accepts requests in JSON format. I keep getting a 500 Server error stating that the "request format is invalid." My ASP.NET AJAX extensions are installed. My server is running Plesk Control Panel 8.6 which is undoubtedly causing these problems. The default handler for this specified extension is shown in the web.config like so: For my applications webservice to handle JSON it needs to have this reference: <add name="ScriptHandlerFactory" verb="*" path="*.asmx" preCondition="integratedMode" type="System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptHandlerFactory, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/> Plesk is not allowing the request to be handled properly. I need to know the correct http directive(s) to put into the web.config to properly handle JSON webservices. I tried posting to the Plesk forum two days ago but no response yet. Any insight would be great =)

ToList().ForEach(x => Console.WriteLine(x)); and explained you can have (i) anonymous array (ii) extension method (iii)lambda and closure all in a single line.I got spot offer. But..... The interviewer asked me how will you convert an anonymous type into know type :( I am 100% sure ,we can not do that.The interviewer replied there is 200% chance to do that if you have a small work around.I was clueless. • Renaming and Moving Files in Bash or Perl

  HI, I'm completely new to Bash and StackOverflow. I need to move a set of files (all contained in the same folder) to a target folder where files with the same name could already exist. In case a specific file exists, I need to rename the file before moving it, by appending for example an incremental integer to the file name. The extensions should be preserved (in other words, that appended incremental integer should go before the extension). The file names could contain dots in the middle. Originally, I was thinking about comparing the two folders to have a list of the existing files (I did this with "comm"), but then I got a bit stuck. I think I'm just trying to do things in the most complicated possible way. Any hint to do this in the "bash way"? It's OK if it is done in a script other than bash script.

• Adding barcodes to pdfs

  is there any way to do something like a mail merge, where the data (9-15 chars long) is converted to a barcode? im using trying to use openoffice's code128 for calc, but for some reason, every 10 strings, the barcode goes crazy, and the ascii tells me to register at the site where the extension came from, which i dont want to do i also found one for oodraw, but that requires the values to be inputted manually. since im not familiar with the macros, i can't write something that will do it automatically what im trying to do is: take an old pdf (only 1 page) covert it to word or picture or something add a function/macro/whatever to show a barcode (whether or not the barcode shows in this file, i dont care), given a string from excel data reconvert to separate pdfs or some other way that adds barcodes to pdfs all other free programs i have found do not do this nicely, and since im not really a pdf person, im not going to buy random programs. i just need this done for one large batch of data

• How to install ferret gem on Windows 7 ?

  Hi, I was trying to run an OpenSource project which requires ferret to be installed. While installing it using gem install ferret, it's giving this error - Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing ferret: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. C:/Ruby/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile nmake 'nmake' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.11.6 for inspection. Results logged to C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.11.6/ext/gem_make.out So, I tried installing nmake (nmake15.exe), but the one I could find. It does not installs on Windows 7.Please help. • Stackless installation and configuration with DJango

  I am trying to run a DJango Command Extension which uses stackless. I have installed Stackless Python (compiled with python 2.5) so whenever I type python2.5 at the console it fires up indicating that the version is Python 2.5.2 Stackless 3.1b3 060516 (python-2.52:72942, May 26 2009, 23:07:34) [GCC 4.3.3] on linux2 But in my eclipse I have configured my django application to run with python2.6. Specifically in the PyDev settings. So obviously when I mention import stackless it says that there is no such package. The problem is even if I add the '/usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages' directory it does not import stackless. What is the solution to this issue ?

• Sniffing LPT Traffic

  I need to intercept LPT output traffic. After a couple of hours of research, I've come to understand that the only way to do this is by writing a kernel-mode driver, more precisely a "filter driver"...? I've downloaded the WDK, but the terminology and vast number of driver types is a little overwhelming. I'm basically trying to understand what kind of driver I should be writing; my target environment is Windows XP SP2 and 3 only. Some background info, if it matters: I have a bunch of legacy DOS apps that print to LPT1. I'd like to be able to capture this output and redirect this data (after GDI calls) to a modern USB (network) printer. Fortunately, the latter part of the problem's easy. I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction. TIA.

• Where's all the XPCOM user documentation?

  Google can't find much user documentation for XPCOM. Sure, it can find endless references to making new XPCOM components in C++, but that's utterly useless to anyone who needs to know how to use the existing components from JavaScript. This is a huge gap, occasionally touched on by trivial examples of creating an instance and calling a method. Has nobody with a more in-depth knowledge of the componentry written anything about its use? Using components with multiple interfaces? Implementing listeners for handling asynchronous behaviour? "Rapid Application Development with Mozilla" is no help (great breadth but little depth). Spotty references that exist to the defunct XULPlanet redirect to Mozilla Development Center, but that's pretty useless. Mozilla Development Center articles point back to XULPlanet, which is a joke. Is this the best an army of open source advocates can muster to promote the extension of The Beast?

• Is OO design's strength in semantics or encapsulation?

  Object-oriented design (OOD) combines data and its methods. This, as far as I can see, achieves two great things: it provides encapsulation (so I don't care what data there is, only how I get values I want) and semantics (it relates the data together with names, and its methods consistently use the data as originally intended). So where does OOD's strength lie? In constrast, functional programming attributes the richness to the verbs rather than the nouns, and so both encapsulation and semantics are provided by the methods rather than the data structures. I work with a system that is on the functional end of the spectrum, and continually long for the semantics and encapsulation of OO. But I can see that OO's encapsulation can be a barrier to flexible extension of an object. So at the moment, I can see the semantics as a greater strength. Or is encapsulation the key to all worthwhile code?

  I'm creating an iTunes clone in Cocoa (don't ask why, it's not evil) and I want to be able to sync my iPod with it. This means: music, photos, videos and podcasts. I couldn't really find anything, since Google only shows articles about iPod touch and iPhone programming, but I'm actually creating a desktop application for Mac OS X, and I also want to be able to sync click-wheel iPods. Is there an API or should I read and write directly to the USB port? Can anyone help me? Thanks

  Im working on a (Audio) DSP project and just wondering if there are any sample (Open source) DSP example that are written in c or c++, for my MSP430 Chip. Got requirement to implement localization for simple image button generated by JS: <img src="..." onclick="..." title="Close" /> What's the best technique to localize title of it? P.s. Found a solution by Ayende. This is the right direction. Edit: I got Localization helper class which provides Controller.Resource('foo') extension method. Thinking about to extend it (helper) so it could return all JavaScript resources (from "ClientSideResources" subfolder in App_LocalResources) for specified controller by it's name. Then - call it in BaseController, add it to ViewData and render it in Layout. Would that be a good idea?

  I've got an XElement deep within a document. Given the XElement (and XDocument?), is there an extension method to get its full (i.e. absolute, e.g. /root/item/element/child) XPath? E.g. myXElement.GetXPath()? EDIT: Okay, looks like I overlooked something very important. Whoops! The index of the element needs to be taken into account. • Ensure connection to a POSPrinter connected via COM

  Hi, I need to make sure that the connection to a POS printer is successful before writing data to the database and then printing a receipt. The POSprinter is normally of type BTP 2002NP but may differ. The common thing is that they are all connected via COM-port and NOT usb, so no drivers installed at all on the client. Can I send some kind of "ping" on a COM-port and check if a device is connected and turned on? Any help or suggestions are very much appreciated. Additional information, the application is developed in VB.net and Visual Studio 2008

• Visual C# | Capturing data from a window in a closed-source third-party Win32 application

  I'm planning on creating a C# Windows Forms app as an extension for a third-party Win32 application but I'm stumped as to how to do this right now. The farthest I've gotten is knowing it involves Win32 Hooking and that there's this open source project called EasyHook that's supposed to allow me to do this. I'd like to know how I can get the text from a textbox or some other data from a control in a third-party Win32 application. The text/data in a control is to be captured from the external application's running window the moment the user presses a button. I guess the question can be summed up as follows: How do you determine the event to hook to when the user clicks a certain button? How do you get the value displayed by a Win32 control at the time the button is clicked?

• Quick backup system for large projects

  I've always backed up all my source codes into .zip files and put it in my usb drive and uploaded to my server somewhere else in the world.. however I only do this once every two weeks, because my project is a little big. Right now my project directories (I have a few of them) contains a hierarchy of c++ files in it, and interspersed with them are .o files which would make backing up take a while if not ignored. What tools exist out there that will let me just back things up efficiently, conveniently and lets me specify which file types to back up (lots of .png, .jpg and some text types in there), and which directories to be ignored (esp. the build dirs)? Or is there any ingenious methods out there that people use?

  Hi, I have been writing Common Lisp macros, so Scheme's R5Rs macros are a bit unnatural to me. I think I got the idea, except that I don't understand how one would use vector patterns in syntax-rules: (define-syntax mac (syntax-rules () ((mac #(a b c d)) (let () (display a) (newline) (display d) (newline))))) (expand '(mac #(1 2 3 4))) ;; Chicken's expand-full extension shows macroexpansion => (let746 () (display747 1) (newline748) (display747 4) (newline748)) I don't see how I'd use a macro that requires its arguments to be written as a vector: (mac #(1 2 3 4)) => 1 4 Is there some kind of technique that uses those patterns? • Browser for cross-site-script testing (for testing Mozilla Add-On)

  I am working on a Firefox extension that will involve ajax calls to domains that would normally fail due to the same-origin policy set by Firefox (and most modern browsers). I was wondering if there is a way to either turn off the same-origin restriction (in about:config, perhaps) or if there was a standard lite-browser that developers turn to for this. I really would like to avoid using any blackhat tools, if possible. Not because I'm against them, I just don't want to add another learning curve to the process. I can use curl in PHP to confirm that the requests work, but I want to get started on writing the js that the addon will actually use, so I need a client that will execute js. I also tried spidermonkey, but since I'm doing the ajax with jquery, it threw a fit at all of the browser-based default variables. So, short version: is there a reliable browser/client for cross site scripting that isn't primarily a hacker app? Or can I just turn off same-domain policy in Firefox?

  I have a database in access 2007 accdb extension , there are more or less 30-40 tables with related primary key "local_number". it is a text primary key with 10 lenght. How can I change the length of this primary key to 30 WITHOUT delete previosly all the 30 relationship. 2,A similar question. I need add a compose primary key to my PK "local_number". I need Add a "Date" as composed PK. Then access just allow this if I first delete all relationships. How can Avoid this warning and change my PK ignoring this message.
