• GA tracking utm query params after hashbang

  We currently use a hashbang for the portion of our site that generates dynamic content which can also be deep linked. Our analytics team wants to use utm params to track the referral traffic from social networks. We are using Universal Analytics (analytics.js) as well as GTM. Will GA pick up the query parameters after the hashbang or does it always have to go before? For example: example.com/#!/some/content?utm_source=foo&utm_campaign=bar example.com?utm_source=foo&utm_campaign=bar/#!/some/content In #1, I'm concerned that the utm params won't be recorded and in #2 the page will break or the url could be incorrectly written. How does GA pull in those parameters - location.search? regex? Can I get away with using either?

• How can I generate signed distance fields in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-). • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Desktop 64 bit user permissions or apache2 rewrite problem

  have installed 12.04 Desktop 64 bit, manually installed LAMP, phpmyadmin, php5-dev,PEAR, PECL, apc, ssh, created user to own /var/www/ and transferred 3 sites to /www/. sites are in subfolders, sites - available all configured, and enabled. One site is pure html, two athers - php. Enabled curl, but phpmyadmin started at first, also php sites, than stopped working /show blank pages/ sites said Clean urls cannot be enabled. Html site still working. Where is the problem, and why the php sites stop working? In all apache .conf files Allow Override is set to ALL. php sites have .htaccess files. And this configuration worked with Ubuntu 10.04.

• Is it possible to power down my external via the eject button?

  I'm trying to convert from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome 3.6. Using the notification area's eject icon, I notice the partition is unmounted but the drive is still powered and spinning... I understand the latter can be taken care of by means of udisks --detach /dev/sdb I really don't want to have to run a command everytime I eject. Windows does the whole process when ejecting a medium via the systray. Is there a way I could add in the command to the eject button? Is there an appropriate place I could file a feature request? Little things like this are making it hard for me to swap back over to Linux. Thanks for the support!

• Problem with WindowsXp on VirtualBox in 12.10

  When I try to start it I get: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine WindowsXp. The virtual machine 'WindowsXp' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Machine Interface: IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91} and in another dialog: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. When I try to run: $ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup [sudo] password for umpirsky: sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found Any idea?

• SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • Why did this command make my Ubuntu more awesome than before?

  After running Ubuntu for months and liking it, I for the first time wanted to use headphones and was trying to get them to work so I ran the code in step 1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure -- the result was an improvement in performance, resolution, and audio.. a vast improvement. What does that suggest about what was wrong with my settings before if running this improved system performance, graphics, and my audio problem? • Where should people give feedback on Ubuntu?

  Many people have opinions or want to give feedback about Ubuntu. If they are simple bugs with a crash or display corruption, that's fine, they can file in Launchpad. But, comments about the design or concept of the system are more problematic. They come up all over the place, such as "Some Unity feedback" in other places that are not really about Unity. Ideally the answer will be a place where the comments will actually be read by the design team will tend to encourage people to read the existing comments and not post the same thing again and again perhaps will tend to bubble up good solutions rather than strange ideas will not be annoying to people who are trying to use that place for something else

  I'm in the process of trying to introduce Version/Revision Control to a team of developers who have never used it. I'll be giving a presentation that I hope will be a persuasive explanation of the importance of Version Control -- the benefits of using it and the liabilities of avoiding it. I'd like to kick it off with an amusing but instructive list modelled after the "redneck" line of jokes. Can anyone help me add to this list? "You know you're a Version Control Avoider if..." You have a bunch of files or folders with names like Engine_05212012_works_old[2].cpp You've had to explain to your boss how you accidentally overwrote production code. I don't consider myself terribly witty, but I think a little humor could be helpful in this situation. Any ideas for how to extend this list? [Bonus points if you can suggest a better moniker than "Version Control Avoider"]

• What do you do when one thinks the code isn't complicated enough?

  After six months of development on a project, our stakeholders have had a "gut check" and have decided that the path that we've been walking (a custom designed application framework and data access layer) is holding us (the developers) back from quickly developing the features they would like to see. After several days of debate management and the development team have decided to scrap the current incarnation and start over using ASP.net MVC, with Entity Framework as the bases of the a 'quick and dirty', lets just get it done project. In days following, our senior developer who has never worked with MVC or Entity Framework has finally gotten into a sample project and done some work. His take on ASP.net MVC, "this is not software engineering". So my question is this; what do you do, when one doesn't think the code is complicated enough?

• SEO Benefits of adding a Tumblr feed to site

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site? • Record and display Kinect audio and video via avconv

  I'm trying to record audio and video from a Kinect using avconv but I seem to have trouble specifying the right options. avconv -f video4linux2 -video_size 640x480 -c:v h264 -c:a ac3 -i /dev/video1 test.mp4 results in: avconv: /build/buildd/libav-extra-0.8.3ubuntu0.12.04.1/libav/libavutil/mathematics.c:79: av_rescale_rnd: Assertion `c > 0' failed. Aborted (core dumped) Cheese is perfectly happy recording the audio and video from the Kinect, so it's not a setup issue. For added fun, I also need to display the video at the same time.

• Why does Unity in 2d mode employ scaling and the default othographic size the way it does?

  I previously used SFML, XNA, Monogame, etc to create 2d games, where if I display a 100px sprite on the screen, it will take up 100px. If I use 128px tiles to create a background, the first tile will be at (0,0) while the second will be at (129,0). Unity on the other hand, has its own odd unit system, scaling on all transforms, pixel-to-units, othographic size, etc etc. So my question is two-fold, namely: Why does Unity have this system by default for 2d? Is it for mobile dev? Is there a big benefit I'm not seeing? How can I setup my environment, so that if I have a 128x128 sprite in Photoshop, it displays as a 128x128 sprite in Unity when I run my game? Note that I am targeting desktop exclusively.

• Using Google Analytics to determine how much time a visitor spends in each section of my site

  I have a site with various pages, like: /about/history /about/team /contact/email-us /contact I want to figure out how much time people are spending on the entire /about section, and how much on the /contact section. If I run a query on the Google Analytics API and set the dimension to ga:pagePathLevel1 and the metric to ga:avgTimeOnPage, I get results like this: { pagePathLevel1: /about, avgTimeOnPage: 28 }, { pagePathLevel1: /contact, avgTimeOnPage: 10 } This looks roughly like what I want, but I'm not sure how to intepret it: Is the value of avgTimeOnPage the average time spent by any user on all pages that match that path? Or is it the average time spent by any user on any single page that matches that path? I'm looking for the average time spent across all pages matching that path, but the time estimates look shorter than I'd expect.

• XNA: Runtime differences in ClickOnce install versus development version

  I have a game written in XNA, and I use ClickOnce installers to distribute the game to testers. I keep once computer as a test machine which does NOT have development environments installed, so that I can test the installed version. We've found a reproducible bug in our game, but the bug ONLY occurs on the non-development machines that use the ClickOnce installer. The bug is related to some of our code for moving around 3D objects and is not tied to Networking or GamerServices. Are there known differences in the ClickOnce runtime and the version on dev? Are there any best-practices for debugging something like this?
