• Select calls seems to not time out.

  HI Folks, I have a threaded C++ program where up to three threads are calling select on a three separate socket descriptors waiting for data to become available. Each thread handles one socket and adds it to the readfds with a timeout of 300 seconds. After select returns if there is data available I'm calling recv to read it. Is there anything that I need to be aware of with winsock and threads because for some reason after a number of hours the select calls all seem to be not timing out. Can a multi threaded program select from a number of threads without issue? I know that I should have one thread listening to all three sockets however that would be a large change for this app and I'm only looking to apply a bug fix. cheers, Martin.

• Nested for loop error with !null checking an element that doesn't exist

  I am currently using nested for loops in a 2D array of size 4,2. When I run my program, I get index out of bounds Exception on the following line else if (state[i][j+1] != null && state[i][j].getFlash() <= state[i][j].getCycleLength() && state[i][j+1].getCycleLength() == state[i][j].getCycleLength()){ } It says the index out of bounds is 2. I would understand the error if I wasn't checking to see if [i][j+1] wasn't null, but I don't understand the exception with the check? I tried moving around the !null check but the program still fails on this line. Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Stack Overflow Accessing Large Vector

  I'm getting a stack overflow on the first iteration of this for loop for (int q = 0; q < SIZEN; q++) { cout<<nList[q]<<" "; } nList is a vector of type int with 376 items. The size of nList depends on a constant defined in the program. The program works for every value up to 376, then after 376 it stops working. Any thoughts?

• Fastest way to find sum of digits on big numbers

  I have some big numbers (again) and i need to find if the sum of the digits is an even number. I tried this: finding the sum of the digits with a while loop and then checking if that sum % 2 equals 0 and it's working but it's too slow for big numbers, because i am given intervals of numbers and if the input is 1999999 19999999999 then my program fails, i cannot complete within the time limit which is 0,1 sec. What to do ? Is there any other faster way to do this ? EDIT: The input 1999999 19999999999 means it will start with 1999999 and check all the numbers like i wrote above until 19999999999, and because we are talking about big numbers (< 2^30) my program is not worthy.

• Best approach for using Scanner Objects in Java?

  Although I'm more of a C++/ASM guy, I have to work with java as a part of my undergrad course at college. Our teacher taught us input using Scanner(System.in), and told us that if multiple functions are were taking user input, it would be advisable that a single Scanner object is passed around so as to reduce chances of the input stream getting screwed up. Now using this approach has gotten me into a situation where I'm trying to use a Scanner.nextLine(), and this statement does not wait for user input. It just moves on to the following statement. I figured there may be some residual cr/lf or other characters in the Scanner that might not have been retrieved are causing the problem. Ok, so what happens when i run it is that when the program enters the if() the first time, It carries out theSystem.out.print, does not wait for user input, and moves on to the second time that it enters the 'if' block. This time, it takes the input and the rest of the program operates normally. What is even more surprising is that when i check the output file created by the program, it is perfect, just as i want to be. Almost as if the first time input using the scanner is correct. I have solved this problem by creating a new system.in Scanner in the function itself, instead of receiving the Scanner object as a parameter. But I am still very curious to know what the hell is happening and why it couldn't be solved using a simple Scanner.reset(). Would it be better to just simply create a Scanner Object for each function? Thanks, Devjeet PS. Although I know how to take input using fileinputstreams and the like, we are not supposed to use it with the homework.

  There are many open-source libraries that can be compiled with Visual Studio. I'm porting a program from Linux to Windows, but it depends on a number of libraries. I don't know what the best practices regarding libraries are on Windows. On Linux, these libraries are typically part of the distribution. To use sqlite on Debian, for example, you need only to install libsqlite3-dev and the include files and libraries (both static and dynamic) are automatically installed and available to your program. If you need a different version than your distribution supplies, you can compile it in your home directory, install it to ~/include and ~/lib, and set the appropriate environment variables so that your compiler includes those directories in its search path. What is the best way to use libraries that are distributed as source on Windows? If I link dynamically rather than statically, is there an easy way to copy required DLLs into the output directory to ease redistribution (assuming license requirements are met)?

  My program has the feature to export a hi-res image of the working canvas to the disk. Users will frequently try to export images of about 20,000 x 10,000 pixels @ 32bpp which equals about 800MB. Add that to the serious memory consumption already going on in your average 3D CAD program and you'll pretty much guarantee an out-of-memory crash on 32-bit platforms. So now I'm exporting tiles of 1000x1000 pixels which the user has to stitch together afterwards in a pixel editor. Is there a way I can solve this problem without the user doing any work? I figured I could probably write a small exe that gets command-lined into the process and performs the stitching automatically. It would be a separate process and it would thus have 2GB of ram all to itself. Or is there a better way still? I'd like to support jpg, png and bmp so writing the image as a bytestream to the disk is not really possible.

Enter new pi value (pi=3.14) : Enter new height value (h=30.0) : Usually I would write the first one with write statement, then read the new one (in Fortran, for example).   I'm new to python but I caught on to the basics pretty quick and decided to start trying to make a program while I'm still learning, since I learn best by actually doing things. So I'm making a program in python that will add polynomials and I need to see if a character from the parser is numeric im using the isdigit() command. Instead of having to type isdigit() all the time in my code such as n.isdigit(), I want to assign it to a variable t = 'isdigit()' and then type n.t. This doesn't work, so is there an alternative to not typing the whole command?

For example I got two packages: package program package sounds From inside the program/something.class I'd like to play the sounds/asound.wav.   I'm currently working on benchmarking a RESTful service I've made, and part of that is making sure it runs in a reasonable amount of times for a large array of parameters. For example, let's say I have RESTful API of the form some_site.com/item?item_id=y. In that case to be sure my service is working as fast as I'd like it to work, I'd want to try out many values for y one by one, preferably coming from some text file. I can't figure out any way of doing this in ab or httperf. I'm open to using a different benchmarking program if I have, but would prefer something simple and light. What I want to do seems like something pretty standard, so I'm guessing there must already be a program that let's me do it, but an hour or so of googling hasn't gotten me an answer. Ideas?

  Suppose you are creating a class with multiple .cpp files (which each contain the implementation of a member function) and have the class' declaration in a .h file. Also, each .cpp file includes the .h file via the include directive. I was told that if you change the implementation of any of the member functions (.cpp files) that you will have to recompile every .cpp file in order to run the program. That is, if I had 5 member functions (each implemented in a .cpp file) and I changed the implementation of 1 of the .cpp files I would have to compile the 1 .cpp file I changed AND the 4 other .cpp files I didn't change in order to correctly run my program. My question, if the previous statement is true, is why is the statement is true? Any insight on this concept would be helpful.

• qapps runs well but breakpoint sometimes generates segmentation fault

  I have a qApp that generates a segmentation fault only when a breakpoint is inserted in the code (I can put it at different places) and only after 4-5 breakpoint stops. Do I have a problem with my code or is this a DBG bug. the method is part of a QThread Class. Basically what I did is i took the mandlebrot example, and have 3 instances of it in my program. So the program would look like a mainwindow that has 3 mandlebrot widgets in it, one besides the other. Is it possible that GDB doesnt support debugging qthread subclasses that are instantiated multiple times or is it thread-unsafe to do so. I dont have any problems at run-time.

Pastebin API uses paste_code as its main data input, but it can use optional things like paste_name that sets the name of the upload or paste_private that sets it private.

  Let's say that there is a file that contains an unsorted list of student information, which includes a student ID number as well as other information. I want to make a program that retrieves student information based on student ID number. In order to make it efficient, I store the student IDs in a B-tree. So when I enter a student ID number, it searches the B-tree to see if its there or not. It also does one more thing. If it finds the student ID number, then it also returns where in the file that student's information is. This is the secondary key. The program uses this information to locate the rest of the student's information and prints it to screen. Can this be done? Is this how a b-tree works?

• Fastest way to move records from a oracle DB into MS sql server after processing

  Hi.. Ok this is the scenario...I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in MS SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a datareader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isnt slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. BUt when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. I have seen that most of the time consumed is in calling the stored procedure and waiting for it to return. Is there a better way of doing this? How does compiler know what class names are there in that library. Of course that information is present in binary format, I want to use that functionality in my program, to be specific I have a binary lib file and I want to know all classes and properties/functions present in that lib file. Is it possible ? If compiler can do that why can't some library ? thanks for any clue
