• How do I create a Windows Batch file that does not show the Command Prompt when executed?

  I have installed a ruby gem called Redcar, which is launched from the command line. When it runs, it steals the shell until it terminates, so I have to create a new shell window to continue doing command line work. The shell I'm using is the GITBash shell from MySysGit. I found a Redcar.bat file which is meant to launch Redcar as a shortcut, I presume, but I don't want the extra command prompt window to open whenever I launch the BAT file. How do I just run the BAT without seeing the prompt?

• Nagios plugin script not working as expected

  I have modified an off-the-shelf Nagios plugin perl script to (in theory) return a one or zero according to the existence, or not, of a file on a remote linux server. The script runs a remote ssh session and logs in as the nagios user. The remote linux servers have private keys setup for that user, and on the bash command line the script works as expected, but when run as a plugin it always returns '1' (true) even if the file does not exist. Some help with the logic or a comment on why things are not working as expected within Nagios would be appreciated. I'd prefer to use this ssh login method rather than having to install nrpe on all the linux servers. • I keep getting OpenSSL Header Version not found error when compiling OpenSSH Debian Squeeze

  I built Openssl1.0.0d ./config shared no-threads zlib It installed fine to the default /usr/local/ssl I went and downloaded OpenSSH 5.8p2 and ran ./configure but now it keeps giving me a Openssl version header not found error even when I set --with-ssl-dir= I've tried it with arguments /usr/local/ssl/include /usr/local/ssl/include/openssl /usr/include /usr/local/ssl/lib I looked in config.log and found error: openssl/opensslv.h: no such file or directory which makes little sense since I pointed openssh to where it is store. /etc/ld.so.conf include /usr/local/ssl/lib I'm at a loss at this point. Answer (maybe): Because I am an idiot. include /usr/local/ssl/lib is incorrect. /usr/local/ssl/lib is correct. It needs to be before the first include.

• IE9 Error: There was a pr?blem sending the command to the program

  I'm working on a new/fresh Windows 7 32bit machine that now has IE9 installed. The user is using the Dell Stardock application as his primary "desktop" (all his links there). When we place an internet link there and click on it we get the following error message: There was a problem sending the command to the program. To me this indicates that IE9 is having trouble going to the website we want to go to, which should get passed as a parameter to the browser when it opens. I don't think this is a StarDock/ObjectDock problem because we also have some other problems with internet links. For example, we cannot move an internet link from the Desktop to the Quick Launch on the task bar. When we do try, it forces us to put the link with the IE icon as part of the IE menu instead of allowing us to have a shortcut there as it's own entry. I should mention however, that links on the desktop and in the taskbar do work as we expect them too (without showing the above error message). It appears that this problem started after installing Windows Updates. Since we installed a whole bunch of updates at once I have no idea which one caused the problem. I did have Google Chrome installed but I uninstalled it since the user wants to use IE. The problem started before I uninstalled Chrome. I also reset the browser settings on IE9. It didn't help. Next I uninstalled IE9 which took me back to IE8. This actually did resolve the problem but the problem came back as soon as I installed IE9 again. We have Verizon Internet Security installed. It's actually a McAfee product rebranded to look like Verizon. I'm not real crazy over this software but the customer has a subscription so we're not planning to change it. I have no reason to believe that this is causing the problem and yet I know that security software is often to blame for strange issues. I've looked at the registry settings for the following keys and everything appears to be ok for every single one of them: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Application HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\ddeexec\Application HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft.Website\Shell\Open\Command Edit1: I've found two potential solutions but I won't be able to try them until tomorrow. One is to disable the "Windows Font Cache" service. Another is to clear IE cache and browsing history. I won't be able to try out either solution until tomorrow since this is a remote client's machine. I see there are lots of other suggestions online but if you take the time to read them through you'll see that the other suggestions didn't fix the problem.

• Make wix installation set upgrade to same folder

  How can I make a major upgrade to an installation set (MSI) built with Wix install into the same folder as the original installation? The installation is correctly detected as an upgrade, but the directory selection screen is still shown and with the default value (not necessarily the current installation folder). Do I have to do manual work like saving the installation folder in a registry key upon first installing and then read this key upon upgrade? If so, is there any example? Or is there some easier way to achieve this in MSI / Wix?   I need a software (for Windows) that finds duplicate images by comparing the actual image content. I have duplicates of images, once with metadata, one without, so the image is the same, but the file is not, so comparing the files byte by byte is not enough. Another requirement is, that I can delete all / several duplicates at once - I don't want to click 100 times "delete"! That is, what I actually would have to do using XnView ): I also checked the other topics here and Google, but if a programscompares the images in a perfect way (like XnView) it doesn't allow the deletion of several duplicates at once

• Ubuntu's garbage collection cron job for PHP sessions takes 25 minutes to run, why?

Here's my CPU usage graph: The cleanup running is represented by the teal spikes. At the beginning of the period, PHP's cleanup jobs were scheduled at the default 09 and 39 minutes times. At 15:00 I removed the 39 minute time from cron, so a cleanup job twice the size runs half as often (you can see the peaks get twice as wide and half as frequent). Here are the corresponding graphs for IO time: And disk operations: At the peak where there were about 14,000 sessions active, the cleanup can be seen to run for a full 25 minutes, apparently using 100% of one core of the CPU and what seems to be 100% of the disk IO for the entire period. Why is it so resource intensive? An ls of the session directory /var/lib/php5 takes just a fraction of a second. So why does it take a full 25 minutes to trim old sessions? Is there anything I can do to speed this up? The filesystem for this device is currently ext4, running on Ubuntu Precise 12.04 64-bit. EDIT: I suspect that the load is due to the unusual process "fuser" (since I expect a simple rm to be a damn sight faster than the performance I'm seeing). I'm going to remove the use of fuser and see what happens.

• Workaround broken sudo?

  I managed to break sudo by deleting the libc.so.6 sym-link in /lib. I copied the actual file and created a symbolic link with the same name under my home directory by using LD_PRELOAD=/lib/libc-2.11.3.so. At this point, all binaries linking libc are working through preload except sudo. For sudo, I need to write (and don't know why): $ /lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 --library-path . /usr/bin/sudo but this gives me: $ sudo: must be setuid root Checking the permissions: $ ls -l /usr/bin/sudo $ -rwsr-xr-x 2 root root 166120 So the setuid bit is actually set. Question: I need to create a symbolic link named /lib/libc.so.6 through my active ssh connection without using sudo, or, make sudo work somehow. I don't have the root password and I can't connect through ssh anymore. Is there any other way I can get authorization?

  I run Perl/Tk or WWW::Mechanize just fine using terminal but when I try to invoke the interpreter through Emacs shell (M-!), it dies with a message: Can't locate tk.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.12.4 /usr/local/share/perl/5.12.4 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.12 /usr/share/perl/5.12 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at perl-tk.pl line 2. Obviously, this array @INC doesn't hold the path to my modules, the question is, how can I do that? I didn't find anything on emacs manual. I also googled it but to no avail.

  I'm running ubuntu 11.04. I'm trying to install the latest "eclipse for java developers" IDE (version Indigo 3.7.1). I have downloaded and extracted it.   With the availability of Oracle UPK 3.6.1 and Enablement Service Pack 1 for Oracle UPK 3.6.1 (Oracle Support login required for both), there are quite a few changes for content admins to absorb. In addition to the support added for dozens of application releases, patches and new target applications, we've also added features to make implementing and using In-Application Support even easier. First, the old Help Menu Integration Guides have been updated and combined into a single In-Application Support Guide. If you integrate UPK content for user assistance, or if you're interested in doing so, read the new guide! It covers all the integration steps, including a section on the new In-Application Support Configuration Utility. If you've integrated content in multiple languages, or if you've ever had to make configuration changes for UPK Help Integration, then you know how cumbersome it was to manually edit javascript files. No longer! The Player now includes a configuration utility that provides a web browser interface for setting all In-Application Support options. From the main screen, you see a list of applications covered by the published content. Clicking on an application name takes you to the edit configuration screen where you can set all Player options for that application. No more digging through the Player folders to find the right javascript file to edit. No complicated javascript syntax to make changes. And with Enablement Service Pack 1 we've added a new feature we're calling the Tabbed Gateway. The Tabbed Gateway is a top-level navigation bar for Help Integration. And all tabs, links, and text are controlled with the Configuration Utility... I think the Tabbed Gateway is a really cool and exciting feature for content launch.   The question of how to remove the version information from the desktop has been around for a long time. It came up again today. The question is about the string displayed on the desktop that looks like one of these, depending on the OS verison: Windows Embedded CE v6.00 (Build xxxx on xxxx) Microsoft Windows CE v5.00 (Build xxxx on xxxx) Microsoft Windows CE .NET v4.20 (Build xxxx on xxxx) I have looked into this in the past, but never really had a definitive answer. I have an answer now. The short answer is that the version information is displayed if the code is built without SHIP_BUILD defined.  I have to be honest, I have given this answer in the newsgroups in the past, but I still had questions. My questions have come from different build machines giving different results.   I have noticed that some engineer’s workstations would have the version information displayed, while others did not. I always stopped short of spending time investigating further because our release build machines never resulted in the version information being displayed. But, we do not typically define SHIP_BUILD for our releases because our customers want or need the debug output. So today I dug further into the question. The answer is actually quite simple. Microsoft builds the retail shell libraries with SHIP_BUILD defined and releases the libraries with Platform Builder. Normally the source code does not need to be built during Sysgen, so the libraries that Microsoft delivered are linked to create the Explorer shell. So typically the Explorer shell displays the version information for debug builds, but does not for retail builds. The trouble comes when the source code is forced to be rebuilt for a retail build. This might happen if an engineer uses “Build and Sysgen” or builds the Public\Shell folder from the command line with the clean flag. I am not sure if Build and Sysgen will cause the problem or not – I have never used Build and Sysgen and I strongly advise against using it (see Platform Builder: Don’t use Build and Sysgen) Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

• Cant add network printer with system-config-printer package

  Hello im new here and I dont know if im doing it right but I hope yes. I have a printer conected to a windows 8 machine, also I had ubuntu 13.04 and it worked fine when I printed from linux to windows but when I upgraded to 13.10 my printer didnt worked, I removed it thinking that would fix it but when I tryed to add the printer again I couldnt, I reinstalled cups and the system-config-printer-gnome package but didnt worked. • Trying to get MythTV working in Kubuntu 10.10

• indirect rendering issue on 12.04, using ati driver
