• Error installing TFS in Windows 8

  Trying to install TFS on my computer in order to make a demonstration. I can't figure out what else can I do to solve these errors: Information [ System Checks ] TF255142: Windows Firewall is not enabled. If you enable Windows Firewall after configuring Team Foundation Server, you must add exceptions for ports used by Team Foundation Server to Windows Firewall. Error [ Application Tier ] TF255120: Compatibility mode for Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 is not enabled. Team Foundation Server requires this on this operating system. Error [ Application Tier ] TF255456: You must configure Internet Information Services (IIS) to use the Static Content component. Team Foundation Server requires the Static Content component in IIS. Error [ Application Tier ] TF255397: Windows Authentication has not been configured as a role service in Internet Information Services (IIS). Team Foundation Server requires that Windows Authentication is installed as one of the role services in IIS. • "Error in the Site Data Web Service." when performing crawl

  Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. (Value does not fall within the expected range.), but this is not the case as thats an old issue and i hope it has been included in SP2... Logs are from olders to newest (descending order). They don't appear to be very helpful. • TSM Backup Fails with VSS

  Since we rebuilt our servers to windows servers 2008 x64 r2 we have perpetual problems with scheduled backup (shadow copy). In the Application event log, the following events are logged on both nodes: The description for Event ID 4112 from source TsmVssPlugin cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: VSS processing encountered error 'VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR' in the Volume Shadow Copy API 'AddToSnapshotSet'. For more information, see the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client error log. Re installing TSM didn't change anything and still logging same events. TSM Error log file shows following: ANS1327W The snapshot operation for 'C:' failed with error code: -1. ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered. • VSS error 521 when attempting backup

  Hi, I have backupassist and I attempt to run a backup, with VSS service running. However, I get this error in Windows Event Log: The backup operation that started at '?2010?-?04?-?30T01:51:15.601000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved. Code: 521. The error in backupassist is: The backup operation stopped before completing. Detailed error: ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x80042336) The writer experienced a partial failure. Check the component level error state for more information. • Internet Explorer 8 crashes on Citrix, Windows 2003

  Difficult to decide where this Q fits best. It's server-related and programming-related. But it's a user-problem so I'll put it here, first... I work on a (Delphi) application that uses an Internet Explorer component to show information to the user. It's not a web application, just a desktop application which creates HTML pages to display them within a browser component. Some of the information on these webpages are retrieved from a web server, while other information is provided "live" by the application itself. It works quite well, but it adds an IE-process (child process) next to my application. And this IE process seems to eat a lot of system resources. For normal users, this is not a real problem, so it's not an issue that I want to fix in the code. But one customer of this application uses it with about 100 users on a Citrix/Windows 2003 environment and they complain about problems with the application. IE8 tends to crash, not show, hang or cause other mayhap. Then again, I've warned them that -officially- I won't support any Citrix environment. But I'm willing to help them to find a solution to fix this, and if need be I could make minor changes to my code to help fix this issie. (If possible.) But basically, I need a solution that any user/administrator on this Citrix environment can follow/use. Any ideas on how to resolve this resource problem?

  I currently set up a script to restart my http servers + php5 fpm but can't get it to work. I have googled and have found that mostly permissions are the problems of my error but can't figure it out.   I keep receiving the following error when trying to run MikTeX 2.8 or Visual Studio 2008 on 64-Bit Windows Vista. It's particularly odd because both programs were working problem free until a few days ago. The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail. Opening the Application log provides the following information: Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.8\miktex\bin\texworks.exe". Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.8\miktex\bin\Microsoft.VC90.CRT.MANIFEST" on line 4. Component identity found in manifest does not match the identity of the component requested. Reference is Microsoft.VC90.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.30729.4148". Definition is Microsoft.VC90.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.30729.1". Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis. It looks like the problem is with Microsoft.VC90.CRT.MANIFEST, but I am not sure why or how to fix this problem. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Visual Studio and MikTeX, as well as uninstalling/reinstalling Microsoft's C++ Redistributable, but nothing seems to be fixing this problem.

• Can reprepro accept a new version of a package into the repository?

  I have installed a package into my own debian package repository like so: $ sudo reprepro -b /var/packages/ubuntu includedeb maverick my-package_0.8-0_all.deb my-package_0.8-0_all.deb: component guessed as 'main' Exporting indices... I have installed my package on a few machines using apt-get install. I have now added new features to my software and would like to add a new minor version of my package to the repository so that I may update my machines using apt-get upgrade. I try to do this like so: $ sudo reprepro -b /var/packages/ubuntu includedeb maverick my-package_0.9-0_all.deb my-package_0.9-0_all.deb: component guessed as 'main' Skipping inclusion of 'my-package' '1.0-0' in 'maverick|main|i386', as it has already '1.0-0'. Skipping inclusion of 'my-package' '1.0-0' in 'maverick|main|amd64', as it has already '1.0-0'. It looks like I need to tell reprepro that this is a new version of the same package but I have no idea how to do this. I have read the reprepro man page several times and searched on the net for a couple of hours but I have not found any answers. Am I missing something? Many thanks.

• Create App_Data and register Excel application on ASP.NET deployment? (IIS7.5)

  I am deploying an ASP.NET MVC3 application in IIS7. I already deployed other applications but they never made use of the App_Data folder or any additional component such as the Interop library. I used the one click deployement and I sue the default application pool. When I launch the application I immediately get an error stating: [web access] Sorry, an error occurred while processing your request. [browse from IIS7] Could not find a part of the path 'D:\Data\Apps\OppUpdate\App_Data\Test.xlsx'. Then I manually added the App_Data folder inside the deployment directory and the application starts regularly. Then when it comes to the taks that uses the Interop library, I get the following error: [web access] Sorry, an error occurred while processing your request. [browse from IIS7] Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80040154 Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG)). There have been a few minor issues, but this one has me stuck. Trying to populate Full-Text indexes is not working. • WS 2008 R2 giving "Internal Server Error"

  I have had this problem for a while now and can't find the problem at all. When i open a page it will sometimes give a 500 Internal Server Error message. This hapens on a website that works perfectly but when i try to upload anything it will give this message(all php settings have been set to either 1gb or 3000 seconds as well as the iis headers). Also when i open a simple page which does nothing more than include another php page and include a couple of classes the error will occur. I have no idea what causes this error and would love to hear from any of you on what this could be. I checked the server logs and for the upload issue i found this error: The description for Event ID 1 from source named cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.   Hello all, I'm getting a BSOD / system crash (sometimes the PC just quits without a BSOD). Hardware Specifications cpu: i7 920 2666MHz / 8 cores (not OCed afaik) mobo: Asus P6T SE ram: 2x Corsair CM3X2G1333C9 (64bit DDR3 667MHz) gfx: ATI Radeon HD 5970 1GB (XFX HD5970 BE) os: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (legit) All bios, firmware and drivers are all up to date (as of today). Symptoms Sometimes the PC runs smoothly, sometimes I get this BSOD. The BSOD always happens when I'm doing something related to graphics, such as viewing a video or playing a game. I get to know about the imminent BSOD ~10 seconds earlier; the PC starts freezing occasionally but increasing in frequency and length of lag (I noticed processor usage in creased from Process Monitor). I've tweaked BIOS settings occasionally but afaik, it was in vain. A day or so ago, I reset it to factory settings. BSOD contents The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000101 (0x0000000000000019, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff88001f35180, 0x0000000000000004). 15-12-2010 A fatal hardware error has occurred. • What do you upgrade to make games load faster? [on hold]

  Let's say you have a relatively modern game like Shogun 2. The loading screens take several minutes. This bothers you and you'd like to improve it. What is actually going on when loading screens are up? I'm guessing assets are being loaded into memory from disk, and possibly being decompressed first. However, what is actually causing the slow down? The memory? Mainboard? CPU? HDD? If you had $100 to spend on upgrades and your only goal is to speed up loading screens without reducing other performance, what component of the computer does it make sense to upgrade for maximum benefit? If your answer is "it depends on the existing setup", what sort of benchmarks would you run to determine what is causing the bottleneck? What if you had $500 instead? I give the two budgets for context. I am not asking for actual recommendations about which component to buy (nor are the numbers supposed to be rigid limits), but what features are important when shopping for components with small and large budgets (a large budget could allow buying multiple components which are not so good on their own, but work particularly well together). I mention Shogun 2 as an example, but I'm asking about reducing overall loading times, across all games, not just one game. Therefore, "put it on a solid state disk" probably won't be good solution, because putting every game on your SDD will quickly fill it up.

• Constant crashes in windows 7 64bit when playing games

  I've tried everything I can possibly think of in trying to fix this problem and I'm totally out of ideas, so any help would be appreciated: The problem: whenever I fire up a game, it works for a short while with no problems and then it would crash. Either its a hard crash, forcing me to reboot, or windows would report that the display driver has stopped working and recovered. Here is a list of things I've already tried: Drivers - tried the latest drivers (catalyst 9.12) as well as the stock drivers that came with the video card. Also have the latest BIOS/chipset Memtest - Ran Memtest86+ overnight, had no problems, the windows diagnostic tool also does not find any problems. Overheating - Video card/cpu temperatures are well below peak (42 and 31 Celsius receptively) PSU Voltage - CPUID shows that the voltage levels are all above what they should be.   We installed a clustered SQL 2005 installation on windows 2008 and reattached our san drives from another machine and restored to do a migration to new hardware. There have been a few minor issues, but this one has me stuck. Trying to populate Full-Text indexes is not working. • Moving the swapfiles to a dedicated partition in Snow Leopard

  I have been able to move Apple's virtual memory swapfiles to a dedicated partition on my hard drive up until now. The technique I have been using is described in a thread on forums.macosxhints.com. However, with the developer preview of Snow Leopard, this method no longer works. Does anyone know how it could be done with the new OS? Update: I have marked dblu's answer as accepted even though it didn't quite work because he gave excellent, detailed instructions and because his suggestion to use plutil ultimately pointed me in the right direction. The complete, working solution is posted here in the question because I don't have enough reputation to edit the accepted answer. Complete solution: 1. Open Terminal and make a backup copy of Apple's default dynamic_pager.plist: $ cd /System/Library/LaunchDaemons $ sudo cp com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist{,_bak} 2. Convert the plist from binary to plain XML: $ sudo plutil -convert xml1 com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist 3. Open the converted plist with your text editor of choice. If you run into trouble, switch to verbose startup mode by holding down Command-v immediately after the startup chime. This will let you see all of the startup messages that appear during startup. If you run into even worse trouble (i.e. you never see the login screen), hold down Command-s instead. This will boot the computer in single-user mode (no graphical UI, just a command prompt) and allow you to restore the backup copy of com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist that you made in step 1. 12. Once the computer boots, fire up Terminal and verify that the swap files have actually been moved: $ cd /Volumes/Swap/.vm $ ls -l You should see something like this: -rw------- 1 someUser staff 67108864 18 Sep 12:02 swapfile0 13. Delete the old swapfiles: $ cd /private/var/vm $ sudo rm swapfile* 14. Profit! Note 1 Simply modifying the arguments to dynamic_pager in the plist does not always work, and when it fails, it does so in a spectacularly silent way. The problem stems from the fact that dynamic_pager is launched very early in the startup process. If your swap partition has not yet been mounted when dynamic_pager is first loaded (in my experience, this happens 99% of the time), then the system will fake its way through. It will create a symbolic link in your /Volumes directory which has the same name as your swap partition, but points back to the default swapfile location (/private/var/vm). Then, when your actual swap partition mounts, it will be given the name Swap 1 (or YourDriveName 1). You can see the problem by opening up Terminal and listing the contents of your /Volumes directory: $ cd /Volumes $ ls -l You will see something like this: drwxrwxrwx 11 yourUser staff 442 16 Sep 12:13 Swap -> private/var/vm drwxrwxrwx 14 yourUser staff 5 16 Sep 12:13 Swap 1 lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1 17 Sep 12:01 System -> / Note that this failure can be very hard to spot. If you were to check for the swapfiles as I show in step 12, you would still see them! The symbolic link would make it seem as though your swapfiles had been moved, even though they were actually being stored in the default location. Note 2 I was originally unable to get this to work in Snow Leopard because com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist was stored in binary format. I made a copy of the original file and opened it with Apple's Property List Editor (available with Xcode) in order to make changes, but this process added some extended attributes to the plist file which caused the system to ignore it and just use the defaults. As dblu pointed out, using plutil to convert the file to plain XML works like a charm. Note 3 You can check the Console application to see any messages that dynamic_pager_init echos to the screen. If you see the following lines repeated over and over again, there is a problem with the setup. I ran into these messages because I forgot to create the '.vm' directory that I specified in dynamic_pager_init. com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.dynamic_pager[176]) Exited with exit code: 1 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.dynamic_pager) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds When everything is working properly, you may see the above message a couple of times, but you should also see the following message, and then no more of the "Throttling respawn" messages afterwards. com.apple.dynamic_pager[???] Launching dynamic pager on volume Swap This means that the script did have to wait for the partition to load, but in the end it was successful.

• IIS7 Binary Stream Error

  I'm struggling to understand the problem I'm seeing so please accept my apology if the question is vague. I'm running a classic asp app in IIS7 and everything seems to work fine except for one issue that has me stumped. Basically, files can be downloaded from the server which is done using the sendBinary method of Persits ASP Upload component. This component works fine for uploading etc it's just the downloading I have a problem. The strange thing is, I cannot have a pure asp page that serves the binary file. Everything works fine in II6, but in II7 there is a strange problem. For example this does not work. <% SET objUpload = server.createObject("Persits.Upload") objUpload.sendBinary "D:\sites\file.pdf", true, "application/octet-binary", true SET objUpload = NOTHING %> However, if I put anything in front of the asp code the file is served fine. serve this <% SET objUpload = server.createObject("Persits.Upload") objUpload.sendBinary "D:\sites\file.pdf", true, "application/octet-binary", true SET objUpload = NOTHING %> I can also write something to the response stream first and it works fine. <% Response.Write("server this") SET objUpload = server.createObject("Persits.Upload") objUpload.sendBinary "D:\sites\file.pdf", true, "application/octet-binary", true SET objUpload = NOTHING %> Does anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this or has anyone ran into a similar situation? • Copy one db diagram from one db to another on different servers? (Same db)

  I used the copy database wizard to copy my database from our test server to our production server, the database copied everything fine except for the diagram. Okay no problem, first I make sure the target database on production has the support objects created to use database diagraming. Then I select to import data from the other database and chose the dbo.sysdiagrams.Go through with the rest of the import data wizard, but then I get the following error: Validating (Error) Messages Error 0xc0202049: Data Flow Task: Failure inserting into the read-only column "diagram_id". (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc0202045: Data Flow Task: Column metadata validation failed. (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc004706b: Data Flow Task: "component "Destination - sysdiagrams" (31)" failed validation and returned validation status "VS_ISBROKEN". (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc004700c: Data Flow Task: One or more component failed validation. (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc0024107: Data Flow Task: There were errors during task validation. (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) So apparently it didn't like that. • Why do manufacturers not show all hardware power usage?

  I find it slightly more difficult to build a computer when I do not know how much power is needed for a component. When selecting a power supply for a computer, it is difficult to know how large of one to get. You don't want to go too large for cost reasons and circuit reasons, but you don't want to go too low and not be able to properly use every component. For instance, a graphics card might say "Minimum of a 500 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 30 Amps.)" But it really needs 360W (12V * 30A). So why don't they just say "Uses 360W max and xxxW peak"? Processors, I have noticed are good at reporting their power usage, but aside from processors and sometimes graphics cards, power usage is easily found. What is the power consumed by the Blu-ray / DVD drives? By the HDDs/SSDs? By the Mobo? etc. Why are these questions not easily answered when building a machine?

• Standards for documenting/designing infrastructure

  We have a moderately complex solution for which we need to construct a production environment. There are around a dozen components (and here I'm using a definition of "component" which means "can fail independently of other components" - e.g. an Apache server, a Weblogic web app, an ftp server, an ejabberd server, etc). There are a number of weblogic web apps - and one thing we need to decide is how many weblogic containers to run these web apps in. The system needs to be highly available, and communications in and out of the system are typically secured by SSL Our datacentre team will handle things like VLAN design, racking, server specification and build. So the kinds of decisions we still need to make are: How to map components to physical servers (and weblogic containers) Identify all communication paths, ensure all are either resilient or there's an "upstream" comms path that is resilient, and failover of that depends on all single-points of failure "downstream". Decide where to terminate SSL (on load balancers, or on Apache servers, for instance). My question isn't really about how to make the decisions, but whether there are any standards for documenting (especially in diagrams) the design questions and the design decisions. It seems odd, for instance, that Visio doesn't have a template for something like this - it has templates for more physical layout, and for more logical /software architecture diagrams. So right now I'm using a basic Visio diagram to represent each component, the commms between them with plans to augment this with hostnames, ports, whether each comms link is resilient etc, etc. This all feels like something that must been done many times before. Are there standards for documenting this?

• Windows 7: Moving Program Files location during install using unattend.xml

  I am planning on using an unattend.xml to create a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit setup with Users and ProgramData on a 2nd drive. I have found many samples of how to do this (see below). However I would also like to move Program Files to a 3rd drive as well. i.e.: C:\Windows [SSD] D:\Users [HDD1] D:\ProgramData [HDD1] P:\Program Files [HDD2] P:\Program Files (x86) [HDD2] I have found that this was possible using unattend.txt in XP but all documentation or examples I find about Win 7 only mention Users and ProgramData, not Program Files. Is this possible using an answer file?
