I've been looking everywhere but I've only found mod_log_rotate. The "little" problem is that the author (very good C developper) explains: "Unfortunately Apache error logs are handled in such a way that we can't work the same log rotation magic on them. Like transfer logs they support piped logging though so you can still use rotatelogs for them. " So my question is: what would be the best way to handle multiple logs? If I just do a very classical log and I use the system's "logrotate" program couldn't this be a good deal? How would/do you deal with that? Thank you!

  I am very new to Fluent NHibernate and I have a problem that I cant find the answer to. I have a string column in my database table, containing a mathematical expression i.e: "10 + 15 * 5". On my entity I have a property that I call Formula and this returns a class that contains the mathematical "formula" (not as a string). I beleive this post http://intellect.dk/post/Implementing-custom-types-in-nHibernate.aspx explains how to solve it for NHibernate. But I am not sure... How do I get this working with Fluent NHibernate?

• How do I call a function name that is stored in a hash in Perl?

  I'm sure this is covered in the documentation somewhere but I have been unable to find it... I'm looking for the syntactic sugar that will make it possible to call a method on a class whose name is stored in a hash (as opposed to a simple scalar): use strict; use warnings; package Foo; sub foo { print "in foo()\n" } package main; my %hash = (func => 'foo'); Foo->$hash{func}; If I copy $hash{func} into a scalar variable first, then I can call Foo->$func just fine... but what is missing to enable Foo->$hash{func} to work? (EDIT: I don't mean to do anything special by calling a method on class Foo -- this could just as easily be a blessed object (and in my actual code it is); it was just easier to write up a self-contained example using a class method.) • Filling in a multi-choice field in a Sharepoint Doc-Lib using SetDocsMetaInfo Frontpage Server Extentions RPC method

  I've been given a big chunk of code which eventually calls upon the SetDocsMetaInfo method from Frontpage Server Extension RPC. This is easy enough for most document uploading and property updating, except when dealing with multichoice fields. I've been scouring through MSDN and I can't find anything on how to fill in multiple values for such a field. The general syntax for properties is something like this: [SR|default], with the type (string in this case) followed by a pipe and then the value to be written. • Parantheses around method invokation: why is the compiler complaining about assignment?

  I know why the following code doesn't compile: public class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { main((null)); // this is fine! (main(null)); // this is NOT! } } What I'm wondering is why my compiler (javac 1.6.0_17, Windows version) is complaining "The left hand side of an assignment must be a variable". I'd expect something like "Don't put parantheses around a method invokation, dummy!", instead. So why is the compiler making a totally unhelpful complaint about something that is blatantly irrelevant? Is this the result of an ambiguity in the grammar? A bug in the compiler? If it's the former, could you design a language such that a compiler would never be so off-base about a syntax error like this?

In FF, the code works perfectly, in IE8 I get the error: 'ResourceList[...].id' is null or not an object. • I get NaN when I try to insert some HTML into a DIV element with jQuery

  I am tring to display a text box when a element of class numObj is clicked. For some reason I get NaNNaNaNaNNaNNaNaNaN where I expect to the see the result of the searchForm variable in the code below. I know that NaN stands for Not a Number. What I don't understand is why is Javascript expecting a number?   Is there a way to prevent Windows Media Player from connecting to the internet and MS using the hosts file or other methods? Edit: (Nov 20 2009 at 19:16) I have both VLC and MPC and I do use them. However I am currently using WMP to organize all my music and I hate that WMP is always making outgoing connections. I just tried TCPView and can't believe how many connections WMP makes when you first launch it. I have even disabled everything in its options that relates to connecting to internet. Could any of you recommend a good media player thats also good for organizing your music library like WMP, and doesnt connect to the internet? Preferably one that a WMP user would actually like as much as WMP. The reason I use WMP is because I like its interface, the way its setup and how it looks.

• Best method of including an abstract in a latex 'book'?

  Hello there. I've been looking for the answer to this question for a while now but can't seem to find it, so I'm hoping someone on here can help me. I'm writing up a thesis in Latex, and really like the \frontmatter, \mainmatter and \backmatter ability when using the "book" environment. However I need to add an abstract and the \begin{abstract} environment is undefined when creating a "book". If I change to a "report" however, I lose the functionality of the *matter terms. So what I really need to know is: is there a simple method of including an abstract in a "book" and have it formatted the same as it would be in a "report"? (i.e. centered vertically and horizontally with an 'abstract' heading) Thanks for any help! First post on stackoverflow after reading for months!

• Opinions sought on the best way to organise classes in PHP

  I am pretty much set on using the Java package naming convention of com.website.app.whatever but am unsure about the best way of doing this in PHP. Option 1: Create a directory structure com/ mysite/ myapp/ encryption/ PublicKeyGenerator.class.php Cipher.class.php Xml/ XmlHelper.class.php XmlResponse.class.php Now this is how Java does it, it uses the folders to organize the heirarchy. This is however a little clumsy in PHP because there is no native support for it and when you move things around you break all includes. Option 2 Name classes using a periods for the package, therefore sames are just like in Java but can all be in the same directory making __autoload a breeze. classes/ com.mysite.myapp.encription.PublicKeyGenerator.class.php com.mysite.myapp.encription.Cipher.class.php com.mysite.myapp.xml.XmlHelper.class.php com.mysite.myapp.xml.XmlResponse.class.php The only real disadvantage here is that all the classes are in a single folder which might be confusing for large projects. Opinions sought, which is the best or are there other even better options?

• Is there such a thing as a C# style extension method in C++ ?

  I'm currently learning C++ and i run into the simple problem of converting an int to a string. I've worked around it using: string IntToString(int Number) { stringstream Stream; Stream << Number; return Stream.str(); } but though it would be more elegant to use something like: int x = 5; string y = x.toString(); but how do i add the toString() method to a built in type? or am i missing something totally fundamental?

• Fast, Vectorizable method of taking floating point number modulus of special primes?

  Is there a fast method for taking the modulus of a floating point number? With integers, there are tricks for Mersenne primes, so that its possible to calculate y = x MOD 2^31 without needing division. Can any similar tricks be applied for floating point numbers? Preferably, in a way that can be converted into vector/SIMD operations, or moved into GPGPU code. The primes I'm interested in would be 2^7 and 2^31, although if there are more efficient ones for floating point numbers, those would be welcome.

  I am working through a book about Javascript and have encountered the following example of code designed to replace the value of the class attribute of a table header HTML element: th.className = th.className.replace(/asc/,"dsc"); th.className = th.className.replace(/dsc/,"asc"); Why is the first parameter of .replace, the current value of th.className, enclosed in forward slashes instead of quotation marks? Why not use quotation marks to enclose both parameters, not just the second one? Thank you in advance for any help given. • Jquery counting elements by class what is the best way to implement this?

  Ok what i'm trying to do is to count all of the elements in the current page with the same class and then i'm going to use it to be added onto a name for a input form. Basically i'm allowing users to click on an and then by doing so add another one for more of the same type of items. But i can't think of a way to count all of these simply with jquery/javascript. I was going to then name the item as something like name="whatever(total+1)", if anyone has a simple way to do this i'd be extremely grateful as javascript isn't exactly my native tongue and stack overflow usually has a ton of great answers and a great community so i'm hoping my query will not go unheard.

• Should GSON ignore varying types if they're not used in a class?

  I'm making an API call that returns JSON which has a particular field which either returns false or a map depending on content. It's a field that I don't care about. I expected GSON to ignore this particular field, though it doesn't seem to be. The object generation fails with the following message: com.google.gson.JsonSyntaxException: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Expected a string but was BEGIN_OBJECT at line 1 column 403560 I've seen this particular question (Gson deserialize json with varying value types). I want to make sure I need to make a custom deserializer before doing so. I'm wondering if I may have another issue. edit: Example: "anonymous_flag": { } vs "anonymous_flag": "yes" Another Edit: I actually had the field in my model object... I was referencing the wrong class. Judge away :)

• My list item's child label elements disappear in IE on accordion menu opening

  I've got an app that's working pretty flawlessly in Chrome and FF, however, when I view it in IE, all is well until I click on a header element to activate it (jQuery accordion). What happens then is that I see a brief flash where the content is there, then suddenly the entire left column disappears. This column is generated by a floated label element with a class of ".left" as seen below... <ul class="menu collapsible"> <li class='expand sectionTitle'><a href='#'>General Settings</a> <ul class='acitem'> <li class="section"> <label class="left">This item if floated left with a defined width of 190px via css. This is the item that's disappearing after a brief display</label> <input class="input" value="input element here" /> <label class="description">This element has a margin-left:212px; set via css in order to be positioned to the right of the label element as if in an adjacent table cell. When I add a max-width property to this element, it disappears in IE too!</label> </li> </ul> </li> </ul> As you can see from the comments in the code above (for the two label elements) the description label disappears once I set a max-width on it (I don't have a max-width on the left label element, but it disappears nonetheless). The initial view of this UL menu is fine (note the expand class declaration which makes this part of the accordion open at startup. Its not until I click the "General Settings" to toggle it closed, then back open, that the left class elements disappear (and only in IE)

• What is the best resource or method for learning more about servers and networking?

  I can get around a server to some degree, but everything I have learned has been as I have needed to learn it. Every once in a while I will learn about some new command that will revolutionize how I think about systems and networking, and realize how I could have been using it this whole time if only I had known about it. Anything to bring someone from novice to some kind of fluency? Do I just need to earn the battle scars bit by bit over the course of years? (I mean of course I do but what can I do to help it be not quite so painful?) For instance, I am still fuzzy on all of networking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Is there a convenient method to pull files from a server in an SSH session?

  I often SSH into a cluster node for work and after processing want to pull several results back to my local machine for analysis. Typically, to do this I use a local shell to scp from the server, but this requires a lot of path manipulation. I'd prefer to use a syntax like interactive FTP and just 'pull' files from the server to my local pwd. Another possible solution might be to have some way to automatically set up my client computer as an ssh alias so that something like scp results home:~/results would work as expected. Is there any obscure SSH trick that'll do this for me? Working from grawity's answer, a complete solution in config files is something like local .ssh/config: Host ex HostName ssh.example.com RemoteForward 10101 localhost:22 ssh.example.com .ssh/config: Host home HostName localhost Port 10101 which lets me do commands exactly like scp results home: transferring the file results to my home machine.
