Alternative method of viewing a database diagram in SQL Server to see what tables have gone missing?

I have a database diagram for my database, but when I open it in SQL Server, I almost immediately get a message saying some permissions changed or tables in the diagram were dropped or renamed, and tables in the diagram vanish before I can even scroll over to see what or where they were. Basically, it's saying, "Hey, you know all that time you spent laying out tables in this diagram... half of them are going to vanish when you view it, and I'm not going to tell you which tables vanished or where they were in the diagram. You're just going to see a bunch of random empty spaces where tables used to be ;)" Ridiculous. So I thought that maybe if I look in the dbo.sysdiagrams table, I could look at some plain text definition of the diagram to get a clue about the names of the tables that went missing (because thier names were probably only changed slightly) or their coordinates in the diagram (because their spatial location would give me a clue as to what they were), so that I could re-add them, but I can't, because it's a binary definition. So, is there some other program I could use to view the existing database diagram that's not going to just drop and forget the missing tables without telling me what they were, or is this information lost and at the mercy of some SSMS-proprietary database diagram format and viewer which refuses to cooperate with me.

Want to add a new property to a class, can I use anonymous functions for this?

I have 2 Lists: List<User> List<UserStats> So I want to add a property Count to User (it doesn't have one now, and I can't change the implementation at this point). For a web service call, that returns json, I want to modify the User object. Basically I add the Users to a collection. So I want to add a modified user class (via anonymous functions?) to the collection before I serialize it to json. So something like: loop users { user.Count = userstats[user.ID].Count; list.Add(user); } is this possible? how?

What is the best method of assessment for computer science students?

This question is a bit more philosophical so feel free to remove if you like but it's been bugging me for the last 4 years! As a final year student I find that exams can be often be passed with a couple of days of cramming, without necessarily retaining or understanding the content i.e. a regurgitation of lecture notes is often enough to gain high marks. A friend of mine is about to graduate with an honours degree whose final year evaluation was based solely on practical work (a project, assignment marks and the creation of a poster) yet all of this work could have been completed by a third party. Personally I don't think either of these methods of assessment is sufficient as I am currently on track for a 1st class honours in artificial intelligence and computer science and believe this is mostly due to my skill in passing exams not my skill as a programmer or my vast in depth knowledge of any of the subjects I have "studied". Surely there is a better way to assess our skills - isn't there?

Hello! At the moment, I am creating some kind of admin panel/backend for my site. I want to do the following: Only admins (a user has a user_role(integer) -- 1 = admin, 2 = moderator, 3 = user) can see and access a link for the admin panel. So I created an admin_controller. In my admin controller I created a new function called is_admin?: class AdminController < ApplicationController def admin_panel end def is_admin? current_user.user_role == 1 end end my route looks like. map.admin_panel '/admin-panel', :controller => 'admin', :action => 'admin_panel' and in my _sidebar.html.erb (partial in applicaton.html.erb) I created the link: <%= link_to "Admin Panel", :admin_panel unless is_admin? %> Now I get an error called: undefined method `is_admin?' Where is the problem? Please help me solving this problem!

Using new to allocate an array of class elements with an overloaded constructor in C++.

As an example say I have a class foo that does not have a default constructor but one that looks like this foo:foo(int _varA,int _varB) { m_VarA = _varA; m_VarB = _varB; } How would I allocate an array of these. I seem to remember trying somthing like this unsuccessfully. foo* MyArray = new foo[100](25,14). I don't think this will work either. foo* MyArray = new foo[100](25,14) Can this be done? I typically do this by writing the default constructor using some preset values for _varA and _varB. Then adding a function to reset _varA and _varB for each element but that will not work for this case. Thanks for the help.

What is the best way to reference datastore model attributes without using the four 'if statements' I have in the below sample code, which seem messy and inefficient. Say i create one object and add it to my ArrayList. If I then create another object with exactly the same constructor input, will the contain() method evaluate the two objects to be the same? Assume the constructor doesn't do anything funny with the input, and the variables stored in both objects are identical. I am writing matrix classes. Take a look at this definition: template <typename T, unsigned int dimension_x, unsigned int dimension_y> class generic_matrix { ... generic_matrix<T, dimension_x - 1, dimension_y - 1> minor(unsigned int x, unsigned int y) const { ... } ... } template <typename T, unsigned int dimension> class generic_square_matrix : public generic_matrix<T, dimension, dimension> { ... generic_square_matrix(const generic_matrix<T, dimension, dimension>& other) { ... } ... void foo(); } The generic_square_matrix class provides additional functions like matrix multiplication. Doing this is no problem: generic_square_matrix<T, 4> m = generic_matrix<T, 4, 4>(); It is possible to assign any square matrix to M, even though the type is not generic_square_matrix, due to the constructor. This is possible because the data does not change across children, only the supported functions. This is also possible: generic_square_matrix<T, 4> m = generic_square_matrix<T, 5>().minor(1,1); Same conversion applies here. But now comes the problem: generic_square_matrix<T, 4>().minor(1,1).foo(); //problem, foo is not in generic_matrix<T, 3, 3> To solve this I would like generic_square_matrix::minor to return a generic_square_matrix instead of a generic_matrix. The only possible way to do this, I think is to use template specialisation. But since a specialisation is basically treated like a separate class, I have to redefine all functions. I cannot call the function of the non-specialised class as you would do with a derived class, so I have to copy the entire function. This is not a very nice generic-programming solution, and a lot of work. C++ almost has a solution for my problem: a virtual function of a derived class, can return a pointer or reference to a different class than the base class returns, if this class is derived from the class that the base class returns. generic_square_matrix is derived from generic_matrix, but the function does not return a pointer nor reference, so this doesn't apply here. Is there a solution to this problem (possibly involving an entirely other structure; my only requirements are that the dimensions are a template parameter and that square matrices can have additional functionality). Like transfer logs they support piped logging though so you can still use rotatelogs for them. " So my question is: what would be the best way to handle multiple logs? If I just do a very classical log and I use the system's "logrotate" program couldn't this be a good deal? How would/do you deal with that? Thank you!

P.S: I'm using DDD to learn I have an ACtion in a Controller and it'll save an entity (from my model) by a repository (for a database). My doubts is, How can I get the informations from the View and save it by a repository in my Controller ? Is it correct to get an entity of my Model in Save method of controller, like this: public ActionResult Save(Product product) { // validate object // save data in repository return View("Success"); } Or Need I get an DTO (with a structure similar to my entity) and create an object passing property by property to an entity ? static constants return instance of specific class in Flex?

So here's what I mean. Let's say I have a class ErrorMessages which holds all my error messages as static constants. So I could access them like ErrorMessages.PASSWORD_INVALID or ErrorMessage.PASSWORD_TOO_SHORT. I want to know if it is possible to have separate classes that hold subset of these constants and access them like ErrorMessages.PASSWORD.INVALID or ErrorMessages.PASSWORD.TOO_SHORT, etc. This way I can more structured static structure and makes it much easier to use autocomplete. I tried few different ways and couldn't figure out if this was possible..

Optional parens in Ruby for method with uppercase start letter?

I just started out using IronRuby (but the behaviour seems consistent when I tested it in plain Ruby) for a DSL in my .NET application - and as part of this I'm defining methods to be called from the DSL via define_method. However, I've run into an issue regarding optional parens when calling methods starting with an uppercase letter. Given the following program: class DemoClass define_method :test do puts "output from test" end define_method :Test do puts "output from Test" end def run puts "Calling 'test'" test() puts "Calling 'test'" test puts "Calling 'Test()'" Test() puts "Calling 'Test'" Test end end demo = DemoClass.new demo.run Running this code in a console (using plain ruby) yields the following output: ruby .\test.rb Calling 'test' output from test Calling 'test' output from test Calling 'Test()' output from Test Calling 'Test' ./test.rb:13:in `run': uninitialized constant DemoClass::Test (NameError) from ./test.rb:19:in `<main>' I realize that the Ruby convention is that constants start with an uppercase letter and that the general naming convention for methods in Ruby is lowercase. But the parens are really killing my DSL syntax at the moment. Is there any way around this issue?

Is it bad practice to assign a css class for the sole purpose of finding it with jQuery?

I'm using ASP.NET, not the newest one with that clientIdMode stuff. So, the control ids are generated and funky. There are lots of ways of passing ids around, but lately I've been assigning a 'fake' css class to the control I'm interested in. Then in a js file I use jQuery to find the control. Is this bad practice? It seems a lot like the ajaxControlToolkit's behaviorId to me... Is the behaviorId bad practice as well?

Can I have two names for the same variable?

The short version of the question: I do: x = y. Then I change x, and y is unchanged. What I want is to "bind" x and y in such a way that I change y whenever I change x. The extended version (with some details): I wrote a class ("first" class) which generates objects of another class ("second" class). In more details, every object of the second class has a name as a unique identifier. I call a static method of the first class with a name of the object from the second class. The first class checks if such an object was already generated (if it is present in the static HashMap of the first class). If it is already there, it is returned. If it is not yet there, it is created, added to the HashMap and returned. And then I have the following problem. At some stage of my program, I take an object with a specific name from the HashMap of the first class. I do something with this object (for example change values of some fields). But the object in the HashMap does not see these changes! So, in fact, I do not "take" an object from the HashMap, I "create a copy" of this object and this is what I would like to avoid.

I want to create a simple game like tic tac toe where the human user is playing against the computer. The computer function takes a couple of milliseconds to run but I would like to make the computer take 5 seconds to make a move. Which method should I use? 1) Create two memory threads. One for the computer and one for the human user. When the computer is taking 5 seconds to imitate thinking, the human user thread is paused for 5 seconds. 2) Disable input devices for 5 seconds using timer or dispatchertimer 3) Any better methods you can think of Thanks!

Is there a fast concat method for linked list in Java?

How can I concat two linked lists in O(1) with Java via jdk, google or apache commons collection or whatever? E.g. in jdk there is only the addAll method which is O(n). Another feature I miss is to concat two lists where each of them could be in inverse order. To illustrate this assume two lists a-b-c and e-f-g could merged into a-b-c-e-f-g a-b-c-g-f-e c-b-a-e-f-g c-b-a-g-f-e Do you know of such a list implemenation or do I have to implement my own linked list? It would be also helpful to know how to tweak existing solutions (e.g. the jdk LinkedList has a lot of private methods only). These features seems to me very obvious, hopefully I am not missing something stupid.

Java generates a proxy class for a given interface and provides the instance of the proxy class. But when we type cast the proxy object to our specific Object, how java handles this internally? Is this treated as special scenario? For example I have class 'OriginalClass' and it implements 'OriginalInterface', when I create proxy object by passing 'OriginalInterface' interface java created proxy class 'ProxyClass' using methods in the provided interface and provides object of this class(i.e ProxyClass). If my understanding is correct then can you please answer following queries 1) When I type cast object of ProxyClass to my class OriginalClass this works, but how java is allowing this? Same in case of instace of? 2) As my knowledge java creates a proxy class only with the methods, but what happen when I try to access attributes on this object? 3) Only interface methods are getting implemented in Proxy, but what happens when I try to access a method which not in interface and only mentioned in the class?
