  I have a Winform application with 2 DateTimePicker's on it, initialized as follows: private void InitializeComponent() { ... this._StartDate.Format = System.Windows.Forms.DateTimePickerFormat.Short; .... this._StartTime.CustomFormat = System.Globalization.DateTimeFormatInfo.CurrentInfo.ShortTimePattern; this._StartTime.Format = System.Windows.Forms.DateTimePickerFormat.Custom; ... } My question is: When I pick a new region from "Regional and Language Options" in the Control Panel, the _StartDate display is updated to reflect the new regional settings, but the _StartTime is not. Why?

• Parantheses around method invokation: why is the compiler complaining about assignment?

  I know why the following code doesn't compile: public class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { main((null)); // this is fine! (main(null)); // this is NOT! } } What I'm wondering is why my compiler (javac 1.6.0_17, Windows version) is complaining "The left hand side of an assignment must be a variable". I'd expect something like "Don't put parantheses around a method invokation, dummy!", instead. So why is the compiler making a totally unhelpful complaint about something that is blatantly irrelevant? Is this the result of an ambiguity in the grammar? A bug in the compiler? If it's the former, could you design a language such that a compiler would never be so off-base about a syntax error like this?

• Is there a shorthand version of HTML available?

  I remember reading an article about a shorthand version, or extension, of HTML a few months ago. Its purpose was to make HTML code significantly more concise, by removing end tags, and it may have allowed loops of some sort as well. I want to use it now, but I can't seem to remember what it was called. Searching online, I found HAML, but HAML syntax doesn't look like the example that I remember from the article. The syntax from the article made use of right angle brackets, which were a sort of replacement for indentation. Can anyone identify this language?

  I was recently on an interview for a position where C/C++ is the primary language and during one question I was told that it's possible to use the vtable to determine which class in a hierarchy a base pointer actually stores. So if, for example you have class A { public: A() {} virtual ~A() {} virtual void method1() {} }; class B : public A { public: B() {} virtual ~B() {} virtual void method1() {} }; and you instantiate A * pFoo = new B(), is it indeed possible to use the vtable to determine whether pFoo contains a pointer to an instance of A or B?

  I want to make a back button for a navigation controller with the title "Back" instead of the title of the previous controller. I'm using this code: UIBarButtonItem *backButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithTitle:NSLocalizedString(@"Back", @"Back") style:UIBarButtonItemStyleBordered target:nil action:nil]; self.navigationItem.backBarButtonItem = backButton; I'd like to be able to skip localizing the "Back" string in my app (since I can only localize it in a limited number of languages). If I give my navigation controller no title, the back button will be automatically localized into whatever the language the user has chosen, so the system has translations of "Back" in many languages. Is there a way to access the localizations that are already present in the system and use them myself? These are things like "Back", "Cancel", "Done" and so on, which show up when creating one of the standard system buttons.

• Delphi 7 - Why does Windows 7 change encoding of characters in runtime?

  I have a delphi 7 form: and my code: when I run this form in Windows 7, I see: In design time, form had polish letters in first label, but it doesn't have them in runtime. It looks ok on Vista or Windows XP. When I set caption of second label in code, everything works fine and characters are properly encoded. First 5 codes of top label on Windows 7: 65 97 69 101 83 First 5 codes of top label on Windows Vista/XP: 165 185 202 234 140 First 5 codes of bottom label on every system: 165 185 202 234 140 Windows 7 changes encoding, why? My system settings seem to be ok. I have proper language set for non-unicode applications in control panel.

• Compilation hangs for a class with field double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308

  I have come across an interesting situation. A coworker committed some changes, which would not compile on my machine neither from the IDE (Eclipse) nor from a command line (Maven). The problem manifested in the compilation process taking 100% CPU and only killing the process would help to stop it. After some analysis the cause of the problem was located and resolved. It turned out be a line "double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308" (without semicolon at the end) in one of the interfaces. The following snipped duplicates it. public class WeirdCompilationIssue { double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308 } Why would compiler hang? A language edge case?

• Why do Lua arrays(tables) start at 1 instead of 0?

  Hi, I don't understand the rational behind the decision of this part of Lua. Why does indexing start at 1? I have read(as many others did) this great paper. It seems to me a strange corner of a language that is very pleasant to learn and program. Don't get me wrong, Lua is just great but there has to be an explanation somewhere. Most of what I found(on the web) is just saying the index starts at 1. Full stop. It would be very interesting to read what its designers said about the subject. Note that I am "very" beginner in Lua, I hope I am not missing something obvious about tables.

Reading Coders at work I saw that lot of the interviewees suggest to dive into a project source code to learn best practices to be aware of bad habits and of course to take new inspirations for how to do things. I decided to pick a project as more self contained as I could find. My choice was Sinatra since It's 1000 LOC. Is It a good project to learn? Do you suggest another one more simple (i.e. less LOCs)?   Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. • Has anybody managed to teach themself strong OOP skills through mainly developing with JavaScript?

  I am trying to do this, I'm a full time front-end dev and am aware that I am struglling to achieve this. When I am referring to OOP skills I am referring to understanding and being familiar with concepts like inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, abstaction. I am aware that it may be more likely to achieve what I'm after by focusing on another language in my spare time. This is the plan, but I'd be really intrigued to hear if anybody has managed to achieve this purely through JavaScript and how you did it. It'd be even better to hear from strong OOP developers from who use different programming languages to know if they have worked with developers who have managed to achieve this.

  Hi, I'm working as a QA (Software Tester with 3 years of experience) and was thinking of getting some certifications for my career. I already have the ISTQB certification and was thinking of doing SCJP along with MCTS 70-433 certification (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) as the next move. So my question is this: 1) Who should go for the 70-433 certification and is it worth going for, for a career in QA? 2) What would be a good book to study for this? I'm just looking for a simple book that is written just to the point and not much bloated up such as technical bibles. Not that they aren't good but they just take up too much of time. Maybe something similar to the one written by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates for SCJP. It is written in a very simple language and is enough to do SCJP. Edit: I'm still searching for answers to this. • Developing a sector based partition copying program?

  Hi, I want to develop a program that copies a partition's 'data' only, to another partition. And I want to do it such that the program starts from the first sector of source partition and checks if a sector is used. If it is used copy it to the destination parition. Else don't copy. In other words it's like copying only the contents of a partition to another, sector-by-sector. Question: Is there a way to check if a particular sector on harddisk is used or not? The programming language I am using is C++ and the underlying filesystem in NTFS. Thanks a lot.

• What is Perl's secret of getting small code do so much?

  I've seen many (code-golf) Perl programs out there and even if I can't read them (Don't know Perl) I wonder how you can manage to get such a small bit of code to do what would take 20 lines in some other programming language. What is the secret of Perl? Is there a special syntax that allows you to do complex tasks in few keystrokes? Is it the mix of regular expressions? I'd like to learn how to write powerful and yet short programs like the ones you know from the code-golf challenges here. What would be the best place to start out? I don't want to learn "clean" Perl - I want to write scripts even I don't understand anymore after a week. If there are other programming languages out there with which I can write even shorter code, please tell me.

• A general question about compilation and interpretation.

  Hi stackoverflow, I apologize in advance for the possible stupidity of this question. However, the following has been the source of some confusion for me and I know the people here will be able to handily clear up the confusion for me. Basically, I would like to finally understand the relationship between any and all of the following terms. Some of the terms I do actually understand pretty well, but some of them are similar in my mind and I would like to once and for all to see their relationships/distinctions laid out all at once. They are: compiler interpreter bytecode machine code assembler assembly language binary object code executable Ideally, an answer would use examples from Java and C++ and other well-known programming languages that a young-ish student like me would be familiar with. Also, if you want to throw in any other useful terms that would be fine too :)

• How to escape/strip special characters in the LaTeX document?

  We implemented the online service where it is possible to generate PDF with predefined structure. User can choose a LaTeX template and then compile it with an appropriate inputs. The question we worry about is the security, that the malicious user was not able to gain shell access through the injection of special instruction into latex document. We need some workaround for this or at least a list of special characters that we should strip from the input data. Preferred language would be PHP, but any suggestions, constructions and links are very welcomed. PS. in few word we're looking form mysql_real_escape_string for LaTeX

• Using 'Copy as cURL' from Chrome in windows command line

  So, Google Chrome as this great 'copy as cURL' option under 'Network' of the Chrome DevTools. Works great in command lines for linux but not in windows. Apparently it has something to do with the single quotes as the error I get is protocol 'http not supported In other words its reading that single quote. Is there a simple way to make this formatable for windows? I tried replacing all the single quotes with double quotes but then nothing happens at all.   Am I the only one bugged by the phrase "unmanaged c++"? I think the phrase is implicitly insulting, and is designed to be so. Stroustrup never wrote "The Design and Evolution of Unmanaged C++" and the not unmanaged C++ standards committee is not working on "UC++1x". Maybe I should disingeneously invent a suite of languages called "Faster" purely so I can refer to any language I want to implicitly denigrate with a "Slow" prefix. "Oh, youre using Slow CSharp? Shame!"

• FastCGI C++ program and missing SCRIPT_NAME

  Hi guys, i'm studying the fastcgi developement kit because i'm writing a new scripting language and i'd like to write a fastcgi version of the interpreter to run scripts as webpages. I'm using this example from the sdk, located at /srv/http/bin/echocpp So, in my httpd.conf file, i have the following lines : FastCgiServer /srv/http/bin/echocpp -idle-timeout 120 -processes 4 ScriptAlias / /srv/http/bin/echocpp/ ... ... AddHandler fastcgi-script hy Where 'hy' is the extensions of my scripts. Then, when i try browse, for instance http://localhost/~evilsocket/prime.hy I see all the environment variables as expected from the echo-cpp.cpp programm, except for the SCRIPT_NAME that is empty. Is there something i'm missing out of this? How am i supposed to obtain the full path of the script to run it inside my fastcgi version of the interpreter? Thanks

• HtmlUnit doesn't load externally referenced javascript

  I have run into a problem while trying to test a web application with HtmlUnit. Please bear in mind that I haven't used HtmlUnit very long so I might be missing something trivial. For some reason externally referenced javascripts aren't being loaded. When I print the page as xml all i get is this: <script language="javascript" src="urltofile.js"> </script> As you can see the script tag is empty when it should contain the javascript. What am I missing? I have googled for a solution all morning but haven't found any relevant information. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
