  I've found boolean mode of MySQL full text search useful, however there are a couple of things I can't seem to figure out how to achieve. For instance imagine I have a full text column containing the words "Steve's Javascript Tutorial - Part One". I would like to match this for each of the following searches: "tutorials", "javascript tutorials", "java", "java script", "script" Imagine that each of those searches is simply assigned to a variable in whatever language may be being used (I always use PHP). How could I modify this to make sure that Steve's article is returned on each of those searches? MATCH (article_title) AGAINST ('"+$variable+"*' IN BOOLEAN MODE)

• Working with Form Array's in Coldfusion?

  I have no idea how to handle this in coldfusion 9, I have a form being submitted (POST) with element checkboxes, called items[]. When I do a <cfdump var="#form#" /> no-problem, I get all the items shown with the proper names like items[] eg: struct ITEMS[] 13,14 FIELDNAMES ITEMS[] however doing a <cfdump var="#form.items[]#" /> results in an error. How do I access the CF9 field values? Somehow loop through it? I cannot seem to do anything with the array to get the id's out of it? Thoughts, I'm kindof stumped and coldfusion isn't the easiest language to find examples / references on the net ;) Is there a correct way to deal with this? I need to get the ID's out of there so I can referenc what lines were checked in the form, so I can follow up with an action. Thanks!

  I've been quoting this segment from Sun's document for the past few days, and only now do I stop and think about what it's saying, and I can't make sense out of it. Please keep in mind that English is not my first language. Naming conventions Variables: Except for variables, all instance, class, and class constants are in mixed case with a lowercase first letter. How is this making sense? Isn't this saying that class names are in mixed case with a lowercase first letter? Like I should name it class myClass? And class constants are also in mixed case with a lowercase first letter? Like I should name it Integer.maxValue? And is it really saying anything about how variables themselves should be named? Am I not parsing this properly or is this actually a blatant error?

• Parallelizing a serial algorithm

  Hej folks, I am working on porting a Text mining/Natural language application from single-core to a Map-Reduce style system. One of the steps involves a while loop similar to this: Queue<Element>; while (!queue.empty()) { Element e = queue.next(); Set<Element> result = calculateResultSet(e); if (!result.empty()) { queue.addAll(result); } } Each iteration depends on the result of the one before (kind of). There is no way of determining the number of iterations this loop will have to perform. Is there a way of parallelizing a serial algorithm such as this one? I am trying to think of a feedback mechanism, that is able to provide its own input, but how would one go about parallelizing it? Thanks for any help/remarks

  Hi Folks! I have been working on a web app and for part of it I need to open a new window. I have this working on all browsers, my sticking point is with Google Chrome. Chrome seems to ignore the window features which is causing me issues, the thing I'm struggling with is I need the address bar to be editable within the new window. FF, IE, Safari and Opera do this fine, Chrome does not.   I've been on and off intrested in making a text based browser game. I have been turned off by the idea because of the daunting amount of things to learn. PHP (or another sever side scripting language) Javascript HTML MySql And the fact of severs and apache.. Can I just pay for web hosting and by-pass having to set-up apache? Also how long will it take me to learn all thoose things well enough to start work on my game? Should I just stick with Flash and then C# for XNA?

• SVN merge adding parameters. WTF? Or how to do big merges?

  I am doing an SVN merge for a branch, and in one of the files I see this: GetQueryReferenceData(int sessionId, Int32 sessionId) Which means that the merge tool just added another parameter without asking any questions. Imagine if it was a call to Substring(0) and in another branch it would be Substring(0,2). That is completely different behavior, how does it even get to decide which one to choose? Good thing it came up during compile time. The problem is that it will not be marked as a conflict and will be merged automatically. That is very dangerous behavior and if you don't have the luxury of having a unit test for every line of code - you are screwed. What am I doing wrong and how to do big merges without the merging tool putting in dangerous changes silently? Is there a merge tool that is not language agnostic? I am using Tortoise SVN.

• Accessing a webpage in C++

  Is there a good, simple library which allows C++ to load a webpage? I just want to grab the source as text. I'm not using any IDE or significant library, just straight command line. Tangentially, is there something fundamental I'm missing about programming in C++? I would think any language in common use today would have droves of web-based functionality, being so central to computer usage, but I can find next to no discussion on how to accomplish it. I realise C++ significantly predates the modern internet, so it lacking any core ability in the regard is reasonable, but the fact that relevant libraries seem so sparse is baffling. • Creating an Application to Save Arbitrary Application State

  See this SuperUser question. To summarize, VM software lets you save state of arbitrary applications (by saving the whole VM image). Would it be possible to write some software for Windows that allows you to save and reload arbitrary application state? If so (and presumably so), what would it entail? I would be looking to implement this, if possible, in a high-level language like C#. I presume if I used something else, I would need to dump memory registers (or maybe dump the entire application memory block) to a file somewhere and load it back somewhere to refresh state. So how do I build this thing?

  I made a small backup application that simply creates an archive out specified files and folders. Now I need an online service to backup that online. Which service can i use that can be integrated into my app ? Options I considered: dropbox is ideal, but they have all but abandoned the desktop. skydrive has no api. I couldn't find any free reliable backup service that uses ftp . anything else ? it should provide 1-2 gb of free space and be reasonably reliable.   Lets say we have 3 tables (actually I have 2 at the moment, but this example might illustrate the thought better): [Person] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [Group] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [Role] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [PersonGroupRole] Person_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Group_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Role_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Should any of the 3 ID's in the relation PersonGroupRole be marked as PRIMARY key or should they all 3 be combined into one composite?? whats the real benefit of doing it or not? I can join anyways as far as I know, so Person JOIN PersonGroupRole JOIN Group gives me which persons are in which Groups etc. I will be using LINQ/C#/.NET on top of SQL-express and SQL-server, so if there is any reasons regarding language/SQL that might make the choice more clear, thats the platform I ask about. Looking forward to see what answers pops up, as I have thought of these primary keys/indexes many times when making combined ones.

  Hi all, When I was doing some JQuery and PHP, I noticed the If-else patterns were treated differently and varied from one language to another. Say I got a simple input text field in a HTML and I was using some Ifs and Elses to check the value input into the text field. Text: <input type="text" name="testing"/> In JQuery, I got some codes as follows: if($("#testing").val()==1){ //do something } if($("#testing").val()=="add"){ //do something } else{ //do something } if($("#testing").val()=="hello"){ //do something } How come JQuery and PHP treated the Else statement differently? I mean in JQuery, the third If statement was still proceeded even if it had gone to the Else statement, but it stopped after the Else statement when I repeated the code in PHP script.

• Postfix and right-associative operators in LR(0) parsers

  Is it possible to construct an LR(0) parser that could parse a language with both prefix and postfix operators? For example, if I had a grammar with the + (addition) and ! (factorial) operators with the usual precedence then 1+3! should be 1 + 3! = 1 + 6 = 7, but surely if the parser were LR(0) then when it had 1+3 on the stack it would reduce rather than shift? Also, do right associative operators pose a problem? For example, 2^3^4 should be 2^(3^4) but again, when the parser have 2^3 on the stack how would it know to reduce or shift? If this isn't possible is there still a way to use an LR(0) parser, possibly by converting the input into Polish or Reverse Polish notation or adding brackets in the appropriate places? Would this be done before, during or after the lexing stage?

• Porting library from Java to Python

  I'm about to port a smallish library from Java to Python and wanted some advice (smallish ~ a few thousand lines of code). I've studied the Java code a little, and noticed some design patterns that are common in both languages. However, there were definitely some Java-only idioms (singletons, etc) present that are generally not-well-received in Python-world. I know at least one tool (j2py) exists that will turn a .java file into a .py file by walking the AST. Some initial experimentation yielded less than favorable results. Should I even be considering using an automated tool to generate some code, or are the languages different enough that any tool would create enough re-work to have justified writing from scratch? If tools aren't the devil, are there any besides j2py that can at least handle same-project import management? I don't expect any tool to match 3rd party libraries from one language to a substitute in another.
