  • Are there any real life uses for the Java byte primitive type?

    - by Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
For some inexplicable reason the byte primitive type is signed in Java. This mean that valid values are -128..127 instead of the usual 0..255 range representing 8 significant bits in a byte (without a sign bit). This mean that all byte manipulation code usually does integer calculations and end up masking out the last 8 bits. I was wondering if there is any real life scenario where the Java byte primitive type fits perfectly or if it is simply a completely useless design decision? EDIT: The sole actual use case was a single-byte placeholder for native code. In other words, not to be manipulated as a byte inside Java code.

  • Java EE 6 Pocket Guide from O'Reilly - Now Available in Paperback and Kindle Edition

    - by arungupta
Hot off the press ... Java EE 6 Pocket Guide from 'OReilly Media is now available in Paperback and Kindle Edition. Here are the book details: Release Date: Sep 21, 2012 Language: English Pages: 208 Print ISBN: 978-1-4493-3668-4 | ISBN 10:1-4493-3668-X Ebook ISBN:978-1-4493-3667-7 | ISBN 10:1-4493-3667-1 The book provides a comprehensive summary of the Java EE 6 platform. Main features of different technologies from the platform are explained and accompanied by tons of samples. A chapter is dedicated to Managed Beans, Servlets, Java Persistence API, Enterprise JavaBeans, Contexts and Dependency Injection, JavaServer Faces, SOAP-Based Web Services, RESTful Web Services, Java Message Service, and Bean Validation in that format. Many thanks to Markus Eisele, John Yeary, and Bert Ertman for reviewing and providing valuable comments. This book was not possible without their extensive feedback! This book was mostly written by compiling my blogs, material from 2-day workshops, and several hands-on workshops around the world. The interactions with users of different technologies and whiteboard discussions with different specification leads helped me understand the technology better. Many thanks to them for helping me be a better user! The long international flights during my travel around the world proved extremely useful for authoring the content. No phone, no email, no IM, food served on the table, power outlet = a perfect recipe for authoring ;-) Markus wrote a detailed review of the book. He was one of the manuscript reviewers of the book as well and provided valuable guidance. Some excerpts from his blog: It covers the basics you need to know of Java EE 6 and gives good examples of all relevant parts. ... This is a pocket guide which is comprehensively written. I could follow all examples and it was a good read overall. No complicated constructs and clear writing. ... GO GET IT! It is the only book you probably will need about Java EE 6! It is comprehensive, wonderfully written and covers everything you need in your daily work. It is not a complete reference but provides a great shortcut to the things you need to know. To me it is a good beginners guide and also works as a companion for advanced users. Here is the first tweet feedback ... Jeff West was super prompt to place the first pre-order of my book, pretty much the hour it was announced. Thank you Jeff! @mike_neck posted the very first tweet about the book, thanks for that! The book is now available in Paperback and Kindle Edition from the following websites: O'Reilly Media (Ebook, Print & Ebook, Print) Amazon.com (Kindle Edition and Paperback) Barnes and Noble Overstock (1% off Amazon) Buy.com Booktopia.com Tower Books Angus & Robertson Shopping.com Here is how I can use your help: Help spread the word about the book If you bought a Paperback or downloaded Kindle Edition, then post your review here. If you have not bought, then you can buy it at amazon.com and multiple other websites mentioned above. If you are coming to JavaOne, you'll have an opportunity to get a free copy at O'Reilly's booth on Monday (October 1) from 2-3pm. And you can always buy it from the JavaOne Bookstore. I hope you enjoy reading it and learn something new from it or hone your existing skills. As always, looking forward to your feedback!

  • Django Form for date range

  • What is the correct date format for a Date column in YUI DataTable ?

    - by giulio
I have produced a data table. All the columns are sortable. It has a date in one column which I formatted dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss . This is different from the default format as defined in the doco, but I should be able to define my own format for non-american formats. (See below) The DataTable class provides a set of built-in static functions to format certain well-known types of data. In your Column definition, if you set a Column's formatter to YAHOO.widget.DataTable.formatDate, that function will render data of type Date with the default syntax of "MM/DD/YYYY". If you would like to bypass a built-in formatter in favor of your own, you can point a Column's formatter to a custom function that you define. The table is generated from HTML Markup, so the data is held within "" tags. This gives me some more clues about compatible string dates for javascript: In general, the RecordSet expects to hold data in native JavaScript types. For instance, a date is expected to be a JavaScript Date instance, not a string like "4/26/2005" in order to sort properly. Converting data types as data comes into your RecordSet is enabled through the parser property in the fields array of your DataSource's responseSchema I suspect that the I'm missing something in the date format. So what is an acceptable string date for javascript, that Yui dataTable will recognise, given that I want format it as "dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss" ?

  • Use date operations on a computed field filter in a view

    - by stephenhay
I'd like to expose a filter in Views based on a Computed Field. This field should utilize the date operation "less than". Apparently, a date type is not available to computed field (varchar is). However, using varchar results in views treating the field as a string rather than as a date, without the operation I'm looking for. So I tried using a timestamp instead of a date, which allowed me to use an integer data type. The exposed view gives me a "less than" operation, but as it's still not a date, the user must type in a timestamp. Not handy. So I'm thinking the best way to do this is to create a new (hidden) CCK field which is a date field, and set the value of this field to the value of the Computed Field. I can then use the new CCK field for my exposed filter. But I'm not getting anywhere with this, as I'm unsure how to set another CCK field with a Computed Field. To return the value to the computed field itself, I'm using the standard: $node_field[0]['value'] = $newestdate; I would like to set the value of the new CCK field to $newestdate as well. Can anyone help?

  • Adding date to multiple fields via datepicker

    - by Andy
i have a form in drupal with jquery based date module. there are multiple fields with date picker enabled. i want to set the value of all of them (they all have class .date-popup-init) to the value of the first field (#edit-field, the 'from' date) when that field is set. my code so far: <script type="text/javascript"> var DatePicked = function() { var firstdate = $("#edit-field"); var updater = firstdate.datepicker("getDate"); $(".date-popup-init").each(function(){ $(this).datepicker("setDate", updater); }); } $(function() { $("#edit-field").datepicker({ onSelect: DatePicked }); }); </script> this seems to randomly work; it sets the date of some fields to the value of #edit-field, seemingly different fields each time. also, the form adds more datepicker-enabled fields via ajax. is there any way to ensure that all these new fields, when they load, pick up the value of #edit-field as well? disclaimer: last night was my first attempt at javascript of any kind. i have a basic idea now. the above was cobbled through countless google examples.

  • trying to override getView in a SimpleCursorAdapter gives NullPointerException

    - by Dimitry Hristov
    Would very much appreciate any help or hint on were to go next. I'm trying to change the content of a row in ListView programmatically. In one row there are 3 TextView and a ProgressBar. I want to animate the ProgressBar if the 'result' column of the current row is zero. After reading some tutorials and docs, I came to the conclusion that LayoutInflater has to be used and getView() - overriden. Maybe I am wrong on this. If I return row = inflater.inflate(R.layout.row, null); from the function, it gives NullPointerException. Here is the code: private final class mySimpleCursorAdapter extends SimpleCursorAdapter { private Cursor localCursor; private Context localContext; public mySimpleCursorAdapter(Context context, int layout, Cursor c, String[] from, int[] to) { super(context, layout, c, from, to); this.localCursor = c; this.localContext = context; } /** * 1. ListView asks adapter "give me a view" (getView) for each item of the list * 2. A new View is returned and displayed */ public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View row = super.getView(position, convertView, parent); LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater)localContext.getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); String result = localCursor.getString(2); int resInt = Integer.parseInt(result); Log.d(TAG, "row " + row); // if 'result' column form the TABLE is 0, do something useful: if(resInt == 0) { ProgressBar progress = (ProgressBar) row.findViewById(R.id.update_progress); progress.setIndeterminate(true); TextView edit1 = (TextView)row.findViewById(R.id.row_id); TextView edit2 = (TextView)row.findViewById(R.id.request); TextView edit3 = (TextView)row.findViewById(R.id.result); edit1.setText("1"); edit2.setText("2"); edit3.setText("3"); row = inflater.inflate(R.layout.row, null); } return row; } here is the Stack Trace: 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): java.lang.NullPointerException 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.SimpleCursorAdapter.bindView(SimpleCursorAdapter.java:149) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.CursorAdapter.getView(CursorAdapter.java:186) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at com.dhristov.test1.test1$mySimpleCursorAdapter.getView(test1.java:105) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.AbsListView.obtainView(AbsListView.java:1256) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.ListView.makeAndAddView(ListView.java:1668) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.ListView.fillDown(ListView.java:637) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.ListView.fillSpecific(ListView.java:1224) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.ListView.layoutChildren(ListView.java:1499) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.AbsListView.onLayout(AbsListView.java:1113) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6830) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.LinearLayout.setChildFrame(LinearLayout.java:1119) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.LinearLayout.layoutVertical(LinearLayout.java:998) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.LinearLayout.onLayout(LinearLayout.java:918) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6830) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.LinearLayout.setChildFrame(LinearLayout.java:1119) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.LinearLayout.layoutVertical(LinearLayout.java:998) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.LinearLayout.onLayout(LinearLayout.java:918) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6830) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.FrameLayout.onLayout(FrameLayout.java:333) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6830) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.LinearLayout.setChildFrame(LinearLayout.java:1119) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.LinearLayout.layoutVertical(LinearLayout.java:998) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.LinearLayout.onLayout(LinearLayout.java:918) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6830) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.widget.FrameLayout.onLayout(FrameLayout.java:333) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.view.View.layout(View.java:6830) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.view.ViewRoot.performTraversals(ViewRoot.java:996) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1633) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4363) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) 03-08 03:15:29.639: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(619): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method)

  • org-sort multi: date/time (?d ?t) | priority (?p) | title (?a)

    - by lawlist
Is anyone aware of an org-sort function / modification that can refile / organize a group of TODO so that it sorts them by three (3) criteria: first sort by due date, second sort by priority, and third sort by by title of the task? EDIT: I believe that org-sort by deadline (?d) has a bug that cannot properly handle undated tasks. I am working on a workaround (i.e., moving the undated todo to a different heading before the deadline (?d) sort occurs), but perhaps the best thing to do would be to try and fix the original sorting function. Development of the workaround can be found in this thread (i.e., moving the undated tasks to a different heading in one fell swoop): How to automate org-refile for multiple todo EDIT: Apparently, the following code (ancient history) that I found on the internet was eventually modified and included as a part of org-sort-entries. Unfortunately, undated todo are not properly sorted when sorting by deadline -- i.e., they are mixed in with the dated todo. ;; multiple sort (defun org-sort-multi (&rest sort-types) "Multiple sorts on a certain level of an outline tree, or plain list items. SORT-TYPES is a list where each entry is either a character or a cons pair (BOOL . CHAR), where BOOL is whether or not to sort case-sensitively, and CHAR is one of the characters defined in `org-sort-entries-or-items'. Entries are applied in back to front order. Example: To sort first by TODO status, then by priority, then by date, then alphabetically (case-sensitive) use the following call: (org-sort-multi '(?d ?p ?t (t . ?a)))" (interactive) (dolist (x (nreverse sort-types)) (when (char-valid-p x) (setq x (cons nil x))) (condition-case nil (org-sort-entries (car x) (cdr x)) (error nil)))) ;; sort current level (defun lawlist-sort (&rest sort-types) "Sort the current org level. SORT-TYPES is a list where each entry is either a character or a cons pair (BOOL . CHAR), where BOOL is whether or not to sort case-sensitively, and CHAR is one of the characters defined in `org-sort-entries-or-items'. Entries are applied in back to front order. Defaults to \"?o ?p\" which is sorted by TODO status, then by priority" (interactive) (when (equal mode-name "Org") (let ((sort-types (or sort-types (if (or (org-entry-get nil "TODO") (org-entry-get nil "PRIORITY")) '(?d ?t ?p) ;; date, time, priority '((nil . ?a)))))) (save-excursion (outline-up-heading 1) (let ((start (point)) end) (while (and (not (bobp)) (not (eobp)) (<= (point) start)) (condition-case nil (outline-forward-same-level 1) (error (outline-up-heading 1)))) (unless (> (point) start) (goto-char (point-max))) (setq end (point)) (goto-char start) (apply 'org-sort-multi sort-types) (goto-char end) (when (eobp) (forward-line -1)) (when (looking-at "^\\s-*$") ;; (delete-line) ) (goto-char start) ;; (dotimes (x ) (org-cycle)) ))))) EDIT: Here is a more modern version of multi-sort, which is likely based upon further development of the above-code: (defun org-sort-all () (interactive) (save-excursion (goto-char (point-min)) (while (re-search-forward "^\* " nil t) (goto-char (match-beginning 0)) (condition-case err (progn (org-sort-entries t ?a) (org-sort-entries t ?p) (org-sort-entries t ?o) (forward-line)) (error nil))) (goto-char (point-min)) (while (re-search-forward "\* PROJECT " nil t) (goto-char (line-beginning-position)) (ignore-errors (org-sort-entries t ?a) (org-sort-entries t ?p) (org-sort-entries t ?o)) (forward-line)))) EDIT: The best option will be to fix sorting of deadlines (?d) so that undated todo are moved to the bottom of the outline, instead of mixed in with the dated todo. Here is an excerpt from the current org.el included within Emacs Trunk (as of July 1, 2013): (defun org-sort (with-case) "Call `org-sort-entries', `org-table-sort-lines' or `org-sort-list'. The command prompts for the sorting type unless it has been given to the function through the SORTING-TYPE argument, which needs to be a character, \(?n ?N ?a ?A ?t ?T ?s ?S ?d ?D ?p ?P ?o ?O ?r ?R ?f ?F). Here is the precise meaning of each character: n Numerically, by converting the beginning of the entry/item to a number. a Alphabetically, ignoring the TODO keyword and the priority, if any. o By order of TODO keywords. t By date/time, either the first active time stamp in the entry, or, if none exist, by the first inactive one. s By the scheduled date/time. d By deadline date/time. c By creation time, which is assumed to be the first inactive time stamp at the beginning of a line. p By priority according to the cookie. r By the value of a property. Capital letters will reverse the sort order. If the SORTING-TYPE is ?f or ?F, then GETKEY-FUNC specifies a function to be called with point at the beginning of the record. • How I can add JScroll bar to NavigableImagePanel which is an Image panel with an small navigation vi

    - by Sarah Kho
Hi, I have the following NavigableImagePanel, it is under BSD license and I found it in the web. What I want to do with this panel is as follow: I want to add a JScrollPane to it in order to show images in their full size and let the users to re-center the image using the small navigation panel. Right now, the panel resize the images to fit them in the current panel size. I want it to load the image in its real size and let users to navigate to different parts of the image using the navigation panel. • Calling Grep inside Java gives incorrect results when calling grep in shell gives correct results.

    - by futureelite7
I've got a problem where calling grep from inside java gives incorrect results, as compared to the results from calling grep on the same file in the shell. My grep command (called both in Java and in bash. I escaped the slash in Java accordingly): /bin/grep -vP --regexp='^[0-9]+\t.*' /usr/local/apache-tomcat-6.0.18/work/Catalina/localhost/saccitic/237482319867147879_1271411421 The command is supposed to match and discard strings like these: 85295371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... My input file is this: 85aaa234567 Hi Ms Chan, please be informed that... 85292vx5678 Hi Mrs Ng, please be informed that... 85295371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85aaa234567 Hi Ms Chan, please be informed that... 85292vx5678 Hi Mrs Ng, please be informed that... 85295371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85295371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85295371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85295371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85295371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 8~!95371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85295371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 852&^*&1616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 8529537Ax16 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85====ppq16 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85291234783 a3283784428349247233834728482984723333 85219299222 The commands works when I call it from inside bash (Results below): 85aaa234567 Hi Ms Chan, please be informed that... 85292vx5678 Hi Mrs Ng, please be informed that... 85aaa234567 Hi Ms Chan, please be informed that... 85292vx5678 Hi Mrs Ng, please be informed that... 8~!95371616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 852&^*&1616 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 8529537Ax16 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85====ppq16 Hi Mr Lee, please be informed that... 85219299222 However, when I call grep again inside java, I get the entire file (Results below): 85aaa234567 Hi Ms Chan, please be informed that... 85291234783 a3283784428349247233834728482984723333 85219299222 What could be the problem that will cause the grep called by Java to return incorrect results? • How to change the Struts2 validation error message in the case of an invalid field value?

    - by FarmBoy
I'm using Struts2 validation on a web form. In the case that a field is suppose to be an integer or Date, the <s:fielderror> message I receive is a generic Invalid field value for field "[fieldname]" Naturally, I want to customize this for the user. Here's an example validation: <field name="spouseDOB"> <field-validator type="date"> <message>"Spouse Date of Birth" is invalid.</message> </field-validator> <field-validator type="date"> <param name="min">01/01/1900</param> <message>"Spouse Date of Birth" must be after 1900 AD. </field-validator> </field> The message "Spouse Date of Birth" is invalid. never appears, for any invalid date that I have tried. The output is the generic Invalid field value for field spouseDOB spouseDOB is a java.util.Date object in the action class. It is set by a <s:textfield> in the JSP.

  • A methology that allows for a single Java code base covering many different versions?

    - by Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
I work in a small shop where we have a LOT of legacy Cobol code and where a methology has been adopted to allow us to minimize forking and branching as much as possible. For a given release we have three levels: CORE - bottom layer, this code is common to all releases GROUP - optional code common to several customers. CUSTOMER - optional code specific for a single customer. When a program is needed, it is first searched for in CUSTOMER, then in GROUP and finally in CORE. A given application for us invokes many programs which all are looked for in this sequence (think exe files and PATH under Windows). We also have Java programs interacting with this legacy code, and as the core-group-customer lookup mehchanism does not lend it self easily to Java it has tended to grow in a CVS branch for each customer, requiring much too much maintainance. The Java part and the backend part tend to be developed in parallel. I have been assigned to figure out a way to make the two worlds meet. Essentially we want a Java enviornment which allows us to have a single code base with sources for each release, where we easily can select a group and a customer and work with the application as it goes for that customer, and then easily switch to another codeset and THAT customer. I was thinking of perhaps a scenario with an Eclipse project for each core, customer, and group and then use Project Sets to select those we need for a given scenario. The problem I cannot get my head about, is how we would create robust code in the CORE projects which will work regardless of which group and customer is selected. A Factory class which knows which sub class of a passed Class object to invoke instead of each and every new? Others must have had similar code base management problems. Anybody with experiences to share? EDIT: The conclusion to this problem above has been that CVS needs to be replaced with a source code management system better suited for dealing with many branches concurrently and the migration of source from one component to the other while keeping history. Inspired by the recent migration by slf4j and logback we are currently looking at git as it handles branches very well. We've considered subversion and mercurial too but git appears to be better for single location, multibranched projects. I've asked about Perforce in another question, but my personal inclination is towards open source solutions for something as crucial as this. EDIT: After some more pondering, we've found that our actual pain point is that we use branches in CVS, and that branches in CVS are the easiest to work with if you branch ALL files! The revised conclusion is that we can do this with CVS alone, by switching to a forest of java projects, each corresponding to one of the levels above, and use the Eclipse build paths to tie them together so each CUSTOMER version pulls in the appropriate GROUP and CORE project. We still want to switch to a better versioning system but this is so important a decision so we want to delay it as much as possible. EDIT: I now have a proof-of-concept implementation of the CORE-GROUP-CUSTOMER concept using Google Guice 2.0 - the @ImplementedBy tag is just what we need. I wonder what everybody else does? Using if's all over the place? EDIT: Now I also need this functionality for web applications. Guice was until the JSR-330 is in place. Anybody with versioning experience? EDIT: JSR-330/299 is now in place with the JEE6 reference implementation Weld based on JBoss Seam and I have reimplemented the proof-of-concept with Weld and can see that if we use @Alternative along with ... in beans.xml we can get the behaviour we desire. I.e. provide a new implementation for a given functionality in CORE without changing a bit in the CORE jars. Initial reading up on the Servlet 3.0 specification indicates that it may support the same functionality for web application resources (not code). We will now do initial testing on the real application.

  • Java: Is clone() really ever used? What about defensive copying in getters/setters?

    - by GreenieMeanie
Do people practically ever use defensive getters/setters? To me, 99% of the time you intend for the object you set in another object to be a copy of the same object reference, and you intend for changes you make to it to also be made in the object it was set in. If you setDate(Date dt) and modify dt later, who cares? Unless I want some basic immutable data bean that just has primitives and maybe something simple like a Date, I never use it. As far as clone, there are issues as to how deep or shallow the copy is, so it seems kind of "dangerous" to know what is going to come out when you clone an Object. I think I have only used clone() once or twice, and that was to copy the current state of the object because another thread (ie another HTTP request accessing the same object in Session) could be modifying it. Edit - A comment I made below is more the question: But then again, you DID change the Date, so it's kind of your own fault, hence whole discussion of term "defensive". If it is all application code under your own control among a small to medium group of developers, will just documenting your classes suffice as an alternative to making object copies? Or is this not necessary, since you should always assume something ISN'T copied when calling a setter/getter?

  • Java.lang.NullPointerException when using retreived Image (Unless method is used statically!)

    - by Emdiesse
Hi there, This has been doing my head in all day and I have finally decided to resort to asking for help! In my MIDLet I have an instance of the java class ImageFetcher called anImg. Also within my MIDLet I have a command that simply say's fetch, a CommandListener that when detects fetch was clicked runs the function below. This function should simply run public getImage() from the anImg instance of class ImageFetcher which returns an image and then appends/sets this Image onto the form on the display. (You may recognise the getImage() function from the Nokia JavaME Wiki!!!) Instead of any image being displayed this is written to the output terminal in netbeans: Msg: Java.lang.NullPointerException HOWEVER, If I change public getImage() to public static getImage() and replace anImg.getImage() with ImageFetcher.getImage() the image is successfully displayed!!! Thank you for your replies on this issue :) I look forward to going my hair back after this ordeal! FetchImageApp.java ... ... ... private doThis(){ try { Image im; if ((im = anImg.getImage()) != null) { ImageItem ii = new ImageItem(null, im, ImageItem.LAYOUT_DEFAULT, null); // If there is already an image, set (replace) it if (form.size() != 0) { form.set(0, ii); } else // Append the image to the empty form { form.append(ii); } } else { form.append("Unsuccessful download."); } // Display the form with the image display.setCurrent(form); } catch (Exception e) { System.err.println("Msg: " + e.toString()); } } ... ... ... • GoldenGate 12c Trail Encryption and Credentials with Oracle Wallet

    - by hamsun
I have been asked more than once whether the Oracle Wallet supports GoldenGate trail encryption. Although GoldenGate has supported encryption with the ENCKEYS file for years, Oracle GoldenGate 12c now also supports encryption using the Oracle Wallet. This helps improve security and makes it easier to administer. Two types of wallets can be configured in Oracle GoldenGate 12c: The wallet that holds the master keys, used with trail or TCP/IP encryption and decryption, stored in the new 12c dirwlt/cwallet.sso file.   The wallet that holds the Oracle Database user IDs and passwords stored in the ‘credential store’ stored in the new 12c dircrd/cwallet.sso file.   A wallet can be created using a ‘create wallet’  command.  Adding a master key to an existing wallet is easy using ‘open wallet’ and ‘add masterkey’ commands.   GGSCI (EDLVC3R27P0) 42> open wallet Opened wallet at location 'dirwlt'. • Cannot Install JDK

    - by Vince
For the life of me, I can't install the JDK on Windows Vista. I keep getting the error, "This Software Has Already Been Installed on Your Computer. Would you like to reinstall it?" Problem is, it's evidently not on my computer, since I can't a) run Eclipse - I get "Could Not Find Java SE Runtime Environment" or b) Find any reference to Java from the command line when typing java -version - I get "Error opening registry key 'Registry/JavaSoft/Java Runtime Environment." Any ideas?

  • NullPointerException when installing the Android SDK on Mac OS X

    - by Feanor
I'm installing the Android SDK on Mac OS X. Following the instructions on the Android Development site, I've downloaded the SDK and modified my .bash_profile to include the path. The next step is to use the Android SDK and AVD Manager to actually download the platforms. However, when I use the Manager to install the platforms, I get the following error in the Terminal. I've looked around for similar problems in the Eclipse and Android forums and haven't found anything yet. Is something else damaged in the environment and needs to be repaired?
