• Extracting [] elements from form collection - mvc - should use icollection but have mix of types

  hi there. have looked at Phil Haacks project on books at http://haacked.com/archive/2008/10/23/model-binding-to-a-list.aspx which has been useful, but I have a mix of data types. I use a modelview so that i can have a mix of objects, in this case: Order (ie order.id, order.date etc), Customer, SoilSamplingOrder and a list of SoilSamplingSubJobs which is like this [0].id, [0].field, [1].id, [1].field etc Perhaps I should be using ICollection instead of List? I had problems getting UpdateModel to work so I used an extract from collection method. the first 4 method calls : orderRepository.FindOrder(id); etc give the model the original to be edited. but after this point i'm a little lost in how to update the subjobs. I hope i have delineated enough to make sense of the problem. • Cucumber could not find table; but its there. What is going on?

  I'm working with cucumber and I'm running into difficulties. When I run "cucumber features", I am met with errors, cucumber is unable to find my requests table. What obvious mistake am I making?   i have something similar to the following... used a python script to JSON to populate. <ul> <li id="p1" class="x">val1 <img id="ip1" class="redx" src="redx.gif"/></li> <li id="p2" class="x">val2 <img id="ip2" class="redx" src="redx.gif"/></li> <li id="p3" class="x">val3 <img id="ip3" class="redx" src="redx.gif"/></li> <li id="p4" class="x">val4 <img id="ip4" class="redx" src="redx.gif"/></li> </ul> I'd like some jquery to... when click the red x image.. to hide the whole LI cell it is in. I have tried a few things but ... to no avail. • How to use XPath to filter elements by TextContent? get parent by axis?

  Hi all: I've found a similar question on SO, however, that seems not exactly what I wanna achieve: Say, this is a sample XML file: <root> <item> <id isInStock="true">10001</id> <category>Loose Balloon</category> </item> <item> <id isInStock="true">10001</id> <category>Bouquet Balloon</category> </item> <item> <id isInStock="true">10001</id> <category>Loose Balloon</category> </item> </root> If I wanna get a "filtered" subset of the item elements from this XML, how could I use an XPath expression to directly address that? XPathExpression expr = xpath.compile("/root/item/category/text()"); I now know this would evaluate to be the collection of all the TextContent from the categories, however, that means I have to use a collection to store the values, then iterate, then go back to grab other related info such as the item id again. Another question is : how could I refer to the parent node properly? Say, this xpath expression would get me the collection of all the id nodes, right? But what I want is the collection of item nodes: XPathExpression expr = xpath.compile("/root/item/id[@isInStock='true']"); I know I should use the "parent" axis to refer to that, but I just cannot make it right... Is there a better way of doing this sort of thing? Learning the w3cschools tutorials now... Sorry I am new to XPath in Java, and thanks a lot in advance.

• Reordering arguments using recursion (pro, cons, alternatives)

  I find that I often make a recursive call just to reorder arguments. For example, here's my solution for endOther from codingbat.com: Given two strings, return true if either of the strings appears at the very end of the other string, ignoring upper/lower case differences (in other words, the computation should not be "case sensitive"). Note: str.toLowerCase() returns the lowercase version of a string. public boolean endOther(String a, String b) { return a.length() < b.length() ? endOther(b, a) : a.toLowerCase().endsWith(b.toLowerCase()); } I'm very comfortable with recursions, but I can certainly understand why some perhaps would object to it. There are two obvious alternatives to this recursion technique: Swap a and b traditionally public boolean endOther(String a, String b) { if (a.length() < b.length()) { String t = a; a = b; b = t; } return a.toLowerCase().endsWith(b.toLowerCase()); } Not convenient in a language like Java that doesn't pass by reference Lots of code just to do a simple operation An extra if statement breaks the "flow" Repeat code public boolean endOther(String a, String b) { return (a.length() < b.length()) ? b.toLowerCase().endsWith(a.toLowerCase()) : a.toLowerCase().endsWith(b.toLowerCase()); } Explicit symmetry may be a nice thing (or not?) Bad idea unless the repeated code is very simple ...though in this case you can get rid of the ternary and just || the two expressions So my questions are: Is there a name for these 3 techniques? (Are there more?) Is there a name for what they achieve? (e.g. "parameter normalization", perhaps?) Are there official recommendations on which technique to use (when)? What are other pros/cons that I may have missed?

I know that final instance members are synchronized between threads, but is this also true for the objects held by these members? • Reading Data from DDFS ValueError: No JSON object could be decoded

  I'm running dozens of map reduce jobs for a number of different purposes using disco. My data has grown enormous and I thought I would try using DDFS for a change rather than standard txt files. I've followed the DISCO map/reduce example Counting Words as a map/reduce job, without to much difficulty and with the help of others, Reading JSON specific data into DISCO I've gotten past one of my latest problems. I'm trying to read data in/out of ddfs to better chunk and distribute it but am having a bit of trouble. • SQL Server Search Proper Names Full Text Index vs LIKE + SOUNDEX

  I have a database of names of people that has (currently) 35 million rows. I need to know what is the best method for quickly searching these names. The current system (not designed by me), simply has the first and last name columns indexed and uses "LIKE" queries with the additional option of using SOUNDEX (though I'm not sure this is actually used much). Performance has always been a problem with this system, and so currently the searches are limited to 200 results (which still takes too long to run). So, I have a few questions: Does full text index work well for proper names? If so, what is the best way to query proper names? (CONTAINS, FREETEXT, etc) Is there some other system (like Lucene.net) that would be better? Just for reference, I'm using Fluent NHibernate for data access, so methods that work will with that will be preferred. I'm using SQL Server 2008 currently. EDIT I want to add that I'm very interested in solutions that will deal with things like commonly misspelled names, eg 'smythe', 'smith', as well as first names, eg 'tomas', 'thomas'.   I have a many-to-many relationship with a link box, and I want to pull those models together into one form so I can update from the same page. I'm really struggling with getting the check_box to even show all the elements of my array - I've scoured the net and been working on this literally all day, and I'm finding it difficult to apply the information I'm reading to my problem. I'm also extremely new to RoR and I've been following a bit of an outdated video tutorial (pre 2.0) so apologies for my code. So far, I've got it to output only one key pair in the array (the last one) - although outside the form, the code used in the tutorial works exactly how it should. Thats of little use though! Host is the model for which the main form is for, and Billing is the outside model that I'm trying to add to the form.   I've literally just started using the Unity Application Blocks Dependency Injection library from Microsoft, and I've come unstuck. This is my IoC class that'll handle the instantiation of my concrete classes to their interface types (so I don't have to keep called Resolve on the IoC container each time I want a repository in my controller): public class IoC { public static void Intialise(UnityConfigurationSection section, string connectionString) { _connectionString = connectionString; _container = new UnityContainer(); section.Configure(_container); } private static IUnityContainer _container; private static string _connectionString; public static IMovementRepository MovementRepository { get { return _container.Resolve<IMovementRepository>(); } } } So, the idea is that from my Controller, I can just do the following: _repository = IoC.MovementRepository; I am currently getting the error: Exception is: InvalidOperationException - The type String cannot be constructed. You must configure the container to supply this value. Now, I'm assuming this is because my mapped concrete implementation requires a single string parameter for its constructor. The concrete class is as follows: public sealed class MovementRepository : Repository, IMovementRepository { public MovementRepository(string connectionString) : base(connectionString) { } } Which inherits from: public abstract class Repository { public Repository(string connectionString) { _connectionString = connectionString; } public virtual string ConnectionString { get { return _connectionString; } } private readonly string _connectionString; } Now, am I doing this the correct way? Should I not have a constructor in my concrete implementation of a loosely coupled type? This event is only fired after a correlation ID is returned to the original caller. About 1% of the time, we've encountered VB6 executing the raised event before finishing the function that originally sent the data.   Currently I have a sql call returning a dataset from a MSSQL database and I want to take a column from that data and return ID's based off that column from the ORACLE database. I can do this one at a time but that requires multiple calls, I am wondering if this can be done with one call. String sql=String.Format(@"Select DIST_NO FROM DISTRICT WHERE DIST_DESC = '{0}'", row.Table.Rows[0]["Op_Centre"].ToString()); Above is the string I am using to return one ID at a time. I know the {0} can be used to format your value into the string and maybe there is a way to do that with a datatable. Also to use multiple values in the where clause it would be: String sql=String.Format(@"Select DIST_NO FROM DISTRICT WHERE DIST_DESC in ('{0}')", row.Table.Rows[0] ["Op_Centre"].ToString()); Although I realize all of this can be done I am wondering if theres an easy way to add it all to the sql string in one call. As I am writing this I am realizing I could break the string into sections then just add every row value to the SQL string within the "WHERE DIST_DESC IN (" clause... I want it to work for all entries in the m3allem table, so I try this: SELECT nom ,prenom ,(SELECT GROUP_CONCAT(category_en) FROM (SELECT DISTINCT category_en FROM categories c WHERE id IN (SELECT DISTINCT category_id FROM m3allems_to_categories m2c WHERE m3allem_id = m.id) ) cS ) categories ,(SELECT GROUP_CONCAT(area_en) FROM (SELECT DISTINCT area_en FROM areas c WHERE id IN (SELECT DISTINCT area_id FROM m3allems_to_areas m2a WHERE m3allem_id = m.id) ) aSq ) areas FROM m3allems m And I get an error: Unknown column 'm.id' in 'where clause' Why? From the MySql manual: 13.2.8.7. Correlated Subqueries [...] Scoping rule: MySQL evaluates from inside to outside. So... do this not work when the subquery is in a SELECT section? I did not read anything about that. Does anyone know? What should I do? It took me a long time to build this query... I know it's a monster query but it gets what I want in a single query, and I am so close to getting it to work! Can anyone help?

How to get the attachment number in ID attribute for every LI inside the gallery UL only when an ID attr is there and pass them via ajax data in this way: { attached : '32,34,38,64,75' } if there is a better way of doing this let me know I want to pass the list items which contain attachments to process. How to get the list item LI which has class of featured e.g. { featured_img : .. } and pass the attachment ID number if featured LI exists, and if none of list items is featured pass featured_img with 0.   Consider the following code where I am returning double& and a string&. The thing works fine in the case of a double but not in the case of a string. Why is this difference in the behavior? • Loop XML including all its children using xpath and SimpleXMLElement

  Im having a big xml tree with a simple structure. All I want to do is get a node by its attribute using xpath and loop the children. param1 - correct language param1 & param3 - correct node by its id and the parents id. (Need to use parent id when multiplie id appears. The id is not declared as id in DTD) public function getSubmenuNodesRe($language, $id1,$id2) { $result = $this->xml->xpath("//*[@language='$language']//*[@id='$id1']//menuitem[@id='$id2']/*"); return $result; } This works well, I get the node Im expecting. I having no problems looping the array returned by the xpath query. But when i try to loop childnodes all attributes are gone and many of the methods also. Except getName(). function printNodeName($node) { echo $node->getName(). " - \"" . $node['id']. "\"<br>"; if($node->children()->getName() == "menuitem") { $s = $node->children(); printNodeName($s); } } $result = $xmlNode->getSubmenuNodesRe($_GET['language'], 'foo','bar'); if ($result) { while(list( , $node) = each($result)) { if ($node->getName() == "menuitem") { printNodeName($node); } } } Why is that? only the name will be printed for the $s.
