• Unable to launch Eclipse 4.1.2 after installing the Eclipse e4 tooling

  After installing Eclipse e4 Tools in my Eclipse 4.1.2 from update site. I am getting error when launching the eclipse.exe "An error has occurred. • How to use Application Verifier to find memory leaks

  I want to find memory leaks in my application using standard utilities. Previously I used my own memory allocator, but other people (yes, you Neil) suggested to use Microsoft's Application Verifier, but I can't seem to get it to report my leaks. I have the following simple application: #include <iostream> #include <conio.h> class X { public: X::X() : m_value(123) {} private: int m_value; }; void main() { X *p1 = 0; X *p2 = 0; X *p3 = 0; p1 = new X(); p2 = new X(); p3 = new X(); delete p1; delete p3; } This test clearly contains a memory leak: p2 is new'd but not deleted. I build the executable using the following command lines: cl /c /EHsc /Zi /Od /MDd test.cpp link /debug test.obj I downloaded Application Verifier (4.0.0665) and enabled all checks. If I now run my test application I can see a log of it in Application Verifier, but I don't see the memory leak. Questions: Why doesn't Application Verifier report a leak? Or isn't Application Verifier really intended to find leaks? If it isn't which other tools are available to clearly report leaks at the end of the application (i.e. not by taking regular snapshots and comparing them since this is not possible in an application taking 1GB or more), including the call stack of the place of allocation (so not the simple leak reporting at the end of the CRT) If I don't find a decent utility, I still have to rely on my own memory manager (which does it perfectly).

  I have a Winforms app that consumes a C# Webservice. If the WebService throws an Exception my Client app always get's a SoapException instead of the "real" Exception. • Linq to SQL and concurrency with Rob Conery repository pattern

  I have implemented a DAL using Rob Conery's spin on the repository pattern (from the MVC Storefront project) where I map database objects to domain objects using Linq and use Linq to SQL to actually get the data. This is all working wonderfully giving me the full control over the shape of my domain objects that I want, but I have hit a problem with concurrency that I thought I'd ask about here. I have concurrency working but the solution feels like it might be wrong (just one of those gitchy feelings). The basic pattern is: private MyDataContext _datacontext private Table _tasks; public Repository(MyDataContext datacontext) { _dataContext = datacontext; } public void GetTasks() { _tasks = from t in _dataContext.Tasks; return from t in _tasks select new Domain.Task { Name = t.Name, Id = t.TaskId, Description = t.Description }; } public void SaveTask(Domain.Task task) { Task dbTask = null; // Logic for new tasks omitted... dbTask = (from t in _tasks where t.TaskId == task.Id select t).SingleOrDefault(); dbTask.Description = task.Description, dbTask.Name = task.Name, _dataContext.SubmitChanges(); } So with that implementation I've lost concurrency tracking because of the mapping to the domain task. I get it back by storing the private Table which is my datacontext list of tasks at the time of getting the original task. I then update the tasks from this stored Table and save what I've updated This is working - I get change conflict exceptions raised when there are concurrency violations, just as I want. However, it just screams to me that I've missed a trick. Is there a better way of doing this? I've looked at the .Attach method on the datacontext but that appears to require storing the original version in a similar way to what I'm already doing. I also know that I could avoid all this by doing away with the domain objects and letting the Linq to SQL generated objects all the way up my stack - but I dislike that just as much as I dislike the way I'm handling concurrency.

• I/O error(socket error): [Errno 111] Connection refused

  I have a program that uses urllib to periodically fetch a url, and I see intermittent errors like : I/O error(socket error): [Errno 111] Connection refused. It works 90% of the time, but the othe r10% it fails. If retry the fetch immediately after it fails, it succeeds. I'm unable to figure out why this is so. I tried to see if any ports are available, and they are. Any debugging ideas?   I'm getting the following error in my MVC2 app using Linq to SQL (I am new to both). I am connected to an actual SQL server not weird mdf: System.InvalidOperationException The null value cannot be assigned to a member with type System.Int64 which is a non-nullable value type My SQL table has a column called MessageID. It is BigInt type and has a primary key, NOT NULL and an IDENTITY 1 1, no Default In my dbml designer it has the following declaration for this field: [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ColumnAttribute(Storage="_MessageId", AutoSync=AutoSync.OnInsert, DbType="BigInt NOT NULL IDENTITY", IsPrimaryKey=true, IsDbGenerated=true)] public long MessageId { get { return this._MessageId; } set { if ((this._MessageId != value)) { this.OnMessageIdChanging(value); this.SendPropertyChanging(); this._MessageId = value; this.SendPropertyChanged("MessageId"); this.OnMessageIdChanged(); } } } It keeps telling me that null cannot be assigned - I'm not passing through null! It's a long - it can't even be null! Am I doing something stupid? I can't find a solution anywhere! I made this work by changing the type of this property to Nullable<long> but surely this can't be right? Update: I am using InsertOnSubmit. • WPF touch and slide/drag animation

  I'm trying to create a pretty simple WPF interface, and from what I know this should be mostly possible using pure XAML. What I know I have a pretty basic understanding of WPF so far, however I have a decent grasp on XAML. I know or can work out how to put content in these panels. This isn't the topic of this question. What I don't know I don't know how to animate this interface. I'm not very proficient at binding, however again, that's not the topic of this question. The topic of this question is what would be the best way to animate panels 1-4 (images below) so that they may be dragged (via touch) into view. The number of panels here may be static for the purpose of this question. The panels (1-4) can be stack panels, grids or whatever; their content isnt important. What is important is the container that would contain all 4 panels. The complication in this animation is the other two containers here (Item One/TODO), as they're in the way of a smooth animation. If it makes this question simpler, the touch features can be ignored for now, and a simple button push can slide the containers across. One Two

• What's the best way to refresh a UITableView within a UINavigationController hierarchy

  Hi, I'm pretty new to iPhone development and have struggled to find what I consider to be a neat way around this problem. I have a user interface where a summary of record data is displayed in a table inside a navigation controller. When the user clicks the accessory button for a row, a new view is pushed onto the navigation controller revealing a view where the user can edit the data in the corresponding record. Once done, the editing view is popped from the navigation controller's stack and the user is returned to the table view. My problem is that when the user returns to the table view, the table still shows the state of the data before the record was edited. I must therefore reload the table data to show the changes. It doesn't seem possible to reload the table data before it is displayed as the call only updates displayed records. Reloading it after the table has been displayed results in the old data changing before the user's eyes, which I'm not too happy with. This seems to me like a pretty normal thing to want to do in an iPhone app. Can anyone please suggest the best practice approach to doing this? I feel like I'm missing something. Cheers - Steve.

  I am trying to create a WiX custom action which will allow me to shutdown and clear down a COM+ package as part of an upgrade installation, or create and configure a new COM+ package as part of the initial installation. I previously had this running as a CustomAction within a standard Visual Studio MSI but this only allows the custom action to be executed after the files have been copied - which will fail as the package will still be running. The COMAdmin.dll has been added as a reference to the CustomAction project and is set CopyLocal=true. In the bin folder for the custom action project the Interop.COMAdmin.dll is present. The answer to this question seems to suggest that it should work.   I have an Entity Framework data model. Part of the model is a Customer entity. The web service provides a method to get a customer, and to receive an updated version of this customer to be persisted. To test this, I created a new ASP.NET web Application, (Solution Add New Project ASP.NET Web Application), then added a reference to my service reference using the standard Add Service Reference dialog. I then call the service using the following code: var client = new CustomerServiceClient(); var customer = client.GetCustomerByID(18); // get it customer.LimitDown = 100; // change it client.SaveCustomer(customer); // persist it Everything works as expected. Now, I do exactly the same thing, but this time with as ASP.NET Web Site (Solution Add New Web Site ASP.NET Web Site). • Problem loading Oracle client libraries when running in a NAnt build

  I am trying to use dbdeploy to manage Oracle schema changes. I can run it successfully from the command line to get it to generate my change scripts, but when I try to execute it via the dbdeploy NAnt task running through TeamCity, I get an error: System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater. I do have the Oracle 10.2.0.2 client software installed. It's the first entry in the system path, and the dbdeploy.exe app is able to successfully negotiate an Oracle connection. The dbdeploy code dynamically loads the System.Data.OracleClient assembly, which in-turn tries to use the Oracle client bits to talk to the database. This is what is failing in my NAnt environment. • Can't install ruby-debug-ide on Windows 7

  I'm running netbeans 6.8 on windows 7 pro (x64) with the bitnami stack and I'm using ruby 1.8.7-p72. Note: I can't change the version of ruby I am using because I am working with a team, this is a college project and we have only 3 weeks left before we have to hand it in. Changing the version of ruby at this time would be too much work I think. I can't debug my code with the IDE. It says I must have the fast-debugger installed but I cannot install it. When I try through the gui I get the following message: Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing ruby-debug-ide: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. "C:/Program Files/BitNami RubyStack/ruby/bin/ruby.exe" mkrf_conf.rb Building native extensions. This could take a while... Gem files will remain installed in C:/Program Files/BitNami RubyStack/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ruby-debug-ide-0.4.8 for inspection. Results logged to C:/Program Files/BitNami RubyStack/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ruby-debug-ide-0.4.8/ext/gem_make.out I have tracked the problem down to a gcc not being installed... I have installed cygwin but I'm not sure what I am doing and it's still not working... Anyone know how to fix this problem? (BTW- I have already done a lot of googling on this)

  Alright, I'm trying to query a sqlite database. I was trying to be good and use the query method of SQLiteDatabase and pass in the values in the selectArgs parameter to ensure everything got properly escaped, but it wouldn't work. I never got any rows returned (no errors, either). I started getting curious about the SQL that this generated so I did some more poking around and found SQLiteQueryBuilder (and apparently Stack Overflow doesn't handle links with parentheses in them well, so I can't link to the anchor for the buildQuery method), which I assume uses the same logic to generate the SQL statement. I did this: SQLiteQueryBuilder builder = new SQLiteQueryBuilder(); builder.setTables(BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TABLE_NAME); String sql = builder.buildQuery(new String[] { BarcodeDb.Barcodes.ID, BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TIMESTAMP, BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TYPE, BarcodeDb.Barcodes.VALUE }, "? = '?' • jQuery.ajax call to Twitter succeeds but returns null for Firefox

  I've got code that makes a simple get request to Twitter (search) using jQuery's ajax method. The code works fine on Safari, but fails on Firefox (3.6.3). In the Firefox case, my jQuery.ajax parameters 'success' method is invoked, but the supplied data is null. (In Safari, I receive a boatload of JSON data). I know there are many JS widgets and whatnots that ajax get data from Twitter. Is there something I need to enable to allow this?

• Problem releasing UIImageView after adding to UIScrollView

  I'm having a memory problem related to UIImageView. After adding this view to my UIScrollView, if I try to release the UIImageView the application crashes. According to the stack trace, something is calling [UIImageView stopAnimating] after [UIImageView dealloc] is called. However, if I don't release the view the memory is never freed up, and I've confirmed that there remains an extra retain call on the view after deallocating...which causes my total allocations to climb quickly and eventually crash the app after loading the view multiple times. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here though...I don't know what is trying to access the UIImageView after it has been released. • Why does Silverlight 4 ClientHttp WebRequest prompt the user for a login and password?

  One of the new features of the client http stack in Silverlight 4 is the ability to supply network credentials. When I use this feature Windows shows a "Windows Security" message box that prompts the user for a login and password (text in the box is "The server xx at xx requires a username and password. Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)."). I'm setting the login and password as shown below so I'm not sure why this is displayed. My code is: var request = WebRequestCreator.ClientHttp.Create(new Uri("http://myserver:8080/gui/?list=1")); request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("login", "password"); request.BeginGetResponse(new AsyncCallback(OnRequestComplete), request); If I enter the username and password into the messagebox the request completes successfully. For a number of reasons I'd rather prompt the user for the login and password so I'd like to avoid the messagebox if possible. My setup is Silverlight 4 final, VS 2010 final, Windows 7 x86. The application is out of browser with elevated permissions.
